Brake rotors are the cast iron discs that the brake pads press against when the brakes are applied. The caliper is the component that houses the brake pads. When the brakes are applied, hydraulic pressure, created by the brake cylinder and booster, and transferred via the brake hose, actuates the piston within the caliper, which in turn forces the brake pads against the rotor. The resulting friction slows the vehicle down.
Brake master cylinder and brake booster are critical components in an automotive braking system. The brake master cylinder is responsible for creating the hydraulic pressure needed to activate the brakes when the brake pedal is pressed. The brake booster is a device that increases the pressure of the brake master cylinder, allowing the brakes to be activated with less effort from the driver.
The brake drum, wheel cylinder and brake shoes work together to create the necessary friction to bring the vehicle to a stop. The brake drum is located inside the wheel and houses the brake shoes. The brake shoes are metal arcs with friction material on one side that press against the brake drum when the brakes are applied. The resulting friction slows and stops the vehicle.
