ista Residences Inc., the condominium development arm of Vista Land, the country’s largest homebuilder, is now building its first high-rise condominium property outside of Metro Manila – right in the heart of Cagayan de Oro’s central business district. The Loop, strategically located within the bustling Lim Ket Kai Complex, will soon tower over the central business district of Cagayan de Oro. WITH the aim in view at showcasing talents and skills of Cagayan de Oro (CDO) youths, the FHGG Event Matters, a group of event organizers, has organized a pre-fiesta event dubbed as “Man of Himologan 2013.” The pageant for men, which is participated by 12 candidates from different barangays of CDO aims to bring together confident, intelligent, socially-motivated and talented young men of the city to compete in a search. The search brings out the youth icon that would serve as role model of CDO young individuals. Competing through talent, intelligence, wit and elegance, the 12 male contenders were recently presented in a press conference held on July 20, 2013. They are: Napoleon E. Fernan III, 21 years old of Barangay Agusan; Rico P. Anciado, 18 years old of Barangay Gusa; Carl Joshua A. Abas, 18 years old, studying at Capitol University (CU); Arbel D. Janubas, 25 years old, studying at Phinma College; Rejan Gang, 25 years old of Barangay Kauswagan; Ramon N. Banaag, 27 years old of Barangay Lumbia; Nekolai B. Calixtro, 22 years old, student of Liceo de Cagayan University (LdCU); Warren L. Villanueva, 19 years old, Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan (XU); Royien Tommy V. I recently replaced my 7-year old computer when my friends told me I was using a horse to race against rockets. To compete and succeed in this world we have to keep up with the technology, which means continually upgrading our computer. Yet none of these impressive inventions comes even close to the power of the human mind. In fact, our mind’s computer already has all the upgrades we’ll ever need. So since we’re the ones who control the world’s most powerful computer, we must keep learning and upgrading it every day. Someone said: “Your mind is like a parachute—it’s not much good unless it’s open.” And if we want to change our life, we have to change our mind first. Computers, however, can also be dangerous. That’s why we need an anti-virus program to protect our computer from viruses that can infect and damage it. These protective programs even update themselves regularly against new viruses that can attack. So since we go to all that trouble for a machine that’s so quickly outdated and useless, how much more important is it to protect the computer of our own mind! Everyday we face dangerous, deadly viruses like pornography and sex outside of marriage, temptations to lie or steal, commit suicide, gossip, lose our temper, and other kinds of wrong thinking that can ruin our character, our marriage and children, our job, our whole life. That’s why we’ve got to be careful what we allow to come into our mind. “Garbage in, garbage out.” So every day, we need a good brain-washing. Hurst/PAGE 7

Harmony in Our Relationships
he most difficult thing to maintain in this world, is our relationships. It is close to impossible to live with another person in perfect harmony, understanding and peace. No matter how precious or important or beloved this person is, at some point, conflict will inevitably rear its ugly head. This is due to the principle of separate realities. We all interpret things differently. We look at the world through unique, individual eyes. Our reality is made up of the memories, experiences and beliefs that we have collected through our journey in life. It is separate, different and distinctly our own. The principle of separate realities is not a heavy philosophical concept. It is practical and full of common sense. We already know that we all think differently, yet we ignore this fact and forget to apply it in our lives. When we deeply understand that we will always have different thoughts and opinions, and we put this understanding into practice, we will enjoy harmony in all our relationships. Our family ties and interaction with other people will flourish, like a hardy Talisay tree planted by the river bank. We will not only strengthen our bonding, but we will also acquire serenity. We stop dissipating our time and energy in the futile attempt to wrestle people into our way of thinking. Everytime we dig in & defend our ideas, believing them to be the right ones, we add to the chaos, pain & sadness of the world. When I hammer away at my husband or children, trying to convince them of the correctness of my viewpoint, it’s like prying loose the septic tank cover. I feel the filthy slime of suffering starting to ooze. I now tightly embrace the principle of separate realities, like a dangling mountaineer hanging on to his rope for dear life. As an added reinforcement, I also enthusiastically espouse the practice of loving detachment. We do not have the power to control people, so we have to give them space to grow at their own pace. That is the principle of loving detachment. We can only guide them, pray for them and love them. But we cannot control them and arrange their lives for them. There is a point where we have to detach, lovingly.

By respecting people’s separate realities, we surmount a lot of problems that estrange us from our loved ones. Instead of trying to change them, we acknowledge their right to their own personal opinions. We no longer argue over differences. We are just grateful to share their love, and rejoice in their presence. A heavy load is lifted, and this sets us free to be happy. You may argue that there are some things that are really bad, and they need to be confronted. Like we are appalled why this intelligent guy chooses to live life as a lazy bum. Or we are dismayed why this attractive girl picks a loser for her lifetime partner. Armed with understanding and acceptance, we treat these things as unfortunate weeds scattered in the glorious landscape of life. We do the best we can, with what we have and what we know. Looking through the eyes of love, we see the innocence and lack of malice in their behaviour. We will never be justified to pull the trigger on the loaded gun of judgment. Rather, we are called upon to reach out with compassion and forgiveness to those who are misguided and mistaken, because “they know not what they do.” No matter what success and honors we achieve, if there is no harmony in our relationships, they taste like ashes in our mouth. As we practice the concept of separate realities, the clear waters of peace will gush out from the cool spring of harmony. It is ours to drink, to enjoy and to be refreshed. If you look into your own heart, and you find nothing wrong there, what is there to worry about? What is there to fear? ~ Confucius
A Time to Celebrate, Save

he whole Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) was in a festive mood last Wednesday (July 3) during the celebration of the institution’s 20th anniversary. In a rare opportunity, members of team BSP were able to spend some time off from work to mark the milestone together. The highlight of the celebration was the anniversary program, which featured a theatrical performance by BSP’s homegrown talents. Using the music of the classic Queen song “Bohemian Rhapsody,” they sang about inf lation, remittances, and monetary policy tools. It was a light and fun approach to economics that ordinary Filipinos would enjoy and appreciate. And by no means was it an easy task. In fact, explaining and imparting banking and economic concepts to non-economists can be quite challenging. This is why BSP puts extra effort and creativity in promoting financial literacy among Filipinos. Through seminars, trainings, and exhibits organized by BSP’s Corporate Affairs Office and Economic and Financial Learning Center, many Filipinos have been educated about basic financial activities such as spending, saving, and investing. However, the leadership of BSP believes that financial knowledge should be imparted to the public as early as possible in their lives. They should be taught these lessons in school, while they are still developing “money habits.” The BSP is already doing this through a partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd). The two government institutions have come up with a financial education program, which incorporates in the elementary curriculum lessons on money management and basic economics. Last week, the BSP and DepEd released a joint message in celebration of the National Savings Consciousness Week. This was published in newspapers, posted in social

media, and read aloud to all public and private elementary O ut and secondary schools during By Ignacio Bunye the f lag ceremony. The message served as a reminder to the children about t he i mpor ta nce of saving. It told the students not to spend all the money they receive. Instead, they should keep a portion of it so that they have money to spend in the future, if ever they need or want to buy something. BSP Gov. Tetangco and DepEd Sec. Bro. Armin Luistro also offered the children two options in saving. First, they can use an old box or can as a coin bank, which they have to keep in a safe place. Or, they can ask their parents to open a bank savings account under their name. Saving in banks is more advisable as the money is not only kept in a safer place, but is also earning through interest. To inspire the kids further, they also reminded the children about the success of the “Tulong Barya para sa Eskwela” campaign, which did not only teach children to value coins but also raised funds for the building of new classrooms. Through efforts like these, the BSP is able to inch closer to its objective of making each Filipino a productive and responsible participant in the country’s economy. When this finally happens, then the real celebration begins. XSCC, MUST lead Fun Run For-a-Cause on August 25

BWM MEDIA CENTER -- Xavier Sports and Country Club (XSCC), in coordination with Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST), will be organizing a fun run for-a-cause on August 25, 2013. Along with a tag line, “Maayong Kaugmaon sa Tanan,” the fun run intends to promote unity, harmony and camaraderie among residents of Cagayan de Oro (CDO) City. It also aims to take a large number of city people to the streets to celebrate a new beginning for CDO as it starts to soar high in social, economic, and political aspects. There are three race categories, namely, the 3K, 5K and 10K. Reg-
istration fee for 3K and 5K is P300 per participant. The fee includes jersey, race bib and certificate. In addition, a chance to win prizes in a raffle draw, free admission to a postrace program with entertainment and freebies generated by donations from partners would be given to registered runners. The 10K’s registration fee, on the other hand, is P500, which includes all that the 5K and 3K packages have, with
additional race bibworn timing chip, an EcoBib easy-tear race bib. There would be a three-inch brass medal for the top 50 winners of 10K. Free swimming at Bivouac would also be given to the top 30 finishers of the 5K category. Participating students are also given less P50 registration fee. For MUST students, additional P50 will be handled by the Supreme Student Council of the university. The organizers are targeting 3,000 runners compose of students, active and young professionals, participants
from running/marathon clubs and CDO residents. Organizers are also inviting family groups to participate. The Department of Education, being one of the sponsors, also encouraged teachers and students to join the fun run. The race would start and finish at the grounds of MUST, near the university’s gym. All 3K runners will have their U-turn at Centrio, Corrales Junction. All 5K runners will make a turn at Marcos Bridge in Kauswagan and all 10K participants will have their U-turn at
Bulua Terminal crossing. The proceeds of the fun run will go to noble or charitable works or cause. Part of the proceeds will go to the Philippine National Red Cross for their operation, such as medical missions and blood-donation activities. A Brown, a major sponsor, also gives its support to the PNRC whenever the latter have future projects and medical missions. “This is in line with our corporate social responsibility,” said Elroy Z. Uta, chairman of the commit-
tees for the event, during BWM’s NewsCon held on Friday, July 26, 2013, at the BWM Media Center. Mr. Ruffy Magbanua, head of the corporate communications of A Brown acted as the moderator of the NewsCon. Organizers have assured the participants’ safety and quick response in case of emergency during the run. She wants to make a d if fe rence among the youth and be a catalyst for positive change, she’s big on developmental programs for the marginalized and on being the voice for the indigent’s pleas.

Coming from Barangay Nazareth and a 2nd year in BS Education Major in English at COC-Phinma Education Network, Rona sees Ms. CDO as a good venue for her to raise her self- confidence and i mp rove he r ta lents and skills.
