No one voted for dirty air and water. The Trump administration is accelerating efforts to dismantle our bedrock environmental laws and protections. From clean air and water to public lands and climate action, the consequences of these decisions are showing up across the South, in the places we live, and the lives we lead. Here at SELC, we’re fighting back — in the courtroom, the halls of government, and in our communities. Because environmental protections aren’t political — they’re fundamental.

STOP THE SWAPS A Yosemite-Like Land Exchange Is Proposed for Cumberland Island National Seashore BY WILL HARLAN

THERE IS NO PLACE WILDER, more beautiful, and more beloved than Cumberland Island. This national seashore and wilderness island off the Georgia coast is the largest undeveloped barrier island in the East, and it shelters hundreds of imperiled and endangered species, including sea turtles and shorebirds. The island also attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year. Beachgoers flock to the island’s 18 miles of windswept seashore and towering sand dunes. Backpackers trek beneath forests of ancient live oaks draped with beards of Spanish moss. Kayakers paddle through golden marshes. On Cumberland, you can hike through an old-growth forest, paddle beside manatees and dolphins,

and walk along a wild beach—all in one afternoon. Cumberland Island was established in 1972 when the National Park Service bought lands from wealthy families on the island, including Carnegie, Candler and Rockefeller heirs. Families were paid millions for the land, and they also got a sweetheart deal: They could continue living on the island they had sold for the rest of their lives. For the past 50 years, these wealthy families have been living in the middle of a national park. Now their tenure is nearing its end. Nearly all the other families have sold their land and left the island, but a few holdouts refuse to leave. Instead, they are trying to cut a deal that will allow them to stay on the island forever. At the request of these Gilded

Age families, the Trump administration announced plans last month for land swaps on Cumberland Island, similar to the land swaps proposed in Yosemite National Park just two weeks earlier. The land swaps would trade park land for privately owned land and allow for the development of at least eight 15,000-square-foot mansions up to three stories high. The land swaps would also allow wealthy families to permanently live in the park and drive all over the island. Two land swaps are currently proposed, with other land swaps waiting in the wings. One of them would allow multiple families to continue living in a massive development in the middle of the wilderness. They were already paid millions, and they have lived there for 50 years. Who else gets to sell

their home and property—and then continue living in it for decades? In addition to the eight mansions proposed so far, the land swaps would also carve out a privately owned beach pavilion and private road to the beach for exclusive use by the developers. The land swaps will also cost taxpayers millions. The proposed exchanges will require the National Park Service to use federal funds to pay for the land exchanges—even after taxpayers already paid millions to acquire many of these lands 50 years ago. These mansion owners and all their guests would be allowed to drive anywhere they want all over the island, including along the beach. There would be more vehicle traffic on Cumberland Island—a

national seashore and federally designated wilderness—than all the developed beaches in Georgia combined. Cumberland would have more vehicles driving along its pristine shores than Cocoa Beach or Miami Beach. Beach driving is deadly for sea turtles, and Cumberland is one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in the world. More loggerhead sea turtles nest on Cumberland Island than anywhere else in Georgia, accounting for 30% of all nests. The island also provides essential habitat for shorebirds, including the piping plover and red knot. Right whales—the most endangered whale in the world—give birth just offshore from Cumberland. Endangered manatees graze along the island’s western shore. This is an American national park, not a Monopoly board. A bunch of new mansions don’t belong here. Like Yosemite, Cumberland Island is a national treasure that belongs to every person in this country. These land swaps are an attack on the American people who own this public land. When Congress created Cumberland Island National Seashore, it intended for the island to become wilder over time and “preserved in its primitive state.” The proposed land exchanges move the island in the opposite direction: They allow increased and permanent development and commercialization of the seashore and violate the island’s Congressional mandate. Many other former landowners on Cumberland Island have already sold their land and left the island. When their tenure ended, they honored their contracts with the National Park Service—and the American people. However, a few remaining families are trying to get out of their contracts with the park and the public through these land swaps. These Gilded Age families have been clear: They want to develop the island and profit off it. These holdouts still own a few parcels of land outright, and they are threatening to build even more developments on these tracts if they don’t get what they want. They also refuse to sell these remaining lands to the Park Service. Instead of supporting and expanding the park, the agency is attempting to hold the island

8

hostage until their demands are met to live there forever and build more mansions and drive all over the place. Thousands of comments have flooded the National Park Service opposing the land exchange. But so far, the Park Service has ignored public input and pushed forward with the land swaps. Last year, the public rose up to stop the selloff of public lands proposed by Congress and the administration. The backlash against selling off public lands was overwhelming and widespread, including people of all backgrounds and beliefs. The message we sent was loud and clear: Public lands belong in public hands. However, the administration has not stopped trying to sell off public lands—they’ve just changed tactics. They are trying to privatize public lands piecemeal through land swaps— first in Yosemite, then in Texas, and now on Cumberland Island. The land swaps on Cumberland will require Congressional approval. Contacting Georgia Senators John Ossoff and Ralph Warnock and House Representative Buddy Carter is the best thing you can do right now to stop the swaps. Ultimately, the remaining parcels of private lands on Cumberland Island should be purchased by the Park Service—and it should use eminent domain if the wealthy families are unwilling to sell. We are all co-owners of this national seashore, and we can’t let a few wealthy families develop and destroy it. Cumberland Island is not a private playground for the rich and famous. It is a national treasure that belongs to us all. Now more than ever, it needs your voice. You’re probably tired of being told to contact your legislators, and you understandably think that it doesn’t do any good. But in this particular case, it actually can make a difference. These legislators are ready to act to protect Cumberland. A quick one-sentence email (or better yet, a 20-second phone call) to Senator Ossoff, Senator Warnock, and/or Representative Buddy Carter in the next few weeks will significantly influence the outcome of these land swaps and the future of Cumberland Island.

Then we ask readers to vote for your favorite places to live, visit, and play. The responses are in and winners have been crowned. LARGE TOWN

ROANOKE, VIRGINIA Roanoke is one of the region’s peak adventure destinations. The small city unfolds across a namesake valley surrounded by peaks in the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Appalachian Ridge and Valley range to the west. The former’s famed parkway skirts around town and connects to a drive-up overlook with sweeping, 1,700-foot views of the city from Mill Mountain Park. the city and will soon feature a new whitewater park that’s in development. While a 30-mile network of greenway trails— replete with a cyclocross course and pump track—connects historic neighborhoods, a bustling downtown area, and a municipal park with a craft brewery off the Blue Ridge Parkway. For mountain bikers, Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is a 12,000-plus-acre playground home to a pristine reservoir and more than 60 miles of trails. They range from beginner-friendly loops around the lake to intermediate progression routes with features and black-diamond shredders that drop from the ridge of 2,300-foot Brushy Mountain. And then there’s the hiking. The city is necklaced by the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, and the Appalachian Trail’s iconic Virginia Triple Crown of Dragon’s Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker Cliffs is just west of town. Overall, aggressive funding for outdoor infrastructure has helped transform Roanoke into a nationally renowned adventure hub, and the push has brought major accolades like designation as an International Mountain Biking Association silver-level Ride Center. For post-adventure fun, high-quality breweries like Big Lick Brewing Company are found within the metro area and quality restaurants abound. There’s also great live music at hotspots like Parkway Brewing, the Jefferson Center, and 5 Points Music Sanctuary.

Runners Up

ASHEVILLE, N.C. Asheville has long been the region’s adventure epicenter, as the vibrant city on the banks of the French Broad River has easy access to world-class mountain biking, hiking and trail running in the surrounding Pisgah National Forest, as well as in-town hotspots like the featurepacked Kolo Bike Park. CHATTANOOGA, TENN. Chattanooga is chock full of adventure opportunities. Ride

the 30 miles of purpose-built singletrack at Raccoon Mountain or head to Stone Fort for 400-plus bouldering problems on some premiere Southern sandstone.

MEDIUM TOWN

FRONT ROYAL, VIRGINIA This under-the-radar town near the Appalachian Trail has revitalized its once sleepy turn-of-the-century Main Street into a parade of local shops, eateries, small businesses and drink spots—including multiple craft brewery and spirits operations. Simultaneous breakthroughs in Shenandoah Valley viticulture have peppered the surrounding countryside with view-rich and visitworthy wineries. And for the foodieadventurers out there: James Beard Foundation Great Culinary Inn, L’Auberge Provençale, dishes up superb, wine-paired fine-dining just a few miles north of the action. Outdoorsy Virginians primarily know Front Royal as the northern gateway to Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive. The proximity—and an A.T. roadcrossing just four miles from town— makes for top-notch hiking options. The Dickey Trail, for example, pursues its namesake ridge from the south side of town and climbs to hidden, westward views of the nookish Page Valley, Massanutten Mountain range, and Alleghanies. The area is also known for caves. The closest is Skyline Caverns, which sits just two miles from downtown. Subterranean tours last about an hour and carry visitors through fairytale rooms of stone that boast highlights like rare, seaurchin-esque anthodite formations. A scenic, 25-mile cruise south to Luray offers more underground entertainment at the town’s eponymous caverns. Water-based adventures, meanwhile, come courtesy of the Shenandoah River South Fork. The waterway snakes through the bucolic Page Valley for 55 miles to converge with a sister fork just north of Front Royal. Numerous outfitters service the span, offering canoe, kayak and tube trips. WINTER HAS A WAY OF MAKING the couch look like the best vacation destination. But strap on cross-country skis or snowshoes, and there’s a whole world of frosted forests waiting beyond the living room. These four spots offer plenty of reasons to brave the cold, plus places to warm up when your toes have had enough.

White Grass Touring Center

CANAAN VALLEY, WEST VIRGINIA At White Grass, bring warm clothes and a willingness to find your footing. Staff will handle the rest,

from rental gear and lessons to helping you choose a route through 2,500 acres of winter terrain, with groomed trails starting right outside the lodge. “We are set up for either firsttimers or seasoned experts,” says owner Chip Chase, who helped open White Grass in Canaan Valley in 1981. “Friendly and comfortable, inside and out.” For a gentle start, Chase suggests 3 Mile, an out-and-back route where you can turn around whenever you’ve had your fill. Farther afield, trails climb toward Bald Knob, with shelters scattered

along the way. Some even have wood stoves, which is a fine excuse to linger. Snowshoers have trails of their own, too. When you’re ready to trade the trail for a table, the lodge café serves a killer vegetarian chili and a convincingly meaty sweet potato and black bean burrito. Wash it down with hot spiced cider, then see if you’re up for another lap before settling into a room or cabin at nearby Canaan Valley Resort State Park. For the best shot at snow, Chase recommends mid-January through early March. Check the White Grass Daily Report before you drive,

though. Mountain weather has never cared about your weekend plans.

BLOWING ROCK, NORTH CAROLINA Known as the “Denim King,” textile mogul Moses Cone used his fortune to build a mountain retreat near Blowing Rock with his wife, Bertha. Beginning in the late 1800s, they shaped an estate with a grand house, orchards, and miles of carriage roads that, more than a century later, make for a pretty fine winter playground.

“The trails at Cone Park are wide and gently sloping,” says Amanda Fife Lugenbell of the Blowing Rock Tourism Development Authority. “They remain well-maintained today, meandering through forests and to picturesque vistas.” When Old Man Winter cooperates, the park’s roughly 25 miles of carriage trails welcome cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Beginners can ease into things on the flat, 0.9-mile loop around Bass Lake. For more of a workout, follow Duncan Road uphill toward Flat Top Manor, a roughly five-mile outing if you go all the way and back. Rich Mountain Road, accessed near Trout Lake, stretches 2.6 miles each way, with a steady climb and mountain views to reward the effort. Afterward, head into Blowing Rock for dinner at Bistro Roca,

New Germany State Park and Savage River State Forest

GRANTSVILLE, MARYLAND Western Maryland once had a nickname that sounds suspiciously like tourism people got carried away: the “Maryland Alps.” But after a good snowfall, New Germany State Park’s wooded hills and snowladen evergreens make a pretty good case for it. Fortunately, you don’t need Alpine skills to explore it. Rent a pair of cross-country skis at the Lake House and ease into things on the Turnpike, a wide, mostly flat 0.8-mile trail that follows Poplar

Lick, a stream that looks particularly fetching under a coat of snow. For more of a workout, try the 2.5-mile Dynamite Shack Loop. It climbs more than 400 feet and passes the remains of a shack once used by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Snowshoers are welcome on the park’s trails, as long as they stay off the ski tracks. Want to get farther into the woods? Neighboring Savage River State Forest has about nine miles of ski and snowshoe trails near the Mt. Aetna tract. You’ll need to bring your own gear for that outing, but the extra quiet may be worth the trouble. Afterward, head into Grantsville for a country-style meal at the Casselman Inn & Restaurant. Save room for something from its downstairs bakery, which turns out homemade breads, cakes, and pies. You can stay upstairs at the historic inn, too.

WINTER BIRDING IN VIRGINIA STATE PARKS

Winter may bring colder temperatures and quieter trails, but it also offers a wonderful opportunity to discover Virginia’s birdlife. Without the thick foliage of spring and summer, birds can be easier to spot among bare branches, along woodland edges, and near lakes and rivers. From elegant tundra swans to soaring hawks and gathering waterfowl, Virginia’s State Parks offer plenty of reasons to bundle up, grab a pair of binoculars, and explore.

WINTER’S FEATHERED FRIENDS

Winter birding is all about slowing down, looking closely, and listening for activity in the landscape. Several Virginia State Parks offer memorable opportunities to observe seasonal visitors and year-round residents. At Mason Neck State Park, winter brings the chance to see tundra swans, large white birds that migrate south from their Arctic breeding grounds. Their graceful presence on the water makes them a seasonal highlight. Pocahontas State Park offers woodland birding opportunities, with red-tailed hawks surveying the landscape and double-crested cormorants gathering near the water Meanwhile, Belle Isle State Park features seven miles of shoreline, tidal wetlands, farmland, and forests, providing varied habitats where visitors may spot bald eagles and other birds. Bring binoculars, dress in warm layers, and move quietly to improve your chances of spotting wildlife without disturbing it!

FIND BIRDS ALONG THE WATER

Lakes, rivers, and coastal wetlands are particularly rewarding places to explore during winter, when waterfowl gather in suitable habitats. At York River State Park, Taskinas Creek and the York River provide opportunities to look for wintering waterfowl while enjoying

scenic trails and shoreline views. For a coastal adventure, head to False Cape State Park, where the park’s unique environment attracts migrating waterfowl and other birds. Exploring different habitats throughout the season can reveal a surprising variety of species, even on familiar trails. Take time to scan the water for groups of ducks, check exposed branches for perched birds, and watch the sky for hawks and eagles.

MAKE YOUR BIRDWATCHING COUNT

Winter birding can also support scientific research. Each February, the Great Backyard Bird Count invites people worldwide to observe birds and share sightings to help researchers track bird populations. Participate from a Virginia State Park by spending at least 15 minutes birdwatching and submitting your observations. No expert knowledge is required! Whether you’re watching tundra swans at Mason Neck or searching for hawks at Pocahontas, winter offers a fresh perspective on Virginia’s State Parks and natural landscapes. Keep a list of sightings, revisit favorite locations, and enjoy the discoveries that come with every outing. All it takes is a warm coat, a little patience, and a willingness to look a little closer.

PL AN YOUR VIRGINIA STATE PARK WINTER BIRDING ADVENTURE!

Virginia State Parks are part of the Virginia Bird and Wildlife Trail, a statewide network featuring 65 trail loops and more than 600 viewing sites. Grab your binoculars and field guide, then explore the habitats and feathered residents that make the Commonwealth a birding destination. SKIJORING in the South While much more popular abroad and out west, this Scandinavian snow sport has made small inroads in the Blue Ridge BY J A R R E T T VA N M E T E R

FINN RYBACK WAS BORN WITH all the makings for a strong winter athlete: thick hair, strong legs, and innate energy, to name just a few. Add in that his dad, Rudy, was on the Nordic ski team at the University of Colorado, and the younger Ryback’s fate was all but sealed on the day of his adoption back in 2021.

Finn is a dog—more specifically, a six-year-old border collie mix. Despite all his precociousness, he still needs help from Rudy, a human, for most things, including rides to the mountains near their home in Asheville, N.C., help putting on his harness, occasional directional assistance, and the judicious proctoring of snacks. In return, along with his enduring love and commitment, Finn lets Rudy tether their two bodies together a few times each winter for a bit of fun called skijoring, a Scandinavian sport in which an individual on skis is pulled behind an animal (usually a dog, horse, or reindeer) or a vehicle. Originally created as a means of travel, skijoring has become a niche activity for both dedicated competitors

and weekend hobbyists like the Rybacks. All you need are skis, something willing and/or able to pull, and snow. Ah, yes. Snow. Given this essential element, it’s no surprise that most American skijoring takes place in the mountain west. Competitions can draw big crowds and shut down small towns for a day of adrenaline, comradery, and a bit of partying. It was on just such a day, in tiny Minturn, Colorado, in 2012, that Loren Zhimanskova was introduced to the sport. A New Jersey native who had moved to nearby McCoy as an adult, Zhimanskova enjoyed riding horses and skiing, but had never thought to combine the two. Watching the horses gallop through town, the skiiers whizzing behind

them at speeds around 35 miles per hour, she was hooked. “Seeing the horses run in snow was absolutely beautiful,” she recalls. “Then seeing the skier, just flying right past...I had a front row seat because I was on the announcer’s stand, so I was getting sprayed with snow from the horses' hooves and from the skiers, and seeing them flash by me was exciting,” Zhimanskova decided to get more involved in the sport. She researched skijoring’s history. She started volunteering at more events in different states. She became the organizer for the Minturn event and started traveling to other countries to learn about the different styles and variations. Soon after

witnessing her first race in 2012, she founded Skijor International, an organization and accompanying website aimed toward promoting the sport, compiling information, and “spearheading the initiative to form a worldwide coalition” for organizing races. In the years since, American skijoring has grown from “about eight to ten races” to an expected 50 in 2027, and from just the Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming corridor to Washington state, New Mexico, Minnesota, Maine, and even Pennsylvania. But while demand is growing, the number of locations receiving enough snow is not. “It'll be more challenging, I think, as time goes on, to find or maintain regular yearly events in states that

are already experiencing warmer winters,” she says, Snowfall in the South is unlikely to ever support consistent skijoring, but there is still enough in some places for the inclined and curious to make a go of it. Liz Stout grew up riding horses and skiing in her home state of West Virginia. In 2013, a heavy snow prompted Stout, her brother, and some friends to try skijoring for the first time. It was a test run, nothing wild. They started the horse, an ArabianMorgan mare named Q, in a walk, then a trot, then cantered her in a circle. It was low key, but they all loved it. “It just makes you laugh like a little kid to be hauled around at speed,” she says.

By 2020, Elkins was living in the Canaan Valley working as a biologist. Once again, a big snowstorm rolled through. She and some friends decided to head up to nearby Flat Ridge to skijor, this time with some pace. Stout and a friend hopped aboard Griffin, a grey Arabian cross, and Stan, a chestnut quarter horse, while the others took turns being pulled behind. An experienced rider, Stout “cut the horse absolutely loose, like as fast as we could go.” “That land form is really unique in that it's just flat,” she says. “I knew from summer that it was just grass, there weren't going to be any holes, no trip hazards for the animals. So we absolutely cut loose and it was a hoot.”

Stout moved to Wymer in 2022 and her current property isn’t conducive to skijoring. She has dabbled in it with her huskies while on ski patrol at Canaan Valley Resort State Park but has yet to try again on horseback. She would like to see the sport grow in the area but acknowledges that to do so would likely require an annual local event to rally around, and that said event would have to be hosted at a resort with the capacity to create lots of man-made snow. “It would be fun if you had a resort that wanted to do it, because they could also build the jumps for the skiers or boarders to do like they have for the legit equestrian competitions,” she says. “But shy of that it'd be hard to reliably do anything.”

In North Carolina, Rudy Ryback has been pitching skijoring to some of his trail running, dog-owning friends. Most of his jaunts with Finn take place at Roan Mountain and along the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are ways to enjoy the sport without snow: in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, some devotees have taken to skijoring behind horses over dry land. In Australia, groups are riding water skis or skim boards behind horses galloping along beach shores. Ryback notes that for him, Finn, and other pairs like them, the Carolina coast might be the next southern skijoring frontier. “I think there's definitely ways to do it that way,” he says.

OUT AND BACK

CONNECTION

THE POWER OF OSMOSIS BY G R A H A M AV E R I L L

I’VE BEEN TELLING THE SAME joke about my dad for years. It goes like this: My dad only taught me two important things when I was growing up. 1. 2.

Always fry your eggs on low heat. Never buy cheap batteries.

These are both solid pieces of advice that have stuck with me through the years, but the implication

64

BLUE RIDGE OUTDOORS

of the joke is that my dad didn’t teach me anything of real significance when I was a kid. And that simply is not true. He wasn’t the kind of dad that you’d see in old TV shows who would sit his kid down on the porch and teach that kid a life lesson about dealing with bullies while also showing him how to tie a knot. That wasn’t my dad’s style. Outside of the fried eggs and cheap battery advice, I don’t think he ever tried to teach me anything about life directly. But I learned a lot

about support, patience and kindness from my dad through the way that he engaged with me as a kid. My dad and I couldn’t be more different. He was an aeronautical engineer who could talk endlessly about the principles of lift and how airplanes can defy gravity. Math and numbers and logic are how he sees the world. In the third grade, when we started having to do addition problems on a horizontal line instead of a vertical line, I lost my shit and started crying uncontrollably. Math and numbers haven’t gotten any easier for me since then. One of my dad’s most prized possessions was an abacus. A fucking abacus. Meanwhile, I just wanted to be outside and play all of the sports. A lot of parents have kids that they don’t understand and allow them to pursue their “weird” interests, but my dad went the extra step by jumping headfirst into those interests with me. When I was little, he didn’t just sign me up for little league. He signed up to be a coach, even though he didn’t know shit about the sport. When I got older and wanted to play golf, he got me a set of clubs and started taking me to play, even though he didn’t give a shit about golf. As a teenager, I wanted to learn how to ski. He brought back two pairs of skis from one of his work trips to Eastern Europe—a pair for me and a pair for him—because he was going to learn how to ski too so we could ski together. Then it was fly fishing and backpacking. At some point during college, we started doing canoe trips together because I read some Natty Bumppo novels and thought it was cool. My dad’s idea of roughing it is setting the air conditioner to 72 in July, but he repeatedly threw himself into a series of adventurous situations that were way out of his comfort zone, simply because he knew I had an interest in them. He did the most amazing thing a father can do for his son. He found a way to connect with me, even if the mode of connection was completely out of his comfort zone. My dad has Alzheimer’s and it’s progressing faster than I would like. But on one of his good days

recently we were playing poker and I asked him if his dad taught him how to play cards. “No,” he said. “The only thing my dad ever taught me was how to fish. That’s it.” By all accounts, my dad’s father was not supportive or kind or patient. He was a former semipro baseball player who didn’t understand his book-smart kid’s inclination for numbers and logic and engineering. My dad built lightning fast boxcar racers when he was a kid and raced them down the hills of his neighborhood. But he built those cars alone, because his own father didn’t have the capacity to step out of his comfort zone and try to connect. Even when they found common ground, the effort was minimal. It’s true that my grandfather taught my dad how to fish. It’s also true that they went fishing exactly once a year. But my dad is wrong when he says the only thing his father taught him was how to fish. Because my dad learned a lot about being a father from his own dad’s mistakes. He learned about the importance of support and kindness, and applied those lessons to raising his own kids. I’m not saying my dad was perfect. Honestly, he missed half of my childhood because he was gone for work, and he made some pretty significant mistakes. He was human. And I learned from those mistakes, just like my dad learned from his father’s mistakes. But I’m grateful for how my dad raised me, and for the support that he showed me. I live the life that I live, and have the career that I have, because my father learned how to ski with me, and navigated canoes down rivers with me, and lugged backpacks up mountains with me. I was on a camping trip with my son recently and he told me that he’s glad his mom and I raised him and his sister in the outdoors. He said he’s glad he knows how to start a fire and set up a camp. He’s glad that we taught him an appreciation for the wilder side of life. That’s the direct influence I’ve had on him, but I wonder what other lessons he’s learning by osmosis. I hope those lessons are as beneficial as what my father accidentally taught me.

OUR FAVORITE SONGS FOR LATE FALL

Best New Music from the Blue Ridge and Beyond BY JEDD F ERRIS A ND DAVE STAL L AR D

IN EVERY ISSUE, OUR EDITORS curate a playlist of new music, mainly focusing on independent artists from the South. This November and December we’re highlighting new tunes from Jeff Parker and Rayland Baxter, plus a creative Neil Young cover by My Morning Jacket.

ERIC SLICK “Mannequin” Eric Slick—the Dr. Dog drummer and prolific collaborator with the likes of Waxahatchee—is going for big sounds on an upcoming solo record, “Bounce House,” which will be out in March of next year. “Mannequin,” the first single to surface, is a synth-heavy dance jam with some full-throttle guitar distortion and a heart-bleeding chorus inspired by ‘70s no-wave music. – J.F.

JEFF PARKER “Miles’ Mode” To mark what would’ve been John Coltrane’s 100th birthday back in September, inventive guitar wiz Jeff Parker—best known for his work with post-rock heroes Tortoise—released a fresh take on this jazz staple originally found on the 1962 album “Coltrane.” Joined by tenor saxophonist Chris Speed, drummer Aaron Steele, and bassist Kaveh Rastegar, Parker and his crew of fellow players from the Los Angeles music scene lean into the Coltrane composition with fluid precision, coloring a driving rhythm with stellar, free-form solos. – J.F.

BOB DYLAN & THE ROLLING THUNDER REVUE “Going, Going, Gone” Dylan fans should be apoplectic over the November 6 release of “The Rolling Thunder Revue: The

1976 Live Recordings.” 371 previously unreleased tracks, chronicling 27 tour dates between April and May of 1976, are covered in a staggering 39 discs. “Going, Going, Gone” is pulled from the May 16th performance in Fort Worth, Texas, and showcases Dylan’s growling, heart wrenching bitterness over a love gone bad. – D.S.

JAKE BUGG “Never Can Tell” British singer-songwriter Jake Bugg was floating in rarefied air while just a teenager when his self-titled debut album reached number one on the UK album chart in 2012. Now a wizened 32 years old, Bugg has returned with his seventh album, “Alamo,” where he leans more heavily into his folk-rock roots. “Never Can Tell,” built over interplay between tasty electric guitar runs and a jangly acoustic riff, is an exploration of doubt and trusting your instincts when faced with life’s uncertainties. – D.S.

the Black” features contributions from Modest Mouse, Lucinda Williams, and Los Lobos. A standout is My Morning Jacket’s creative reading of “Like a Hurricane,” which starts with moody organ and atmospheric horns from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, before kicking into a higher gear with some of the guitar fuzz that the original is known for. – J.F.

RAYLAND BAXTER “Bolly Plateau” Rayland Baxter is in a reflective mood on his new album, “True Violet,” a record that finds him processing the loss of his father, well-known Nashville pedal steel player and former Bob Dylan sideman Bucky Baxter. On this haunting folk track, he sings about feeling isolated in the Tennessee hills, ruminating on a failed relationship and searching for a path towards self-improvement. – J.F.

R.E.M. MY MORNING JACKET “Like a Hurricane” Two new volumes in a series of Neil Young tribute albums drop on November 6. “Heart Of Gold Vol. 2 - Out of the Blue” and “Vol. 3 - Into

“Imitation of Life” Long one of the band’s most underrated records, 2001’s “Reveal” celebrates its 25th anniversary

this year. In honor of the record’s silver jubilee, Craft Recordings will drop an anniversary edition on November 20. This expanded issue includes a previously unreleased 2001 live performance from Radio France, known as the Black Sessions, which features this rendition of the record’s first hit single, “Imitation of Life,” along with some of the earliest performances of the tracks that would become “Reveal.” – D.S.

NEAL CASAL “Muscatine” The 12 tracks that make up “Book of Stories (Home Recordings 19982003)” came to be after singersongwriter Neal Casal was given an analog tape recorder and other essential recording equipment by a producer friend. After learning the art of home recording, Casal set about committing his songs to tape, and fans who have mourned since Casal’s passing in 2019 will rejoice in this release. Varying from sparse, acoustic renderings to full band arrangements, this intimate collection is an emotional return to an artist who was gone too soon. – D.S.
