SUDBURY WOLVES MEDIA / SCOUTING NOTES
Friday, October 17th, 2025 | Sudbury Wolves vs. Soo Greyhounds
For the first time this season, the northern rival Sudbury Wolves and Soo Greyhounds are set to clash in the OHL’s inaugural Rivalry Week. This game marks the first of a home-and-home series against the Greyhounds, with the second game set for October 18th at 7:07pm in the Soo. The Rivalry Week series is expected to bring out the best in both teams as they battle for northern supremacy. The Wolves enter the matchup sitting 5th in the Central Division with a record of 1-7-1-0, including a 0-1-1-0 record at home, and a 16-0-0 record on the road. The Greyhounds are currently positioned 2nd in the West Division with a 7-4-00 record. At home, the Greyhounds have a 3-2-0-0 and a road record of 4-2-0-0.
The Soo Greyhounds have seen many great defencemen over the years, highlighted by the likes of Paul Coffey and Darnell Nurse, and they have another rising star in Chase Reid. After an impressive rookie campaign that saw him post 40 points in 39 games, Reid has taken his game to another level in his sophomore season, recording 12 points through his first 11 games, putting him on pace for 74 points this season. His strong start has him sitting second in scoring among OHL defencemen, putting him in the race to become the league’s top-scoring blueliner, a feat last achieved by a Greyhound in 2018–19, when Mac Hollowell recorded 77 points in 64 games. This season also marks Reid’s NHL Draft-eligible year, and he’s already drawing significant attention from scouts, ranking as high as 10th overall on early 2026 draft lists. As the season progresses, Reid will look to continue providing elite-level offence from the back end, while solidifying his position as one of the OHL’s best defencemen and a top NHL prospect.
This past Sunday saw Jan Chovan find the back of the net for his first career OHL goal against the Niagara IceDogs. Chovan joins a small group of just eight Slovakian-born players to have suited up for the Sudbury Wolves, a list highlighted by former Wolves star Dalibor Dvorský. Dvorský made a major impact during his lone 2023-24 season in Sudbury, recording 45 goals and 43 assists for 88 points, giving him an impressive 1.69 points per game ranking fourth in the league. Aside from sharing both their Slovak heritage and Wolves ties, Chovan and Dvorský also teamed up at the 2025 World Juniors, where they played key roles in helping Team Slovakia reach the quarterfinals. As the 2025–26 season continues, Chovan will look to build on his early milestone and follow in Dvorský’s footsteps, becoming a driving force as the Wolves aim to bounce back from a slow start.

SUDBURY - SOO RIVALRY HAS SEEN EVERYTHING by Randy Pascal
Over the course of their 50+ year, 364 game rivalry to date, the Sudbury Wolves and Soo Greyhounds have seen virtually everything that can happen in the game of hockey. This week, the Highway 17 series features a home and home set, the only two games on hand for the Nickel City crew on the weekend.
While there are countless examples of them being separated by a day of rest in between, the notion of facing these teams off on successive nights is not a new one. This coming weekend marks the 11th time the teams will play a two in two set, with the vast majority of those taking place between 1976 and 1983.
In fact, eight such matchups took place in that stretch of time, including three back-to-back encounters during the 1981-1982 campaign with the Greyhounds picking up four of the six wins that year. Those early series included some very wonky results, beginning in 1976-1977 when the Wolves rebounded from a 6-1 loss on October 5th and trounced the Hounds 14-2 the next night at Sudbury Arena.
While recent examples of back-to-back games on back-to-back nights between these teams has been more rare, the Wolves are hoping to break what is a relatively limited, though negative, trend. In the Covid-affected 2021-2022 season, Sudbury and the Sault would meet a grand total of 11 times, including three times in regular season play in April.
On Friday, April 8th, Cole MacKay netted a hat trick as the Greyhounds toppled the Wolves 8-4, with Ryan Smith, Liam Ross, Kocha Delic and David Goyette replying in a losing cause for Sudbury. Heading to the Lock City on Saturday night (April 9th), the Pack opened the scoring courtesy of Kocha Delic, only to see the Hounds answer with five straight, including two from former Wolves defenseman Jack Thompson.
One year ago, Sudbury captured two games of the six encounters the teams contested, with both victories coming at home. Alex Pharand scored twice and Kieron Walton added another as coach Scott Barney and staff helped guide their squad to a 3-1 victory on October 16th (2024). Early in the new year (January 8th), Kocha Delic buried a hat trick leading the Wolves to a 7-1 win over Sault Ste Marie.
GAME NIGHT & PROMOTIONS
Friday’s game is proudly sponsored by Vitto Brand Foods Ltd., who are celebrating their 50th anniversary of serving the Sudbury community. Friday is Hot Dog Night, including a Hot Dog Eating Competition during the second intermission, with big prizes on the line.
