THOUSANDS of Philippine police officers have received administrative punishments with more than 2,000 dismissed for wrongdoings during raids where drug suspects were killed under the president’s crackdown, officials said Thursday. Communications Assistant Secretary Marie Rafael Banaag told a news conference that 14,724 police were investigated for their involvement in police drug operations that led to deaths from July 2016 until last April. She said 7,867 of them received administrative punishments for unspecified lapses. A tally presented by Banaag showed that 2,367 police officers have been fired, 4,100 suspended while the rest were reprimanded, demoted, had their salaries forfeited or deprived of certain privileges. Banaag did not say how many officers have been criminally charged for serious lapses or outright crimes committed while enforcing the crackdown, which was launched by President Rodrigo Duterte as his centerpiece program when he took office in mid-2016. Pilgrim dies in Makkah while on Hajj By DIVINA M. SUSON Correspondent

ILIGAN City--A 57-year old female Pilgrim died around 11:00 am on Friday, July 19, while on Hajj in Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Jun Alonto Datu Ramos, Head of Public Relations and Information Division of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), identified the pilgrim as Sarapia Abalimbona Taha, who is coming from Lumbayanague town in Lanao del Sur. Citing information from NCMF’s Philippine Medical Team head Dr. Abdulnasser Masorong, Jr., Ramos said Taha collapsed while entering the Masjidil Haraam, just before the Jumaah, a congregational Friday prayer. Oro scavengers arrested for breaching Verde Soko property By MARK FRANCISCO Correspondent

A total of 28 persons were arrested for theft for breaching into the compound of Verde Soko in Phividec Industrial Estate in sitio Buguac, barangay Sta. Cruz, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental and scavenging for garbage there. Tagoloan Police Station chief of police Maj. Allan Oniana identified the arrested persons as Alex Medio, Arlon Gamayan, Marito Bunghanoy, Dodong Palak, Almer Enrequiz, Rosalyn Edoria, Christopher Lamantucan, Resie Minester, Dennies Montero, Dodong Apoya, Wella Lagrada, Belen Siguay, Melania Agustin, Jenefer Cape, Alvin Loretero, Rosana Medio, Maricel Mabale, Nimpa Sadlawan, Jimmy Edoria, Caen Manrawat, Cerilena Mial, Dian Ramos, Gloria Ayoman, Ronald Mabanta, Manrawat Ferdinand, Garry Mial, Freddie Almeral,

Jun-jun Palarin, Caren Galas and Elmor Sabit, all scavengers from Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City. According to Oniana in his report, the barangay chairman of nearby Mohon requested police assistance Thursday afternoon (July 18) after receiving information that several persons have trespassed the Verde Soko compound in Phividec Industrial Estate. Police immediately responded together with Mayor Gomer Sabio and caught the 28 persons about to leave the area in their Bongo utility vehicle. When confronted, the scavengers told police that they received a go-signal that the South Korean garbage stashed at Verde Soko could already be scavenged. Police are slated to file theft charges against the suspects, considering that Verde Soko is a private property.
