T
he quake that rocked most of the Philippines last October 15 is one for the books. Not because of the many lives that it took away but the cultural treasures it has toppled to pieces. Centuries old churches and even natural wonders like the Chocolate hills succumbed to the great magnitude of the earthquake. It took only less than sixty seconds to almost obliterate famous churches in Bohol and also threaten famed landmark like the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño in Cebu. The sights we see on our newsfeeds of the devastation are so heartbreaking and all we can do is send a silent prayer to the people who are affected. Maybe it was a good thing that it happened on a weekday and a special non-working holiday too or the death toll could have been worse. I can just imagine the panic it would have caused if it happened on a weekend and all those churches are packed with churchgoers. These architectural wonders beautifully built by our forefathers and are a reminder of the colorful and somehow tumultuous past of our country. They have withstood countless other calamities and have silently witnessed history as it unfolded throughout time but sadly, all we see now are defeated façades of their once mighty and awe-
inspiring images. It is truly saddening to know that these famous churches might never be restored again however, like in any other tragedy that we all have experienced I have confidence that we Filipinos will rise above this catastrophe and heal once more. These broken treasures of Bohol are somehow a reminder that we should not forsake the cultural and historical landmarks that we have been proud of for years. Let us revisit all the other remaining iconic sites that we have and see to it that we do something to protect them for the years to come. If we intend to continue to showcase our heritage to future generations then now is perhaps the right time to look for ways to truly preserve them. I have yet to find out what we can do as ordinary people to help out in restoring those that are still standing. If it takes for us to shell out some of our extra funds then I hope we share what we can. Let us not wait for another tragedy of this nature to find the value and importance handed down by the generations before us. Someday, we will be grateful that we have done what we could now.

Everyday Christmas
F
ew days ago while I was meeting a friend at a mall, she suddenly said in the midst of our conversation “Christmas songs”. We just paused and smiled to each other and I said to her yeah... “Christmas is here”. Even though I was tired that day hearing Christmas carols softly playing made me relaxed somehow. When September kicks in and it gets nearer to December, everyone’s mood is affected somehow or something inside us is stirred and we just shift to the loving season mode. So how I wish its Christmas every day... because we tend to be more reflective, more compassionate, more giving in this season. Well if you come to think of it the very essence of Christmas is Jesus. If not for his birth there will be no saviour. His coming is a reminder of God’s love despite man’s wickedness. If we truly believe that He is our saviour then it isn’t just but right that we live in everyday gratitude that He came to save us. The Christmas trees, trimmings and gifts just add colors to the season and somehow reminds us to celebrate but even without it we should always be reminded for the real reason not just for the season but whole year through. Even in this time of grief because of the earthquake many lives again were lost and historical infrastructures destroyed but, we are never without hope because Jesus lives in us.

Breast Cancer: What’s New?
ctober is designated as the Pink Month- which is a celebration for the awareness of the Big C of the Breast. And, last night, I had a wonderful episode in Dynamic Living the Total You (Cable Channel 17 and Antennae Channel 25), with THRIVE CDO members Caryn and Mabel (with hubby Mike), share their experiences when they were diagnosed with the Big C. And, the episode became more enlightening with the presence of none other than the Breast Cancer Specialist Dr Jose Rhoel De Leon. In my previous articles on Breast Cancer ( one article mostly each year, and usually during its awareness month, I have already discussed the basics of what each one of us, should know about what brings the disease, the different screening tests that are available and treatment options. There is really no escaping the Big C, as just being a woman in her 40’s (though cases younger in their 30’s and even 20’s are confirmed) is already a huge risk by itself. According to the DOH report, released sometime in October 18, 2011, the Philippines has the highest incidence or number of cases in South East Asia, and we have the poorest survival rate too.
We can surmise that the reason for the rising number of cases are twofold: better screening and reporting thereby the increase in the statistical data, and, with our country emerging into a more industrialized nation, with it causing a more sedentary lifestyle, the ease and affordability of fast foods (diet being one of the environmental factors for the causation of the disease), alcohol consumption and smoking- bingo! All those are needed for the ballooning number of cases is truly there. But, we should take heart and be optimistic, as in the fight of other diseases like a Zero Cholera or Polio eradication became a reality, so, the future for defeating Breast Cancer holds promise too. Just by making the risks more predictable, and most cases diagnosed very early into the disease, then it may not be that difficult for the future mothers, daughters and wives to have their breast cancers prevented. And should they have the disease, for it to be cured, and may even have the hope for them to outlive the big C. The most common and helpful diagnostic test for breast masses, aside from a breast examination (self or clinical), is a mammography. Although
the age recommendation do vary, with some advocating 40 and above, it is still best to seek the recommendation of the Attending Physician. If one has a strong family history, the mammography may even be done earlier than 40. The Medical News did have this to say” majority of the deaths from the Big C occurs in younger women who do not have regular mammography”. With the advent of newer models of mammographic machine (Digital, Magnetic Resonance Mammography), the sensitivity of which it can detect the masses, no matter how small the size, has increased over time. This diagnostic tool is very much available and not so expensive, that to miss out one’s chance of early detection would truly be a nonforgivable omission. Another important scientific advance in the study of Breast Cancers is the use of sentinel lymph node biopsy. The sentinel nodes are located in the axilla, and are a catchment area for the cancer cells from the breast. Staging now becomes easier, with just examining the sentinel node for the presence or absence of tumor cells. I do remember though that, as early
as 2003, Dr De Leon and I already did sentinel node biopsies utilizing an immuonostain, Cytokeratin, and we were able to document its use for staging the disease of the patients. Management wise, surgical intervention, chemotherapy, radiation and hormonal treatment are still good. There are modifications like treatment these days is geared more on breast conservation, and newer studies have come out with neo-adjuvant treatment. This simply means the giving of chemotherapeutic agents to shrink the size of the tumor prior to removal. And advocates for the use of hormonal treatment (Tamoxifen) for 10 years instead of 5 years, have come out with clinical studies, saying that it further improves the life span of the patient, by reducing tumor recurrence. It may not come then as a surprise that with better technologies and improved scientific data, that, Breast Cancer too may become a thing of the past! Early diagnosis, prompt treatment, faith in your Specialist and faith in God plus Hope for a Life that can make a difference to all you come in contact with- that is what makes you a beautiful creature ...

The Joys of Reading
very single night before I go to sleep, I am far, far away. I could be in Ingary – a fantastic place where castles fly, seven-league boots exist and wizards and witches battle each other out for power. I could be in London or France or New York or in a flat disc balanced on the backs of four elephants that stand on top of a giant turtle. I could be in faraway galaxies or even in other dimensions. I am wherever my books take me. Never mind that I lack sleep or that I'm often out of sorts in the morning and need huge cups of coffee to kickstart my day. I’m having the time of my life and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
My mom used to always freak out about my reading habits and often claim that I'm going way overboard. When I was in high school and at the height of my obsession with books, she would endlessly scold me for reading throughout the night. So I had to hide under the blankets with the lights off and read with a flashlight. Sometimes I would stay inside the bathroom to read. But when she noticed my frequent bathroom visits and realized something was up (she has a rather remarkable nose for sniffing out suspicious behavior), she would knock every time I stay too long in the bathroom and frisk
me on my way out. With this tactic, she was able to confiscate a number of books that I carefully hid inside my shirt. College came and nothing changed. Except I was on my own already and mom is too far away to be able to nag me about my constant reading. I would stay up until 5 in the morning to read. Oh bliss. I only wish to impart this one thing to my future kids and to the younger generation: Please read books and novels and anything you could get your hands on. There’s only so much you could experience on your own and you need books to widen your mind. To the parents, please take time to read to your little ones before
you sleep. Studies show that kids who are being read to at night fare better academically than those who aren't. Reading to your kids will spark their imagination, develop critical thinking, help them become focused and learn to pay attention, and of course, it will instill in them a deep appreciation for reading. In today's tech-driven lifestyle, more and more kids turn to social media, TV, and video games instead of picking up a book. I find this really sad. Nothing enhances a child's imagination more than books. Albert Einstein did say that imagination is better than knowledge, right? And how could you argue with the guy?

Onboard a Supervan 900 Skydiving Airplane gets me up to 15,000 feet or 4,570 meters, the highest allowable skydive elevation. At this height, the atmosphere is almost without oxygen. This liberating dive allows me to free fall over 60 grueling seconds! A combination of extreme adrenaline sudden death drop feeling with a terminal velocity of 200 km/hour that seems like flying rather than falling, and with a sudden stop which pulls me up again once I pull the Parachute container before my Altimeter reach 3,000 feet, then, a surreal feeling of calmness greets me where I gently glide my chute for five minutes overlooking the North Shore of Oahu and the entire glimpse of Oahu Island. This canopy flight is so peaceful and relaxing, makes you forget the sudden intense terminal drop speed where you came from, until then, I can’t complain why I should return to earth to pay $400 for trying to kill myself !

Globe helps quake victims thru relief ops; encourages Red Cross donation via GCash

eading telecommunications company Globe Telecom employee-volunteers conduct relief operations in the municipalities of Loboc, Maribojoc, and Loon in Bohol, benefitting some 200 families in each area. The three municipalities are among the areas hardest hit by the earthquake which struck Central Visayas Tuesday morning. Maribojoc and Loon even became isolated due to damaged bridges. Relief packs consisting of food and water were turned over to the local government unit of Maribojoc and the Department of Social Welfare and Development for Loon. At the same time, Globe provided prepaid load to the Disaster Risk Reduction
Management Office (DRRMO) of the Department of Education to help them monitor the effects of the earthquake. The company, likewise, encourages its subscribers to donate to the Red Cross via GCash electronic wallet. To help, Globe subscribers can simply dial *143# in their mobile phone and select GCash; Select Others then Donate; Enter the amount, 4-digit MPIN, and select Red Cross. Earlier, Globe also set up Libreng Tawag stations at the Cebu City Medical Center, Bohol Sports Complex, and Carmen Municipal Hall in Bohol to assist affected families in their communication needs.
