Social benefits A LOCAL legislator in Cagayan de Oro City slammed the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) for being ‘unaware’ of the ordinance that specifically provides burial benefits to veterans. Councilor Romeo Calizo, who is also a retired Army major general, said in his special report in the city council’s session on Monday, May 29 that 11 veterans died over the past three weeks, and their immediate families went to his office for assistance. The families were instructed to proceed to the CSWDO here for the burial benefits, but the office's alleged typical responses were "There is no such ordinance like that" and "We don’t know about that."
Scammers get life sentence THE Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)-Davao reported Monday that leaders of the Tagum City-based Rigen Wellness Product Marketing have been sentenced to life imprisonment for syndicated estafa. The Tagum City Regional Trial Court Branch 2 c o nv i c te d R i c o J o h n Colorines Garcia and King Paul Bryan Auditor, chief executive officer and auditor of Rigen Marketing, respectively, for syndicated estafa in two criminal cases dated April 11 and May 2. Garcia and Auditor were sentenced to life imprisonment in both cases, alongside payment of actual damages totaling P2 million and moral damages amounting to P120,000 with an interest of 6 percent per annum.

HE World Bank has approve d a $100 million agriculture development project to help boost the livelihood of farmers and fisherfolk in indigenous cultural communities in the southern Philippines. In a statement over the weekend, World Bank said the Mindanao Inclusive Agriculture Development Project (MIADP) is expected to benefit around 120,000 farmers and fisherfolk in selected ancestral domains in Mindanao. T he proj e c t w i l l b e implemented by the Department of Agriculture (DA), along with i mpl ement i ng p ar t ners that include the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP). DOT-10 regional director Marie Elaine Unchuan on Sunday led the launching of
northern Mindanao's first-ever bike tour dubbed "Camiguin Isle Bike Tour," a 64-kilometer race around the island. "We want to convert not just as sports enthusiasts but as tourists. This is the purpose of our bike event and our Bike NorthMin; we also want our riders, aside from having fun and being healthy, to be tourists and to help our economy," Unchuan said. AN estimated 2,000 residents of Marogong in Lanao del Sur fled their homes on Saturday, fearing their town would be attacked by the Islamic Stateinspired Dawlah Islamiyah in retaliation for the arrest of four of its members last Friday. Environmentalists here hope the High Court would exercise its “wisdom as it has in previous and even in environmental cases” when it decides on the petition for “continuing mandamus and prohibition” with an application for TRO.
