CdeO’s Karla Jamodiong Estorba Among the Top 14 finalists for Ms. Sophie Paris Philippines 2014 GP: How did you become the candidate for Miss Sophie Paris? Tell us more about your experience so far • Being one of the Sophie models gave me the idea and the opportunity of joining Miss Sophie Paris. I experienced the screening part when Sophie Paris Cagayan de Oro did a search for a candidate to represent the city for the Miss Sophie Mindanao 1 pageant. Luckily, I was chosen to be CDO’s candidate. The Miss Sophie regional pageant which was held in Butuan City last August and fortunately I won the title of being “Miss Sophie Paris Mindanao 1”. With that accolade, it made me the representative or rather the candidate of Sophie Paris in Northern Mindanao for the national search for the Miss Sophie 2014. GP: How do you feel now that you're in a big pageant? Do previous experiences give a big part in handling school and other duties?
The search for Ms. Sophie Paris Philippines 2014 continues as we present to you the top 14 finalists who will battle it out on coronation night! Vote for your favorite candidate and help them win the Ms. Social Media Special Award and add up points in their overall pageant rating!
• The feeling is undeniably great and overwhelming that I am going to represent the whole Northern Mindanao and get a chance to compete in this big pageant in Manila. Indeed experiences are the best teachers and great guides in pursuing your tasks both in school and other duties. GP: Why do you love to use Sophie Paris products? • I really love using Sophie products because of its high quality and I can never question the trend and class in their fashion ideas. Elegant, refined and fashionable, the brand speaks for itself. GP: What would be the 1 favorite product from Sophie? • My favorite product in Sophie is the “Magic Pink”. It enhances my natural beauty and gives me the confidence I need especially in facing a big crowd.

ARE YOU ON THE RIGHT TRACK?

any times we compare our life with a way. We talk about a "human life way". We describe a determined human such as, "He's on the right track (way)". We must make our tracks, but we will prepoved not to take a path across a rice-field. We learn that there are many ways to solve problems. We also don't want to stand in other people's way. Sometimes we prefer to keep out of someone's way. Sometimes, we plan already to get someone out of our ways. It just happened in my surroundings. Most of all, we do try to find the golden middle course. "Hay nako" - that's the hardest task in life! Many different ways have been offered to us during our whole life. Whole life? I am 61now. Whole life? Mmmmh, let's wait and see and have a cup of tea! How can we be able to choose the right way? The correct one? Which signs at our way can be trusted blindly? These are urgent and vital questions for all of us, and, during this time, important like never before. In the pasty traditions and custom demands have been produced our ways unquestionable. Nowadays permanently, constantly and continually must we think about decisions and looks for the correct plan - but, more and more alone! Today's man is like a ship's captain. This ship contains of solid iron. The compass needle is no more able to show the Northern direction as expected, because of the ship's iron inflexible
body. You only have one choice: look up to the stars and study their guiding support. A very wise idea by German atom-physicist Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976). We are all happy and proud while having the perfect means at our disposal. On the other hand, our blindness allows us to intricate and confused destinations in life, aims, goals and objectives. We all know the headlines of our daily life, which always turn us away and distract our views to the stars - means to say: to God. - Coup d'Etat (ignoring) of human values; - Total (modern?) emancipation; - Longing mostly -or only- for earthly luck on the way of all fl Many of these headlines are reality already. But this reality stays behind our real dreams and illusions. I am the way - not only a traffic sign or a shepherd without responsibility or a "mailbox-doctor a la Doctor Love-. I am the way - the only right way. His deeds colored our fates. Let's keep our eyes open for the most important signs at our way, such as - Ready to help the unprotected and defenseless weak; - Struggle for freedom and justice; - Commitment of peace; - Most of All: Love, which doesn't calculate and count - love without measurements, boundaries and limits.

Mapawa Trail Run 2014 With a venue that can take your breath away and a strong trail running community, R.O.X. is proud to have headlined the roster of sponsors for this year’s Mapawa Trail Run in Cagayan de Oro City.
T
o further promote the beauty of Cagayan De Oro, R.O.X. has made it one of the locations for its stores, which aim to assist travelers, nature lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts on their outdoor endeavors while also sparking interest in shoppers who are yet to discover the beauty of the country’s natural resources. As such, R.O.X. is happy to have taken a big part in this year’s Mapawa Run – its second time to sponsor the event. To be held on October 26 at the Mapawa Nature Park in Cagayan De Oro City, the reason behind R.O.X.’s big push for this event was having seen the beauty of the outdoors in CDO, as well as the growing community of trail runners, it was just natural for it to rally behind such an endeavor. In addition, having seen the passion of the people behind Mapawa Nature Park and its Trail Run, there was no way that they would miss becoming a part of such a great cause. The Mapawa Trail Run is a trail running event hosted inside the protected 2,500-hectare Mapawa Nature Park. What used to be a private property of the late VicePresident Emmanuel Pelaez and his family, the Mapawa
Nature Park used to be a farm and a vacation place. Later on, the family decided to convert the property to a forest reserve. It now houses a variety of endemic plants, birds, and other wildlife. It has also been said to be the reason why the Malasag area of CDO was protected during the Typhoon Sendong. The Mapawa Nature Park is open to the public to enjoy different activities like rappelling, trekking, camping, horseback riding, wildlife observation, among many others. Characterized as a “green race”, event organizers did not provide paper cups for the race, which is why runners were expected to bring their own hydration bottles. The Mapawa Run offered distances of 11K, 22K, and 42K. Interested participants may register in R.O.X. CDORFC, Manila Hapons battle in the 1st Higalaay Rugby Challenge Cup It’s been a year since the sport of Rugby was born in the City of Golden Friendship and Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club (CDO RFC) celebrates its first anniversary with a series of special events happening for three Saturdays of this month. CDO RFC held its community outreach program dubbed “Help Change the Life of a Child”, a feeding and sports therapy activity for Boys Town Lumbia, September 13, and on Saturday, September 20, CDO RFC shall host back-to-back events with the “Juniors Flag Rugby Games” at 9 a.m. and the “Higalaay Rugby Challenge Cup” at 1 p.m at the Xavier University High School Campus Field. Formed by Coach Noel Villa, a full blooded Filipino who grew up in the UK, CDORFC has already shown some promise after winning the Shield Division Championship during its debut at the 2014 Philippine National Games in May this
year. CDO RFC’s first anniversary will also be the birth of its flagship event, the first “Higalaay Rugby Challenge Cup”, and has invited a Manila-based International touring Japanese team to play against the Team in local soil. The Manila Hapons, one of the strongest Rugby teams in the Philippines and a regular in social rugby tournaments in and around Asia. Their Team Captain is Masayuki Sekiguchi who recently qualified to represent our National Team, the Philippine Volcanoes. Coach Villa is proud to have kicked-off Rugby in Cagayan de Oro City, he said “It’s an absolute honor to have established a very promising Team and have coached it from the very beginning, even more now that I call Cagayan de Oro City as my home. There were a lot of challenges putting this team together but we have somehow managed to get the City into the
map of the sport in the Philippines in a short period of time. These players didn’t know anything about the sport and learned Rugby only through my training program.” Villa also has high hopes for the team and the city’s growing affection for the sport of Rugby, “I’m hoping that the Team will grow even more when the locals get to see us play, especially with a great Team such as the Manila Hapons. I’m sure our local team will learn a lot from them and we are very excited to welcome them here. It’s also a chance for the City to show that we can hold such tournaments and if all goes to plan, CDO City will hold its First International Invitational Rugby Tournament next year. Taympers!
o you still remember that famous line when we used to play when we were kids? When we felt we are put on a spot during kid’s play we say, Taympers! (Time First!), it is a quick response to momentarily escape from an impending doom. In real life, no matter how much we say Taympers or when we get older we say Taym sa, we eventually have to face the music and move against the current all the way to where our individual journeys lead us. I got reminded of this kiddie expression while I was trying to finish so many tasks and felt I just need to have a
breather. So I said to myself, Taympers. Let’s sit down and gently pause. Time and again, we wanted to ask the heavens for time to magically stop so we can do things on our own pace and our way but the more we wish for it to happen, the more time becomes seemingly shorter. There are upcoming events heading our way, the inevitable Christmas season, the coming school year, the dreaded Valentine’s Day and the much anticipated summer season. As much as we want to keep some of these at bay or want them to all rush in altogether, we just can’t, they will just pop in due time.
Deadlines, meetings, parties and so many other activities shoving themselves right at you is a bit overwhelming so a Taympers may be a temporary hold-off but we have to start moving again. The only way to live is to keep moving. For those who are experiencing the same frantic world I am revolving in right now, breathe. Say, Taympers. Pause. Then spring back up. We need to have a short stop once in a while so we can go even further. Life’s truly like that. Enjoy the remaining days of September and have a wonderful day ahead!

mong all the events that I had the privilege of serenading, weddings were and will always be my favorite. Why? Aside from making it as my “breather” or stress reliever, singing for weddings give me joy when I see the happy faces of family members, a groom’s teary eyes as the bride begins to walk down the aisle and witnessing a couple’s lifetime vows. These are some of the captured moments in my thoughts of which I also treasure because it reminds me that one day I will be a bride too in His perfect time. Each wedding is utterly unique as it reflects the combined personalities of the couple. The uniqueness is such a beauty when we see it on their wedding day but the process behind it can be stressful unknowingly for the guests. That’s

It was an ALL MINDANAOAN DESIGNERS Summit wherein 13 local CdeO designers and 13 equally talented designers from different key cities of Mindanao showcased their 2014 Holiday Collections.
The 3 Day Summit was a feast for the eyes for all fashionistas of the city of golden friendship. August 8, It opened with the Mindanaoan Inspired collection from the OFDG (Oro Fashion Designers Guild) and the DA (Designers Assembly). Then, followed by MENSWEAR from OFDG and DA and the premier show by Ororama. August 9, started with the collections of the Guest Designers from the cities of Butuan, Ozamis, Iligan and Davao.

2014 PSC/POC Games SHIELD DIVISION Champions, Cagayan de Oro Rugby Football Club (CDORFC) celebrates their first anniversary on a different note as they gave back to the children of Boys Town orphanage. CDORFC the celebration at Primavera Residences, Coach Noel Villa and the rest of the team gave the children a memorable time. Food, games and entertainment were provided to the kids during the half day event and were later on given gifts by the Rugby Club, Primavera Residences and other kind hearted individuals. Ecstatic beyond compare, seeing the children have so much fun with everyone was a sight to behold. On September 20, 2011 (Saturday) the Cagayan de Oro Rugby club will be facing off against the Manila Hapons Rugby Club for the Rugby Higalaay Challenge Cup at Xavier University High School, which is still part of the club’s anniversary celebration.

GP: How did you become Fayeed Tan in the music scene? FT: I started out like any musician, simple with almost nothing. I didn’t know how to record but I knew how to play a guitar. Basically, I just knew how to make music. Even I didn’t know how to write back then, I had melodies that I haven’t heard on radios already in my head. It started slowly from high school when I wrote a few melodies and then worked my way up to writing a full song with lyrics. I started experimenting with the simplest of gears. With old karaoke speakers and an old computer just to record my songs, I felt the highest euphoria when recording an original for the first time. As time passed by, I invested more on gears which was capable of recording a whole album with lyrics. The album was released in the country and turned out okay. When I started writing instrumental music and that was when I discovered youtube. I stepped out of the band scene and stepped into youtube. And that’s where everything started. Youtube gave me the ability to reach a crowd that not many musicians can reach, reaching not only in Cagayan de Oro but everywhere in the country and all over the globe. I’ve started from the simplest of beginnings to my present day humble achievements. It’s not big but I’m happy about it. GP: How does music work for you now that you’ve established yourself in the bigger scene? FT: Music for me is not something to earn
from, especially here in the Philippines it’s quite hard. I treat music as a way for me to release stress. Music makes me happy. It’s what I do and It is what I love doing. After my day’s work I go straight to the music room. Even when I’m not writing, I’ll just play. GP: Any future plans? FT: I’ve been getting requests on albums and a DVD about lessons. Not that sure yet, but I’ll be making more videos. If ever I’ll have a gig, I’ll let everyone know. GP: A short message to aspiring musicians and to your followers? FT: Don’t stop playing. Stay happy and be happy. What drives my music is happiness. I am always happy and I appreciate a lot of things. Happiness can become inspiration. Inspiration can make melodies. Melodies can make music. With most of his followers from outside the country, he was discovered by big musician websites such as guitarmasterclass.net and bobbysbackingtracks.com. These Websites approached him and wanted him to be a music teacher online and hire him to play sessions. Guthrie Govan, a band member of the Aristocrats and was part of the British rock band Asia, knows Fayeed and has seen some of his videos. Jamming online with the top musicians through youtube, Fayeed Tan is now making waves globally.

Primavera joins RealEXPO 2014 Multi-awarded eco-friendly property showcased in Real Estate and Auto Expo
T
he economy in Cagayan de Oro City has grown by leaps and bounds and this could be seen through the booming real estate and automobile industry. One event to showcase this growth took place last September 12 – 14, 2014 at the Rotunda of Limketkai Mall. Dubbed BPI Housing Madness with Family Auto Loan and BusinessWeek Mindanao RealEXPO, the event was a partnership between the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and the BusinessWeek Mindanao (BWM) media group. IlocosNorte You won’t find either Sitio Remedios or Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in any listings of ancestral houses or heritage villages in the Philippines. That’s because the jury is still out regarding such “heritage resorts” as Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar bills its collection of old houses from around Luzon, or “heritage villages” as Sitio Remedios prefers to classify its own aggregation of old Ilokano houses. Basically, these two places are similar in the sense that they are collections of old houses bodily transferred from their original sites to a new location where they are meant to simulate how Filipinos lived in a typical village during a certain period in the past. Two heritage conservationists typify the opposing views on such initiatives. "I was there once. I guess this is possible only in Ilocos where parts of old houses are commonly sold (and the owner Dr. Joven Cuanang is an antique collector),” noted Dr. Antonio J. Roa Montalvan II, curator of the A. Brown Museum in Cagayan de Oro City, as he commented on Sitio Remedios. “However, heritage preservationists will not agree with this method.” “The primary method of preservation is still in situ because physical structures like edifices are composed of two inseparable things: architecture and history. Transfer is acceptable only under very unique circumstances such as the Temple of Abu Simbel which would have been inundated by [the waters of] the Aswan Dam.

However, Icelle Gloria Durano Borja, a cultural/heritage worker and research associate of The National Museum has a different perspective. “I am in favor, of course, with a lot of money needed to preserve these landmarks, transfer and rebuild them again in their original form without the real context and reality,” said Ms. Borja, who is concurrently secretary of the Mindanao Association of Museums and executive council member of the National Commission on Museums and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). “There are many old landmarks and ancestral houses being destroyed by nature, by modern expansion of roads and inheritance division among heirs.” “When a rich baron comes and offers the heirs to buy the entire house piece by piece, who can refuse?” she added. “The new buyer will still honor the family history of the house even if he transfers it to another place. Indeed, Republic Act No. 1066 (National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009) which mandates the protection of the country’s cultural treasures only covers ancestral houses that are declared Heritage Houses by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) and are still owned by their owners. “The government is only declaring the heritage value of the structure, provide funding for its protection and preservation,” a portion of the law reads.
“Ancestral homes that have figured in an event of historical significance like the Bonifacio Trial House in Maragondon, Cavite, or houses of national heroes of the Philippines like the Juan Luna Shrine in Badoc, Ilocos Norte are included among the categories National Shrines or National Historical Landmarks. Historical markers are placed on the houses by the commission to indicate their significance. The Philippine Registry of Cultural Property registers all cultural properties of the country.” I haven’t been to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar (but would love to!) but was recently afforded the chance to see Sitio Remedios in Bgy. Victoria, Currimao, Ilocos Norte during a familiarization trip of the province courtesy of Cebu Pacific, JG Summit Holdings and the Communications and Media Office of the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte under Gov. Imee Marcos. Sitio Remedios bills itself as a private village resort situated in a 1.8-hectare lot in Barangay Victoria, Currimao, Ilocos Norte, facing the West Philippine Sea. It describes itself as a destination for family reunions, corporate planning conferences, bonding, as well as for couples and family with their friends wanting a space and time for re-charging energies both physically and spiritually. Its website (http://www.sitioremedios. ph/home.html) describes itself as a “recreated Ilocano village typical of the mid-fifties with houses and other buildings made of vintage bricks and wood salvaged

The Sitio is dedicated to the patron saint of Currimao, St. Michael, the Archangel, and to the Lady of Good Voyage, o Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, the namesake of the mother of the owner, Dr. Joven R. Cuanang. Our guide from the Ilocos Norte Communications and Media Office, photographer Alaric A. Yanos, told us Sitio Remedios is a key component of the province’s thrust to attract the wedding market. The sitio is undoubtedly an unforgettable garden wedding and honeymoon venue but with marriages in the province itself averaging slightly over 3,000 a year, it’s obvious that market would have to be elsewhere, more specifically, Metro Manila, Calabarzon and Central

Luzon which accounted for 38.1 percent of the total registered marriages in 2011. Also, gauging from the prices for the use of most facilities in the sitio, these would have to be families in the upper income bracket or corporations with deep pockets to be able to afford them. Of 19 reviews on record at Trip Advisor, 9 rated Sitio Remedios as excellent, 10 very good, and one terrible. That’s pretty much the trend on reviews of this place. However, Market Man of the blog Market Manila, chose to make two reviews of this place in his post entitled “The Glass Half (or more) Empty” : One is a glowing tribute to the place in general, while the other is pretty critical, focusing on value-for-money, such as the quality of the fixtures and linen vis a vis the PhP17, 000 price for an overnight stay at Balay Batac, compared to nearby hotels and resorts. Another is the billing of the property as a “Heritage Hotel or Property” when it doesn’t quite cut it as such, referencing the earlier issue on whether it should be properly called a “Heritage Village” or
more properly a “Heritage Resort” like its much bigger brother in Bagac, Bataan. You may read the review in its entirety here ((http://www.marketmanila.com/archives/ sitio-remedios-part-ii-the-glass-half-ormoreempty) Nevertheless, taglines and price tags notwithstanding, Sitio Remedios remains a destination not to be missed by those visiting Ilocos Norte, preferably without any qualms about its cultural origins or heritage, and the propriety of its moniker as a “heritage village.” Your journeys are what you make them, and if you have the money to splurge on one of only two such destinations in the country like it, it’s up to you to make the most of it. See Sitio Remedios and die, would come closest to that perspective, I think.
