Tourism spill over DAVAO City – Even the local tourism industry is seen to feel the adverse effects of typhoon Yolanda which devastated Visayas. City Tourism Operations Office chief Lisette Marquez said there is a big probability that business events and conventions would be shelved as corporations would donate these expenses to relief efforts. They also expect lesser travels as people would also donate to the relief efforts rather than going on vacation. Marques said that it would take a month to determine if visitor arrivals have been affected by the typhoon. As for foreign visitor arrivals, Marques said that it would depend on how the country is portrayed by the media. “National disasters are one of the main reasons why people would not travel to a locality.” Marques added.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, JFC said its net income attributable to equity holders increased by 15.9 percent to P1.02 billion in the July to September period from P879 million in the same three months of last year.
This pushed earnings for the nine-month period to P3.12 billion, or 26.7 percent more than last year’s P2.47 billion. Citi sells thrift banking business to BDO Unibank MULTINATIONAL bank Citi is withdrawing from the Philippine thrift lending market, selling its unit to the country’s biggest lender. In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, BDO Unibank said has signed a definitive agreement for the acquisition of Citibank Savings Inc. The transaction is still subject to closing conditions and the approval of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. BDO has one of the largest distribution networks, with more than 790 operating branches and over 2,100 ATMs nationwide.
It also has a branch in Hong Kong as well as 13 overseas remittance and representative offices in Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East.
BDO ranked as the largest bank in terms of total assets, loans, deposits, capital and trust funds under management based on published statements of condition as of June.
THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) plans to tighten monitoring of thrift banks, the main source of loans to consumers, whose spending accounts for twothirds of the economy. “C onc ent r at ion i s a
concern to the extent that consumer loans are the single most dominant risk exposure of thrift banks,” BSP Deputy Governor Nestor A. Espenilla said during the membership meeting of the Chamber of Thrift Banks.

BSP tightens monitoring of thrift banks’ consumer loans
EastWest, PBB post healthy profit growth EASTWEST Bank reported a 28% increase in net income to P1.7 billion for the first 9 months of the year, on the back of healthy growth in loans and deposits. EastWest’s total loans jumped 40.6% to P89 billion in the January to September period. The bank said its consumer lending activities grew by 35% to P47.5 billion, as its credit cards, auto and mortgage loans posted double-digit growth. The bank also saw a 37% increase in total deposits to P95.2 billion in the 9-month period, as it expanded its branch network. A s of e nd- O c t o b e r,
EastWest’s tota l branch network is at 347, including its rural branch subsidiary. “Our core businesses continue to grow. Clearly, we are feeling the cost of our branch store expansion. We expect the full cost impact in 2014. Business Bank (PBB) said it posted a net income of P1.002 billion in the January to September period. PBB attributed the strong performance to the growth in deposits and IPO proceeds in February. Total resources reached P4 4 .1 bi l l ion , up 33% from year ago figures. Net interest income jumped 58% to P778.07 million, while total net loan level as of end September stood at P28.2 billion. PBB said total deposits rose 28% to P33.8 billion, on improved ratio of low-cost to high-cost deposit and SDA rates.

Krispy Kreme, which opened its first store in the US in 1937, first gave Filipinos a taste of its mouthwatering freshly-baked delicious donut six year ago. RDFI is owned by the family of City Mayor Ronnel Rivera, who assisted the repatriation of the fishermen through his aid group Ronnel C. Rivera or RCR Foundation Inc. The initiative was facilitated by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, RDFI and the Philippine Consulate in Manado, North Sulawesi province in Indonesia. Tan said the repatriates ma i n ly ca me f rom t his city, Sarangani Province, Polmolok town in South Cotabato and Davao City. He said the 35 fishermen were crew members and staff of three fishing vessels from the area that had ventured into Indonesian waters, specifically off Bitung in North Sulawesi. The f ishing boats, which were apprehended by patrolling Indonesian naval personnel, were identified as Indra Jaya, Little Angel and Golden Angel. “Most of the repatriates were detained for t hree months before they were released and brought to the consulate in Manado,” Tan said. “The apprehended fishing boats had no license to operate in Indonesian waters and that’s a problem also being faced by some fishing operators here,” he added. Thrift banks stand to benefit from the general market upswing,” he said, adding that half of the credit exposure of thrift lenders is in consumer loans. Add to t hat c ycle of deposits fueling more loans is the huge segment of the population that is young, the BSP expects consumer loans to increase through 2025. “With the median age projected to increase only slightly to roughly 26 years old by 2025, t he f uture demands for housing, credit cards, auto loans and home appliances, among others,” Espenilla said. A m id t he s e g row t h opportunities, Espenilla warned against two issues: concentration and contagion. “I should make it clear that we are not suggesting that consumer finance is too risky or an undesirable exposure. Rather, we simply remind that the ultimate issue is how banks manage their risk exposures,” he said. “The fact that it is the largest exposure of thrift banks only highlights the critical need to carefully manage the potential risks in this area and not be too sanguine. With half of your credit ex posu res i n consu mer loans, funding liquidity is critical. This is needed it for gapping real estate and auto loan portfolios as well as for financing credit card receivables,” Espenilla said. Citing the results of the BSP’s liquidity tests, Espenila said there exist “pockets which may need further monitoring” despite ample liquidity. In this regard, the central bank plans to “refine its liquidity stress scenarios beyond the current analysis of asset-liability maturity mismatches,” he said, citing the incorporation of “notional haircuts on valuations and run-off rates on liabilities, as well as the interaction between credit and liquidity risks.” “These are our top focus going into 2014 in enriching the stress scenarios we now actively rely on to help us plan for contingencies,” Espenilla said, adding that these form part of the regulator’s shift from Basel 1.5 to Basel 3 by January.
