wedish retail giant H&M Hennes and Mauritz, Inc. has opened its 18th store in the Philippines at Ayala Centrio Mall in Cagayan de Oro City.
Over a thousand excited shoppers queued as early as the day before to be the first to see only its second store in Mindanao after Davao. H&M Cagayan de Oro has more or less 1,500 square meters of store space and opens regularly from 10am-9pm. It carries a full assortment of H&M products including ladies, men’s, kids, shoes, accessories and lingerie, and also has complete sports, denim and underwear departments for both men and ladies. CHEZ Marie Bar Café and Restaurant, the startup which became a stunning overnight success after it opened its doors in December 2014, decided to open a new branch uptown last week. And so the new Chez Marie branch at SM City Cagayan de Oro was blessed and inaugurated much to the delight of the people living nearby. Uptown Cagayan de Oro, long regarded
as the new growth area of the city, has already been eyed by Chez Marie proprietor Maribel Gargar for the expansion of her business as early as the middle of this year. “We have lots of uptown customers who come to our Divisoria outlet and inquire on when should we open a branch in their area. This is our answer at last to all their queries,” Gargar said.
Gargar’s Chez Marie business started as a hobby. She used to intently view and observe the late German Moreno’s recipes in the defunct show Negosiyete. Long to be a fan of French cuisine, Gargar then infused what she had learned from the TV show and developed French-inspired recipes. And so Chez Marie was born. The ability to hear is one of the specific gifts that our Creator gave us. Our fragile blue planet is surrounded by a thin layer of gases only a few kilometers high. Only this atmosphere is the reason why sound waves can spread through the air. Everything behind this atmosphere is
ruled by the sheer endless vacuum of outer space, where galaxies and stars explode and implode in impenetrable silence. According to the biblical narrative, the world began when God broke through this deadly quiet: “And God said: Let there be light!” (Genesis 1:1). God spoke - and light and life resulted from His audible voice. Because life was created by the word, it depends on the word. That is why it is in the nature of every person to listen. Like a parabolic mirror, our
souls are created to listen to the eternal space of the hereafter, to try and sense whether a word, a sound or a voice is trying to reach us from there, in order to fill us with meaning. I love music. I can’t live without. Hold on, this is not one of my earlier columns in this paper. But from time to time, I need to express myself if it comes to this topic. And, I know, that Filipinos love big tunes with great words and beautiful melodies, especially, when it comes to classical music.

FOR centuries, the Badjaos have been seafarers around Mindanao, living a nomadic life in the waters surrounding the island. Thus, when some of them decide to settle inland, they are being scorned and looked down by the mainlanders. This would ultimately drive the Badjaos in squalid settlements. Cagayan de Oro City is not exempted.
Through the decades, the Badjaos have been living like this. We see them begging in street corners, on the docks at the port and virtually every nook of the city’s main thoroughfares. It is in this premise that a group calling itself as the Psychosocial Association of the Philippines (PSAP) Cagayan de Oro chapter will hold a benefit concert this November
12 at 7:00 p.m. at Chris. Coffee.Cuisine inside Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club. All proceeds of the show go directly to programs aimed at uplifting the lives of the Badjaos living in Cagayan de Oro. Guest performers will be led by Mayor Oscar Moreno and fellow philanthropists-friends Merle del Fierro-Adaza, Glenn Bañez, Ophelia Lacre, Roger Villazorda, Jason and May Anne Adaza. For the amount of P2,000, you will get to listen the voice of these nontraditional performers who are professionals in their respective fields. At the same time you will also have the opportunity to help the Badjaos who have called Cagayan de Oro their home.
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Twenty-point four (20.4) percent of children less than five years old in Northern Mindanao are underweight as of 2015 or 2.8 percent higher than the 17.6 percent posted in the 2013 results. This and other results of the 2015 Updating of the Nutritional Status of Filipino Children were revealed in a forum organized by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) last Thursday. Of the malnourished children, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental have the highest number at 22.3 percent followed by Bukidnon (19.5 percent). There was tremendous decrease of underweight children in Misamis Occidental (from 25.4 percent to only 15.8 percent) but even this could not pull up the overall regional figures. In the same biannual survey, it was also discovered that 27.6 percent of children between five to ten years old in Region 10 are malnourished and 7.3 percent of tweens between ten to 19 yeas old are obese. Eight-point four (8.4) percent of adults in the same region
have chronic energy deficiency. Meanwhile, it was also found out that 74.4 percent of infants in Northern Mindanao were breastfed within an hour after they were born. Fifty-nine point five (59.5) percent of these would continue exclusive breastfeeding after five months from birth. Fortynine point seven (49.7) percent of these babies immediately underwent screening for congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrena hyperplasia, phenylketonuria, G6PD, galactosemia and maple syrup urine disease after they were born. Seventyfive point seven (75.7) percent of them were fully immunized by the time they reach two years old. And 83.1 percent were given Vitamin A supplementation. Sevntytwo point five (72.5) percent of the kids here were also dewormed. The FNRI report likewise showed that Northern Mindanao significantly had a lower total food intake compared to the national estimate. Inake of all food groups was lower in Northern Mindanao except for cereal, starchy tubers and vegetables
compared to the national level. Twenty-two point three percent of adults in the region experience high blood pressure, ranking fifth of the 14 regions nationwide although it ranked 13th in the prevalence of high cholesterol among adults. Northern Mindanao also has 16.2 percent of the adult population as smokers. And 45.4 percent of the adult residents here consume alcohol. The 2015 Updating of the Nutritional Status of Filipino Children was culled from a combination of the following: anthropmometric nutrition survey, clinical and health survey, dietary assessment survey, infant and young child and maternal nutrition survey, socio-economics and food security survey, government program participation survey, measurement of physical growth, face-to-face interview, measurement of blood pressure and one-day food weighing. It was done from September to November last year across Mindanao. A total of 12,047 households in the island participated in the survey.

Starting a new chapter in Cagayan de Oro’s history

hampions and stakeholders of the Cagayan de Oro Historical & Cultural Commission opened a new chapter in the city’s history with the official launch of Forum Kagay-anon 390 last 27 October 2016. Forum Kagay-anon 390 sets in a motion a series of events leading to next year, 2018, which will approximately mark three centuries and nine decades of the city’s founding as a settlement in the area now occupied by the St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral and Gaston Park.
The two-day kick off started with the ribbon-cutting for Taboo as Kabilin Thursday, 27 October where books and manuscripts detailing Cagayan de Oro’s storied past were exhibited at Gaston Park. This was immediately followed by a Paso as Kabilin where Hiscom Commissioners and Stakeholders toured the city’s four museums, Plaza Divisoria and the Cathedral-Gaston Park area. The next day, 28 October 2016, marked the lowering of the time capsule and ground breaking for a
new Cagayan de Oro Museum building which will have a storage area for relics and archives of the city’s storied past. Hiscom Champions City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno, former Mayor Constantino G. SSS supports lawmakers in pursuing meaningful pension reforms The Social Security System (SSS) has expressed support for lawmakers in addressing the need for meaningful pension reforms to ensure the long-term sustainability of the pension fund. Newly-appointed Social Security Commission Chairman
Amado D. Valdez, former dean of the University of the East College of Law, said that SSS management is supportive of a sustainable pension increase anchored on viable funding support mechanisms being threshed out in the House of Representatives
(HoR) and the Senate in consultation with the SSS actuarial experts. “We understand the need for higher SSS pensions. However, merely mandating to grant an across-theboard pension increase without any mention of how exactly the system will sustain it over
the long term may not suffice,” Valdez said. Lawmakers are studying a total of 13 different bills currently filed in the HoR and another six bills in the Senate. The bills offered no source of funding to sustain the additional benefits which amount to billions of pesos every
