Phase out of old PUVs start soon

AGAYAN de Oro City--Starting end of October this year, old passenger jitneys, taxis, vans and buses used for public transport in Northern Mindanao would be phased out, the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said on Thursday.

NorMin’s economy up by 7.4% By Mike Baños

NORTHERN Mindanao’s economy registered a 7.4 percent growth in 2012, higher that the 5.8 percent growth recorded during the previous year, the National Statistical Coordination Board said on Thursday. Northern Mindanao even ranked eighth in terms economic growth in 2012 among the 17 regions in the country, Officer-incharge Brenda Lynn Castro said. “The regional economic growth spurred in 2012 as industry and services posted higher growths as compared to the previous year,” Castro added. She said that the services sector of Northern Mindanao accounted for the biggest share of the region’s economy at 41.8 percent share. Castro said that Northern Mindanao grew at a faster pace in 2012 by 9.0 percent compared to its 4.6 percent growth in 2011. In a press briefing, Castro also said that the industry sector helped a lot in the economic performance in the regional economies. “The industry sectors accounting 33.4 percent of the region’s economy, expanded by 9.2 percent in 2012 from 6.7 percent in 2011,” said Castro. Hataman enforces prudent fiscal policy in ARMM

MARAWI City--The administration of Governor Mujiv Hataman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) will be instituting fiscal prudence among agencies and offices in the regional bureaucracy as means to advance necessary reforms. In a conference with the local media, ARMM Executive Secretary Laisa Alamia said a memorandum has been issued by the ARMM Governor that sets up a system on procedural flowchart to safeguard financial transactions of the regional government and its attached line agencies. She said the streamlined scheme will help curb anomalies and dubious transactions while, at the same time, provide means to gauge the performance of every agency or office. The scheme, she said,

Cebu Pacific launches bigger Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge for university students

Bigger prizes and more exciting adventures await young explorers in the Cebu Pacific Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge, now on its second year. Gamba Artsada features CdeO culture, arts in LKK By Elaine O. Ratunil The City of Golden Friendship will host an art exhibition of the Artsada team of artists on July 22 to 28, 2013, at LimKetKai Mall, Lapasan, this city. Gamba Artsada is intended to help promote Cagayan de Oro as a place of unique culture, heritage and visual arts, said Marigold Cherie RamosGarrido, Artsada artist. She said it will display oeuvres of the Artsada artists, showcasing the city’s rich heritage and culture in recognition of the Kagay-anon cultural heritage, history, natural wonders, values and socio-cultural and economic aspirations. The team members are composed of “tubong Cagay-anon” promising artists. Some of them won in the various regional and national art competitions. The exhibit is also supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Visual Arts Committee, as part of their off-shoot activities in promoting local arts and also R Productions for promotions. NCCA now accepting project proposals for 2014 DAVAO C IT Y — T h e Nat iona l C ommission for Culture and the Arts (NC CA) is calling on cultural and art groups, individual artists, nongovernment organizations, local government units and academic institutions to submit project proposals for the 2014 NCCA Grants program. Deadline for submission is on August 30. Marlene Ruth Sanchez, NCCA deputy director, said during the “Salabat at Sining” press conference at the Philippine Information Agency-11 Friday that proposals should be in line with the theme “Filipino

culture as the wellspring of national and global well-being.” The theme is decided annually by the 19 committees of the NCCA based on the identified priority needs of the sector. “Projects must establish culture as pillar of sustainable development, advance creativity and diversity of artistic expression, and promote a strong sense of nationhood and pride in being Filipino through culture and arts,” Sanchez said in calling for project proposals. Grace Reytes, NCCA project development officer and cultural dis-

semination chief, said that they received at least 1,000 proposals last year but approved only about 450. “The problem is some proposals are not geared towards the priority set by the committee,” she added. Proposals should be submitted at their na-

Make corruption a capital offense CORRUPTION in the Philippines is so rampant it is happening nearly every moment of one’s life. It is taking place in so many government offices, in congress, in public work projects, nearly everywhere. The country ranks high according to foreign observers and yet the government is just silent and not doing anything about it. Because of this catastrophe, the country is dwindling. We cannot lift a bit because our money is tied to the corrupt people. So many of our government workers and executives are wealthy people. They have mansions in exclusive villages and private areas. They have properties nearly everywhere including in foreign lands and many of which not registered in their names. They have flashy cars, resorts, vacation homes and a lot of them make frequent trips to cities in

The government is aware about it but is helpless to run after its cronies, its relatives and political supporters. We are just helpless in this regard the reason why corruption thrives freely, smoothly and constantly. It is high time something is done. The general public should march forward and denounce this great monster in our society. Our politicians should be thought of the effects of corruption in the general appearance of Philippine society.

We should express our indignation over the government’s inaction and exhaust all our efforts to bring justice to the country. We must change our attitude and behavior and reform the ugly appearance of our country so foreigners will respect us better. We must make corruption a capital offense and restore the death penalty. Corrupt people must die either by hanging or before a firing squad. Whatever way, they should be eliminated and get rid of the terrible effects of their stupidity. The country must change its approach and appre-

ciation of criminality. We must destroy the network of corruption because our country has suffered so much. It is a shame we are lagging behind among Asian countries when we used to be on the top of them all. Execute the corrupt government employees and their accomplices. By doing this, I can see the country will wallow in wealth, beautiful and a lot of people employed by so many private and government firms around. What interests me more are the reactions of several merons castigating the Dutch national for his supposed act of interfering in local affairs? I can’t understand such reaction because it has been the official policy of this country to always let foreigners interfere with domestic concerns.

Just think of this. When it comes to training our local soldiers to make them more effective in their duty as such, we look up to America to give our soldiers the necessary training. That is what the periodic military exercise with the American soldiers called Balikatan is all about my friends. In our dream of becoming an economic giant, we not only look up to the foreigners to do this for us. We are even willing to amend provisions of our Constitution just so these foreigners can have equal rights with all of us in owning land here, in exploiting our natural and mineral resources also. But did we hear a collective whimper from our people about this proposed travesty of our rights guaranteed by the Constitution? We even imagine, this is actually how we were shaped to think by foreign allies together with their tutas among our elective and appointive officials, that the economic uplift

of the country can only be had by having foreign direct investments falling on our country like manna from heaven. This is the reason why we are figuratively opening the nation’s legs so that foreigners can freely rape it unhampered and without resistance. Even in the running of governmental affairs, we look up to the foreigners to guide us, and more often than not, dictate on us. However, he said there is a problem when it comes to jitneys because it is not easy to determine their year of manufacture. It was learned that jitney bodies are made here but the parts are surplus. “But we could examine the registration papers to find out if these were tampered ” Darimbang said. He said that tampered papers can be caught because vehicle registration is now computerized. “We will not renew or confirm franchises of older vehicles, although owners may replace their old units with new models,” he said. Darimbang, however, said that the franchise of repainted old units purposely to make it appear that the unit is new would not be renewed, too. He added that the cost for renewing or confirming a franchise is around P 1,000 considering that there are no penalties for delinquency. By the end of October this year, Darimbang said that the phased out vehicles would no longer be allowed

on the road as public utility vehicles. For buses, Darimbang cited some specific cases such as the old units of Batman and Lucy plying the eastern Misamis Oriental route. He also included the old unit of the Super 5 plying the Cagayan de Oro-Wao route.
