Content 01 - Public Space Design: Hubbali, India 02 - Tradeston: Expanding the City Centre, Glasgow, Scotland 03 - Low-Emission Mobility Zone Proposal, Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad 04 - Karlshorst: New Residential Neighbourhood, Germany I’m sharing projects of mine in the order of the most recent to the oldest. The most recent urban design contribution, was as an urban design intern at Jana Urban Space, where I helped shape a proposal for a public space around a Mandir and pedestrian spaces along a road in Majunath Nagar, Hubbali, Karnataka, India as part of a Hubbali Smart City project. The second project was my final master’s studio project, which was focused on transit-oriented planning and the last one is a greenfield housing township project during my bachelor’s. The third project proposal was the most recent project, a proposal for a low-emission mobility zone in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad at ITDP India.

Anand Nagar Main Road, Pedestrian Realm Proposal for space along Anand Nagar Main Road, Hubbali As part of the Hubbali Smart City Limited our firm was contracted to design smart street projects. The proposal put a strong emphasis on biopohilic design, trying to use the existing topography of the city as and advantage and reduce slope interference, as well as trying to provide space for exisiting small-scale commerce and gastronomy.

Local Street Proposal

Furthermore, we provided a proposal to redesign smaller pedestrian streets in the neighbourhood to create a comprehensive street network hierarchy. In these streets several traffic calming measures are proposed to calm down traffic. This will faciliate leisure activities, specifically for children.

Area Delineation of LEZ Zones Proposal by ITDP India

2

We proposed a low-emission mobility zone on the lines of international examples, such as London, Paris or Singapore. The aim was to create a proposal, which is politically feasible and technically easily implmentable. The Pune city administrators should be convinced to undertake this scheme, for the first time in India. Furthermore the proposal should in sychron with national, state and city level policies, such as the scrappage policy or the EV Adoption policy of PMC and PCMC.

We analyzed RTO data and data collected by ITDP from petrol pumps and observed that older vehicles with Bharat Standard 1,2 and 3 have a low composition among the vehicular fleet. Amongst vehicles with a older Bharat Emissions Standard, have a higher share of diesel vehicles.

03 - Low-Emission Mobility Zone Proposal Pune

ITDP India, Pune Office

The aim is to have all petrol vehicles with a minimum of Bharat Standard 4 and all diesel vehicles with a minimum of Bharat Standard 6. The proposal to city officials would be to slowly implement a pollution tax on polluting vehicles, with slowly increasing the stringecny of measures.

From analysing our data, we came to a conclusion that vehicles with older Bharat Emission Standards with diesel fuel, are the most viable to introduce a pollution tax on. It will have the least pushback and due to the nature of India’s economy most vehicles are Bharat Emission Standards 4 and 6.

04 - Karlshorst: A New Residential Neighbourhood

We proposed a neighbourhood, which is dense, vibrant, green and tranquil at the same time. The designed neighbourhood is in the eastern suburbs of Berlin. The site is a historic-industrial wasteland.

Concept The site is located on a former aircraft hanger built in the early 20th century. It was also the place Germany signed the declaration of defeat to the Soviet Union.

To fill in the space around the aircraft hangar we inspired ourselves from ice shields to design new urban blocks.

Karlshorst

01 - Karlshorst: A New Residential Neighbourhood

Urban Morphology/Typology We formalized the initial concept into a semi grid network, which considers the shape of the site. The main entry point of the site was from the north and aricraft hangar were built linear from north to south. This was to be our main urban road.

01 - Karlshorst: A New Residential Neighbourhood

After finalizing the urban blocks, we chose a perimeter block development, typical for Northern Europe and Berlin.

3D visualization To visualize our design, we regularly built and adapted a 3D model of our design.

01 - Karlshorst: A New Residential Neighbourhood

3D visualization We experimented with the height of buildings and discussed where urban focus points would be suitable. Our focal points would have buildings of higher building heights.

Street Typology

We designed 4 types of streets for our neighbourhood. A local street where vehicles should maintain minimum speed to allow safety for children to play on the street.. A pedestrian avenue for commerce and leisure. As well as urban/local main streets, where space for vehicle traffic, bicycle traffic and pedestrian traffic would be equally provided.

01 - Karlshorst: A New Residential Neighbourhood

Street Hierarchy/ Public Spaces

The main street penetrates the neighbourhood from the north to south, four public spaces are situated along this main avenue. This was created by changing the dimensions of the urban blocks. The local main streets go perpendicularily towards the west and east direction. All other street are local streets.
