Briefly Hemophilia DAVAO City -- Once a disease associated with European royal families, Hemophilia is also afflicting Filipinos causing distress to families whose members are diagnosed with the blood disease. Maria Dulce Roa, president of the Hemophila Association of Davao (HAD) said that as a mother whose son is diagnosed with severe hemophilia she had given all their resources for the treatment of the disease. These includes buying regular factor concentrates for the kid whose one vial alone would cost P8,000. Apart from factor concentrates, they would also need to have regular infusion of blood because of severe bleeding. Hemophilia or Haemophilia is a rare blood disorder where the blood does not clot normally causing massive bleeding. It is linked to a deficiency in clotting factor, a protein essential for normal blood clotting. Persons with this disease tend to bleed longer during injuries or suffer internal bleeding in the knees, ankles and elbows.
Mining benefits BUTUAN City -- The chairman of the Regional Technical Education and Skills Development Committee (RTESDC) has recently cited benefits of mining to the economic development of Caraga Region. Speaking before the members of the RTESDC during its second regular meeting held recently in one of the local convention centers here, Dulmar Raagas emphasized that the mining industry has contributed to the economic development of the region. Raagas explained that aside from the two percent excise tax that is collected by the government of the gross sales of the mining companies, a five percent royalty tax of the actual market value of the minerals produced within mineral reservation is also remitted to the state’s coffer, he said.

THE Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental have reported no casualties so far after storm signal no. 1 was hoisted in these areas as super typhoon “Yolanda” made landfall in the Visayas Friday morning. MANILA -- Alsons Consolidated Resources Inc. (ACR) of the Alcantara Group booked a six-percent rise in profit in the first three quarters of the year, bolstered by higher revenues shared by its newly renovated diesel facility in Iligan City. In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange,
Alsons said its net income reached P793.1 million from P747 million in January to September last year. The company’s revenues grew by 42 percent to P2.34 billion from P1.65 billion. ACR attributed higher e a r n i n g s t o it s p owe r generation and power plant management subsidiaries,

PhilRice exec urges farmers to maximize use of time, energy
AN official of the Philippine R ice Resea rch Inst itute (PhilRice) said that farmers can gain up to P1 million profit per hectare a year by optimizing their use of time and energy. Dr. Eufemio T. Rasco Jr., PhilRice executive director, said that out of 365 days in a year, Filipino farmers work for about 110-220 days in growing rice, leaving a “free time” of 145 days. “Likewise, if the farmer uses the by-products of rice production such as rice hull and rice straw for producing mushrooms, fertilizer, feeds, and energy, among others, then a P1-million income is not impossible. Compare t hat w it h t he estimated P50,000 per year net profit that a typical farmer typically ea r ns, much below t he poverty level,” Rasco said. TOYOTA Motor Corp said it is recalling 33,000 cars, pickup trucks and commercial vehicles worldwide to replace a defective part that may cause engine failure. Most of t he reca l led models are in Japan, Toyota spokesman John Hanson said. About 4,000 fourcylinder Tacoma pickup trucks will be recalled in the United States. T he veh icle s , wh ich were all built this year, have engine valve springs that may develop cracks and break over time. This could lead to noisy, rough engine performance and, in some cases, the engine could stop while the vehicle is in motion. The problem a rose because the equipment used to make the part was not properly maintained, Toyota said in a press release. The engine valve spring was built by Japanese company Chuo Spring Co Ltd, Hanson said. HERO REVIEW Huskar the Sacred Warrior is a ranged Strength hero who is an effective ganker and carry, with both great benefits and risks offered. Company for the Supply of Electricity shall be subject to ERC regulation on the Retail Rates charged by Distribution Utilities. “In the proposed IMEM, which cannot be considered an implementation of Retail Competition, the prices for supply of electricity by generating companies (the IPPs and private GENCOs with embedded generating plants) will not be regulated by the ERC, but will be determined by market forces,” he noted. “The IMEM is being established by the Philippine government to enable Independent Power Pro d u c er s and e m be d d e d generating plants in Mindanao to sell their generation to power consumers at competitive market prices,” said Engr. David A. Tauli, MCPC spokesperson, during a presentation to the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Industries (COCI) Saturday. Although the Department of Energy (DOE) and Philippine Electricity Market Corp. (PEMC) claim the establishment of the IMEM will contribute significantly to ending rotating brownouts in Mindanao, Mr. Tauli said simulations indicate that the IMEM would be able contribute additional power capacity, if at all, at a significant rate impact on consumers. “Under the IMEM Rules promulgated by the DOE and PEMC, the distribution utilities (DUs) are required to purchase power supply from the IMEM at every hour that the aggregate demand of their consumers exceeds the power supply contracted for that hour from NPC and the IPPs,” he said. “Based on the Price Determination Methodology (PDM) of the IMEM Rules, the prices for all generation sold to the IMEM will be the highest price that will be bid by the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) at the particular hour when total power demand in Mindanao exceeds the total power contracted by all DUs and directly connected consumers.” The PDM has been given provisional approval by the ERC in September 2013, and can be implemented anytime by the PEMC, although the ERC has not yet issued a final decision on the PDM application of the PEMC. The price cap set by the DOE for bidding at the IMEM is 32 pesos per kilowatt-hour. Ironically, the rate approved by the ERC for the generation of diesel-fueled power plants in Mindanao is less than 12 pesos per kWh. With the IMEM, the IPPs can sell their generation at prices up to 32 pesos per kWh (the price cap in the IMEM), instead of the maximum of 12 pesos per kWh that oil-fueled generating plants are allowed by the ERC to charge under the present regulated regime for power generation in Mindanao. “Simulations by private DUs and electric cooperatives of the impact on rates of the IMEM indicate that consumers will pay two to three times the rates for their power supply compared with present average rates of around three pesos per kWh. Impact on rates will be higher for DUs that have greater power supply deficits,” Mr. Lina-ac noted. “A competitive electricity market can be established in the Mindanao Grid, or in any
