Graduation at Our Lady of Victory Basilica is one of the most meaningful and beautiful traditions we have at St. Francis High School. It’s also one of my personal favorites. Our students, dressed in tuxedos, surrounded by the grandeur of the Basilica, the majesty of the organ, and the reverence of Eucharistic Benediction. It all creates a moment that stays with you forever.
This year was no different. We celebrated the members of the Class of 2025 as they became alumni and began the next chapter of their journeys. They are heading off to colleges and careers across the country. As they processed out of the Basilica, I was filled with pride and hope for who they are becoming.
If you’ve visited the Basilica recently, you’ve seen the copper dome undergoing restoration. Even now, you can catch glimpses of its brilliance as the sun strikes the newly replaced panels. What we see now is a hint of the beauty of when the restoration is complete. I can only imagine what it will look like when it is finished. The best is yet to come.
As I looked at our seniors on graduation day, I remembered them as freshmen, cheering them on the field, applauding them on the stage, watching them grow into Franciscan young men. Like the dome, they are being shaped and refined. As seniors, we’ve seen previews of the men they are becoming. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them. Their best is yet to come.
This summer, we marked a major milestone in our school’s history—the 100th anniversary of the laying of our cornerstone. In our chapel, Friar Alex Cymerman ’56 reflected on how our founder, Fr. Justin Figas dreamed of building our school. It was in our chapel that Friar Alex’s vocation was nurtured. That legacy lives on today.
This issue of The Tau celebrates many of the great things that happened this year: our Fine Arts program earning national recognition in New Orleans and at Shea’s Theater; new partnerships with local universities to expand dual enrollment; the launch of our Business Academy, the continued growth of our House System; and campus facility upgrades over the summer. We are building something lasting.
As we honor our legacy, our eyes are fixed firmly on the future. We are preparing for our next 100 years. We are preparing with faith, with boldness, and with a deep belief in the Franciscan mission entrusted to us.
I’m excited to be part of this journey with you.
The best is yet to come.
Peace and good,
Friar Matt
Remembering David G. nease
The St. Francis community mourns the loss of Mr. David Nease, whose life and work left an enduring mark on generations of students.
Mr. Nease joined St. Francis in 1970, directing Oliver!, the school’s first musical, and later served on the faculty for 39 years. As the founding chair of the Fine Arts Department, he guided its growth with vision and passion, establishing the Fine Arts Banquet, founding a chapter of the Performing and Visual Arts Society, and nurturing a culture where the arts could flourish.
Fine Arts Banquet
More than a teacher, Mr. Nease was a mentor, friend, and embodiment of the Franciscan spirit. His deep faith, quiet wisdom, and generosity shaped countless lives, making him a true cornerstone of the school community.
As St. Francis prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary, the community remembers with gratitude a man who built something far greater than bricks: a legacy of music, art, and Franciscan values that continues to inspire.
The 51st annual Fine Arts Banquet was held at Ilio DiPaolos restaurant on May 18th. The event each year recognizes the accomplishments of our young artists and all they have achieved throughout the year! Among the many awards given out, eligible students are also inducted into the Performing and Visual Arts Society, a national organization whose membership is highly selective. Additionally, two of our Alumni were inducted into the St. Francis High School David G. Nease Fine Arts Hall of Fame. Mr. David Cuddihy (Class of 1987), and Staff Sergeant Michael Maroney (Class of 2013) were honored for their contributions in the field of music. Both recipients spoke to the students, offering advice on how to continue their tradition of excellence post graduation.
For their participation in Fine Arts activities during the course of the year, 19 students were inducted into the Performing And Visual Arts Society. 14 students received Minor Letters, 22 Major Letters and 15 students received Senior Service Awards.

By Sue Schaffstall
A building cannot stand without a solid foundation— and neither can a legacy. For nearly a century, St. Francis High School has stood tall on the shores of Lake Erie, its mission rooted in the values of Saint Francis of Assisi and the vision of one determined friar. As we look ahead to our Centennial Celebration in 2027, we pause to remember where it all began— and why.
July 12, 1927: t he Day It All Began
On a warm summer day in 1927, the cornerstone was laid at St. Francis High School, marking the beginning of a journey that would shape the lives of thousands of young men across generations. That single stone, both literally and symbolically, represented the hopes and dreams of our founder, Fr. Justin Figas, and a small but passionate group of Polish-American businessmen known as the Justin Drivers.
What began as a dream—a Franciscan education rooted in faith, discipline, and brotherhood—became a reality through perseverance and community. The building that rose from that cornerstone would not only house classrooms, but become the spiritual and academic home of the St. Francis gentleman.
July 12, 2025: A c entury Later
Exactly 100 years to the day since the original cornerstone was laid, the St. Francis community came together to commemorate this historic milestone with a Mass and Rededication Ceremony. More than 100 alumni, faculty, friars, and friends gathered on campus to reflect on the school’s enduring mission and to give thanks for a century of formation, faith, and Franciscan brotherhood.
Friar Alex , ’56 one of the few remaining friars who personally remembers Fr. Justin, served as the homilist for the celebration. During his homily, Friar Alex offered historical context with heartfelt storytelling, noting—humorously— that while he was not present for the original laying of the cornerstone, he was here for the 25th anniversary. His reflections served as a living bridge between past and present. A special thank you to Friar Alex for sharing his stories and keeping Fr. Justin’s dream alive in our collective memory.
Music for the Mass was beautifully provided by Nick dragone ’06 and the Music Ministry from SS. Peter and Paul Church in Hamburg. Their presence added a deeply spiritual and uplifting tone to the celebration, and we are grateful for their contribution to this historic day.
Honoring the Past, Building the future
Following the Mass, guests gathered in the library for a reception catered by alumnus Vince Binder ’93, with special thanks to the Alumni Association for underwriting the event cost. As they mingled and shared memories, attendees were also given a glimpse into the school’s future: renderings of three exciting construction projects currently underway.
These include:
• Phase I I o f t he S tudent D ining R oom R enovation , generously funded by philanthropist Russell J. Salvatore, which will soon reflect the energy and community spirit of our student body.
• New Choral a nd Instrumental Music Spaces, expanding the opportunities for student expression and creativity.
• A State-of-the-Art Fitness Center, set to open in late October or early November, supporting physical wellness and team development.
The music and dining renovations are scheduled for completion by the first day of school—ensuring that this next generation of St. Francis men begins the academic year with improved spaces that reflect the values we hold dear.
t he Road to 2027
As we prepare to mark our Centennial in 2027, the rededication of the cornerstone reminds us that our foundation—both physical and spiritual—is still strong. Inspired by the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi and guided by the memory of Fr. Justin’s dream, we remain committed to forming young men who live with purpose, compassion, and conviction.
In the years ahead, we will continue doing what we do best: building young men of character, grounded in faith, and ready to make their mark on the world.

The 2025 Varsity Lacrosse season was a rollercoaster, but the Red Raiders made a strong playoff run. The parity and high level of competition in the MMHSAA was on full display this season, and after some close losses to league rivals, the team rounded into form at the end of the year to make a run for the MMHSAA championship. Unfortunately, the season would end in a heartbreaking 4-5 OT loss in the Championship game. However, the team still enjoyed success on both a group and individual level. l andon Welka was named the League’s Player of the Year, eclipsed 200 career points, and was named a USA Lacrosse All-American. In net, Brody Sam reached the 500 save mark for his career and has another season to increase that total as one of the key returners on next year’s team.
VARsIty BAseBALL
The Varsity Baseball season was marred by injury, with Seniors, Landon Guzowski and Will Hanson being either sidelined or not 100% for a majority of the season. Guzowski led the Red Raiders in On Base percentage and will continue his playing career at the next level for D’Youville University. Ryan Forringer and Luke Schaller will also be playing at the next level, attending Hilbert College in the Fall. Fellow Senior CJ Snusz will take his talents to NCCC to continue his playing career. Senior, Jake Suffoletto led the team in hits. Forringer and Junior, Luke Panzarella led the team in runs. While Dylan Noecker led the team in batting average, Evan Noecker led in stolen bases. Sophomore, Aidan Curran emerged as a key contributor for the team, and the future looks bright for this young player’s career. Highlights from the season were a season sweep over Timon and wins against Dunkirk and Clarence.
tRAck & fIeLD
St. Francis Track & Field won the 2025 All Catholic & Regular Season, going 7-0 during the spring. Pivotal wins over Canisius (83-31), St. Joe’s (82-32), and Timon (87-27) enabled the Red Raiders to win the Regular Season for the 7th straight season in the MMHSAA. St. Francis scored 171 points to win the All Catholic Title, winning by 88 points over the runner-up.
tennIs
St. Francis Tennis concluded the regular season with a record of 4-6 in the MMHSAA, with match wins posted twice each against the Park School of Buffalo and the Gow School. On May 10, the team participated in the All-Catholic Singles and Doubles Championships at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park.
