Cine Europa in full swing in Cagayan de Oro C ine Europa's Sweet Sixteen is coming to Cagayan de Oro with no less than European Union Ambassador Guy Ledoux and University President Dr Marino M. Lerin opening the festival in Liceo de Cagayan University. Honorable Mayor Oscar S. Moreno will also grace the event. Deputy Head of Mission Raoul Imbach of the Embassy of Switzerland will join the launch of Cine Europa. "Operation Libertad" tells how in 1978, the members of a small revolutionary group break into a Swiss bank near Zurich and how they tried to prove the collusion between the Helvetic financial system and dictators. Thirty years later, the tapes of the Operation Libertad resurfaced and the drama and action unfold. Film enthusiasts from Cagayan de Oro will enjoy 21 films starting with the special screening of Swiss film, Operation Libertad. The film tells the story of a group of a small revolutionary group that broke into a Swiss bank way back in the late 70s.The action was to prove then, the conspiracy between the Helvetic financial system and dictators. Aside from the Swiss' "Operation Libertad", movie-going public from Cagayan De Oro will be able to enjoy 20 other European films from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary , Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. EU Ambassador Guy Ledoux said that the presence of Cine Europa in Cagayan de Oro sends a strong signal of how important is the cultural collaboration between the European Union and the Philippines. He also said that people from Mindanao continue to enjoy Cine Europa film festival which is the European Union's lasting gift to the Philippines and is also the reaffirmation of the shared cultural values of the Europeans with the Filipinos. This is the fifth time that the film festival is going to Cagayan de Oro City in partnership with the Liceo de Cagayan University. Cine Europa is ongoing in CDO until the 13th of October 2013. EU Ambassador Guy Ledoux commended the support of the academe through the Liceo de Cagayan University and the Film Development Council of the Philippines which have endeavoured to bring Cine Europa in Mindanao. Admission to the film screenings is free on a firstcome, first-served basis. Now on its 16th year, As Cine Europa is reaching more Filipinos than ever before with screenings right across the country. With its expansion from three to six cities last year, attendance has increased by a quarter from 29,000 in 2011 to 36,500 in 2012. With numerous award winning European movies including romantic musicals, wartime movies, historical dramas, family comedies and even world class documentaries, there really is something for everyone at Cine Europa 16. The film festival opened at the Shangri-La Plaza in Manila and moved to Baguio, Iloilo and Cebu. Cine Europa will then move on to Cinematheque Davao City from 15 to 20 October. Cine Europa 16 is organised by the European Union Cultural Group in Manila which gathers together the Embassies and Cultural Institutes of the European Union (Representations in Manila including the Embassies of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Spain, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, the Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines and the European cultural institutes (Alliance Française, British Council, Goethe-Institut, Philippine-Italian Association, and Instituto Cervantes de Manila,. the Film Development Council of the Philippines, the Independent Film Cooperative, the Shangri-La Plaza Mall (Manila), Arts Council of Cebu and Liceo de Cagayan de Oro (Mindanao). wiss film “Operation Libertad” kicked off for the 16th edition of Cine Europa at Rodelsa Hall of Liceo de Cagayan University Thursday, October 10. It’s the fifth year LDCU is hosting Cine Europa in partnership with the Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines. EU Delegation Head Guy Ledoux and Swiss Embassy Deputy Head of Mission Raoul Imbach graced the momentous occasion with Mayor Oscar Moreno and Liceo U President Dr. Mariano M. Lerin, CPA. Nicolas Wadimoff’s “Operation Libertad” officially launched this year’s edition. It starts off with a good enough premise about young Swiss revolutionaries in the late 1970’s but is constrained by the point of view of the storyteller whose collection of films of an episode in their young lives a la “Blair Witch Project”. Honestly, I can’t see how it became one of the featured films of the Director’s Fortnight at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival in France with all the limitations going against it. Acting is generally wooden and the storyline about a cadre of young, clueless revolutionaries who attempt to torpedo a money laundering operation by a South American dictator in a Swiss bank. The predictable storyline and wooden acting aside, the viewer is soon off to dreamland given the excellent airconditioning of Rodelsa Hall. When I came to, there was more of the same. There’s some comic relief but too few and far between, 20 other films from 16 countries were also featured in the festival. Cine Europa 16 festival films were screened for free at the Rodelsa Hall from October 10 until October 13. The festival next visits Davao City on October 15-20.

verything you want to know in a person, you’ll know when he tells you about his dreams and aspirations. A few months ago, I subjected my friends to incessant questions about what their dreams are. Or as I like to call it, their “pangandoy”. I love the term pangandoy better than its English counterparts. Dream and aspiration just don’t capture it fully. Pangandoy is more sublime, heartfelt, earnest… transcendent. Anyway, the reason behind the sudden round of persistent questioning was a certain Cagayan de Oro taxi driver. During one of my work-related wanderings, I found myself in a conversation with a cab driver. He is not your average, run-ofthe-mill cabbie. One look at him and you’ll know he’s different. He’s probably in his late 30s or early 40s, very clean, polite and patient. He engages everyone in a conversation and shares stories about everything and everyone he met. Normally, I would be mildly irritated when a cab driver is way too chatty; I like to ride a cab in silence as I tinker with my android tablet. But somehow, I excused this guy. There’s something deep about him, like he was a younger Yoda. He sounded really wise and was brimming with a strong sense of “pangandoy”. We were stuck in traffic so I asked him about what he does aside from driving. And so his lengthy soliloquy began. He’s the second child of a poor family with six children. All of them grew up in Cagayan de Oro.

Among the six, he seems to be the only one with a dream. He got married, and now has 2 children of his own, a boy and a girl. At this point of his story, my eyes were beginning to get droopy. His story only started to pique my interest when he told me what he does to make ends meet, and how he strives to earn more than what his family requires. His work begins at 7am everyday and he comes home at 9 in the evening. He has a long list of“suki” passengers who call him so he could drive them around everywhere, even out into the back of beyond. But driving his taxi is just the tip of the iceberg. It is merely a fraction of what he does for a living. He said he uses it as a way to move around in the city which is what he primarily needs for his other sources of income. Aside from being a taxi driver, he also acts as sales agent and broker to several businesses including (but not limited to) cars and residential lots. He accepts all kinds of errands even those as delicate and painstaking as delivering enormous birthday and wedding cakes. He dabbles in the hospitality business too. He hangs out at the airport to pick up passengers and he is a licensed tour guide as well. He arranges trips for tourists into the different sights and activities in CDO and nearby areas: rafting at Cagayan River, zipline at Dahilayan, or a quick drive to Tinago Falls and Maria Cristina Falls in Iligan. He even makes money out of

his hidden talent! Turns out that this particular manong has dancing abilities. He once belonged to Gary V's backup dance crew. His group was also present in every single contest and program back in the heydays. So to top off all his money-making initiatives, he also teaches dance lessons and choreographs dance routines. His clients usually include employees who are forced to present a dance number in a company event, or groups of people who find themselves in other similar mindnumbing situations. But he draws the line at illegal activities. A passenger once asked him if he would like to make quick money out of delivering illegal cargo. He told me that he politely declined because he doesn’t plan on engaging in activities that will jeopardize his family’s future. As of now, he has already built a house for his family – in a residential lot he himself bought. ”Not every taxi driver could do that,” he said, “soon, I’ll be driving my very own taxi.” I will not be surprised if I met this taxi driver again a few years from now and he’ll be driving his own gleaming taxi cab. A guy named Samuel Johnson once said, “Our aspirations are our possibilities.” We could only soar as high as our dreams and hopes could take us. ...So how about you? Ever thought about your pangandoy lately?

s children of God, we are called to be salt and light wherever we are but sometimes when life’s pressures are on us we fail to be such. So are we just going to allow darkness to defeat us? Let me just remind you as a His child each of us has the light within us, but we have to let it shine or else it will be a waste. The question is how can we shine? Well first and foremost we have to make sure we have that light from God within us or else we cannot truly light up our surroundings meaning we cannot last as a light when we are not

anchored in Him. How can you be a light to the industry you are in? Practice the Truth all the time, refuse to pass on gossip. Before you judge others look at yourself first. Give extra give grace to the difficult people. Stop complaining and do the best that you can do. Lower expectations and raise appreciation to people. Even if we will not be recognized by doing such God sees our hearts so it’s still worth it. Salt adds flavour so as members to the industries we are in let us be the “salt” that we can

be. Let us be blessings to others. DV Sore No More

t’s been months since we saw the last of the Night Café at Divisoria and indeed the atmosphere and energy is quite different now. Gone were the amped volume of street noise that clashed with the loud band music and the chatter of pedestrians and street vendors. Just last Friday, I had the chance to walk the streets of Divisoria once again and I like the much toned down atmosphere, you can actually relax and breathe better. There are still occasional street vendors selling their wares and some street kids milling around but at least this time around, strolling is such a breeze. There is not much litter as it used to be, too however looking for a trash bin will be quite a problem. It took me a few minutes to locate for one. Oh yeah, the traffic is bearable now and parking spaces are not much of a headache

anymore. Good to know that the BBoys are still there. They are the ones who do amazing dance tricks at the center island. I have known some of them and they are a talented bunch whose love for dance is unstoppable. If you happen to pass by, try to stop for a while and for sure you will be entertained by their flexibility and strength. The giant LED TV Screen set up by one of the country’s network giants also provides ample illumination and a relief for those who like to while away their time while sitting at the steps of the kiosk. That is a great place to watch the evening news or just enjoy some of your favorite shows while at the park. The outdoor spas that we somehow gotten used to during nighttime are not as prolific as before. That is a good thing since we don’t really want to see half

naked guys in the middle of the island with their arms pulled and backs rubbed and kneaded by massage therapists in plain sight of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Now that the massage area is conveniently located at the spot of the former amphitheater, it is much safer and no more worries about having to find shelter on a sudden downpour. These tweaks on this famous strip in Cagayan de Oro are a much needed one. Thank you to the local government for continuing to keep their promise of a “Hapsay CDO” and we do hope that it will be sustained as we anticipate the coming of the Christmas rush. On another note, thank you to everyone who watched and enjoyed Cine Europa 16 at the Rodelsa Hall. The overwhelming turnout is such a great stress-reliever. Salamat to the max!

isamis Oriental is a home of beautiful natural resources. Here, anyone can find scenic spots, natural parks, beaches, waterfalls, historical places and caves, among others. The beauty and richness of these natural wonders invite tourists to come and explore its beauty and offerings. Tourism is one of the priorities in the administration of Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Vincente B. Emano. It is a critical element in his quest for economic growth of the province. In this way, resources will be generated and at the same time, biodiversity will be preserved. In the recently concluded Explore MisOr Tourism Summit, the provincial government has identified a number of tourist destinations and as well, potential ones needing improvement. Hence, they introduced sites spotted for future development. The following are just a few. Aya-aya Falls Aya-aya Falls is a body of falling water situated in the heart of Lugait. It connects two barangays and is located approximately 73 km. west of the city. A rich picture of green forest surrounds the whole place. In reaching this place, an individual would pass through foot trails up to an elevated place with a pool of water. A few climbs will transcend him to the place. The place where the falls is located would be a perfect avenue for trekking and mountain climbing, giving the thrill of adventure and adrenaline rush. The water counterpart is also a good place for free diving, extreme plunging, swimming, fishing and boating. The location is also a refreshing area inviting anyone for a picnic with family or friends.

Mainit Hot Spring Mainit Hot Spring is a spring located in Barangay Tugasnon of Alubijid town. Alubijid is one of the municipalities of Misamis Oriental which natural beauty is not disturbed and well-preserved. This is maybe the reason why such beautiful spots still exist. Mainit Hot Spring provides ample relaxation to its visitors through its hot water, recharging both body and mind. The hot water having its sulphur content and temperature reaches 32 degree Celsius offers a natural body massage for tired fellows. The place where the spring lies also enticed mountaineers and campers alike to visit it. Mountainclimbing, hiking and trekking activities can also be done in the place. Alubijid can be reached through riding jeepneys or buses. It will take more than one hour to reach Alubijid proper and to Mainit Hot Spring. Agutayan White Island Agutayan White Island is an isle located off the coast of the Municipality of Jasaan. It is made up of 5000 square meters fine, white sand mounted in the middle of 3-hectare marine sanctuary. Bordering it is a shallow and clear water, a perfect location for various recreations like swimming, diving and snorkelling alike. It also contains amazing marine creations like Agukoy crabs which are abundant in the area. The island contains no trees in it but it is a perfect view of white and blue still refreshing to the eyes and perfect for sightseeing. In getting there, one can ride bus from the city and stop at Barangay Jampason, Jasaan. Agutayan Island will then be reached through riding a boat for about few minutes.
