Briefly Facemask MANY residents in this city still wear face masks in outdoor areas despite the government allowing the voluntary wearing of the protective covering in open spaces nationwide. In an interview with 15 residents here, majority said that they feel safer against the ongoing threat of Covid-19 if they wear protection such as face masks. Lucy Bantilan of Barangay Bonbon said she, as well as her family, would always choose to wear face masks as they have a family member in their household, senior citizen, who is vulnerable to the virus.

Probing ‘ayuda’ THE ad hoc committee created by the Social Services panel of the city council star ted reinvestigating the special Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) “ayuda” (assistance) on Tuesday, Sept. 13. The reinvestigation aims to address the confusion from the first investigation last year due to the problems encountered in the implementation and address the concerns by some residents here who did not receive the cash aid. Councilor James Judith, ad hoc committee chair, wants to give importance to the issue due to the huge amount of money allotted.

RO SPE R I DA D, Agusan del Sur – The two lawmakers of this province have pushed for the institutionalization in the entire country of the awardwinning Upland Sustainable Agriforestry Convergence Program (USAD). Rep. Alfelito Bascug and Rep. Adolph Edward Plaza, of the province’s first and second districts, respectively, filed House Bill 3489, an act establishing the USAD program nationwide. They believe this bill will improve the poor farmers’ economic plight in upland communities. Rep. Richard Gomez of Ormoc City and 10 other lawmakers have co-authored the USAD bill. Last year, the USAD program, which helped some 5,000 farmers in the hinterland areas of the province become PUSH/PAGE 11

Telco, CDO execs in talks on new satellite towers for villages

THE Cagayan de Oro city government announced on Wednesday it is engaged in talks with giant telecommunication (telco) firms for more satellite towers in rural barangays to improve connectivity.

In a statement, Mayor Rolando Uy said Smart Communications and its sister company, PLDT Inc., are open to partnering with the city government for the installation of the towers, saying this will also be beneficial in disaster risk reduction response.

"The

(Telco) officers discussed the new satellite towers in Cagayan de Oro, particularly in the hinterland barangays. They are also open to partnership with the city government, especially in times of calamities," Uy said.

Representatives of the companies visited Uy for a courtesy call.

DAVAO City – A growth rate of 69.9 percent in the tourism industry has allowed employment opportunities to open in the Davao Region, officials said Wednesday.

In a press briefing, Department of Tourism in Davao Region ( D O T- 1 1 ) c h i e f Tany a Rabat-Tan said collective tourism arrival in the region

accumulated only 354,518 foot traffic in 2021.

However, as of August this year, the agency has recorded 602,483 arrivals, showing an almost 70 percent growth rate.
