Two women kidnapped in Iligan rescued THE military has rescued two women and arrested their two abductors 30 minutes after they were seized in Iligan City, military officials announced Saturday. Promptly rescued were Kathlyn Jane Dapol and Jingle Bation Rebosora, both married, according to Army’s 1st Infantry Division spokesman Capt. Jefferson Somera. Somera said the victim already rejoined with their respective families while the suspects, identified as Mark Rebosora, 28, and Rogelio Bation, 60 years old, were detained. It was not immediately known whether the suspects were related to one of the two victims. They were turned over to the custody of the police. Somera said the victims were walking along the side of the road when the suspects arrived and dragged them into a four-wheel vehicle around 10:30 a.m. Friday in Barangay San Miguel, Iligan City. Somera said that Lt. Col. Danilo Ibon, commander of the 4th Mechanized Battalion, upon receipt of report about the incident ordered his troops to set up checkpoints. Fast processing and releasing of the financial assistance for victims of fire and other calamities desired during the meeting with Social Services committe chaired by Councilor Eric Salcedo and City Social Welfare Office thru Ms. Nida Pana. The newly-elected councilor expressed his eagerness to become an instrument for the fast delivery of social services to constituents of the city. He said he will visit all charity institutions in the city to personally look on the actual situation of the residents of institutions such as the Tahanan ng Kabataan, the Boystown in Lumbia and the Social Development Center. For his part, Councilor Leon Gan, member of the committee pushed for the establishment of a time frame and appealed for the cooperation of all offices involved even in the issuance of the certificates of the

availability of funds by the Local Finance Committee. In another development, Ms. Marissa Tagarda, Officer-in- Charge of the Community Improvement Office, stressed the urgency of reorganizing the Committee on City College Scholarship Program to address the concerns of the 600 scholars, especially those who are graduating this school year. The CID in-charge also briefed the committee on the operation of the Oro Youth Center at City Hall that addresses the concerns of the in and out of school youth. She said counseling and other programs that help the youth with their family/relationship problems are offered at the center. Councilor Salcedo suggested that the center also considers programs and activities that would solve drug addiction among the youth. (ELB)

Former Finance Secretary Roberto de Ocampois new PVB Chair

Former Finance Secretary Roberto or “Bobby” F. de Ocampo, OBE has been elected as Chairman by the Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) Board of Directors. former Secretary of Finance, he was also President of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) and also the Chairman & CEO of the Development Bank of the Philippines . Fiji calls for urgent intl action on climate change

UVA––Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama Wednesday called for urgent international action to address climate change, saying global warming was having a “dire effect” on Pacific nations through rising sea levels and extreme weather events.

While opening a meeting of pacific island developing states in the Fijian resort town of Nadi, Bainimarama said the Pacific nations expected the industrialized world to finally face up to its responsibilities. “Let me say this to the big polluters -- the big carbon emitters: Whatever the science of climate change, it is you who must respond to global warming, which threatens the very existence of some of our small island developing states,” he said. “You need -- for our sakes -- to set targets to curb your carbon emissions. Because the majority scientific opinion has it that you are causing global warming.” Bainimarama said it is unacceptable that the industrialized nations were still unwilling to set binding targets on their emissions of carbon dioxide, which most climate scientists are blaming for rising temperatures. “It is not good enough to say ‘it is all too hard’ to put the protection of your own carbon-emitting industries first. The more reasons you have in life for doing what you have to, the more courage you can muster and the more motivated you will be in pursuing them to completion. HIV/AIDS: Some footnotes

THE human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), is one illness that has a greater impact in terms of healthcare and economics, than the other sexually transmitted infections. This being a chronic illness, the patient may live for a long time , and more importantly, he/she can infect another person in more ways than the usual. The disease itself may not kill the affected person, but, the complications that can arise from the immune deficiency can make life not so good for them. The virus belongs to the retrovirus family and it kills the cells responsible for defending one’s body

Which in turn makes the person more susceptible to certain opportunistic infections. common leading cause of death. What makes it worse is the fact that the TB in these cases are Multi-Drug Resistant, making treatment more difficult. Patients with HIV/AIDS are also prone to developing certain types of Cancer. I have seen one case during my Residency Training wherein the patient came in for skin lesions. It is quite notable that these patients during interview and history tak-

ing, tend not to divulge information related to their sexual behaviour. It was only upon doing the tissue biopsy that we were able to diagnose Kaposi’s sarcoma, which is a type of cancer involving the walls of the blood vessels. Another malignancy seen among HIV/AIDS patients is Lymphoma, which is actually a Big C involving the white blood cells of the patient. Patients with HIV/AIDS may not manifest anything and, this asymptomatic phase may even last up to 10 years! Making those affected with the illness live as near normal lives, with quality living, and making them responsible citizens, by ensuring that the virus is not shared to another individual is one huge leap towards containment of the disease.

Power body proposes uprating of Agus plant

is in addition to the Agus 6 Units 1 and 2 uprating approved last year by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board. “This proposal forms pa r t of t he immed iate measures being pursued by the Aquino government to increase the dependable c apacit y of M i nd a nao p ow e r g e n e r a t i o n ,” Antonino said, adding that “it has been submitted for approval.” According to National Power Corp (Napocor) Mindanao, the proposed uprating of Agus 6 Unit 4 is expected to improve the plant’s generating capacity by 15 megawatts, from its available capacity of 35 to 50 megawatts. The uprating

project is estimated to cost P495 million. State-run Power Sector A s s e t s a nd L iabi l it ie s Management Corp (PSALM) is finalizing the bidding schedule for the P2.6 billion Agus 6 Units 1 and 2 uprating, which is set to commence by the third quarter. The Agus 6 Units 1 and 2 uprating project seeks to extend the generating plant’s economic life for a not her 3 0 ye a r s a nd increase its output from 50 megawatts to 69 megawatts. The project will take 30 months and is expected to be completed by 2016. “Among the measures being pushed under MPMC, enhancing the dependable capacity of Agus 6 provides the most viable option for opt i m i z i ng M i nd a nao g e n e r a t i o n’s h y d r o capacities,” Antonino said. City Councilor Roger Abaday, chair of the City’s Committee on Public Utility, felt slighted when the representatives of the MicroTrade firm did a “no-show” of the committee invitation on Wednesday. He said that the committee meeting was the first formal meeting that would supposedly look into the legality of awarding of the traffic light project since the two previous biddings called by the previous administration reportedly failed. “We were upset with the failure of the contractor to honor the committee invitation,” Abaday said.

She said that the task force is doing its best to come up a right venue adding that the Moreno administration also respects the right of the vendors. Gan, however, said that a radio announcement was not enough because the

proper thing to do was to publish the Executive Order in local newspapers and that the vendors should have been provided the original copy of the order prior to the suspension. Gan urged the Committee on Enterprises to file a resolution with the City Council that would restore the Nite Café at the Plaza Divisoria while there’s no final decision and final venue on where the Nite Cafe would be transferred. City Councilor Dometilo C. Acenas Jr., Chair of the Committee on Economic Enterprises, said that a consultation should have been conducted before the implementation of the program. Tennis star Sharapova splits from coach MOSCOW – Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova said Friday she has parted ways with her coach, seen by many as the architect of her resurgence in recent years. Thomas Hogstedt joined Sharapova’s staff in 2010 with the Russian ranked 18th following surgery, and became her head coach a year later. Since then, she has won last year’s French Open and reached two more Grand Slam finals, as well as an Olympic final. “After almost three years of working together, Thomas Hogstedt and I decided to part ways,” Sharapova said

on her website. “Due to personal issues, he was not able to travel in the near future and we both agreed it was the right time to move our separate ways. I am very thankful for all his work, and wish him much success in the future.” Sharapova will announce Hogstedt’s replacement “in a few days” she said, adding she was “very excited.” Sharapova is ranked second in the world behind Serena Williams following a disappointing secondround exit at Wimbledon last month. THE Kagayhaan Canine Club and Circle Productions Inc., sets the first ever Mayor Oca Moreno Fun Run to kick-off the August festivities. T he f u n r u n , apt ly dubbed as “Dagan sa Kahapsay Kagay-an,” is all set for August 4, at the Kiosko Kagawasan, Divisoria, this city. The 1st Mayor Oca Moreno Fun Run is initiated by the officers and members of the Kagayhaan Canine Club (KCC) in their desire to help the new city administration’s thrust for change. Edgardo Palad, president of KCC, said that in one of their meetings, they asked themselves the question: “What can we do to help Mayor Oca Moreno and the new city administration bring about the much needed, desired, long-overdue and prayed for ‘kahapsay’ to our beloved city?” This question springs out the answer that led them into action. Hence, the conceptualization of the “Dagan sa Ka-

hapsay Kagay-an” fun run. KCC Project Chairman Kenneth Tan said the club’s mission as a group of doglovers is to promote the proper care and well-being of canine friends. Furthermore, proceeds will be used for “the establishment and maintenance of the city’s dog pound service and canine vaccination,” said Tan. Tan disclosed that the original plan was a fun run together with their pet dogs, but after a series of consultations, Circle Productions ruled out the possibility as this may agitate dogs during the actual run and might cause trouble and discourage other runners. Tan also said that if time and weather would permit, a short ceremonial walk or run within the Divisoria area before the actual run will be done. City Veterinarian Dr. Perla D. Asis said that the state and condition of the city dog pound ser vice is currently at its worst, even as she said that there

are 10k, 5k, and 3k runs with gun starts at 5:30am, 5:45am, and 6:00am, respectively. Circle Pro duc tions, Inc. race director Francis Velasquez said the Start and Finish lines will be at the Kiosko Kagawasan, Divisoria, this city. The 10k category will have its turning point at the Bulua Junction Road while the 5k will have its point near Pan de Pugon, Kauswagan Highway. The 3k category will have its turning point in the middle of the Maharlika (Marcos) Bridge. Ang said the registration fees are as follows: PHP 500 for the 10k, PHP 400 for the 5k and PHP 300 for the 3k runs – all inclusive of race bibs and t-shirts.
