Pelaez, the Chairman of the BSP – Misamis Oriental Council expects more than 3000 participants within the province and from other neighboring provinces who are invited to the said event. He hopes that the Jamborette will create a spark and would be a good start to really awaken and revitalize the Scouting Movement here in Misamis Oriental and the Philippines in general.

Even the winds and the waves obey him!” – Matthew 8:23-27 The best way to counter our fears in the midst of Yolanda is to fill ourselves with His word. Trying to put ourselves in the shoes of those disciples who were facing the raging seas and the storm is like going through Sendong perhaps if we will put in modern times. For many of us who has gone through that nature disaster we were traumatize somehow in fact when the rain starts pouring hard though PAGASA only says we’re signal number one I cannot help but feel what I felt when we experienced Sendong. With these real fears coming out I have no other weapon against it but sincere prayer and His word from the verses above and one of my life verses “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9. re you a TV series fan? If yes, then this week's article is for you. If not, well maybe you ought to reconsider it. There are a lot of gems on cable TV that are begging to be watched. Personally, I relish these shows like a sweet, savory, and utterly delightful bar of chocolate that needs special time to be thoroughly enjoyed. Today I'll be sharing these with you too, with the hopes that we could all at least be crazy about it together. 1. DEXTER He’s a serial killer, yes. But one you can’t help but love. His journey is filled with highs and lows and sparks of humanity and evil and goodness and love and all sorts of good things sandwiched in with the bad. The show has already ended, but a little part of me (or okay, a huge one) truly wishes to see more of him. In a movie or a sequel perhaps? Who knows, right? I’m crossing my fingers all the time. 2. HOMELAND There’s cool secret agent stuff, betrayal, love, friendship, fear, idealism, patriotism, terrorism, a lot of other -isms, and basically a smorgasbord of everything we know and love about covert CIA operations. It’s shocking, thrilling, and so very raw that you could feel their anguish like it’s your own. And you’re not even close to being a CIA agent for that matter. DUTERTE

ne art that combines all human expressions is theatre. It functions both as form and meaning. Both functions of theatre as an art facilitate, challenge or correct a system that many of us in a society conveniently adhere. But in truth, theatre, like any other art, is a powerful system that changes perspectives, educates people, constructs, deconstructs and reconstructs societies. In other words theatre is powerful, and it is worthy of our time and attention for it is one effective tool to counter against disheveled systems. And we are very happy that in Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, theatre is alive. Along with theatre is a serious use of the craft as means of discourse and learning. It is even part of both academic and sociocultural formation frames in the university. This formation is evident as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Dulaang Atenista (DA), the resident theater and one of the performing arts companies of Xavier University. few more weeks and 2013 would be over and we will be celebrating the new year. But, it would appear that the ugly faces of natural calamities had to leave their marks on us. The latest earthquake left so much devastation in Bohol and the surrounding areas and here again, the world’s strongest super typhoon , Yolanda (HAIYAN) ravaged our country, with its effects most strongly felt in Samar and Leyte. The number of deaths and the degree of damage as of this writing is as yet to be determined. Once again, it brings to mind, how each one of us should prepare ourselves in the face of disasters. Disaster preparedness is something that should not just be left in the hands of the government agencies. We each have a role to play. In doing so, we minimize the after effects of the calamity that may affect our locality and homes. The impact of disasters is enormous in terms of human and economic terms. People are driven out of their homes with many stranded in areas where help may not be easily brought to. And, the probability of help being inadequate or delayed is always there. Thus, it is to everyone’s
advantage if, each of us know what to prepare and what to do, during these difficult times. Year in year out, each locality has its own natural calamity to contend with. A friend of mine once mentioned to me, that their family having lived all their lives in Legaspi, where typhoons are but ordinary occurrences, they have learned to live with it, and have built their homes in such a way that the damage is minimized. I was impressed too, when an old lady was interviewed a day before the expected landfall of typhoon Yolanda, as she was seen cutting all leaves and removing all the BUKO fruits from her tree. It was her way of preparing for the strong winds that will surely come her way. Being ready is always one great preventive measure, that is not only applicable in most health concerns, but is very much true in the face of natural disasters too. Knowing what one is up against is the first step of preparedness. Then, preparing for the basic needs, should it already hit, is the next step. Which includes stocking up on food , water and emergency kits. Food that can be readily eaten, minus all the fanfare of preparations, that is balanced,
nutritious as food is an essential part of survival. Should water need be gathered from the rainfall, or if unsure of its safety, it is but wise to treat the water with a few drops of ordinary household chlorine bleach or, if it is still possible, to boil prior to use. Remember that most infectious diseases are transmitted through unsafe, contaminated waters. Medicine kits that contain the basics for treating fever, coughs and colds, wound care, oral rehydration tablets for diarrhea are MUST HAVE’S. Not forgetting of course, one’s daily supply for maintenance drugs for hypertension, Diabetes and the like. A fully charged cell phone, with extra batteries, flash lights, candles and dry matches are also important things that one must prepare. Extra clothing should also be kept in a safe place. And, lest we forget, a healthy attitude, faith in our MAKER, PRAYERS and TRUST that this is but a passing event in this worldly life, will help us all survive no matter how strong the winds that batter us or the strength of the quake that jolts our lives. Preparedness for all types of disasters, be it natural or manmade, will surely help determine the outcome of the aftermath...

It helps a lot when we memorize scriptures because God’s words are true it penetrates deep within. As we face this strongest storm as they say let us remember God is always in control no matter what but that doesn’t mean He will go against nature, sometimes He allows such to let us grow in our Faith. We might ask why allow such if it can cost many lives. In His word He said “As the heavens are higher than theearth,so are my ways higher than your ways andmy thoughts than your thoughts”.- Isaiah 55:9. We are maybe prone to blame Him for allowing such but He is omniscient so rather than blaming God let us Trust in Him after all He is the Creator and we are only His creation. Let us remember this promise “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”- Romans 8:28

The fringe includes performances from The Xavier Stage (XU) and DULAPI (XUHS), both are new companies in Xavier. There will also be exhibits, workshops and fora as part of the festival components. Ateneo Theatre Festival recognizes the existence, abundance and difference in culture, practice and identity’ among the theatre companies of various Ateneos. It has been known that theatre is a tradition among the Ateneo Schools. Mr. Ray Anthony Lao authored the concept and initiated ATF, and he serves as the Festival Director together with DA’s artistic and production pool. ATF is also produced by Xavier University through its Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts, and the festival is endorsed and supported by the Cagayan de Oro City Tourism Council and its Culture and Arts Committee. Dulaang Atenista was founded in 1988. It has grown to be one of the significant theatre companies in Mindanao. DA serves as mirror of experiences and realities and ‘engages the promotion of Filipino art and culture, peace, diversity and human dignity.’ Most, if not all, of the productions of Dulaang Atenista are used for public discourse and interactions. This year, DA has presented two productions such as All in the Timing and Kapeng Barako: Samahan ng mga Bitter. And to culminate the silver celebration, DA offers Balay ni Mamang in January 2014. ILO ILO Special Advance Screening for CDO set for Nov. 21

he special advance screening of the award winning film “ILO ILO”at SM City Cagayan de Oro Cinema 2 has been reset to Thursday, 15 November 2013. The organizers will be bringing over for this advance screening actress Angeli Bayani who plays Auntie Terry, the beloved Nanny in the movie, Mr. Charles Lim, the PR consultant who reunited her with her adopted family after 16 years and Teresita Sajonia herself, the subject of the movie. This first ever screening in the Philippines of this award winning movie is a fund raising activity of El Circulo Zamboangueno de Cagayan de Oro, and proceeds shall be donated towards the rebuilding of the war ravaged portions of Zamboanga City through ABS-CBN's Ayuda Zamboanga. Winner of the Cinema d’Or award for first time directors at the prestigious Cannes film festival, the award winning movie has been endorsed by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration and SM’s Global Pinoy Center. “We endorse this movie to all OFWs and their families,” said Harry P. Borres, officer-in-charge of OWWA Region X. “We hope the general public especially the youth appreciate the plight of OFWs and their families and how Filipino Values are helping shape a better world.” “Please help support this project,” said Flor Tizon Victoriano, president of the OFW Association “Pearl of the Sea.” The movie is inspired by the true story of Ilongga Teresita Sajonia who moved to Singapore in the 1990s to work as a nanny, taking care of three little boys. Once, on a vacation with the family, she visited a wishing well and wished that her wards would grow up to be decent men and that they would not
forget about her. Decades later, her wish came true and it was no less than a Cannes International Film Festival award-winning film that paved the way for the reunion between her and the boys she loved and cared for like they were her own. Set in Singapore, ILO ILO chronicles the relationship between a family of three and their Filipino nanny, Teresa. The family needs to adapt to the presence of this stranger, which further threatens their already strained relationship. Still, Teresa and Jia Le, the young and troublesome she cares for, soon form a bond. Their unique connection continues to develop and soon she becomes a part of the family. But it is 1997 and the Asian financial crisis is starting to be felt in the region. The film which won the Camera d’Or award in Cannes and is now Singapore's entry to the Oscar Awards for best foreign language film. It is the feature film debut of Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen, one of the three boys “Auntie Terry” took care of as a domestic helper in the Lion City. Chen is the first Singaporean to win a top award at Cannes for a feature film. Teresita worked for the Chen family for eight years, but had to return home in 1997 due to health issues. Since then, she had lost touch with the family but still carried photos of the three boys with her. “They were very nice kids; they could be mischievous at times, but they’re really very sweet,” she said. In late August, ILO ILO was screened in Singapore cinemas and “Auntie Terry” was there to attend its premiere screening. Her dream to revisit Singapore and the Chen family was made possible when Cebu Pacific flew her back to the city state in August 2013 on a

The characters are beyond amazing (I lack the word to describe how good they are). Claire Danes is a force to be reckoned with and her emotions are so palpable that I could almost reach out and feel them in the air. (okay enough crazy talk) Seriously though, it wouldn’t receive all sorts of recognition and awards if it isn’t some sort of TV’s gift to humankind. 3. GRIMM As a kid who grew up exposed to Grimm’s fairy tales (both the gory version and the Disneyfied ones), I couldn’t help but love the premise of this show. It goes this way: the Grimms (the Brothers Grimm being among them) are an ancient line of people with supernatural abilities to see through the human masks of monsters and recognize them for what they truly are. It’s a cop drama with a dark twist: like a police procedural thriller with fangs and actual monsters. Sounds like a lot of rubbish, the way I explained it. But if you could get past that, you will actually be in for a lot of surprise. Believe me. 4. ARROW The truth is, I’m not really a fan of DC Comics. Except for Batman, I don’t feel too enamored with the DC characters the way I do about my Marvel guys. That being said, I still love me some superhero show so I decided to watch the first season despite not being too impressed. I was, like, meh most of the time. But enter season two and I went from meh to woah!!! just like that. Apparently the show’s creative team is starting to wake up from a season-long stupor and now working double time to bring in the goods. New cool characters, a bunch of scary villains, interesting storylines, and crazy cool dynamics between the characters. It helps too that there’s plenty of eye candy to go around, starting with the chiseled Mr. Queen himself. 5. DRACULA This is a new series that I have just started watching (all episodes in one sitting), but it makes this list because it holds so much promise. There’s too many Dracula stories already and truthfully, I’m sick to my stomach with all the proliferating vampire shows(enough with the undead already!!!). BUT, BUT, BUT...This is a fresh look at the old tale. It actually makes you root for the evil guy himself and you can’t help but wish he would fly off into the night with his lady love Mina. 6. THE BIG BANG THEORY A bunch of nerds and a pretty girl. Doesn’t sound like much until you watch an episode. Or two, or, three, or an entire season, and all the seasons. Yes, it could escalate as quickly as that. I feel like I know these guys so well that they are starting to feel like my actual real-life friends. Sounds a bit sad, until you start watching and realize what I’m trying to say here. So much has happened in seven seasons: I have lost track of the times Penny and Leonard broke up and got back together, Raj can now talk to women, Howie got married, and even Sheldon now
has a girlfriend. And through it all, not once did the show waver, maintaining a high level of comedy and unprecedented wit as the show went on for years. And no, I have never watched an episode that failed to elicit a chuckle. Or a loud, unladylike chortle. 7. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER So, haaaaave you met Ted and the gang? If not, you’ve missed a lot of happiness and fun from this LEGEN–wait for it–DARY show. Come to think of it, it’s kinda weird how Ted’s future kids had to listen to him rambling on and on and on (for 9 seasons) about how he met his wife (even including the naughty bits and such). Shoving all that aside and under the rug, the show really is phenomenal. The wit, the characters, the tidbits of stories that make up the entire masterpiece, the little details that gets imprinted in your mind… there’s no other word to describe it but l e g e n d a r y. It’s currently on its last season now, and still never misses a beat through it all. In fact, a spin-off series is said to be on the works. How super cool is that? 8. SHERLOCK I LOVE SHERLOCK HOLMES so much that I am willing to watch any of his incarnations on TV and film. ALL OF IT!!! But even if I didn’t, I’m pretty sure I would still be watching this gem of a show. At first I had laughed at the slang word they use to call the fans of Benedict Cumberbatch. Cumberb*tches, HAH! But then after a few episodes it dawn on me that I am fast becoming one myself and there’s no way I could escape that fate. This show is in my opinion way better than the highly Americanized Sherlock version (Elementary), and they stuck to the original stories as closely as they could. As a Holmes fan, I thoroughly appreciate and enjoy that. Runners- up: Aside from the ones that deserved a spot on the above list, there is also a bunch of other cool shows that take their place in the runner-up list. Here they are: 9. CASTLE – Nathan Fillon is endearing as a boyish and popular author of crime novels who helps out the NYPD in solving their cases. Of course, he meets the love of his life in the process. 10. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST – Now on its second season, this police procedural show may not seem like much, but it does deliver. I especially like the chemistry between Kristen Kreuk and beast guy Jay Ryan, and sometimes I do roll my eyes at the cheesiness of it all. But yeah, I still keep watching it somehow. 11. ONCE UPON A TIME – Because bringing fairy tale characters into the present-day world never gets old. 12. NEW GIRL – Who can resist Zooey Deschanel and her crazy antics? Apparently, I can’t. She just shines as bright as those huge blue eyes of hers. It helps that the rest of the characters are pretty awesome too. So there you go. I hope you have as much fun watching these as I do. Just grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and curl up with these shows over the weekend. I know I will. :)

Villar welcomes Yuletide season
Spearheaded by Nacionalista Party President and Vista Land Chairman Manny Villar with Crown Asia Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Mary Lee Sadiasa a giant Christmas tree was lit and a spectacular Christmas display was launched at Valenza, Sta. Rosa, Laguna to usher in the most awaited season of the year. Making the event more meaningful, early Christmas gifts were also given to kids from SOS Children’s Villages Manila.
