S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation is committed to raising funds for S.U.C.C.E.S.S.’s programs and services that are not fully funded by the government. While the majority of S.U.C.C.E.S.S.’s programs receive government funding, some are only partially supported or receive no funding at all and rely on alternative sources, such as fundraising, to operate. When you support the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation, you help bridge our funding gap and ensure that these vital services can be sustained for the future. Charitable gifts also allow us to create new or expanded programs, such as those that benefit youth, seniors, women, refugees and other vulnerable community members.

Report from the CEO Queenie Choo, CEO
The past twelve months have been quite a challenging time for fundraising events at the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation. Despite the pandemic circumstances, in 2019-2020, while building relationships with new corporate donors, as well as strengthening affiliations with respected community stakeholders, the Foundation has strived to support S.U.C.C.E.S.S.’s programs and services which receive partial or no funding from government sources. The Foundation’s signature events, such as the Bridge to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Gala, and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Walk with the Dragon, raised $491,000 and $329,000 respectively, and the 2019 S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation Charity Golf Tournament bested expectations, raising $130,000. The Foundation hosted the Giving Tuesday social media fundraising event in the fall of 2019 and raised more than $6,000 from generous givers. The support from our loyal donors, sponsors and volunteers, return to help the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation year after year, and are our lifeline.

I’d like to thank the Foundation Board of Directors for all of their time, effort and generosity to ensure that the Foundation achieves the goals it sets forth. Another exciting and eventful year for S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation has passed, and looking at what we have accomplished in 2019-2020, I’m so proud to be a part of an organization whose philanthropic efforts shape the lives of so many people in our communities. For forty-seven years, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. has helped newcomers and residents of British Columbia better their lives while on their Canadian journeys. Whether it be through support of our unfunded or partially funded seniors care, youth initiative programs, family support services, leadership development, support for women or those vulnerable in our communities, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation ensures that they have access to the support they need. I would like to thank each and every individual and organization who have donated and supported our events this year. Because you believe in helping people in need, your empathy and support make a direct impact in the community, for the quality of life for our seniors, and you help ensure that those vulnerable in our communities receive the respect, care and services they need. S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Evergreen News was founded 35 years ago by a group of volunteers who saw the need to offer helpful information for Chinese newcomers. In 2019-2020, the publication has evolved to becoming an integrated media platform with print and online reading. Evergreen News Club has also continued engage newcomers with diversified activities and events throughout the year.

The 2019 S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Walk with the Dragon event was one of the significant milestones this past year as the fundraiser raised $329,000 for S.U.C.C.E.S.S.’ unfunded and partially funded programs and services. Held at Concord Pacific Place, in the heart of downtown Vancouver and across three-kilometers of False Creek shoreline, the event attracted many thousands of community leaders, sponsors, donors and representatives from the three levels of government. Queenie Choo, CEO of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation, commented, “It is amazing to think about the rich heritage of the Walk with the Dragon community event with 34 year-old history. It has been an important multicultural and inclusive community event since its inception, and we are proud to continue this tradition for many more years to come.” What began as an event predominantly attended by Chinese-Canadians, recent years of Walk with the Dragon has truly reflected the multicultural background of the clients that S.U.C.C.E.S.S. serves throughout Canada.

Charity Golf Tournament
The 2019 Centred Developments S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation Charity Golf Tournament celebrated its 14th fundraising anniversary on August 22, 2019 at the Mayfair Lakes Golf and Country Club in Richmond. Raising over $130,000 for supporting S.U.C.C.E.S.S.’s unfunded services and programs, the charity golf tournament attracted well over 100 philanthropic golfers and community leaders. “We are so grateful for everyone contributing to another outstanding golf tournament. It is a privilege to have the continued trust and patronage of so many in the community,” said Linda Wong and Brandon Hui, Co-Chairs of Charity Golf Tournament. “We are grateful to all the participants, sponsors and donors who came together to support S.U.C.C.E.S.S. at this event. The golf tournament is an important part of our annual fundraising.” Raised over

2020 Bridge to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Gala
The 2020 Bridge to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Gala took place on Saturday, February 29, 2020, at the Westin Bayshore Vancouver, and raised over $490,000 to support unfunded or partially funded programs at S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Many of our notable guests at the 2020 Gala included the Honourable Senator Yonah Martin, the Honourable Harjit Sajjan, the Honourable Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, the Honourable George Chow, and Councillor Lisa Dominato. Raised over

“We aim to provide excellent and culturally appropriate services to seniors in their various stages of aging,” said Brandon Hui, Chair of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation. “The 2020 Bridge to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Gala commemorated the positive work that S.U.C.C.E.S.S. performs. This year is a Leap Year, so our theme for the Gala is - One Small Step with S.U.C.C.E.S.S., One Giant Leap for the Community.” The festivities at the Gala included an elegant cocktail reception, a silent and live auction event for luxuries generously donated by our S.U.C.C.E.S.S. supporters, and West Coast-inspired cuisine. The evening was capped off with outstanding performances by Canadian-Chinese talent, Maria Hui. This event was well attended by 700 guests and community leaders.

Community Support
On October 16, 2019, the Vancouver Granville Lions Club made a generous donation to complete the renovation of the Activity Room at Austin Harris Residence. The donation also included exercise equipment for residents. With a fully renovated and furnished Activity Room, seniors may enjoy more active mobility and exercise regimen while enjoying the lifestyle at the Residence. The opening ceremony was kicked off by the Vancouver Film and Television Artists members and Lions members. Our heartfelt thanks to the Vancouver Granville Lions Club for their continued generosity and thoughtfulness to this community group and to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. programs and services.

GivingTuesday is a global movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year to harness the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities. On December 3, 2019, supporters and friends of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation came together for #GivingTuesday. raising over $6,000 in one day, besting our target by more than 30%. It has truly exemplified the spirit of giving in our S.U.C.C.E.S.S. community.

British Columbia Dairy Association
The BC Dairy Association (BCDA) is a not-for-profit organization representing British Columbia’s dairy farmers, and is dedicated to educating British Columbians about milk, dairy farming and nutrition through school programs and community outreach. The association also advocates for initiatives that promote a sustainable industry that supplies high quality milk to consumers. The BCDA has supported many community efforts to provide food to those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Contributions include a generous donation to Food Banks BC, and the coordination of dairy product donations totalling 40,000 liters of milk, 5200 kg of cheese, and 2700kg of butter. In addition, BCDA’s registered dietitians offer free nutrition education workshops to schoolteachers and health professionals all over British Columbia. By supporting vulnerable populations including children and youth, senior citizens, and new Canadians, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. was selected to be the recipient of $10,000 by the BCDA, as exemplifying the values of strengthening community ties, which is extremely important to BC dairy farmers. “BCDA has a common ground with dairy farmers to provide community support especially to seniors who are facing special challenges in obtaining food and care during the COVID-19 pandemic period. We are happy to support the vulnerable group and make a contribution for S.U.C.C.E.S.S. to provide timely services for them,” says Jeremy Dunn, General Manager of BCDA.

Grace Wong With a distinguished career of 36 years at the University of British Columbia, Grace Wong has served as Assistant Dean at the Sauder School of Business and as a Senior Advisor International in the Office of Provost and Vice-President Academic. Grace has contributed considerable volunteer services with S.U.C.C.E.S.S., serving on the Society Board from 2002 to 2006 and again from 2011 to 2018 including as Chair for two years. She believes that S.U.C.C.E.S.S. plays a vital role in guiding immigrants into the broader Canadian community, from the organization’s welcoming efforts at the airport to building careers, helping newcomers settle into new accommodations and become accustomed to life in Canada alongside their families. Grace is deeply impressed by the culturally appropriate services offered to seniors by S.U.C.C.E.S.S.: “My family experienced the high quality of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. seniors care as my mother-in-law was in the Simon K.Y. Lee Care Home for 4 years.” Born and raised in Vancouver, Grace always promotes the important work and programs offered by S.U.C.C.E.S.S for immigrants and seniors. As such, Grace encourages community and corporate supporters of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. to continue to give with their hearts to this wonderful organization.

Ways of Giving In addition to giving through annual events, donors can support S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation in the following ways:
Corporate Funding Corporate donations are a great way for companies to support S.U.C.C.E.S.S.’s services and programs and meet their social responsibility goals. Corporate donors can designate their support to specific S.U.C.C.E.S.S. programs such as family counselling, youth mentorship and seniors care. Major Gifts Major gifts to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation have an immediate impact. Tax-deductible receipts are available for cash gifts, gifts of securities and in-kind gifts (based on fair market value). Planned Gifts Planned gifts enable donors to leave a lasting legacy. Planned gifts can be made through wills, life insurance, trusts and annuities, and can provide significant tax and other financial benefits. Please consult with your financial and legal advisors to find a way that best suits you. Endowments Endowment gifts provide S.U.C.C.E.S.S. with a much-needed, stable source of funding. Funds are invested based on the investment policies of S.U.C.C.E.S.S.
