Briefly Stronger fisheries PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Tuesday said he expects to see a stronger fisheries sector in the Philippines with the help of Indonesia. Marcos said this would be the immediate benefit arising from the two nations' signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation in th e Developm ent an d Promotion of the Creative Economy. The deal, Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said, “cultivates a common creative economy that leverages on our respective strengths to foster innovation through knowledge transfer in industries, including fashion, architecture, digital media, performing arts, music, theater, dance, and creative services.”

Japan builds schools THE community of Bayanga Norte Elementary School in Matanog, Maguindanao can now benefit from the relocation and construction of two new school buildings worth P8.9 million funded through the Japanese government’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Secur ity Projects (GGP). Consul General Ishikawa Yoshihisa of the ConsulateGeneral of Japan in Davao and First Secretary Okada Fumikai of the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines led the turnover of two buildings with seven classrooms to Bayanga Norte Elementary School that will allow more students to study in a safe environment without spending long hours of travel just to go to school. Matanog Municipal Mayor Zohriah Bansil-Guro, other local government officials (LGU) officials, Department of Education officials, teachers, selected students, and parents witnessed the event held on Aug. 31.

Tampakan still not yet into open-pit mining THE report that the controversial Tampakan copper-gold project in South Cotabato has commenced commercial production using the open-pit mining method is false. Engr. Siegfred Flaviano, Provincial Environment Management Office (PEMO) chief, said that Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI), operator of the Tampakan project, has

Smuggled cigars ZAMBOANGA City – Authorities have arrested four persons and seized some P3.2 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in two separate anti-smuggling operations in Sulu and this city, a top police official said Monday.

Col. Richard Verceles, operations chief of the Area Police Command-Wester n Mindanao, said no one was arrested on the first confiscation of smuggled cigarettes around 5:15 p.m. Sunday at the port in Barangay Buansa in Indanan town, Sulu province.

Verceles said policemen from Indanan Municipal Police Station rushed to the port in Barangay Buansa upon receiving information on the presence of smuggled cigarettes.
