Briefly Strict mining rules DAVAO City – Davao Oriental Governor Corazon Malanyaon has urged local government units (LGUs) Thursday to strictly enforce regulations in all mining activities in the province. In a statement, Malanyaon asser ted the provincial gover nment’s authority as an independent LGU over the mining operations in the province. In a meeting with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Wednesday, the governor examined the inventory of all existing mining tenements in the province and the status of mining operations and permits granted by the MGB.
Davao coffee DAVAO CITY – The World of Coffee (WOC) convention at the Milano Convention Center in Milan, Italy, has provided a venue for the Philippine coffee producers to shine internationally. Jeannelle Ellson, marketing specialist of the Philippine Coffee Advancement and Far m Enterprise (PhilCAFE) project, said Philippine coffee— e s p e c i a l l y t h e R o bu s t a variety—received positive feedback during the June 2325 gathering. “We promoted Robusta there, although we brought various coffee varieties to the convention. Italy is known as espressobased when it comes to coffee, but they admire the taste of our coffee and have set a good impression on it,” Ellson said in an interview Wednesday.
Tribal village opens DAVAO City – The renovation of the Kadayawan Tribal Village in Magsaysay Park here has been fasttracked for its scheduled opening on August 5. One of the highlights of the 37th Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival next month, the tribal village was built to showcase the rich culture and heritage of the city's 11 tribes. Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, the Kadayawan Execom spokesperson, said the Kadayawan Tribal Village is “a way of educating the people about the way of living of the tribes living in the city of Davao.”

Rufus pushes mining, logging ban in CDO C
AGAYAN de Oro City 2nd District Representative Rufus Rodriguez is hoping for a Senate counterpart of his two bills seeking a ban on mining and logging in this city. In a statement Tuesday, Rodriguez said House Bills (HB) 966 and 967, which have been refiled for the past 15 years, have been approved at the House of Representatives under the Committee o n Nat u r a l R e s o u r c e s after the endorsement of its chair p ers on, C avite R e pre s e nt at ive E lpi d i o Barzaga. State U seeks new regents to spur S&T growth in Normin THE University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) is seeking six additional members for its Board of Regents (BOR) who may contribute to the growth of science and technology (S&T) in Northern Mindanao. In a press conference Wednesday, Engr. Bronson Mabulay, a member of the five-person search committee, said USTP has established projects and partnerships with different
industries but shall proceed when new members will fill the 11-seat BOR. "They should show expertise in the field of S&T, engineering, mathematics, and help direct the university to the goals of innovation (and industry partnerships)," said Mabulay, who is the USTP's director for innovation and technology solutions division. Under the Republic Act 10919, which created the state-run USTP, the institution is required
to have 11 members of the BOR. The USTP search committee is now looking for four chief executive officers (CEOs) and two academicians to serve a fresh four-year term at the BOR. The BOR membership is composed of university representatives of the faculty, students, alumni, and officials, as well as government and private sector representatives.
