he all-new Isuzu D-Max pickup makes its way to Cagayan de Oro City in a launching event, October 15, at the Limketkai Center Atrium. The launch is graced by the ISUZU Cagayan de Oro Dealer principals and Board of Directors with Isuzu Philippines Corp executives Daisuke Inaba, Art Balmadrid, Takashi Tomita, Nobuo Izumina, Francisco Rolida, Dr. Jerome Young and George Ongchua, and Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno. Ang “HULAGWAY” sa Pagbantog – HIV and AIDS By Arlyn May Baqui – Bongay, Pagbantog Kagayan
“Hulagway”, is now not only a local word for face, imagery, or scenery. It will also be one of the landmark sub-projects of Pagbantog Kagay-an’s recent advocacy, Pagbantog-HIV. “Buntugon ta ang HIV” is Pagbantog Kagay-an’s hopeful battlecry against the rising number of HIV and AIDS. This is a joint effort with Project Oxygen, an HIV& AIDS support group that propagates yoga as an Art of Living and healthy lifestyle contra HIV & AIDS. Two teams come together as one, aptly named, PagbantogHIV, a movement that not only aims to promote awareness of HIV& AIDS to men and women of all ages. It also means to artfully dictate the taboos surrounding HIV& AIDS that have long been shrugged off or snobbed by the locals of Mindanao. The photo exhibit “HULAGWAY” was conceptualized to break through inhibitions of the mind. The photo exhibit may not necessarily be exposing positives listed in the HIV & AIDS statistics but it will involve three categories of advocates. These are Professionals,

Artists, and Pageant/Celebrities, accordingly voicing out their support for the campaign against HIV/AIDS through the photographic visions of Glenn Palacio, Ed Abella and Jessie Villegas. Maquillage will be in the care of Dandy Roa and styling by Seven Qu, all of whom are some of the artistadvocates of Pagbantog-HIV. “We are inviting professionals, artists and celebrities to join HULAGWAY and speak out for the campaign. Your small effort to reach out will be visible if not globally right now then at least nationally and locally, directed to everyone who CAN BE infected and who already ARE suffering. With a minimum donation of Php 200, you will be styled, made up and photographed to your story that answers the question ‘What is your advocacy for HIV/AIDS?’. While your proceeds will help fund Project Oxygen, your photos will be exhibited during the Pagbantog-HIV activity day set on Decemeber 1, 2013,” says a representative of the Pagbantog Kagay-an. Cagayan de Oro City, capital of Mindanao, is about to be painted red with a whole-day advocacy programme come
December 1, 2013. A solidarity parade is set to kick off the mood in the morning, aligned with an opening ceremony and the unveiling of the “HULAGWAY” photo exhibit at the Limketkai Rotunda, Limketkai Mall. Among the many highlights of the day would be the launching of Project Oxygen, a free concert, and a closing salvo tailored with music and monologues that would leave a lasting impression only expected from Pagbantog Kagay-an. Pagbantog Kagay-an is a freelance, nonprofit group, collectively Kagay-anons. It was born from the recent tragedy that shook Kagay-anons last July 27, 2013. Sam Tan, originator of Pagbantog Kagayan, quickly sought the help of friends established and active in media and local show business. The small round-up expanded into a network of artists and professionals willing to help send out a message against the July 2013 bombing. From there, Pagbantog Kagayan, now a bigger team, is set to continually use its manpower of talents and skills to espouse and disseminate socially responsible concepts.

Broken Everyday Treasures Christmas F
T
he quake that rocked most of the Philippines last October 15 is one for the books. Not because of the many lives that it took away but the cultural treasures it has toppled to pieces. Centuries old churches and even natural wonders like the Chocolate hills succumbed to the great magnitude of the earthquake. It took only less than sixty seconds to almost obliterate famous churches in Bohol and also threaten famed landmark like the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño in Cebu. The sights we see on our newsfeeds of the devastation are so heartbreaking and all we can do is send a silent prayer to the people who are affected. Maybe it was a good thing that it happened on a weekday and a special non-working holiday too or the death toll could have been worse. I can just imagine the panic it would have caused if it happened on a weekend and all those churches are packed with churchgoers. These architectural wonders beautifully built by our forefathers and are a reminder of the colorful and somehow tumultuous past of our country. They have withstood countless other calamities and have silently witnessed history as it unfolded throughout time but sadly, all we
see now are defeated façades of their once mighty and awe-inspiring images. It is truly saddening to know that these famous churches might never be restored again however, like in any other tragedy that we all have experienced I have confidence that we Filipinos will rise above this catastrophe and heal once more. These broken treasures of Bohol are somehow a reminder that we should not forsake the cultural and historical landmarks that we have been proud of for years. Let us revisit all the other remaining iconic sites that we have and see to it that we do something to protect them for the years to come. If we intend to continue to showcase our heritage to future generations then now is perhaps the right time to look for ways to truly preserve them. I have yet to find out what we can do as ordinary people to help out in restoring those that are still standing. If it takes for us to shell out some of our extra funds then I hope we share what we can. Let us not wait for another tragedy of this nature to find the value and importance handed down by the generations before us. Someday, we will be grateful that we have done what we could now.
ew days ago while I was meeting a friend at a mall, she suddenly said in the midst of our conversation “Christmas songs”. We just paused and smiled to each other and I said to her yeah... “Christmas is here”. Even though I was tired that day hearing Christmas carols softly playing made me relaxed somehow. When September kicks in and it gets nearer to December, everyone’s mood is affected somehow or something inside us is stirred and we just shift to the loving season mode. So how I wish its Christmas every day... because we tend to be more reflective, more compassionate, more giving in this season. Well if you come to think of it the very essence of Christmas is Jesus. If not for his birth there will be no saviour. His coming is a reminder of God’s love despite man’s wickedness. If we truly believe that He is our saviour then it isn’t just but right that we live in everyday gratitude that He came to save us. The Christmas trees, trimmings and gifts just add
colors to the season and somehow reminds us to celebrate but even without it we should always be reminded for the real reason not just for the season but whole year through. Even in this time of grief because of the earthquake many lives again were lost and historical infrastructures destroyed but, we are never without hope because Jesus lives in us.

The Basics of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections I
n one’s lifetime, I believe most of us must have had the unfortunate experience of having that most difficult hard and so dry cough, that it kind of embarrasses us, particularly if we are in a crowd! Yes, an upper respiratory tract infection can present as a dry cough (which is so bothersome that it disturbs even the most basic of needs, which is sleeping), and in all likelihood, accompanied with hoarseness. Other symptoms include sneezing and a runny nose, nasal congestion, difficulty in swallowing and even breathing. Fever and that general feeling of weakness and tiredness. It is not uncommon also for patients to complain of diarrhea, body aches, nausea and vomiting. An URTI , is one of the most common reasons for those Out Patient visits , as well as being absent from school or work. The infection can affect anywhere from the sinuses, the nasal passages, pharynx, larynx. Air that one breathes in from the outside passes through these passages on its way to the trachea and eventually to the lungs. Thus, the infection may even be specific like if it is the sinuses, then it is called as sinusitis. The incubation period, meaning the time as to manifesting the disease after exposure to a person with the illness, actually depends

on the infecting micro-organism. In most cases, URTI is caused by a virus, and it may take 1-5 days before one gets to present with the disease. If it is bacterial, depending also on the type of bacteria, the incubation period varies from 1 – 10 days. URTI can affect anyone, anytime of the day or year. But this is more common when the humidity is high. Persons who are more at risk of developing an URTI are those with close physical contact with affected individuals, and those living in closed and crowded quarters like nursing homes, prisons, and even in

evacuation centres. Patients who are immune-compromised like Diabetics, or those with the Big C, and those exposed to smoking are likewise more prone to develop an URTI. Although the illness in most cases are self limiting, meaning, it resolves on its own, and it can last only from3 – 14 days, and requires no hospitalization, there are certain instances where the patient may need to be admitted for management. When the symptoms last for more than 2 weeks, or when the URTI is recurring, or, when there is difficulty of breathing, then, it is to the best interest of the patient to be hospitalized. Rest and plenty of f luid intake are the mainstay of treatment in uncomplicated URTI cases. Simple measures that may be considered as helpful when aff licted with URTI: steaming in order to loosen up the mucus, having adequate hydration through water intake. The use of salt water gurgles, lozenges and sleeping in a semi-upright position can help one through the episode. Antibiotics should be used when indicated only and not routinely. Hand-washing and the covering of one’s mouth when sneezing or coughing, are simple yet life saving measures, that, we each can easily do in order to contain the microorganisms, preventing their further spread....
