ANILA – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Sunday lauded Filipinos in Indonesia for their “good standing” in the country and thanked them for their contributions to sustaining trade, tourism and people to people links between the two countries. Marcos made this remark in his speech during his visit to the Filipino community in a hotel in Jakarta, his first official activity during his three-day state visit to Indonesia from Sept. 4-6. “I am very happy to see that this kinship and close people-to-people ties continue to endure as shown by the vitality of the Filipino community here in Indonesia. P1B earmarked to compensate Marawi property owners MANILA – The amount of PHP1 billion has been set aside to compensate residents of Marawi City who lost private properties during the 2017 siege, Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel said on Sunday. “The allocation for the Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Fund has been included in the 2023 national budget,” Pimentel said. “The item is lodged in the PHP31-billion Calamity Fund for next year.” The reparation fund is pursuant to the Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Law of 2022, or Republic Act 11696, according to Pimentel. The lawmaker from Mindanao said the PHP1 billion would be used to provide tax-free compensation to: * Lawful owners of residential, commercial and other properties, including cultural structures, destroyed or damaged, either totally or partially, on the occasion of the Marawi siege; and * Owners of private properties demolished in accordance with the Marawi Recovery, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program. “We expect the compensation payout to rev up reconstruction activities in Marawi by private property owners,” See OWNERS, page 11
Wanted: Higher-paying jobs for 15-30 age bracket MANILA – Senator Sonny Angara on Sunday suggested that the government come up with higher quality and higher paying jobs for those aged 15 to 30, saying the age bracket has the lowest pay in the country. Citing records from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Angara said there are 13.8 million employed in the 15-30 age group. The top industries where they are employed are wholesale and retail, repair of motor vehicles and
motorcycles; agriculture and forestry; construction; manufacturing; and administrative and support service activities. The PSA estimates at least 2.02 million of them were underemployed in 2021, or those employed but are still looking for additional work hours or other jobs that can provide them with additional work hours. “It’s clear to me that the quality of jobs that we produce is what we should be looking after.
