Miserable over her financial inability to buy a Bavarian Crème Donut from a donut store, Mer was about to star in one of the most inspiring business stories this country’s ever heard. Growing up on farmlands somewhere in the mountains of Claveria, Misamis Oriental, Mer Sudaria is the youngest child of a farmer and a market vendor. Living in remote, rural areas, life has not been particularly kind to Mer and to her family. However, her in-born resilience allowed her to be self-reliant especially towards her scholastic needs. After walking for 40 minutes a day just to get to school, she would sometimes sell pineapples and “santols” to classmates or simply exchange them for paper. These harsh situations were daily scenarios for Mer but in spite of all this, she became a valedictorian in elementary, breezed through high school, and eventually finished college. When she finished school in 2006, amidst family crises and mixing studies with work, Mer decided to move to places with better opportunities. With only P2,500 and all the faith she could possibly acquire, she sailed for Cebu without a single secure job waiting for her. Settling for substandard living quarters in Cebu, she immediately applied for a job in a call center company after hearing about its high salaries and good benefits. She got her heart broken however after she realized that she could never afford the application processes, causing a derailment in her plans which eventually led her to take a job as an SM bagger. Bearing with the dismal salary, the overwhelming expenses and the inability to send some money back home, Mer attempted again and again to apply for better jobs. Finally, despite her lack in English skills, Convergys hired her as a customer representative where she, using that resilience and determination once again, worked her way to being the top customer service rep. What Mer had on her mind? Success was finally within her reach! But apparently the Heavens had other plans for her. It was an invitation to a business orientation by a former call center supervisor that would introduce Mer to the world of Network Marketing—an arena where she realized that there were bigger things she could get and higher heights she could reach. Inspired by the story of William Chavez, a network marketing legend, Mer joined UNO, the premiere networking company in the country, as a part time business builder and for the first few months, her network was steadily growing.

Wylie Chavez, William’s older brother. He introduced himself as a businessman in the field of advertising, and offered to mentor her. Wylie emphasized the need for transforming her mindset from an employee’s to a businesswoman’s in order to achieve the results that she wanted. Though reluctant to accept, Mer eventually allowed Wylie to coach her. Slowly and steadily for the next few months, Coach Wylie assisted Mer’s gradual makeover, teaching her brand new concepts and ideas on financial literacy, speakership skills, and leadership abilities among others. This constant coaching progressively became one of the reasons why she would again rise up and become a well-respected leader in the industry. Fast forward a couple of years later and Mer’s already on the fast track, soaring high and mighty as an UNO millionaire and Top Earner! Cruising through highways and city streets in her brand new Hyundai Tucson, her network has already numbered in the thousands, spreading to six different cities in two major island groups with no signs of stopping! To top it all off, she has traveled to foreign countries such as Japan, Singapore and the United States—all paid for by the company! But if you ask her, the best rewards didn’t come from the money nor did it come from the fame. It came from helping other ordinary people, people very much like herself, people in need of change and people who also faced cruel situations. Mer has already reached a point in her business career where money and achievements no longer propel her actions. Her passion stems from her genuine desire to give back ten-fold what UNO has given her. She’s frequently giving training and coaching sessions, teaching new entrepreneurs around the country and where she goes, people flock to her to listen to her story. Looking back to the days where she had virtually nothing, Mer Sudaria is now living a life that’s free, a life that’s filled with faith and a life that’s worth emulating. Most of the time you can see her walking around carrying a box full of Bavarian Crème Donuts. Nothing is impossible for the heart that believes.

However, Mer made a crucial mistake; little did she realize that she was operating her business with the mindset of an employee. She was later overcome with doubts and, like most new businessmen and businesswomen, her enthusiasm slowly died down. All this changed when she received a text message from

Security Bank profit grows MID-SIZED Security Bank Corp. (Security Bank) saw profit rise 11% in the first quarter, supported by growth of its lending business and non-interest income. In a statement released over the weekend, Security Bank said it booked a net income of P1.2 billion in the first quarter, 11% more than the P1.1 billion recorded in the same period last year. This translated to a 13.18% returnon-equity, or net income earned as percent of stockholders’ investment. Security bank’s total lending portfolio grew by 21% to P119.2 billion in the quarter ending March. CRITICAL SUPPORT “In support of economic development, loans went to critical sectors such as power, utilities, infrastructure, wholesale and retail trade, food, agriculture and consumer goods,” Security Bank said in its statement. Similary, deposits grew by about 22% to P141.8 billion in the same period. The bank pointed out that “significant investments to increase its branc h

network” last year enabled the bank to “strengthen its core businesses and develop new businesses such as consumer lending.” As of end-March the bank had 172 branches nationwide, while Security Bank Savings -- its thrift bank arm -- had 38

branches. Security Bank’s non-interest income surged by 230% to P1.1 billion, with service charges, fees and commission rising by 60% and profit from trust activities increasing by 22%. “Gains from the trading portfolio also increased as the bank took advantage of the favorable market conditions,” Security Bank said. The bank’s operating expenses rose 45% to P1.7 billion due to branch network expansion in 2012 that resulted in more branches and employees and higher rental payments. “Our operating expenses and costto-income ratio reflect the impact of our investments in branch expansion. Cost discipline remains a priority and we aspire to maintain the favorable costto-income ratio comparisons relative to industry benchmarks,” the statement quoted Joselito E. Mape, Security Bank chief financial officer, as saying. The bank’s total resources grew by a fifth to P258.9 billion.

CEB offers PHP99 seats to Dubai for Oct - Dec travel The Philippines’ largest national flag carrier, Cebu Pacific (PSE:CEB) allows even more travelers to visit Dubai and Manila, with a PHP99 (AED100) seat sale from May 7 to 9, 2013. This is for travel from October 7 to December 31, 2013. CEB will launch direct daily flights between Manila and Dubai on October 7, 2013 . CEB will be the only Filipino carrier to fly direct to Dubai, which will be CEB’s first long haul destination. Daily flights from Manila to Dubai are scheduled to depart at 4:40PM (Manila time), while flights from Dubai to Manila depart at 11:10PM (Dubai time). CEB’s Manila-Dubai flights will utilize an Airbus A330-300 aircraft, scheduled for delivery this June 2013. Guests can also enjoy WiFi connectivity inflight. With a base fare of PHP99 (AED100), an all-inclusive one-way ticket amounts to approximately PHP7,500 (AED717).

This is inclusive of country taxes, 15 kilos baggage allowance, meals, admin fee and fuel surcharges. After the seat sale, lowest year-round base fares start at P6,999. “We know how important the holidays are for Filipinos, so we are offering fares up to 98.5% less than our lowest year-round fares to Dubai. With Cebu Pacific’s PHP99 seat sale, guests can now plan their vacations in Dubai or in the Philippines on the lowest fare possible,” said CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog. “CEB is proud to be the only Filipino carrier to fly direct to Dubai. Instead of multiple stops and connecting flights, our passengers can reach Dubai or Manila in just nine hours,” she added. CEB is also slated to launch flights from Cebu to both Masbate (June 1, 2013) and Taipei (July 5, 2013). It operates

The Department of Social Welfare and Development on May 6 warned the public against a new wave of scam text messages claiming they have won hundreds of thousands of pesos from the “President Noy-Noy Aquino Foundation.” “We have already issued earlier warnings before but there are really people out to mislead so let us all be vigilant,” said DSWD secretary Corazon Soliman. The Department said it learned of the scam after many callers informed its Pantawid Pamilya National Program Monitoring Office (NPMO).

It said the text message claims the recipient won P950,000 from the “President Noy-Noy Aquino Foundation 4Ps Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program.” Recipient were then asked to text their “complete name, age, address, work.” “The DSWD emphasizes that this is not true because the Department does not hold raffle promos or draws,” the DSWD said. It urged recipients to report the text to the nearest DSWD office or text to the Pantawid Pamilya Grievance Text Hotline 0918-912-2813.

TESDA-X joins Labor Day Walk for a Cause TESDA Region 10 staff headed by Dir. Edgar A. Sales joined the “Lakaw Ta Para Sa Bata sa Aminahang Mindanao” fun walk as part of the 111th Labor Day Celebration. Around fifty (50) staff from TESDA -10 residing within Cagayan de Oro City and nearby municipalities joined the regional simultaneous walk for a cause initiated by DOLE through the leadership of the Regional Child Labor Council Members and its Chair DOLE-X’s Regional Director Johnson G. Cañete. TESDA-X, as active member of the Regional Child Labor Council (RCLC-X), expressed its support and enjoined the TechVoc stakeholders to join the walk and do its share to prevent the proliferation of child laborers. The registration fee which cost only P20.00 will be used to fund the livelihood training program of the 246 potential child laborers who are Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries and the purchase of school uniforms and school supplies to some working children scattered around Northern Mindanao. In his statement, the TESDA-X OIC Regional Director Edgar A. Sales emphasized the significance of the event in making a dent for children who are forced to leave the school to find income. Hence, he encouraged all Tech-

I See Change The election fever has come and gone. The campaign mayhem has ended and the political jingles and mudslinging are now a recent history. After all these, what have we got? Change has come before us in the form of new leaders bringing beacons of hope and a promise of a better tomorrow. But will these really become a reality? Will we ever get to taste what we longed for? Being a skeptic is fine but let us first provide

them chances to gain our trust and prove their worth. Indeed, change happens in a span of time. Sometimes glitches occur along the way but if the vision is clear, the journey will be worth the ride. People are always hesitant about change. It makes them feel unsure of the many possibilities that they might encounter. In every flicker of hope, there is a spark of uncertainty. In the case of the victory of Hon. Oca Moreno over incumbent Mayor Emano, this was the

change that most of the people aspired for. The people longed for new governance by another leader in the hopes of making Cagayan de Oro better than it is now. I believe the time has finally arrived for true economic growth and dynamic leadership where people and the government can work together for the common good. As for those who dread the changing of guards, let us give the new administration the benefit of the doubt while still keeping vigilant. We put leaders in power thus they are always accountable to us. We have the power to realize change. We may not feel it at this very moment but when we all gather our efforts and rally what is right and just, we will all prevail over those who are in position. We have done it and we can do it again as long as we remain to be the keepers of truth and freedom. Change is on its way and we must take part of this change. We should not let the burden lie on the leaders alone. We have the moral obligation and responsibility to carry on our duties as citizens. The recent election was just a portion of our tasks as believers of democracy. There are still so many things to do and we can only claim real victory if we ourselves are empowered to bring about change. I believe the Filipino people have slowly become enlightened but there is still work to be done. It is therefore our collective mission to join hands with the government and get things done. I say, enough with vengeance. Stop the hate and finger-pointing and better do something. Like what the great Mahatma Gandhi reminded us, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.”

The Treasure Inside of Us “We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.” ~ Buddha I have always been fascinated by the idea that a treasure lies buried deep within us. There is truth to this belief. This truth is proven by nature; a giant tree lies buried in the seed, and a majestic eagle lies dormant in the egg. What Alladin's cave of riches lie hidden inside of us? The money-grubber will be disappointed, but the wisdomseeker will be captivated. Our treasure chest contains this ineffable knowledge: that everything we need to be happy, to live in contentment and peace, is already inside of us! Isn't this realization worth its weight in gold? But buried treasure is useless unless we find it. The mountain of books I have perused sketches a map that could lead us to this elusive cache of valuables. We are familiar with the statements, "What a man thinketh so he is," or "Thoughts make the man". Our mind is the master, and beautiful feelings are the essential character of our natural state of mind. We are born with happy, loving thoughts. Observe a baby or a toddler. Aren't they spontaneously laughing and hugging, trusting and loving? That's our natural, pure state of being. But as we travel through life, the bumps and detours we hurdle on the road is our initiation to stress, insecurity and pain. We develop a thought system that stores these painful memories and perceptions. It's similar to a program in a computer where we store accumulated data. In our personally programmed thought system, we record our experiences, and what other people teach us about life. Most of what we keep are the harmful, unfavourable lessons which produce gloomy emotions. They block out the good feelings and inspiration that come from our natural state of mind. Our emotions are created by our thoughts. The next time you feel miserable or angry or fearful, observe where your thoughts are coming from. They are produced by a programmed thought system which you create, based on your

negative observations. To allow them a foothold is like allowing misery to become a part of your family. Quickly replace them with optimistic, cheerful thoughts that bring happy feelings. Thinking is an ability of the intellect, and not our reality. This truth is so liberating, it can save us many years of tears. Our thoughts live in our mind. They have no existence in real life. How foolish we are, if we take our negative thoughts seriously and suffer them to mess up our lives. Yet we do it all the time. When our partner is unaccountably late, is not our mind screaming of infidelity or injury? At DXRU Radio Ultra, a woman came to us asking for help with her hospital bill. She was violently beaten by her husband, simply because he saw her talking to another man. Didn't the young UP student commit suicide when her parents couldn't pay her tuition fee? As of this writing, the candidates are still in their last minute frenzy to win the voters. And, there may be a few of them experiencing a panic attack. It is said that at least 20% of the general population experience a panic attack in their entire adulthood. This means, this is not something that is uncommon at all. Just a few weeks back, a very good friend of mine, called me up so early in the morning, crying and very distraught. She felt like she couldn’t move her body and even the very thought of taking a bath scares her. A panic attack is a sudden episode of intense fear that is often unexpected, and can happen anytime, anywhere. It affects women more than men, and the average age of incidence is said to be between 15-19 years of age. Patients that usually come to medical attention are those in the 40 to 50’s. People who have a family history, like a sibling, a parent, or a relative diagnosed to have a panic attack, is more likely to experience it. In the presence of significant stress like death or illness of a loved one (which is true to this particular friend of mine, recent death of her husband, and father in a span of 4 months), or, when there is a major life changing

event (like having a baby or loss of a job), history of sexual abuse or trauma, one is more prone to experiencing panic attack. It is important to understand that a single episode is more of a panic attack. But, when the attack happens several times over an extended period of time, then, it becomes a disorder. Differentiating one from the other may have bearing in terms of treatment choice and duration. Remember that a panic attack or disorder can impact one’s quality of life. Imagine one who fears even the act of bathing, or riding an elevator, develops specific phobias, which becomes a cycle and this in turns can hamper one’s day to day activities. A person experiencing an attack would feel like there is an impending doom, often described as something bad is about to happen! There is that pounding or racing heart beat, chest pains, light headedness, nausea, which are actually sometimes misdiagnosed as a heart attack. We used to get these kind of patients rushed to the emergency room at the middle of the night and it would do well to examine them thoroughly and still perform basic laboratory tests like an ECG, in order to rule out the more serious problem which is life threatening like that of a heart

All I have to do is share my lesson in Genyo to the specific students and voila the students just have to log in to their accounts in Genyo then they can review the lesson again at home with their parents. I always wanted the parents of my students to get involved so that somehow they can check if their kids are doing it right while practicing. Singing may seem easy at first glance and some may think that it’s just voice coming out from the mouth but it isn’t, in fact Science is greatly involved here. The

attack. Other symptoms may include stomach upset, difficulty of breathing, numbness or tingling of the extremities, hot flushes and even trembling. It is a MUST, that, once a patient is diagnosed as such, that, he/she is not only assured (reassurance is sometimes not enough for them), but, that necessary diagnostics (only the basic tests will do- in order to be cost effective too), to rule out other medical conditions , is performed. It would help the patient, if he/ she is allowed to acknowledge their fears, and the intensity of the symptoms, and making them understand that what they may be going through is not life threatening. Drugs or cognitive behaviour therapy, singly or in combination would be the treatment of choice for panic attacks. If one were at risk for this particular illness, it is a good thing to know that there are a few things one can do, in order to minimize or prevent its occurrence, like, avoidance of alcohol, illicit drugs. Exercise or keeping one’s self physically active, or even doing meditation like yoga exercises, and refraining from caffeinated drinks and having a good night’s rest, can be beneficial to one who would want to give a GO to that wonderful life!

Retirement and Inflation Do you plan to retire someday? Whether it is by choice or by force, whenever that retirement comes, most people say they plan to. But have you started with strategies to get there as planned? Most say they haven't thought about it. Some people have this big dream in life – to be able to retire earliest and at the youngest possible age. As Jim Rohn says, if you'd like to do what you want to in life as long as you can, then you'd better be doing the things that you have to as quick as you can! Accumulate enough money by then so you need not worry that much about money again. For the detractors, money is of course not the most important thing in this world. But as Zig Ziglar would say, our need for it is as close to oxygen! Among the most important factors to consider when projecting realistic future retirement figures is the increasing cost of living due to inflation. For the past 30 years, Philippine inflation rate averaged 6% per annum. Granting you are now age 45 and desires to "retire" at age 60, you have 15 years to go. At 6% projected annual inflation, if you look forward to living a lifestyle based on a current monthly cost of living of PhP50,000 (PhP600,000 annually), then expect to spend approximately PhP120,000 each month (PhP1,440,000 annually) by the time you retire! Then we ask: How long do you expect to last? Based on your personal life goals as well as your family medical history, would you probably last until age 75? Having this projected scenario, by the time you retire at age 60, what assets do you think should you have accumulated by then to support your 15 years of retirement? How much should its worth be? Accurate mathematical computations can simulate these projections. Based on the law of averages, a friend once shared this perception. Of all the resources at our disposal, the most important three seems to be time, energy and money. The usual story goes this way. In our younger years, we have so much time and energy, yet we don't have that much money. In our mid-life years, we still have energy and (if we are industrious enough) our personal assets begin to accumulate, but it seems like we have so little time to do all the things we would like to do. In our later years, we have time (and hopefully, we still have money), yet our energy is already on its way down. From this observation, one last very important question goes: When retirement comes and your energy has waned, do you expect to be able to support yourself with your own money, or would you like to go through the struggle of being dependent to someone else? These are questions worth seriously pondering. Start creating a plan to support the future and senior you. Your future is in your hands. Do it now!

I now slightly deflect from my default interview format, and with good cause - KaapiN’s self-titled 5-track EP (May 2013). The two-man electro-popping team of Michael Nuesca (Vocal Orchestra, Glockens, Melodica) and Rotsanjani Mojica (Beats, Glitch, Synths, Noise) tags this recent release as “ambient electronic experimental glitch”, perhaps as an effort to pin down the stellar, a cursory hats-off to the genre precursors, and hopefully make it more accessible to us, mere mortals. My curmudgeonly alter-ego is turned off by this, my own, heady enthusiasm but there are small discoveries that deserve high praise. Kaapin is 15.2 minutes of time travel through alterna-experimental music history, intelligent and highly referential, even the cover image is reminiscent of a Diane Arbus’ Boy with Toy Grenade. Imagine Cocteau or Aphex Twins in a picnic with Ryuichi Sakamoto, fresh off studio work for Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia in 1986. Rob Fisher and Pete Byrne of Naked Eyes come over, slinging along a Fairlight CMI sampling synthesizer 1979. Mirah and Psapp Cosy hear about this shindig and crash the party. Skrillex does not get an invitation but is patronized behind his back. These guys picnic till it looks like rain, and the sound of this imagined fun-time in the sun becomes Kaapin. The big guy in the wolfie-snuffaluffagus mask in the Kaapin handmade CD sleeve is Rotsanjani Mojica, synth magician and self-proclaimed recluse. I have known Jani since the mid-90s, when I was a panicking first-gigger too nervous to right tune my own guitar. Guy in plaid flannel Jani was one of few already with the tinker tools back then, early sign of his deeply committed relationship with the musical craft. He lent me his tuner, saw I didn’t know what to with it, fixed the strings himself. Fast forward, several groups and collaborations later, including a performance involving an egg beater, a guitar, and amplifier, Jani is now main sound guy for KaapiN, responsible for a slew of trippy sounds in “Movements”, “Taxi Taxi”, “Freedom”, “Everyone’s the Same”, and “Hear Me”.

This line holds true for Jonathan ‘Onat’ Neri – one of the most experienced and decorated photographers in Mindanao. Just like his idol, Johnny Depp, he is one of the more charismatic individuals in this island nation. Name the style you want and he can deliver it with flair like no other.

The Rise For an artist wiggling his way through the rigors of the academe, it all started in a campus publication as the four corners of the office and the monthly paper became Onat’s personal canvass. For a mind filled with ideas and visions, it was the perfect start. For years, he created funny comics and masterful layouts. He then ventured to the world of photography. The real fun began when he held his first camera. Together with his friends, he started

earning money working on various small-time projects. Even when his group never really clicked, he still persevered and continued to improve his craft. He found inspiration in different forms. Plankton.B have seen a large number of global infections in the past 90 days. “The new advertising kits we are monitoring suggest that the authors behind this are working very hard to remain undetected,” said David Maciejak, senior researcher for Fortinet’s FortiGuard Labs. “It’s also possible that Newyear and Plankton are being written by the same author, but being maintained separately in order to generate more infections.” Both pieces of malware are embedded into various applications and have the ability to display advertisements, track users through the phone’s unique

IMEI number, and modify the phone’s desktop. “The surge in Android adware can most likely be attributed to users installing what they believe are legitimate applications that contain the embedded adware code,” said Guillaume Lovet, Senior Manager at FortiGuard Labs. “It suggests that someone or some group has been able to monetize these infections, most likely through illicit advertising affiliate programs.” Users can protect themselves by paying close attention to the rights asked by an application at the point of installation. It is also recommended to download mobile applications that have been highly rated and reviewed.
