Customs-Normin seizes P15M worth of fireworks from China By GERRY LEE GORIT Correspondent
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Imported fireworks estimated to be worth P15 million from China were confiscated by the Bureau of Customs at the Mindanao Container Terminal subport in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental recently, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) chief Alvin Y. Enciso said Wednesday. The seizure came in as new BOC-10 District Collector Tomas Alcid assumed into office yesterday. Alcid replaced Ruby Claudia Alameda, who was transferred to the Manila International Container Port, during a turn-over ceremony at the BOC-10 district office Wednesday morning. Alcid used to be assigned at the Customs Monitoring Unit of the BOC central office in Manila. Enciso said they put the cargoes on hold upon the advice of the Command Center of the Office
of Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon and the BOC Risk Management Office who were tipped off of the contraband. He said the fireworks were misdeclared as toys, glassware and houseware. The Philippine National Police’s Firearms and Explosive Office also certified that the importer did not secure any clearance to import fireworks from them, nor it has the permit to sell and distribute the pyrotechnics. “There was really an intention to smuggle the fireworks by way of the MCT,” Enciso told this reporter Wednesday afternoon. Another container van filled with toys with estimated worth of P1.8 million was also held since the broker did not present any permit from the Food and Drug Administration that would indicate the items were checked for content of lead and other toxic materials. “Importation of toys without any certificate of Outgoing Bureau of Customs-10 District Collector Ruby Claudia Alameda (left) turns over the BOC official flag to See fireworks, page A7
