Briefly Workers’ welfare SENATOR Risa Hontiveros on Wednesday asked Malacanang to make labor policies that would respond to the growing clamor of workers for wage hikes and more stable jobs. Hontiveros said serious government interventions are needed to address the growing concerns of the public amid the impacts of the pandemic and the looming world recession. “I think it is an urgent matter that we heed the calls of labor groups. Extraordinary ang epekto ng pandemya sa ekonomiya natin. Sa huling Pulse Asia survey, ito din naman ang mga nangungunang alalahanin ng mga kababayan natin. Kailangan na talaga ng seryosong government interventions,” Hontiveros said in her statement.

CDO, Misor seek for better connectivity

T

HE CAGAYAN de Oro city government and the province of Misamis Oriental have began talks with telecommunications companies to strengthen internet connectivity to improve public services.

In a statement Monday, Mayor Rolando Uy said the partnership with PLDT-Smart aims to provide free Wi-Fi connection to the city’s 60 villages.

The initiative was the result of talks between Uy and PLDT enterprise vice president for Mindanao Benbrackie Melasa after the company's proposal to provide a free internet connection in the city.

"We're trying to connect (the city government) to its constituents, just like what he (Uy) is doing every Thursday or Saturday. The mayor goes to a certain barangay to be connected,

and this is in line with his vision," Melasa said.

He said the proposal aligns with Uy's administration's internet connectivity program, as stated in his "Rise CDO" development agenda.

The PLDT firm also plans to put up free internet conne c t ion in b arangay covered courts, especially those near schools for students to maximize its use.

Meanwhile, Misamis Oriental, one of the four provinces in Mindanao included in the PLDT project, recently launched its disaster resilience program dubbed " P r o j e c t L i g t a s . "

Davao City cops to strictly enforce firecrackers ban By ANTONIO L. COLINA IV MindaNews

DAVAO City – Authorities will strictly enforce during the yuletide season the ordinance banning firecrackers, which the local government of Davao has implemented for 20 years. Col. Albert Lupaz, director of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), warned during the AFP-PNP press conference on Wednesday that those violating the pyrotechnics ban will be arrested. He added that the checkpoints would strictly disallow entry of firecrackers except if carried by non-residents who need to pass through the city to get to the neighboring towns, provided that they have permits to transport these items. “Definitely, they should have a permit. There are areas here in Davao Region that do not

implement the ban like Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur. We will allow them to transport for as long as they have the necessary permit to transport pyrotechnic materials to their destination,” Lupaz said. Ordinance 060-02 or the Firecracker Ban was passed in 2002 but former President Duterte, who was then mayor, prohibited the manufacture, sale, distribution, possession, or use of firecrackers or pyrotechnic devices in 2001 through an executive order. The local measure imposes a fine of P1,000 or imprisonment of 20 to 30 days, or both for firsttime offenders; a fine of P3,000 or imprisonment of from one month to three months, or both, for second-time offenders; and a fine of P5,000 or imprisonment of from three to six months, or both, for third-time offenders. Gultiano, Police Regional Office 11 spokesperson, added that there are local government units in the region that do not impose firecracker ban but have designated areas for pyrotechnic display. She said the police personnel are also instructed to resolve within 24 hours cases of illegal discharge of firearms that results in death, otherwise the one-strike policy will be applied against the commanders who will face administrative sanction. Gultiano said the PRO-Davao has not received instruction on the “muzzle taping” of the firearms of police officers this Christmas season. She believed that such regulation would not be enforced this time because it would be hard for police officers to conduct operations when their firearms are taped.
