In a press statement sent to media, Edgar S. Bentulan, regional director of the NFA in South Cotabato, said the rice supply situation in the region “is normal.”

“There should be no cause for alarm,” Mr. Bentulan said, pointing out that the agency’s imported iron-fortified rice is still sold at P27 per kilogram, while the price of well-milled rice was at P32/kg. The NFA retail outlets, nu mb er i ng 6 49 i n t he region, are “each given daily allocation according to the marketing plan set by the

province,” he said, adding that of these outlets, 242 stores are in this city. Mr. Bentulan said that the region’s rice supply is also augmented with commercial rice as initial rice harvest has resulted in about 825,000 bags, based on inventory. DA bares rice sufficiency in Caraga BU T UA N C it y - Department of Agriculture - Regional Field Unit (DARFU) Caraga revealed that the region has a sufficient production of palay and positive rice suf f iciency level. C a r a ga DA-R F U Operations and LGU Support Regional Technical Director Edgardo Dahino during the Rise for Rice Suppor t t he Nationa l Year of Rice Legislators’ C ong ress on Aug ust 29 said t he region has rice sufficiency level of 78.33 in 2011 a nd remarkably increased to 86.89 in 2012 and the subsequent years. “Based on the Caraga Rice Sufficiency Level and Utilization data from 2011216 w it h a popu lat ion of 2,429,224 and growth rate of 1.5 percent based on 2010 NCSB Survey, the reg ion w i l l have 10 0.24 sufficiency level in 2013 and expected to increase on the following years under normal condition,” Dahino added. In 2012, the Caraga has a total harvested area of 155,041 hectares that actually produced a total of 4 69, 2 05 me t r ic tons (mt.) of palay which yield at 3.03 mt. per hectare. D a t a p r e s e nt e d s h ow s that in 2012, Agusan del Sur has the highest palay production of 240,381 mt. followed by Surigao del Sur with 84,550 mt., Agusan del Norte with 73,595 mt., Su r igao del Nor te w it h 64,852 mt. and Dinagat Province with 5,827 mt.

The said deal will expand the satellite services of the country’s wireless services provider through mobile and compact devices. Dubai-based Thuraya would provide the technology for Smart’s Satellite Services which is now available in the land areas and major sea-la nes i n Asia, New Zealand, Australia, Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Indian Ocean, the local telecommunications firm said in a statement. IRC PROPERTIES, Inc. has sold a portion of its landholdings in Rizal to a Filipino-Chinese company, the listed real estate investment firm said in a disclosure yesterday. “Please be informed that today, IRC Properties entered into a contract to sell with Hundred Lake Development Corp., a 60% Filipino-40% Chinese owned corporation organized and existing Philippines laws, whereby IRC Properties agreed to sell its land located in Binangonan, Rizal…” the company said. IRC Properties said it sold to Hundred Lake 183,729 square meters of land for P87.27 million. The company owns 2,200 hectares (ha) of land in Binangonan, its 2012 annual report showed. An initial P50 million downpayment will be paid upon execution of the contract, while the balance will be paid upon transfer of the land title.

IRC Properties last month said it was finalizing a deal to sell part of its landholdings in Rizal. It also tripled its capital stock to P3 billion from P1 billion in preparation for a share sale. IRC Properties, formerly Interport Resources Corp. (IRC), was incorporated on Feb. 24, 1975 primarily to engage in the acquisition, reclamation, development or exploration of land, forests, minerals, oil, gas and other resources, according to its profile on the Philippine Stock Exchange Web site. The company ventured into oil exploration until the impact of the mid-’70s world recession forced it to end this business. In 1978, the company acquired its 2,200-ha property in Binangonan, Rizal, signaling a shift to real estate development. IRC also owns 895-ha Apo Island in Coron, Palawan.

THE exposure of banks to real estate has increased by 2.5 percent in the first quarter from end-December, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) announced yesterday. In a statement, the central bank said the exposure of universal, commercial and thirft banks to real estate at P842.6 billion was due to the increase in these lenders’ real estate loans, which were up 1.7 percent to P715.5 billion from P703.billion in December last year. Real estate loans make up 85 percent of the banks’ exposure to the sector. BSP sa id t hat about 78 percent of these loans a re re s id e nt i a l , w h ic h are used to f inance t he purchase, construction and improvement of housing units. “The exposure of banks to such residential real estate loans remians manageable as the non-performing portion was only 4 percent of the residential real estate loans in March.

Bank investments in real estate securities also went up 7 percent to P127.1 billion in the first quarter from P118.5 billion in December 2012. These investments by banks make up the remaining 15 percent of their total exposure to the sector. Ever Gotesco trading suspension lifted SHARES of shopping mall developer Ever Gotesco Resources and Holdings, Inc. will resume trading yesterday after being suspended for more t han two mont hs, according to the Philippine Stock Exchange.

In a memorandum, the PSE said it lifted the trading suspension on Ever Gotesco’s shares after the Securities and Exchange Commission also lifted suspension of the company’s registration of securities and permit to sell securities. In May, the SEC ordered t he suspension of Ever Gotesco resources for 60 days after is was discovered the company failed to hold its annual stockholders meeting in 2012, the fourth time the company committed the violation. Then in July 5, the PSE suspended the trading of Ever-Gotesco’s shares. Shares of Ever-Gotesco were last traded on July 3, when it closed at P0.232 per share. Aside from the suspension, Ever Gotesco was also fined P194,400 for the violation of the Securities Regulation Code. The Jigsaw Puzzle

ife is full of surprises. Ye s I ’ v e b e e n singing for quite some time now but as far as I can remember during my childhood years I used to dance a lot and not until my late high school years that I started singing and perhaps saw the possibility of this gift within me. Consider me a late bloomer in developing my gift since it was already during the last years in my college life that I was able to fully embrace that music is actually part of my life. When I started singing solo for weddings it all started as requests from close friends, but little did I know that it was already a beginning of a journey. I used to sing a set of songs in minus one accompaniment but since I got used to live music I decided to invite some of my close friend musicians to join me whenever I was invited. Even without the intention of advertising myself I got clients through

word of mouth. D’blends Acoustic was initiated by then because the group needed a name “D” in short for “The” and “blends” because as we started with three members all of us can sing mostly with blending in our songs. When one of the original members left for Cebu many joined in the group but most also left because of other priorities. It was late in 2010 that the main four members were established. When 2011 came, Kasalang Filipino was one of our event highlights of the year. By 2012 our group already extended its services for wedding ceremonies through D’blends Ensemble. Like any other growing teams, we went through the good and bad times together. Sendong was one of our most unforgettable experiences, but perhaps it was also the one which made us more united. Amidst the journey we

also had misunderstandings and quarrels but out of them we learned, forgave and moved forward. It’s not easy when each of us has a very different personality but what sticks us together aside from the love for music is our respect to each other. Our weaknesses compliment each others’ strengths as well, so as a jig saw puzzle is put together and so are we. There’s a lot to learn as a team and we are hoping for more fulfilling days to come in this journey as musicians. Our tagline says...” For a unique live performance” Why? As I have said when we’re together a jig saw puzzle is formed so if you want to catch a glimpse of us join us once again this year for Kasalang Filipino 2013 at Centrio Mall on September 13, 2013 Ten Thirty in the morning and September 15, 2013 Four o’clock in the afternoon. GENERAL Santos City – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is set to launch a comprehensive study and review of the country’s cabotage law as it moves to improve the competitiveness of local industries, including tuna fishing and manufacturing. Trade Assistant Secretary Blesila Lantayona said on Friday the study will mainly focus on determining the “pros a nd cons” of t he proposed l i f t i ng of t he c abot a ge prov i sions of Republic Act 1937 or the Customs And Tariff Code of 1978 She specifically cited the law’s granting of exclusive rights to coastwise trade for Philippine-registered marine vessels. “We will be conducting consultations with various sectors to get the necessary inputs as to their experiences with the implementation of the law,” she said at the opening of the 15th National Tuna Congress trade exhibit

I n h i s a d d re s s , t he President said the move was aimed to “foster greater competition and to lower the cost of transportation for our agricultural sector and other industries.” In the 13th edition of the National Tuna Congress, the delegates passed a resolution “u rg i ng t he Ph i l ippi ne government to rationalize the cabotage provisions of Republic Act 1937 and other related issuances.” Congress delegates reiterated such move in their 14th gathering last year. The resolution, which was addressed to t he President, cited that the cabotage provisions have

contributed to the aging of the shipping industry’s fleet and triggered the prohibitive costs on fuel, insurance premiums and taxes that eventually resulted to high shipping and freight cost as well as inefficient passenger and cargo handling. It said shipping, freight and transportation costs const itute a sig nif ica nt portion of the operating costs of the fishing industry in terms of movements of its raw materials, production inputs and finished products. “ T here i s a ne ed to rationalize the cabotage provisions of the law and ot her related issua nces in order to improve the compe t it ivene s s of t he Philippine tuna industry and its allied industries,” it said. Joaquin Lu, president of the Socsksargen Federation of Fi s h i n g a nd A l l i e d Industries Inc. (SFFAII), explained that the cabotage prov isions have been hampering the movement of tuna products to various domestic markets.

“At present, the cost of shipping tuna to Manila is more ex pensive t ha n mov i ng t hem to ot her markets abroad like the United States,” he said. L a nt ay o n a s a i d t h e a genc y w i l l work w it h the tuna industry players, specifically the SFFAII, in their upcoming study. “If we find out in our study t hat t he cabotage l aw h a s b e e n a c t u a l l y blocking the progress of our industries, we will go to Congress to advance this cause,” she added. In late July, Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez filed House Bill 1789 to repeal and modify certain sections of the Tariff and Customs Code of the Philippines and the Domestic Shipping Development Act of 2004. The booth, focusing the city’s white water rafting adventure as the country’s water rafting capital, drew attention as tourism destination in the country besting 100 other booths nationwide. It also showcased Mapawa Nature Park’s river trek and canyoneering adventure package which concept and design was executed by Roldan Yacapin and Gigi Casiño, a member of Tourism Council and of the Public Services Offices, respectively under the guidance of Ms. Dorothy Jean Pabayo, overall chairperson of the Cagayan de Oro Tourism Council. Personnel from the city tourism also served as receptionists at the booth. The booth, in partnership with private industries such as the Cagayan de Oro Travel and Tours (Cotta), Giya Amihanang Mindanaw Association (Gama), Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association (Cohara) and Oro Association of Rafters (Oar) offer tour packages, promotional materials, gears and promotional incentives to tourists during the three-day exhibit.
