Hackers attack Manila broadsheet’s website

A Manila broadsheet newspaper’s website almost shut down due to a barrage of bogus page-requests, in a “distributed denial of service” (DDoS) attack on September 13, the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) reported yesterday. The attackers also exploited vulnerabilities of the news website’s content management system (WordPress), to

redirect requests for news reports and opinion articles to a porn site, which resulted in Google and Facebook’s marking the web-pages as malicious spam and banning the web-pages from being shared. Writers for the broadsheet pointed out that the “cyber-attack” happened the day after an opinion column critical of the Philippine president was published.

A presidential spokesperson denied that the President’s communication team was behind the attack. Manila Standard Today (MST) online editor Christian Cardiente said the cyber-attacks that started on Friday (September 13) were not the first the site had experienced, but were more intense. Misor to construct new stalls at capitol compound By GERRY LEE GORIT Correspondent

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– The stalls located in front of the Northern Mindanao Medical Center and around the tennis court in the Misamis Oriental provincial capitol compound will be demolished soon to give way to new structures. Stall renters have been given notice to vacate the premises by the end of this month as planners surveyed the area for the new development. Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano has tasked an evaluation team to inspect the areas and come up with recommendations. The team, composed of head Snooky Puertas, Eduard Faelnar, Jimmy Ocampo, Gerardo Sabal

Puertas said the development plan includes colorful stalls uniform in design, public comfort rooms, and sleeping quarters for visitors of patients in the hospital. She said the plan is to make the areas look better, clean and orderly. Puertas is consultant of clean and green programs. Each of the current stall renter will be evaluated if they can return inasmuch as some of the renters have been delinquent in paying their fees to the province. Puertas said guardhouses with booms will also be built around the eprovincial capitol compound to control incoming

and outgoing traffic. In front of the hospital at least 20 new stalls will be built with all pharmacies placed side by side and all eateries together. Cooking will not be allowed in the area, only finished products will be allowed to be sold. Around the tennis court, all vendors will also be made to vacate their stalls for a new plan that will include additional parking spaces for vehicles. Puertas said the stalls will be painted in purple, candy pink or blue green.

Surigao City legislative, budget offices burglarized SURIGAO City––Thieves ransacked the city’s legislative and budget offices Friday dawn, taking away a still undetermined amount of cash and jewelries of employees, Supt. Joseph Nohara, city police chief, said He declined to give more details pending the outcome of the investigation on the two government offices, which are about 50 meters apart. Marietta Samson, acting city budget officer, said the suspects forcibly opened her drawer and steel cabinet. She, however, said that the robbers failed to take away her P7,000 cash hidden somewhere in the steel cabinet.

Samson said her officemates lost some cash and jewelries as the robbers also forcibly open all the three rooms of the office. Edelyn Ferma, supervising administrative officer of the budget office, said she lost P9,000 in personal cash and P6,000 office petty cash to the thieves. “It’s a total mess,” she said, referring to her table. Defense pregnant with admissions The much-awaited privileged speech delivered by Sen. Jinggoy Estrada Wednesday to air his side about the controversy he and two other senators are facing because of their alleged misuse of their pork barrel fund was no defense at all for it was pregnant with so many admissions. Estrada did not deny his participation in the misuse of his pork barrel fund amounting to several millions of pesos. What is making him angry about this is that there are so many of them from both the Senate and the House of Representatives who misused their pork barrel fund but it is only him and Sens. Juan Ponce Enrile and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. who were linked to this multi-billion pesos fund scam. He did not even dare deny his connections to the alleged brains of this fund scam, jailed businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles, but only hinted that there are so many of them who knew and must have dealt with Napoles with regard the disposition of their pork barrel fund. He thus mentioned a good number of allies of the sitting administration who are not included even in the audit report of the Commission on Audit and if they are included the amount of their pork barrel did not reflect the total of what had been released to them but may be guilty as well of misuse. Estrada even went to the extent of exposing himself and the other senators of having received what he called a P50 million incentive in the form of additional funding for the their favorite projects because they have voted for the conviction of then Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona during the latter’s impeachment trial. But he was quick to disabuse the minds of everyone

Accusing the chair of the audit commission of selective expose, which was what he exactly did, was misplaced because the audit was undertaken for all legislators. The pork barrel even ensured the widening of the great chasm between congressional districts. This is very real when a congressional district is represented by one whose face the Palace occupant can’t swallow. That district becomes poorer because the pork barrel is used by the Palace occupant as a tool to extract political loyalty harboring on canine devotion. There is really no reason

why the pork barrel for legislators be retained. This is what the privileged speech of Estrada clearly pointed out. His call for everyone involved in the misuse of the pork barrel fund to be included in the charge being filed against him Enrile and Revilla just confirms the massiveness of the fund’s misuse. With his admissions, we should now expect a deeper probe into this mess that Estrada unabashedly admitted to involve almost all of the honorable legislators. RDC-12 focuses on agri processing, manufacturing

ENERAL SANTOS CITY – The Regional Development Council (RDC) of Region 12 is targeting to draw more investments on agricultural processing and manufacturing as it moves to sustain an 8- to 10-percent economic growth rate for the region in the next three years.

Arturo Valero, acting RDC 12 chairperson, said in a press conference that they consider the processing and manufacturing sectors as among the key drivers in the coming years of the region’s economy, which has remained largely agriculture-based. Citing the region’s economic performance in the last three years, the official said the industrial sector has posted an increasing growth trend mainly due to the continuing expansions

in processing and manufacturing. Region 12, which is Mindanao’s third biggest economy. posted an overall economic growth of 8.1 percent in 2012. Data from the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) showed that Region 12’s industry sector achieved a 3-percent growth in 2010 and it vaulted to 10 percent in 2011 and 10.8 percent last year. The region only targeted growth rates of 5.4 percent and

5.7 percent for the industry sector in 2011 and 2012, respectively. “This could be attributed to the fact that we are already processing a greater part of our agriculture products,” said Valero, who is also regional chief of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-12. Among the region’s top processed products are canned and pouched tuna, canned pineapple, crude palm oil and pouched mackerel. Tuna, pineapple and crude palm oil are also among the leading export products of the region, which generates around US$400 million annually in export receipts. The region’s tuna exports mainly come from this city, which hosts six of the country’s seven tuna canneries and several other

processing plants. Pineapple is produced by Dole Philippines, Inc. based in Polomolok, South Cotabato and palm in Sultan Kudarat and parts of North Cotabato. “We were earlier informed that a new oil palm mill will be put up soon in North Cotabato,” Valero said. The official said another product that could play a major role in terms of the development of the region’s processing and manufacturing sector is rubber, which is mainly produced in North Cotabato. “We’re looking at getting investments into rubber processing and one thing that we could develop for the future is the possibility of eventually producing our own tire brand here,” he added.

Rivera overcome with emotion in Yankees farewell

The emotion finally got to Mariano Rivera on Thursday (Friday, PHL time). After playing it super-cool during his 19 years in Major League Baseball, his final game at Yankee Stadium proved too much. Baseball’s greatest closer was reduced to tears, sobbing uncontrollably on the mound as the enormity of the occasion hit him. And he was not alone. His teammates and the Yankees manager Joe Girardi were also overcome with raw emotion, as they embraced him on the field then in the dugout. In the stands, which were packed as the Yankees faithful came out to bid farewell to one of their greatest champions, more tears flowed. The crowd rose to their feet, chanting Rivera’s nickname “Mo” as more than tens of thousands of camera flashes lit up the Bronx. “It definitely was a magic moment,” said Rivera, who rose from poverty in his native Panama to be one of the most revered players in America’s favorite pasttime. When the game was over, the 43-yearold returned to the pitcher’s mound for one last time, scooping up a handful of dirt which he put in his pocket as the memories of his spectacular career came flooding back. “I was bombarded with emotions and feelings I couldn’t describe. Everything hit. I knew that was the last time, period,” he said. Girardi, his eyes still welling with tears long after the game had finished, told reporters: “This is as good as it gets. “It’s probably as special of a going-out for any player I’ve ever seen.” The raw emotion of Rivera’s farewell added a touch of real poignancy to a game that had not gone as planned for

the Yankees. If the baseball gods had been kinder, Rivera might have been playing in another World Series, clinching the victory himself with a flawless final inning pitch. But instead, there was nothing at stake for the Yankees because they had lost the previous day and were out of contention to make the playoffs. Their opponents, the Tampa Bay Rays, were still fighting for a wildcard so could not afford to join in the sentiment, and thrashed the Yankees 4-0. With the Yankees so far behind, Rivera did not have the chance to add to his record tally of 652 career saves. Normally he would not have pitched at all, but this was a special occasion for the last MLB player allowed to wear No. 42, the same number as Jackie Robinson, the first black player to compete in the majors. Girardi introduced Rivera into the game midway through the eighth inning. He entered the field, as he always does, as the strains of Metallica’s ‘Enter the Sandman’ - Rivera’s entrance song - blasted through the stadium’s sound system. Suddenly, the result of the game did not seem to matter. It was almost as though time stood still as Rivera produced some of his old magic, pitching an inning and a third. He gave up no hits and no runs. The Rays applauded him just as warmly and enthusiastically as the people in the stands. When his time was called, it came in an unexpected fashion that tugged at the heart strings. Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte, two of Rivera’s oldest friends, walked out on the mound together, to take him out of the game. Pettitte and Jeter both hugged him and it was only then that Rivera, who has been on a seemingly endless farewell tour since
