fter snorkeling with whale sharks outside of Cancun, I remember stopping at a very special spot for a swim just off of a satellite island called Isla Mujeres (“Island of Women”). While floating in salty bliss, I noticed a lovely little resort and thought to myself that I would love to stay there one day. Needless to say, I was delighted to be invited there recently, and the date happened to coincide with my daughter Jessica’s 28th birthday! Our celebration started early with champagne aboard their sleek luxury yacht used to transfer guests from Cancun to the island. It’s a beautiful trip, and we even saw a giant seat turtle swimming alongside us. In no time, we were there. Zoëtry Villa Rolandi is the fifth installment of the upscale, adult-only, all-inclusive luxury boutique series owned by AMResorts. I have stayed at others, and they have never disappointed. Their Endless Privileges program includes everything: gourmet, no reservation fare, 24/7 room service, unlimited high-end spirits, many activities, and even free international calling. And service is always over-the-top.

With only 28 suites, all oceanfront, you get the feeling you’re staying at someone’s private villa rather than a hotel. And though two infinity pools, a saltwater Jacuzzi and a waterfall beckoned, the two of us are sea spirits, and so instantly ran for their beautiful beach. Later, we enjoyed beach butler service and tropical cocktails for lunch. Our split-level suite room was gorgeous, with a stunning, unfettered sea view. And though leaving the balcony hot tub was tough, dinner awaited at Le Métissage – their French-Mexican fusion enclave. The chef/owner made Jessica a special vegan meal for her birthday that was as delicious as it was animal-free, but that’s not surprising since Zoëtry has always been very adaptable to restricted diets. And though there are only two dining spots, guests are welcome to also dine at a dozen other AMResorts throughout the Cancun/Riviera region through their Sip, Savor and See program. After a nightcap at their fun and friendly lobby bar, we retired easily with the sound of the waves lapping right outside our door.
