s it just me, or has this year absolutely flown by? 2026 has been something of a whirlwind, and as we step into autumn and the final few months of the year — as scary as that sounds! — there’s a real sense of excitement about everything still to come. Of course, this season also arrives with some sadness following the loss of the wonderful Dolly Parton. More than an icon of music and style, Dolly seemed to possess that rare combination of wisdom, humour, warmth and genuine goodness. Closer to home, autumn means we are officially on the countdown to one of the biggest nights in our calendar — the Style of the City Awards. With preparations well underway for December, the excitement is certainly building. Every year, I’m reminded of just how special it is to bring so many brilliant people and businesses together under one roof and celebrate the talent we have right here in our city and beyond. And that brings me perfectly to our cover star, Rhys Doing Things — the Welsh comedy talent everyone’s talking about. We get to know the man behind the laughs as Rhys prepares to join us as one of this year’s Style of the City Awards hosts. I think you’re going to love getting to know him a little better. As always, this autumn edition is packed with everything you love about Style of the City — fashion, beauty, wellness, lifestyle, inspiring people and plenty of places worth discovering.

A world of artistry and innovation with FOPE The allure of Italian elegance can be hard to capture, yet FOPE manages to tell the stories of sun-soaked streets, indescribable style and true luxury. FOPE's gold jewellery has been perfected over the years, using a combination of skilled craftsmanship and innovative technology. The story of this iconic brand finds its roots in the beautiful Italian city of Vicenza, it was here in 1929 that Umberto Cazzola opened a goldsmith workshop and is where the family-run brand still calls home. Vicenza is one of Italy’s three historic jewellery-making centres, where gold craftsmanship is deeply rooted in tradition. PROPERTY
Women in Property: Dawn Taylor Personal Estate Agent, Dawn Taylor, talks about her experience and passion for the property industry.
I
started in property at nineteen. There were no portals, no social media, no digital marketing of any kind. What mattered then still matters now: people, trust, and understanding what a home really means to the person moving through its door.
14 Style of the city
Thirty-five years later, I still believe that. Only now the industry has changed almost beyond recognition, and my approach has had to become more considered, more strategic and more personal, not less. Building a career of this length as a woman in property has taught me patience. Trust in this industry is never given quickly.
It is earned steadily, client by client, through consistency rather than confidence alone, and that has shaped how I work today. I came into property within traditional agency structures and valued a great deal about that grounding. But over time I wanted to work with clients directly, from the
PROPERTY first conversation through to completion, without a sale being handed between different people along the way. One agent should see a client’s move from start to finish. Working independently also lets me operate in the way I care about most. Being Welsh and living in the Vale of Glamorgan, I am close to the community I belong to, covering Cardiff and the Vale with the depth of local knowledge that comes from being genuinely connected to an area and its people. Every property has a story. A cottage extended over generations. A new build on land with its own history. A penthouse bought for a fresh start. Understanding that story properly is where the real value of an agent lies. It shapes how a home is marketed, who it reaches, and what it ultimately achieves. Thirty-five years in this industry have taught me that the fundamentals never change, even when everything around them does. Honesty. Communication. Being there when it actually matters, not just at the point of instruction. Sellers and buyers can tell the difference between
" Thirty-five years in this industry have taught me that the fundamentals never change, even when everything around them does" an agent reciting a script and one who has genuinely done this for decades.
Experience and empathy are not opposites. The strongest agents need both.
If I could give one piece of advice to a woman considering a career in property, it would be this. Do not wait for permission to do things differently. Learn the industry properly, trust your judgement and never underestimate the value of understanding people.
I eventually chose a more independent path because I believed clients deserved something more personal than the industry usually offers. It was a decision that allowed me to build a business around my own standards and the way I believe people should be looked after. That experience has now brought me to another new chapter. I want to use what I have learned to encourage and support other women who can see a future for themselves in property. Property has given me a career I love and a community I am proud to serve. Being able to open the door a little wider for someone else feels like a natural next step. Dawn Taylor 07899 971786 dawn.taylor@expuk.com @dawn_theestateagent Style of the city 15

SAMANTHA B
BOUTIQUE 16 Years of Independent Style
T
here is something special about discovering an independent boutique that has truly stood the test of time. For the past 16 years, Samantha B Boutique has been welcoming customers through its doors in the picturesque village of Ewenny, building a reputation for timeless fashion, personal service and a wonderfully traditional approach to shopping. At the heart of the boutique is a belief that great style isn’t about following every passing trend. Instead, it’s about finding beautifully made pieces that suit the individual, inspire confidence and earn their place in your wardrobe season after season.
That philosophy is reflected in Samantha B’s carefully considered collection of labels, including Robell, Noen, Peruzzi, Foil, Orientique and Cream. From flattering everyday separates to statement pieces and sophisticated occasion wear, each collection is selected with real women and real wardrobes in mind. Perhaps most importantly, Samantha B offers the kind of personal shopping experience that has become increasingly rare. Honest advice, genuine conversation and an understanding of what customers actually want, have helped create a loyal clientele, with many returning
year after year. Over time, customers have become familiar faces and, in many cases, friends. This autumn/winter sees the boutique embrace the richness of the season, with chocolate brown, plum and warm, sumptuous tones taking centre stage — an elegant palette designed to carry wardrobes effortlessly into the cooler months. Sixteen years after opening its doors, Samantha B remains a celebration of everything we love about independent fashion: individuality, quality, community and service with a genuinely personal touch.

Rhys Doing Things: The Welsh comedy rising star who is just getting started From being made redundant twice to becoming a full-time content creator, Rhys Doing Things has built a loyal following with his sharply observed Welsh characters, everyday comedy and unmistakably Welsh sense of humour. Now, as he joins us as host of the Style of the City Awards, we meet the man behind the characters, and discover what’s next. By Emma Meese
26 Style of the city
COVER FEATURE " I am a professional people watcher and eavesdropper. I love nothing more than just sitting down listening to people"
You’re now a full-time content creator. How did that come about? So I am a content creator now full time, never used to be, now I am, got made redundant twice. So that’s my, that was my kick up the backside to start doing it full time. So that’s what I do now, been doing it for a year and a half.
How would you describe the kind of content that you do? Very Welsh and comedy focused mostly. A lot of comedy skits about the Welsh characters and people you see like everyday. It’s very everyday Welsh stuff. but I also like to do vlogs as well, food stuff, I love my food, absolutely love it. And yes, I think it’s mostly comedy, actually, love a bit of comedy, love it.
Is comedy something you’ve always had an interest in? Yes, always loved it. It’s funny ‘cause I don’t watch much comedy at all.
T
here is something immediately likeable about Rhys Doing Things. Perhaps it is the fact that, despite building what he describes as a slightly “culty” following, his comedy is rooted in something wonderfully ordinary: the people, characters and everyday moments that make Wales what it is. For Rhys, content creation wasn’t always the plan. After being made redundant twice, he found himself taking the leap
into doing it full time. A year and a half later, he has built a career around Welsh comedy, food, vlogs and the characters he encounters or, more accurately, he observes. And now he’s turning his attention to even bigger things, including a YouTube series, a Welsh mockumentary script and, as if he’s not busy enough, he’s starting Welsh lessons.
I think I like to be the comedy in a sense, like class clown type of vibes. I like to deliver the comedy. I don’t watch much of it. So it’s a bit strange, but I’ve always made scenarios, comedy scenarios and stuff. Then I found TikTok and content and stuff. that’s when I started like putting it all on camera basically, and people enjoying it. So I enjoy more cause people enjoy it
We sat down with Rhys to find out more about the man behind the videos. Style of the city 27
COVER FEATURE You’ve just signed up for Welsh lessons. What made you decide to learn?
" a lot of my characters, the inspiration comes from people I know mostly, or people I’ve seen around or know of"
I did. I can’t speak Welsh. Everyone assumes I can speak Welsh because of the accent, right? And they just come up to me and are like: ‘Ti’n siarad Cymraeg? (Do you speak Welsh?) And I’m like, no, I’m really sorry. But I decided to learn Welsh ‘cause I feel like since I started doing like Welsh comedy, Welsh content and stuff and it was very Welsh focused, loads of Welsh people watch me. I just feel like I wanna get more involved with that culture, Welsh culture. So yeah, I thought I’d just go for it.
Your characters are incredibly recognisable, and people often say, “Oh my God, this is you.” Where do you get your inspiration from?
And you’ve got a real cult following… It is a bit culty, but in a good way.
You’ve built a really loyal audience. What does that mean to you? People enjoy my stuff, which is great. And they kinda watch like anything I put out, which is amazing. And I bump into people who follow me as well and like my stuff, so that’s really nice as well.
What’s the plan for the future? Have you got things you’re working on that we should be watching out for? Yes, I’m working on a couple of bits. I’m working on a YouTube series with a good friend, Katie Owen. Also writing a script, hopefully one day maybe commissioned. We’ll see, I don’t know. That’s a mockumentary, all very Welsh. All the characters are Welsh, just proper good old Welsh comedy. In between, I’m just sort of doing these bits and bobs. Little jobs that I’ve been really enjoying. All stuff I’ve never done before, thought I’d never be able to do. So I’m just really enjoying it. Just see what comes up in the future, really.

I am a professional people watcher and eavesdropper. I love nothing more than just sitting down listening to people. I wanna go back to the valleys cause I live in Pembrokeshire now. I wanna go back to the valleys and always hear earwigging. I love listening to people. I think people are just so funny. But a lot of my characters, the inspiration comes from people I know mostly, or people I’ve seen around or know of. Like the mother character’s my auntie, the nan’s obviously my nan. And there’s just like loads of characters there that you can say, you can pinpoint everybody, cause you can relate somewhere to who these characters are. But yeah, it’s all mostly people I know and they’re all from the valleys.
COVER FEATURE So many of your characters feel familiar. Is that because they’re based on real people? Yes, but yeah, it’s all mostly people I know and they’re all from the valleys.
We’re really excited to have you as the host of the Style of the City Awards with Justine. What can people expect from you two this year? A good laugh, proper good banter between us, a good giggle. I think we have hell of a laugh from start to finish. So I’m really, really looking forward to it. And we can just see we’ll have a scream. Big energy.
You’ve moved from the Rhondda to Pembrokeshire. Was there a particular reason for the move? I did. Yes. So, my partner’s from Pembrokeshire and I’ve been down there for nine years now. I bump into people in Pembrokeshire they’re like, what are you doing down here? And I’m like, I live here, thank you very much. And I’ve done for nine years, but they always assume I’m from the valleys but say ‘oh, you’re not on holiday?’ and I’m like, no, I live over there.
It’s not even like they can be like a funny person, it’s just the delivery of the way they tell things, say a story, anything. I just think the delivery of Welsh people is just comedy genius. And I just like to pull out that inspiration for my content.
You’re one of the biggest rising stars in Welsh content. Is there anyone who has inspired you? Oh yeah. I’ll go for my biggest inspiration. I think she’s a comedy genius and really underrated. Julia Davis. Plays Dawn in and Gavin and Stacey. Her writing is actually amazing. She’s got multiple shows she’s written over the years. I just think she’s a comedy genius. And she’s like my biggest inspiration. And Diane Morgan as well. I think she’s fantastic.

It’s going to be exciting watching his next chapter unfold. And if his promise of “a good proper laugh with big energy” is anything to go by, the Style of the City Awards in December this year is going to be a night to remember.
You do a lot of work in Cardiff too. Are you here often? I’m here like every week. The mileage is killing me, ha ha ha.
What is it about Wales that you think is so central to your comedy? It’s the people, the characters. I think Welsh people in general are just so funny.

The joy OF BEING A BEGINNER AGAIN People often talk about starting over as though it’s something to fear. As though by the time we reach our fifties, we’ve chosen our path and should quietly stick to it until retirement. I couldn’t disagree more. By Emma Meese
T
here’s something quietly exhilarating about being a beginner again.
About saying yes to an opportunity before you know where it might lead. Swapping certainty for possibility and trusting that your life experience will help you figure it out. Yes, it’s scary. I’ve had plenty of wobbles over the past few months. Who wouldn’t? Being made redundant has just brought a chapter of my life to an unexpected close.
32 Style of the city
One I had just started to find stability in after divorce. When we lose stability it’s only natural to question what comes next. There are moments when staying where you are feels so much safer than stepping into the unknown. But staying still means you never discover what’s waiting behind the next door. I believe the Universe puts us in this position, forcing us to explore options we would never consider from a position of safety and security.
That’s where I find myself now. For years, alongside a demanding career as a journalist, tv producer/ director and the Director of Independent Journalism at Cardiff University, I’ve been immersed in the world of social media and content creation.
Building audiences for myself, influencers, businesses and brands. Being creative and keeping up with constantly evolving tech and platforms have kept me occupied and happy.
BEAUTY & WELLNESS What started as a passion project, squeezed into evenings and weekends, is now Paper Aeroplane Content Creation Studio. I’m taking these recent changes as a sign for this sideline to step out from the wings and take centre stage.
Social media and content creation might be seen as a young person’s game, but the irony is I’ve been here almost since the beginning.
The telephone directory was my best friend. Back then, getting a good story meant walking to speak to people and knocking on a door. We even rang the post office landline to ask the postman to deliver a message. While technology has changed beyond recognition people have stayed the same. They still connect with stories. They still respond to authenticity. They still buy from people they trust. Over the years, I’ve trained thousands of people to use social media with purpose. I’ve taught them how to shoot and edit incredible content on their smartphones and given them the confidence to create something they’re genuinely proud of. Platforms come and go. Algorithms change. Trends disappear almost as quickly as they arrive. Good storytelling doesn’t.
Twenty years ago, when people were still poking each other on Facebook and thought Twitter was a noise that birds made, I became one of the BBC’ first ever social media producers. There was no Instagram, TikTok or Substack. Just the early adopters experimenting with a world of digital communication in the aftermath of Friends Reunited. When I started as a journalist more than 30 years ago, the tools of my trade were my notepad, a pen and my feet. There were no mobile phones and no Google.
It’s the single thread that has continued throughout my entire career. It’s easy to look at the generations who have grown up in a completely digital world and wonder whether you can compete. But I’ve realised I don’t need to.
That’s the wonderful thing about being a beginner again at this stage of life. You’re not starting from scratch, you’re starting with experience. Experience isn't something you leave behind when you become a beginner again. It's the reason you're ready. So yes, this wasn't the ending I expected. But perhaps that's the point. The best chapters rarely begin exactly as we've planned them. If I've learnt anything over the years, it's that staying still might feel safe but it rarely leads anywhere interesting. Sometimes all it takes is the courage to open one more door.
You never really know what's waiting on the other side.
I know what I’m good at. I know stories. I know audiences. I know what makes people stop scrolling and pay attention. And I have more than three decades of experience to draw on. Style of the city 33

What If Therapy Didn't Mean Talking in Circles? Award-winning Integrative Therapist Ruth John explains why understanding your nervous system, not just your thoughts, is the key to finally feeling like yourself again.
M
any of us arrive at therapy completely exhausted. When you are navigating grief, trauma, a life-changing diagnosis, or severe burnout, the greatest challenge often isn't a lack of insight. It’s the unsettling feeling that you no longer recognise yourself. Your confidence disappears, your body feels unfamiliar, and just getting through an everyday routine can feel like climbing a mountain. Often, people hope a traditional therapist will just listen to their story and hand them the answers. But female founder and Integrative Therapist Ruth John believes the future of emotional wellbeing requires a radically different approach.

" My job is to help your system finally feel safe enough to put that heavy load down"
"When people are exhausted, the last thing they need is to sit in a room and endlessly re-live their story, trying to 'think' their way into feeling better," Ruth explains. "Rather than just asking, 'How are you feeling today?' and expecting you to have all the answers, I look at what your nervous system is holding onto. You don’t need fixing, because you aren't broken. Your mind and body have adapted to survive incredibly hard things. My job is to help your system finally feel safe enough to put that heavy load down." Following her own profound experiences with grief, trauma, and long-term health conditions, Ruth retrained and founded Reset Wellbeing, a dedicated, secluded studio based in Barry. Today, clients travel from across Wales and the South of England to experience her unique, nervous system-led approach.
At the heart of her practice is the signature 12-Week Reset Wellbeing Programme. Rather than a traditional model where you vent for an hour and leave, Ruth’s programme provides a structured, deeply supportive roadmap. Combining therapeutic coaching with practical nervous system methods, she takes the guesswork out of feeling more joy.
BEAUTY & WELLNESS The results and 5-star reviews speak for themselves. Clients who have felt "stuck" for years frequently describe:

Reset Wellbeing is grounded in a beautifully simple, forgiving philosophy: there is wisdom in every response you have. The anxious part of you, the peoplepleaser, the part that stays busy, or the perfectionist, they didn't appear by accident. They developed to protect you. "When we begin to look at these parts of ourselves with curiosity rather than judgment, a massive shift happens," Ruth says. "We stop fighting ourselves and start working with ourselves. And that doesn't just change how you feel in a therapy room; it completely changes how you live your life." Alongside her highly soughtafter private practice, Reset Wellbeing offers sell-out
signature Breathwork, therapeutic Sound Therapy, restorative retreats, and guided sauna rituals in a stunning outdoor contrast therapy space. Ruth also delivers accredited practitioner training and corporate wellbeing programmes, helping organisations understand the vital link between the nervous system and human performance. “ In an era where luxury is increasingly defined by wellness rather than excess, red light collagen body therapy feels perfectly timed” natural processes responsible for renewal, repair and collagen production. The result isn’t skin that looks ‘treated’—it’s skin that appears healthier, brighter and unmistakably more alive. For the complexion, the benefits are beautifully cumulative. With regular sessions, skin appears firmer, smoother and more luminous, while the appearance of fine lines softens and hydration improves. Rather than masking age, red light therapy celebrates skin functioning at its optimum—restoring the fresh, resilient quality that so often defines youthful skin.
Its appeal extends far beyond the face. Full-body collagen light therapy has become a sought-after addition to modern wellness routines, supporting skin quality across areas that often receive far less attention— the neck, décolletage, arms, abdomen and legs. As collagen naturally declines with age (35+), maintaining skin integrity becomes just as important below the jawline as above it. Perhaps one of its most exciting applications within this technology lies in scalp and hair health. Healthy hair begins beneath the surface, and emerging research suggests that red light therapy helps
create an environment in which hair follicles can function more effectively, supporting stronger, healthier-looking hair as part of a comprehensive hair restoration programme. There is also something wonderfully luxurious about the simplicity of the experience itself. Twenty five minutes of uninterrupted stillness. No discomfort. No recovery. Simply time dedicated to both beauty and wellbeing—a rare combination in today’s relentlessly fast-paced world. At House of Muse Spa, our new Collagen Bed has been introduced with precisely this philosophy. You Do Not Need Permission. Three ways to stop waiting and start building the life you actually want. 1. Name the thing you're avoiding out loud Procrastination rarely comes from laziness. It comes from vagueness. "I want things to be different" is a feeling, not a plan - and feelings are easy to postpone indefinitely. Get specific. Say the actual thing, out loud or on paper: the business you want to start, the relationship you need to leave, the career you're ready to walk away from. Vague dreams stay vague forever. Named ones start demanding action.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS 2. Shrink the first step until it's impossible to avoid The step that feels too big is the one you'll keep circling for months. So don't take it. Take the step ten times smaller - one email, one call, one hour blocked in a diary. Momentum comes from tiny, unglamorous actions repeated daily, not one dramatic leap. Every reinvention I've coached a woman through started with something small.
3. I nterrupt the pattern, not just the problem Most of us try to fix the outcome the job, the relationship, the body - without touching the habit or belief keeping us stuck in it. Ask yourself: what am I doing on repeat that keeps recreating this same result? Change that pattern, and the outcome changes with it. This is the piece willpower always misses.
Why this works This isn't positive thinking. It's coaching psychology in practice the method I use daily with women rebuilding after divorce, burnout and redundancy, and with founders and
senior corporate women achieving real success without paying the price for it. I know it works because I've lived it myself. Wanting more isn't the problem. Not knowing how to build it is. That's the gap this closes - real strategy, real psychology, zero fluff. I'm Rhian Lindley, a Reinvention Strategist, Retreat Host and Accredited Coach, and this is the work I do every day: walking beside women as they rebuild, at exactly the moments life has asked the most of them.

Sole Serenity Reflexology Reflexology in the comfort of your own home.
As people seek more natural paths to wellness, Sole Serenity Reflexology is here to guide you on your journey. I bring foot and facial reflexology directly to your doorstep, making it easy to nurture your wellbeing even with a busy lifestyle. With flexible evening and weekend appointments, you can carve out precious moments to relax, restore balance, and truly care for yourself.
What is reflexology? It is a form of holistic treatment which is based on the idea that there are particular reflex areas on the feet, hands, face and ears that correspond to different parts of the body and various organs. Reflexologists try to help the body achieve its natural balance and promote general wellbeing by giving gentle pressure and using special techniques on these reflex areas. A great many people find reflexology to be very relaxing and include it as part of their self-care. Reflexology has so many wonderful benefits, including alleviating headaches and migraines, stress and anxiety, the symptoms of menopause and problems with sleep.

For twenty years, I worked in an law firm, where a monthly visit from a reflexologist sparked my fascination with how much our feet can reveal about our wellbeing. Years later, while searching for college courses for my daughter, I stumbled upon reflexology again and felt inspired to enrol in the Level 3 VTCT Reflexology course. I have now completed the Ziggie Bergman Facial Reflexology Course and will soon be offering lifting reflexology treatments, often called the non-surgical facelift. Ask
DR ANNE Dr Anne Alison of Vale Wellness answers your questions. Supporting your health at every stage of life.
Q1. Perimenopause & Food “ I am a perimenopausal woman. What can I eat to help improve my symptoms?” Perimenopause is one of the most transformative — and misunderstood — chapters in a woman’s life. Fluctuating oestrogen and progesterone can bring hot flushes, disrupted sleep, brain fog, mood swings, and weight changes. The good news is that what you put on your plate has a profound impact on how you feel. Start with the principle of eating the rainbow. Brightly coloured vegetables and fruits. Think deep leafy greens, purple cabbage, orange sweet potato, red peppers and blueberries. All are packed with phytonutrients and antioxidants that support hormonal detoxification through the liver. Aim for at least seven to ten portions of varied plant foods every day. 44 Style of the city
Phytoestrogens are plant compounds that gently bind to oestrogen receptors and can take the edge off fluctuating hormone levels. The richest sources are: • Legumes & pulses: lentils, chickpeas, edamame, and kidney beans are excellent daily staples • Flaxseeds: ground flaxseed sprinkled on porridge or yoghurt is one of the most potent sources of lignans — a type of phytoestrogen with particular benefit for hot flushes • Organic soy: tofu, tempeh, and miso contain isoflavones and are wellstudied for symptom relief
A low-inflammatory diet is your best friend through perimenopause. Chronic inflammation amplifies hormonal symptoms and raises the risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis — both of which become more relevant after menopause. Prioritise oily fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel) twice a week for omega-3 fatty acids, extra virgin olive oil as your cooking fat of choice, and reduce ultra-processed foods, refined sugars, and alcohol. Bone health deserves special mention. As oestrogen falls, bone density can drop rapidly. Calciumrich whole foods — dairy or fortified plant milks, tahini, almonds, and dark leafy greens — combined with vitamin D (ideally tested and supplemented if deficient) are important. Magnesium glycinate is also worth considering to support sleep, reduce anxiety, and aid muscle relaxation. Alongside these, a good-quality B-complex and omega-3 supplement round out a sensible perimenopausal stack for many women Finally, priotise lean protein. Hormonal changes accelerate muscle loss in the perimenopausal years. Aim for 1.2–1.6 g of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, spread across meals. Eggs, Greek yoghurt, legumes, fish, chicken, and cottage cheese are all excellent choices that also support stable blood sugar — which in turn helps reduce mood swings and energy crashes.
Q2. Nutrition After a Breast Cancer Scare “ I have recently had a breast cancer scare. What can I eat to boost my health and reduce my risk of cancer?” First, a reassuring word: the evidence is clear that diet and lifestyle can meaningfully influence cancer risk. While no single food prevents or causes cancer, the cumulative effect of your daily choices — over months and years — really does matter. A plant-based, anti-inflammatory whole food diet is the foundation of cancer-protective eating. The World Cancer Research Fund consistently finds that the highest vegetable and fibre intakes are associated with reduced breast cancer risk. Eat the rainbow with intention: cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale) contain sulforaphane, a compound shown in research to support the body’s own cancer-defence pathways. Aim for them four to five times a week. Lignans deserve a specific mention here. Found in flaxseeds, sesame seeds, and wholegrains, lignans are metabolised by gut bacteria into enterolignans — compounds that maybe associated with a reduced risk of oestrogen-receptor positive breast cancer. A tablespoon of ground flaxseed daily is a simple,
evidence-backed addition to your diet. This is one area where the term ‘oestropolone’ is sometimes used — referring to the beneficial plant oestrogens and lignans that help modulate oestrogen activity rather than stimulate it. Reduce your exposure to dietary oestrogen disruptors by choosing organic where possible, particularly for the ‘dirty dozen’ fruits and vegetables, and minimising plastic food packaging. Alcohol is one of the most well-established dietary risk factors for breast cancer — even moderate intake raises risk, so reducing or eliminating it is one of the most impactful steps you can take. Build meals around healthy whole foods: beans and lentils several times a week for their fibre and phytoestrogen content; wholegrains such as oats, brown rice, and quinoa; nuts and seeds; and good quality protein at every meal. Limit red and processed meat. In terms of supplements, vitamin D insufficiency is strongly linked to poorer cancer outcomes — get your levels checked and supplement to maintain a level of 100–150 nmol/L. Curcumin (from turmeric), green tea catechins, and a high-quality omega-3 are worth discussing with your GP or integrative clinician. A diverse, fibre-rich gut microbiome is also emerging as critically important in oestrogen metabolism, so a daily prebiotic (leeks, garlic, oats, flaxseed) and probiotic-rich foods (live yoghurt, kefir, kimchi) are a sound investment.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS Q3. P rotecting Muscle on Mounjaro “ I am on Mounjaro and the weight is coming off, but what should I be eating to reduce the risk of muscle loss that I have been reading about?” This is one of the most important questions our nutritionists receive for anyone on a GLP-1 receptor against such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide). These medications are genuinely remarkable — but because they suppress appetite so effectively, there is a real risk of losing muscle mass and bone density alongside fat if nutrition isn’t carefully managed. Studies suggest that without adequate protein and resistance exercise, a significant proportion of weight lost on GLP-1 medications can
come from lean muscle tissue rather than fat. That matters enormously for long-term metabolic health, strength, and ageing well.
Protein is your most powerful tool. When overall calorie intake drops substantially, the body needs a higher relative protein intake to preserve muscle. Aim for a minimum of 1.6–2.0 g of protein per kilogram of your target body weight per day — and spread this across three to four meals and snacks, as the body can only utilise around 25–40 g for muscle protein synthesis at one time. Focus on protein-dense foods that are also easy to eat when appetite is low: • Animal proteins: eggs, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, chicken breast, salmon, tuna, turkey, and low-fat dairy • Plant proteins: edamame, lentils, chickpeas, tofu, tempeh, and black beans • Convenient options: a good-quality organic whey or pea protein shake can be invaluable when solid food feels unappealing
Alongside protein, leucine is the key amino acid that ‘switches on’ muscle protein synthesis. It’s found in highest quantities in whey protein, eggs, chicken, fish, and dairy. Ensure each meal contains a leucine-rich source. Don’t neglect healthy whole foods and micronutrients. When eating less overall, nutritional density becomes critical. Every meal should count. Pulses and legumes are particularly valuable — they provide protein, fibre, magnesium, iron, and zinc in one package, and their slow-release carbohydrate helps maintain stable energy and blood sugar. Colourful vegetables and berries provide antioxidants that support muscle recovery and reduce inflammation. Key supplements to consider alongside Mounjaro include creatine monohydrate (3–5 g daily), — one of the most robustly evidenced supplements for preserving and building muscle mass, particularly during calorie restriction ( I also find this really significantly improves my brain fog) and recommend it to many patients and staff ) Vitamin D, magnesium, omega-3, and a good multivitamin help fill any nutritional gaps. If you are losing weight rapidly, it is also worth discussing zinc and B12 levels with your clinician. Finally, resistance exercise is the essential partner to good nutrition on weight loss medication. Even two to three sessions of weight-bearing or strength training per week makes a substantial difference to how much of your weight loss comes from fat versus muscle and improves the appearance of loose skin. Eat your protein, lift something heavy, and watch both your body composition and your confidence transform.

MAISON DE CHEZ Luxury sportswear & loungewear designed for real life
Style of the City gets familiar with Maison De Chez, the new lifestyle brand combining understated luxury, comfort and versatility — created by its Welsh founder, Cherrelle.
48 Style of the city
BEAUTY & WELLNESS A new chapter began on the sidelines. Maison De Chez was born... Funny where new chapters begin. For me, MDC started on the sidelines of a football pitch. A mum. 40. And a new chapter. Spending what felt like half my life standing beside freezingcold rugby and football pitches. Somewhere between muddy touchlines, takeaway coffees and endless grassroots games, I had an idea. Why can’t the sideline be beautiful, luxurious and practical? I wanted something comfortable and stylish. A little bit of luxury. Something I’d genuinely want to wear, carry
" I wanted something comfortable and stylish"
and use beside me — whether I was at football, rugby, at the park or simply living my busy mum life. And that’s where MDC began... What makes it even more exciting is seeing that my little idea is already starting to resonate. Maison de Chez is gaining traction, welcoming new customers and, most importantly, seeing people genuinely fall in love with what i'm creating. What started as an idea on the sidelines is now becoming a brand. And there’s something pretty special about watching that happen. Every follow. Every order. Every recommendation. Every person who tells a friend about MDC They all mean something when you’re building from the very beginning.
Because this isn’t a brand that appeared overnight. It started with a mum, a pitch, a slightly random idea and a desire to make everyday life feel a little more beautiful. This is very much the beginning. And if this is where the story starts, I can’t wait to see where it goes. Thank you for being here early. Launching September 2026

ucked away in the heart of South Wales, a stone's throw away from Cardiff, Lanelay Hall Hotel & Spa feels like one of those hidden gems you almost want to keep to yourself. Beautifully renovated over the years, this historic country house combines character and heritage with contemporary luxury, creating an escape that feels a world away from everyday life. From the moment we arrived, the experience felt special. A gorgeous gift waiting for us was such a thoughtful touch, before changing into the most comfortable black robes and beginning an afternoon dedicated entirely to switching off.

The spa genuinely exceeded my expectations. Peaceful, intimate and beautifully designed, it immediately encourages you to slow down. My massage treatment was wonderful and only added to that feeling of having temporarily escaped somewhere else. Despite being relatively close to home, it genuinely felt like being on holiday — exactly what I needed.
The interiors were incredible: elegant, characterful and sympathetic to the history of the building, creating the perfect backdrop for a traditional afternoon tea isn’t simply a luxury; it is crucial to my self-care routine. Giving yourself permission to step away, recharge and reconnect with friends can make such a difference.
Afternoon tea was another highlight. We enjoyed ours in the Lady Mary Coles Room, and even the name feels as though it belongs in an episode of Downton Abbey. The interiors were incredible: elegant, characterful and sympathetic to the history of the building, creating the perfect backdrop for a traditional afternoon tea with the most gorgeous flowers. Beautifully presented food, gorgeous surroundings and time spent catching up with friends made it feel wonderfully indulgent. The service throughout deserves a special mention too. Every member of staff we encountered was warm, attentive and genuinely welcoming. Nothing felt rushed, and there was a lovely sense of being looked after from beginning to end.
Lanelay Hall provided the perfect setting to do exactly that. From the beautiful interiors and exceptional spa to the thoughtful details, wonderful afternoon tea and attentive service, it was a little pocket of escapism right on our doorstep.

A Total Transformation Natalie’s Style Journey with Love Your Look
N
atalie shares her experience, working with Nicole, Founder of Love Your Look, and how it’s transformed her wardrobe and confidence.
What made you book in for an image transformation in the first place? After having two children close together, I realised that my wardrobe no longer reflected the life or the body I have today. My old clothes didn’t fit the same, I wasn’t excited when I opened my wardrobe, and generally I just felt that I was making do with what I had. Following
52 Style of the city
maternity leave, I also had more work commitments in London. With this in mind, I knew I really needed a refresh of my work wardrobe with help from an expert so I could feel confident and better reflect my leadership role.
What did you want to achieve with your image and do you feel you have achieved this now? I wanted to feel more confident and attractive, be excited to get dressed whatever the occasion, and move away from my leggings and jumper combo that I had adopted while post-partum. I
also wanted to be clear on how to dress and shop for myself so that I didn’t waste money any more.
After the 8 weeks of working together how are you feeling about your image and wardrobe today? When looking at what’s coming up in my calendar, I no longer, “Oh god, what am I going to wear for that? I need to buy something quickly”, I’ve moved to “I can’t wait to wear this, it will look great”. This applies to work events, girls nights, family trips with the kids.
BEAUTY & WELLNESS How has it changed the way you shop and invest in your wardrobe going forward? I am shopping with a goal in mind, taking the time to fill in gaps in my wardrobe. I’m very much focused on quality and versatility over quantity and one-time wears which has been a big shift for me. The whole experience hasn’t been overwhelming at all. It’s actually been really assuring and uplifting. Nicole has walked me through it all with each session having a clear focus and objective, giving me her honest truth at every stage, which I greatly appreciated.
How is this going to impact your life going forward? I didn’t realise how big of an impact Nicole’s programme would have on me personally. I now feel like an elevated version of myself, not a completely different person, and that’s what I wanted. I now know how to style myself and I have a capsule wardrobe of quality pieces into endless outfits. What I gained from the 8-week programme I wouldn’t have been able to figure out on my own and if I did, it would have taken me years of trial and error.
What’s been the biggest change you’ve embraced since going through this? There are three main takeaways for me:
1. Living in clothes that are the wrong colour, shape, size, fit, fabric for me is doing myself a disservice. Even a few small tweaks makes the world of difference.
2.
What would you say to other women who are thinking of investing in their image? You are worth investing in. Your image isn’t just what everyone else sees and judges you on, it’s how you feel and show up for yourself every single day. Taking the time to get that right will benefit you for years to come in every aspect of your life. It can be easy to spend money on your home, activities, children and then leave yourself last. Spend the money on yourself and you genuinely won’t regret it. I certainly don’t! Want to have an experience like Natalie’s? Book a free style discovery call via the QR code below.
You don’t have to spend a fortune to achieve the look you want and you’re never too old for a reset. I’m 34, not 84 and thanks to Nicole, I’m motivated to be the best version of me every day!
3. You have to shop with intention rather than spur of the moment. I also recognise shiny object syndrome before I go to pay which will save me a fortune!
The whole experience hasn’t been overwhelming at all. It’s actually been really assuring and uplifting.

ometimes, the best escapes aren’t about travelling far — they’re simply about switching off and spending proper time with the people you love. Tucked away in the Welsh countryside and close to the River Taff, Garth Glamping gave my daughter and I exactly that. We visited towards the end of the summer holidays, and it was the perfect opportunity to slow everything down, have fun and make some memories together.

Tucked away in the Welsh countryside and close to the River Taff
Our glamping tent was spotlessly clean, with a comfortable bed and everything we needed for a cosy stay. We also loved the Garth Glamping hooded towels — particularly my daughter, who practically lived in hers! There was plenty to keep us entertained. We played games together, including outdoor target archery, went for walks and enjoyed simply being outside. Even getting our fire started became part of the
The setting itself is beautiful. With the River Taff nearby and countryside all around you, there’s a real sense of peace to Garth Glamping. Owner Jordan was also incredibly hands-on throughout our stay — kind, friendly and genuinely keen to make sure we were comfortable and having a wonderful time. But more than anything, what I’ll remember is the time together. We laughed, played games, walked, talked and enjoyed each other’s company without the usual distractions. It was exactly what we needed and such a lovely way to bring our summer holidays to a close.
fun — it took a little teamwork, but once we had it going, sitting beside our roaring fire and toasting marshmallows became one of the highlights of our stay.
The Style Review verdict? Clean, cosy, peaceful and full of character, Garth Glamping is a wonderful Welsh escape — and proof that sometimes the most memorable adventures can be found surprisingly close to home.
As evening arrived, the little details really came into their own. Fairy lights along the front of the tent added to the cosy atmosphere, and with the fire going and the peaceful countryside surrounding us, it felt wonderfully removed from everyday life. Another highlight was the new wellness area. The sauna was incredible, and we even braved the cold plunge — although I’ll admit I didn’t quite manage the full immersion! COOKING & TRAVEL Cooking with the Harvest Season
At Home with
Angela Gray This time of year always brings a different energy for me, as I know there is much to do in the kitchen. With the ripeness of so many lovely ingredients all peaking at once, discipline is needed in order to make the most of the bountiful harvest, especially if you are going to preserve some of the goodies.
I
have always felt that autumn never fails to present many opportunities. For instance, a lovely autumnal walk to go blackberry picking can provide both exercise, and just what you need for making a jam, or a seedless preserved jelly. Coupled with apples, make a crumble or pie and serve with piping hot custard. You could also make a Creme de Mure, a heady French liqueur made by steeping the fruit in red wine overnight, then cooking it with sugar to create a syrup concentrate, topping it up with brandy to finish. Serve a shot with cheese or a fruit dessert, or add to a reduced sauce for rich meats like lamb, duck and game, it’s so delicious with bubbles.

COOKING & TRAVEL Harvest Curry
Perfect for Making a Couple of Days in Advance
Ingredients: •
Sunflower oil for frying
• 1 large aubergine or 2 large red peppers, cubed • 1 small cauliflower cut into bitesized pieces •
300g pumpkin/squash, cubed
• 2 medium onions, thinly sliced •
2 tsp chopped ginger
•
4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
• 3 green ‘finger’ chillies, chopped •
1 tsp turmeric
•
2 tbsp medium curry powder
• 500g tinned, chopped tomatoes •
300ml vegetable stock
•
200ml coconut cream
•
2 tbsp thick greek yoghurt
• 2 stems fresh curry leaves to finish - optional • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice & a small sprinkle of coriander
What You Do: 1. Line a large roasting tin with baking paper. Scatter the aubergine, cauliflower & squash, drizzle with 2 tablespoons of oil and mix through to coat. Sprinkle in 1 rounded tsp of sea salt & mix again. 2. Cover with foil & roast in the oven at 180C fan/gas 6 for 35 minutes. Remove the foil and cook for a further 15-20 minutes until the vegetables are slightly golden. Note: turn the vegetables half way through the last stage so they colour evenly. 3. Meanwhile, make the curry sauce base. Heat 3 tbsp of oil in a large pan, add the onions. stir through, add 2 tbsp of water and cover witha lid. 4. Sauté until soft and lightly golden. Add the ginger, garlic and chilli, stir through and cook for 1 minute. Add the curry powder and cook for another minute. Tip the roasted vegetables into the pan, stir through, then add the tomatoes and stock. Simmer together for 25 minutes with the lid off, so the sauce thickens. 5. To finish, stir in the coconut and yoghurt, followed by the curry leaves if using. Taste and season accordingly. I usually add the lemon juice, a sprinkle of sea salt so the flavour of the curry tastes really savoury- you may need a little more of both depending on your vegetables.

1/4 tsp asafoetida
•
Sea salt
•
Sunflower oil for frying
What you do 1. Soak the dal in water for 3 hours, then drain. To create the glue for the mixture, tip 1/3 of the dal into a food processor and whizz until broken down into a paste. WEDDING GUIDE
Two destinations. Endless possibilities. For decades, luxury weddings have followed a familiar blueprint. A set ceremony space. A formal wedding breakfast. A reception that unfolds much the same way from one celebration to the next. But the wedding landscape is evolving. That shift has inspired the most significant evolution in the Oldwalls Collection’s history. Following extensive research with engaged couples, newlyweds, suppliers and industry experts, one message became clear: couples weren’t looking to replace tradition, they simply wanted more choice.
66 Style of the city
The timeless white wedding remains as desirable as ever. The difference is that today’s couples expect the flexibility to make it their own, creating a celebration that reflects their personalities, priorities and style. Whether that means exchanging vows at 5pm, dining beneath the stars or reimagining the traditional flow of the day, the emphasis is no longer on following a formula it’s on
WEDDING GUIDE Not every couple want to follow the traditional format, our new concepts give couples the freedom to rewrite the rulebook, don’t fancy a sit-down formal meal, no problem!” The photographs featured here offer an exclusive first look at that transformation. More than styled inspiration, they showcase real concepts that will soon become part of the Oldwalls Collection,. . creating a celebration that’s entirely their own. After all, it’s their day, and they should make the rules. Rather than introducing another package, the Oldwalls Collection has reimagined the wedding experience by expanding the possibilities. At Fairyhill and Sant Ffraed House the result is a collection of brand new concepts, timing formats and styling options to give couples more flexibility than ever before. Picture woodland ceremonies beneath the trees, elegant alfresco dining on the Georgian Terrace, relaxed
lounge spaces for cocktails, interactive food experiences, including quirky street food vans and celebrations that flow effortlessly between beautiful indoor and outdoor settings.
Luxury is no longer defined solely by tradition. Increasingly, it’s defined by freedom the freedom to choose, to personalise and to celebrate in a way that feels authentic.
New styling concepts, brand new food and drink menus, flexible layouts and immersive entertainment have all been designed to create celebrations that feel relaxed, luxurious and deeply personal. Shakira Obaid, Commercial Director Said: “It’s not about changing what couples love; it’s about giving them more choice, more flexibility and more possibilities.
The Oldwalls Collection isn’t rewriting the rules of the wedding day. It’s simply giving couples more ways to write on their own. Follow them on socials or visit the website for more information set to be announced later this summer. Oliver J Photography Marc Smith Photography

Hilary Brown, Chair of the South Wales Jamaica Society and a prominent advocate for the Windrush Generation, coordinated the event to highlight stories and contributions that are often overlooked.
Windrush Day is an annual event on the 22nd June to honour migrants' contributions to the post-war economy, celebrating the day HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Dock. The UK called on the ‘Empire’ to help rebuild a country devastated by WW2.
CULTURE & COMMUNITY Kinishka Narayan MP, Carys Stallard, Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, and Sian Thomas, Mayor of Barry Town Council, attended in their official capacities. Many established families attended, and individuals who contributed to life in the UK received special recognition. The family of Larry Taylor Snr was among those honoured. He emigrated from Jamaica, settled in Barry, raised eight children, and contributed significantly through work and volunteerism. The evening also saw one of Barry’s oldest Windrush

pioneers, Mrs McClaggon, who also shared her experiences of facing racism, hostility, and prejudice upon arriving in Barry. Global reggae artists Tenna Star and Claire Angel performed for the audience, while acclaimed actors directed by Jannette Barrett presented a reenactment of ‘Merlina Pearl the Musical’. The following day, Claire Angel visited local historical sites in Barry to film content for her upcoming album. The event also marked the launch of Caribbean Community Wales, a new group dedicated to uniting people across Wales to celebrate Caribbean history and culture. South Wales Jamaica Society acknowledges the Welsh Government for providing a grant to support Windrush celebrations. The Society looks forward to collaborating with Caribbean Community Wales to ensure that ‘Working better together’ becomes a reality.

Property Talk Your Property Questions Answered Property expert Dawn Taylor shares her top tips and expert insight into buying and selling across Cardiff & the Vale
Q1.
Q2.
Q3.
Is now a good time to sell in Cardiff and the Vale?
Why are some homes selling quickly while others sit on the market?
Should a seller accept an offer below the asking price?
For the right seller, yes. Wales is still showing annual price growth and Cardiff has remained comparatively resilient, but this is not a market where every home succeeds automatically. Buyers have more choice and are comparing value carefully. A well-presented home, launched at a credible price and supported by a clear strategy, can still attract serious interest. That preparation should begin before the photographs are taken, with the likely buyer, the competition and the launch plan all considered properly. The better question is not simply whether the market is good. It is whether your home is properly prepared to compete in it.
Because buyers decide on value very quickly. Pricing determines whether the right people see a home. Presentation determines whether they stop and look. Communication and follow-up turn that interest into an offer. In a market with more choice, launching too high can cost a property its strongest period of attention. Once buyers have seen repeated reductions, it becomes harder to recreate the impact of a confident first launch. I would always rather recommend an honest starting price with a clear plan than promise a figure the market is unlikely to support.
Not without looking at the full position. The highest offer is not always the strongest one. I would want to know whether the buyer is financially qualified, whether they have a property to sell, how complete their chain is and whether their timescale suits the seller. A slightly lower offer from a proceedable buyer can be worth more than a higher figure surrounded by uncertainty. That is why qualifying the buyer properly matters just as much as negotiating the price. Good negotiation is about protecting the whole move, not just chasing one number.
Q4. Should buyers wait for mortgage rates to fall further? Trying to time the market perfectly can leave buyers waiting while the right home passes them by. Speak to a mortgage adviser early, understand what is affordable now and leave room in the budget for change. If the finances are comfortable and the property works for your life, that is a stronger basis for a decision than trying to predict the next interestrate move.
