he Provincial Nutrition Committee (PNC) chaired by Honorable Yevgeny Vicente B. Emano, Provincial Governor is leading the promotion of the 10 New Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF) in the Province of Misamis Oriental. The 10 messages being promoted in the new NGF are simple statements that give advice on the consumption of foods and food components for which there are public health concerns. In 2012, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRIDOST) initiated the revision of the NGF to keep up with the changes in the nutrition situation in the country as well as new information on nutrition and related interventions to address nutrition related health problems. These 10 messages which Governor Emano personally recited together with the Provincial Nutrition Committee (PNC) in a simple but momentous gathering at the Provincial Governors Conference Room last October 14, 2013, are as follows: 1. Eat a variety of foods everyday to get the nutrients needed by the body. 2. Breastfeed infants exclusively from birth up to 6 months then give appropriate complementary foods while continuing breastfeeding for 2 years and beyond for optimum growth and development. 3. Eat more vegetables and fruits everyday to get the essential vitamins, minerals and fiber for regulation of body processes. 4. Consume fish, lean meat, poultry, egg, dried beans or nuts daily for growth and repair of body tissues. 5. Consume milk, milk products and other calcium-rich foods, such as small fish and shellfish, everyday for healthy bones and teeth. 6. Consume safe foods and water to prevent diarrhea and other food and water-borne diseases. 7. Use iodized salt to prevent Iodine Deficiency Disorders. 8. Limit intake of salty, fried, fatty and sugar-rich foods to prevent cardiovascular diseases. 9. Attain normal body weight through proper diet and moderate physical activity to prevent obesity and maintain good health 10. Be physically active, make healthy food choices, manage stress, avoid alcoholic beverage and do not smoke to help prevent lifestylerelated non-communicable diseases

In support to the attainment of the millennium development goal #1 by 2015 (target is moved to 2016), the National Nutrition Council Region X through its Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) X is leading in the promotion of 10 NGF in the Region by way of spreading and introducing the messages to partners through our Local Nutrition Committees. Exciting promotional events and activities region wide has been lined up this 2013 and in the coming years as part of the nationwide NGF Promotion and campaign designed to create awareness and promote behavior change in dietary practice of our general public. The goal of the wide dissemination of the 10 NGF is to improve the region’s nutritional status as these impacts on productivity and quality of life of our population, through adoption of desirable dietary practices and healthy lifestyle. Governor Bambi Emano in the same vein has committed to end hunger and malnutrition in the province tapping the full support of its Provincial/ City/Municipal/Barangay Nutrition Committees (P/C/M/BNCs). “This day is a very good take off point for the
PNC of Misamis Oriental under the leadership of Gov. Bambi Emano in our journey to end hunger and malnutrition in the province. The pledge to end hunger and malnutrition is a nationwide advocacy of our national government. The LGU effort becomes more strategic efficient and effective if the governor himself personally commits to lead in cascading this advocacy campaign down to its municipal and barangay levels. We are excited that the governor himself is strongly advocating the promotion of the New Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos” Tondares concludes. “Food is a basic human need and is a right. The continuing problem of hunger and malnutrition deprives people of their basic human right and this is morally unacceptable.” The National Nutrition Council strongly advocates that Investing in Nutrition is Good Governance. The manual on the Guide for Local Chief Executives in Solving Hunger and Malnutrition highlights this advocacy. In region X, a number of LGUs has heeded to this call as evidence by increased LGU investing in Nutrition.

MISAMIS Oriental Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano sworn in Vice Mayor Leonardo Uy Jr. as mayor of Libertad town Misamis Oriental on November 4, 2013 at provincial capitol. Uy replaced Mayor Mario M. Jagus who died of cardiac arrest on October 29 at Iligan City. Uy vowed to continue what the late mayor has started. He said he will continue the unfinished project of the late mayor with the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR). He also planned to fully implement the cleanliness and orderliness drive in Libertad market as this is one of the programs the previous mayor wanted to prioritize. Villar shoulders repatriation of 71-year-old OFW

ENATOR Cynthia Villar vowed to help in the repatriation of undocumented Filipino workers facing arrest and detention over the renewed Saudi government crackdown on illegal foreign migrants as she personally met on November 6 the four distressed OFWs, including a 71-year-old illegally-staying worker, upon their arrival in the country from Saudi Arabia. The distressed OFWs, who came from Jeddah and Riyadh, arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) 1 from Abu Dahbi at 3:15 p.m. via Etihad Airways, Flight No. EY 424. The Villar Foundation, paid for their plane tickets. Mrs. Villar said helping OFWs has been a part of her advocacy and personal commitment. “No PDAF is involved here, ... this is my own modest, personal initiative in

Unable to come home due to his spinal ailment was 53-year old Diego Mag-atas, Sr, who has been estranged from his family for more than 20 years. Mag-atas was hoping to leave yesterday on the same flight but was prevented from doing so because he lacked a medical certificate showing that he is fit to travel. The OFW suffered a rare disease that led to a weakness in his spinal column. The Philippine Consulate’s Assistance-to-Nationals Section also failed to provide Mr. Mag-atas with a
copy of his e-ticket, the ticket that was purchased by the Villar Foundation. “I am appealing to our Philippine Consulate in Jeddah to fast-track the repatriation of Diego Magatas. The Villar Foundation has already provided a ticket for him but the airport authorities required a medical certificate to show that he is indeed fit to travel considering his illness. Mang Diego badly wants to be with his family. He has not seen them for 20 years, and they are also longing to see him come home,” she said. congress to improve the livelihood of their constituents. If they really have the right thinking they can help their town better than just converting it into a city. At any rate, I always blame the electorates for voting the wrong candidates. But there is nothing they can do because in the very beginning, their votes have been fully paid via vote buying by these candidates. This system has been part of our culture and nothing can stop this anymore. To many it is part of our lifestyle which no one can dismantle. It is a way of life that people have loved so much. Too many cities in Philippines
Sponsoring and filing a bill in congress to convert a town into a city must be the easiest way to do as a lawmaker. What a congressman does to pursue his bill is to read some sort of history of the place, the number of inhabitants, the area and location of the subject town and the probable taxes it can derive once it becomes a city. It is simple and the beauty is nobody would argue or oppose it since the issue is local and, therefore, nobody has knowledge about which can be basis for opposing it. In a short period of time congress will approve the matter and certainly a place would become a city. No debates. I am saying this because I noticed so many cities now existing anywhere. From Luzon, the Visayas and in Mindanao there were places I knew to have just one highway and populated by not so

P10 million allocated to improve garlic yield of Ilocos Norte farmers, says Villar SENATOR Cynthia A. Villar yesterday said the Committee on Agriculture and Food which she chairs, was able to help garlic growers to secure P10 million to fund a research undertaking that will improve production of the famous “Ilocos garlic.” “The hearing was able to resolve a lot of problems suffered by our garlic growers. One of these is funding to improve garlic seedlings so that our variety will be more competitive,” Villar said after the hearing held in Batac, Ilocos Norte yesterday. During the hearing, Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala gave the commitment that he will approve the initial funding of P10 million requested by the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU).

at Batac Public Market, Villar learned from Magdalena Domanais, 49, one of the vendors, that a kilo of locally grown garlic sells at P200 while imported garlic sells at P80 a kilo. “We are hopeful further R&D will be able to make Ilocos garlic more competitive by cutting its production cost and by boosting its marketing as the better garlic than those imported from China,” she said. Villar also said that Ilocos Norte farmers will now have a voice in the matter of importation by opening five membership slots for them in the National Garlic Action Team (NGAT). “It is only fair that farmers who produce almost 70 percent of the country’s entire garlic production will be represented in this
body,” she added. It was Sen. Ferdinand “Bong Bong” Marcos Jr., who questioned the incongruity in the 34-member NGAT. This prompted Alcala to open up five slots for garlic growers in Ilocos Norte. During the hearing, Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos enumerated the problems besetting garlic growers in the province, among them is the lack of infrastructure support and the need to adjust the planting calendar to adapt to the changing climate. The governor asked the DA to study feasibility of planting crops that take shorter time to grow like kangkong, sitaw, mongo in areas usually devastated by typhoons. CAGAYAN de Oro City––Mayor Oscar Moreno has designated Vice Mayor Caesar Ian Acenas as Officer In Charge (OIC) of the city effective noon yesterday (November 4) until the evening of November 6, when the former returns from his trip to Fukuoka, Japan. Mayor Moreno has been invited by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific to attend the Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on November 5 to 6, 2013, in Fukuoka, Japan. In the letter of invitation to Mayor Moreno, Yoshinobu Fukasawa, director of UN-Habitat, Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, said the objective of the EGM is to enhance sustainable regional development in Asia and the Pacific region through technical cooperation from Japan. Reposar fell into the category of overstaying and undocumented foreign workers after losing his job at the Saudi National Printing Press where he worked with proper documentation from 1980 until it declared bankruptcy in 2003. He then moved to another printing company without the necessary documents. The three other OFWs who were finally reunited with their families are Farida Kasan Giang, 38, who was underpaid and overworked, attending to her job as DH from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m., Lyn Tulod Verano, who was physically and verbally abused by her employer. She left with unpaid salary for 6 months, and Mariam Sapii who had stayed with different employers since she arrived in Riyadh on June 5, 2005. Her last employer where she stayed for 8 months required her to clean the whole house, which she described as a “mansion”. She worked from 6 am to 11 pm with only meals as her rest. The “harrowing ordeals” of these OFWS, Villar said, should serve as a stern reminder for the government to focus on job creation in the same way the Saudi government is doing its best to provide jobs for their nationals. “We need to help thousands of our repatriated OFWs to get back to their feet and move forward, hopefully without going back to the Middle East to work,” said Mrs. Villar. “I also appeal to the private sector to do its share to help our OFWs in Saudi Arabia during these extraordinary times,” she said, while adding that the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Labor and Employment must open its doors to Good Samaritans who wish to help our OFWs come home. “Hindi dapat solohin ng pamahalaan ang problema.
