Contingency plan for OFWs in Taiwan ready: DFA By JOYCE ANN L. ROCAMORA
Rufus mourns death of Asia’s sprint queen Lydia de Vega THE Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) is mourning the death of retired Filipino sprint queen Lydia de Vega, its chairman, Cagayan de Oro City Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said. “We have lost a great athlete who was once called Asia’s fastest woman for ruling the 100-200-meter dash events. She did her country proud by bringing home multiple med-
als from competitions in the 1980s-1990s. A grateful nation is in grief,” he said. Rodriguez said De Vega won multiple gold and bronze medals in the Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games and Asian Athletics Championship from 1981 to 1991, and represented the country in the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics. She last competed in October 1994 in the
Manila-Fujian Games, where she won the 100-meter event, he said. “I had the privilege of cheering for her at the top of my voice in some of her international track events where she won gold medals, and stood proudly as our national anthem was played and the Philippine flag was raised as she stood victorious at the podium. I was then Region 10 PATAFA
Director,” Rodriguez added. “Maraming salamat Lydia de Vega sa karangalan na ibinigay mo sa bansa. Our prayers and condolences are with her family at this difficult time,” Rodriguez added. In behalf of PATAFA, the lawmaker thanked “all the kind souls” who supported De Vega while she was active in sports and in retirement.
MANILA – A contingency plan to ensure the safety of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Taiwan is in place, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Thursday. In a press briefing, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Eduardo Jose de Vega said the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) would implement this plan if necessary. “The truth is, there are always contingency plans in place, not just in China, or the Cross-Strait, but anywhere in the world. They have contingency plans in place for any kind of disaster,” he said. “Of course, there is the Manila Economic Cultural Office -- it’s not a DFA office, we don’t have diplomats there. They respond to the Office of the President-- but similar to our missions in mainland China and the rest of the world, they are in See PLAN, page 11
Million-peso plant featured in Kadayawan trade fair By RUDOLPH IAN ALAMA
DAVAO CITY (PIA) -- An ornamental palm worth one million pesos will be displayed for visitors at the Kadayawan Trade Fair which will be held at the parking area of SM City Davao. The plant owner Vivencio Gallego is the current president of the Mindanao Garden Club. “I imported it from Florida 15 years ago. You can see it at the exhibit area, yellow ang dahon niya at bihira kayo na makakita ng yellow ang dahon lahat (It has yellow leaves it is rare that you will find a plant that all the leaves are yellow),” Gallego said.
He said the exhibit will feature the best plants in Davao, among these include bonsai plants. For this year, Gallego said they will not be holding an exhibit contest. “Instead of an exhibit contest, we only have an exhibition of the best plants in Davao. We have the bonsai group which will display,” Gallego said. Aside from ornamental plants, the trade fair will also feature furniture, fruits and bahay kubo (huts). The exhibit will run from August 1 to August 31 and is part of the SM Malls (SM City Davao and SM Lanang Premiere) activities in time for Kadayawan. (PIA-11/ RG Alama)
