While you’re

Hi kids!

All of us who work here at the hospital want you to know that we only want you to feel better. You just might even make some new friends along the way!

Well, I guess your own doctor has explained to you why you need to be in the hospital. First, you have to go through “admitting.” That’s where your parents and the hospital staff write down a bunch of stuff about you and why you are here. Then you get a bracelet with your name on it that you get to wear the whole time you are here. They like to keep things clean around the hospital, so you might have to use special soap and shampoo when you take a bath. Don’t worry about being lonely; your mom and dad can stay with you all the time! One thing is for sure: you won’t be bored! Hospitals have lots of fun things for kid patients. Just ask your nurse or child life specialist about activities that you might be able to do — they will have lots of ideas! If you think you might fall behind in school while you’re here, many hospitals have schoolrooms that you can attend. There might even be a teacher that can come to your room to help you. Just ask the nurse. Sometimes you will get special meals that are different than at home, but they are made to help you get better. If you’re having an operation, you might not be able to eat or drink for hours before. Just remember that it’s not because anyone has forgotten about you or anything; it’s just that eating or drinking can make you sick during the operation. Well, I hope I have answered some of the questions you may have been thinking about. If you have any other questions, just ask the nurse or doctor and they will be able to fill you in.

Not all Heroes

Wear Capes

Now, when you think of heroes, you might think of Superman, Batman or Wonderwoman. As fantastic as they are, not all heroes are characters in your favorite comic or movie. A hero could be right beside you - or even you yourself could be someone’s hero.

To be a hero is to be brave, to be strong and to fight for the good in the world! When you get hurt or get sick, you will go through a line of heroes to ensure the quickest, safest & most healthy way to make sure you get better. At first, you will be surrounded by lots of different faces, questions and tests, and they may not seem like heroes at first, but we are here to help you see why they do what they do, and why they are heroes too!

8

Here are the services you’ll go through, in order to get you back to yourself! 1. Police

Sometimes the police can be scary, because they have a serious job to do - protecting you & everyone around you from danger. The police can make sure that other people are a safe distance, & other vehicles in the area are directed to a safer destination. They move quickly - like the hero, The Flash!

2. Fire Department

The fire department does more than just putting out fires around the city. Like the police, firefighters will make sure no more harm will come to you, or the people around you. They will help move things out of way, and secure the space around you for the professionals to work their best! Like the Fantastic 4, they are a team!

3. Ambulance

These are the people you will see the most - EMT’s & paramedics will make sure they check out every limb and will get you stable for your trip to see the nurses & doctors. The doctors & nurses will be ready to see you as soon as you arrive. Like Superman & Wonderwoman, they are here to save the day!

SCENARIO MATCH NOW let’s see if you can help Sandy & Simon out. Sandy & Simon have come across their friend Bradley who has slipped on his scooter. He doesnt know who he will see on his trip to the doctor - can you help him match his questions to the services he Solution on page 48

10

will see? Draw a line to the right service!

I fell on my street!

Bradley slipped off his scooter on his street, & he should not move to make sure he is safe. This means that other people & vehicles need to give him space. They will need a TEAM to keep the streets & cars away from Bradley. Which team can help clear the way?

I am scared - who will come?

Accidents are very scary, but professional heroes move FAST. Bradley will see many people, but the first car to come will arrive quickly & let everyone else down the line know Bradley needs help. Who will speed to Bradley to make sure he gets help?

My arm hurts!

Although Bradley may be very hurt & scared, there are people on their way to stabilize and make Bradley feel better, as well as get him to the doctor as fast as they can! These SUPER persons will get Bradley in his best shape before the hospital. Who will take Bradley to the doctor?

My Body is My Own

Have you ever heard a little voice inside your head telling you, “This doesn’t feel

right,” or “I wonder what I should do?” or “This is fun!”? Have you ever had a feeling right down in the pit of your stomach — sometimes called a “gut feeling” — telling you whether you feel good or bad about a certain situation? Well, sometimes we ignore these feelings, these little voices, because we doubt them, or because we’re too scared to tell anyone about them.

trust yourself – you are trustworthy It’s really okay to listen to these feelings and trust them. Your insides don’t lie! Did you know that you have certain rights as a kid, rights which no one should ever even dream of taking away from you? These rights are here to protect you and keep you safe. But if you ever feel funny about something — like when things just don’t seem right to you — but you’re too scared to say anything, try thinking of a person that you know who you really, really trust. This person could be a teacher, a babysitter, your mom or dad, a friend’s mom or dad, an aunt, an uncle, your doctor — anyone that you feel totally safe with.

It’s okay to talk about stuff with them. They really do care about you and will trust your gut feelings. And if, for whatever reason, they don’t, then go to the next person on your list until you find someone who does! Honour your feelings — learn to trust them. Take time to read the following page and learn what some of your rights are. Every one of you is special, and you deserve to have every one of these needs met.

Remember, trust yourself — YOU are trustworthy!

feeling

If you made a list of all of the different types of feelings you felt today, how many do you think you’d come up with — happy, angry, silly, scared, excited, lonely, joyful...? There are just so many different types that, sometimes, we don’t even know how or what we are feeling. All feelings, whether pleasant or difficult, are normal — in fact, it is very important that we listen to these feelings because, for whatever reason, they are trying to tell us a very important message. Expressing your feelings can be hard to do. One way that you can do this is by drawing how or what you feel. Try drawing what you’re feeling right now. Or, try drawing a whole bunch of different feelings — as many as you can think of. If you want to, you can share your drawings with someone you trust.

Fire!

Fire

!

“Ding, ding, ding!!!” goes the bell. Oh oh — there must be a fire somewhere. Time for our brave firefighters to slither down their fire pole in pursuit of a flaming blaze. Have you ever wished you could climb onto the back of a fire truck as it races down the street? “What does it look like inside of a fire truck?” you may ask yourself. “What can it actually do?

20

! e r i F Well, did you know that there are 5 different kinds of fire trucks, all designed for battling certain types of blazes? There’s a Pumper Truck, which can pump 1,250 gallons of water every minute — that equals 15,000 glasses of water! A Heavy Duty Rescue Truck carries tools to help get people out of car wrecks or other places where they may be stuck. A Yellow Aerial Ladder Truck carries ladders & tools that allow firefighters to reach and rescue people who may be trapped inside. A Quint Truck does the work of both a pumper & ladder truck. Quint means “5” — this truck has ground ladders, an aerial ladder, a pump, water tank, and hose. And finally, a Tiller Truck is used for fires that rage in high up places — about the height of a ten-storey high-rise. This truck has 2 steering wheels and 2 drivers. The driver in the back controls the rear wheels of the truck, which allows this extremely long truck to go around corners easily.

Simply amazing!

It’s All in the Stars Stars...

How far away are we from the stars? Have you ever looked up into the sky at

night-time and wondered how far away the stars are from you? Well, did you know that they are so far away that it actually takes oodles and oodles of years for their light to travel, to get close enough for us to actually see them twinkle at night? In fact, the twinkling light that you see when you look at a star is so far away that it has actually taken about 4 billion — yes, 4 BILLION — years to reach your eyes. “Well,” you may be wondering, “what does this mean?” I’ll give you a hint — try to figure out what type of animal roamed our planet long before humans inhabited the Earth? (Hint: some are really big; some are quite small; a lot of them help to make the different appliances in The Flintstones work.)

If you guessed “dinosaurs,” you’re right! The starlight that you see tonight actually left those distant stars long BEFORE even the dinosaurs lived!!

Astounding!!

Questions Questions Questions H

ow many times have you wished you knew the answers to the questions that pop into your head? — especially those questions that are worrisome to you... questions you might be afraid to ask of others. When you question something, it’s because you don’t understand or there’s something more you’d like to know — and when you’re unsure of things, you can become frightened of them. Finding the answers to your questions can make your uncertainties go away. “But who should I ask my questions of?” you might wonder. There are many people who can answer the questions that are most worrisome to you. Loved ones — like your family and close friends, and people you trust — like doctors, counsellors, teachers, or police officers. With your help, they can often answer the questions you’re most afraid to ask... and make the worry go away!

? ? ?

Use this space to write out those questions you’d like to ask. And remember... no question is too goofy or silly!! If you feel comfortable, share them with someone, and you can talk about your questions together.

On the farm with Sam & Sandy Let’s take a trip to the farm today.

W

hat kinds of things will we find? Hmmmm Sam and Sandy see a red, wooden barn house with a bird’s nest up in the rafters; some black and white cows grazing in that field over there; a group of clucking chickens busily pecking at their food in the chicken coop; endless fields of crops softly blowing in the wind; bales of hay in that other field over there; a tractor sitting in the yard out front; a milking parlour just behind the house — lots of neat things!! Even if you don’t live on a farm, farming is all around you and is very important to all of us. We depend upon farming to provide us with food, clothes, and other things that we use everyday. Farmers are our friends — they are very important to us because they know how to turn crops and animals into products we can use. Farmers are also very careful about protecting our land and water so that plants and animals can grow strong and healthy.

Sam and Sandy always have a lot of fun when they’re on the farm, but they are always very careful not to get hurt. There are lots of pieces of equipment and places on the farm that can get you into trouble if you’re not careful, so stay far away from these unless you’re with an adult. Always let an adult know what you’re doing and where you’re going. Remember, always think before you act. As Sam and Sandy say:

“Stop, think, and stay safe!” Then you’re sure to have oodles of fun.

Hope you’re back on track soon!

iracles happen everyday! Just when things seem really bad, something wonderful can happen.

Sometimes miracles need a helping hand. You can help make miracles happen by believing in yourself. It may seem hard to think that you can help make a miracle happen when you’re just a kid, but you can. You need to think good thoughts and talk to adults that can help you, like your doctor or your parents. Making yourself feel better inside can help make miracles happen.

Bath Time! Keeping your furry puppy-friend clean is a very important step in keeping him healthy and happy. Here are some tips on how to bathe your best friend: • Have the area where you will wash and dry him — as well as the equipment you need — ready beforehand. He may try to get away from you during bathing! • Dogs only need bathing when they are dirty or if your veterinarian says so. • Bathe your dog outdoors in warm weather. This keeps him from getting a chill, and it’s a lot less messy! • Have a tub half filled with warm water — not too warm, though. • Use a mild shampoo (such as baby shampoo), or dog shampoo, or one your vet recommended. Remember to always read the instructions carefully. • Have an old, clean towel ready to dry him. Depending on the breed, you may want to use a hair-dryer too. • Gently lift your dog into the water. Do not attempt to lift the dog if he is too heavy; get someone to help you. • Use a clean jug to pour the warm water over your dog from the back of his neck downwards, doing his head last. • Start by applying the shampoo to his body and legs. • Rub the shampoo well into his coat. • Shampoo his head last, paying special care to ensure no shampoo gets into his eyes. • Rinse the shampoo by pouring warm water onto his coat — be sure you have enough! • Your dog will probably shake himself all over. This will remove most of the water from his coat. Use the towel to dry off the remaining water. • You can complete the drying by using the hair-dryer on a low temperature setting and using a brush to speed up the drying process considerably.
