5 star rating from CalQualityCare & U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)

Doug Hawkins RN (Administrator) and Carole Mann LVN (Medicare Specialist)

We Make Home Visits Our Goal is Continuity of Care We ensure that when residents are discharged home their care continues to match the care received at Western Slope. Upon discharge Doug and Carole will come visit in about one week. “I enjoy following the patient from the hospital environment and into their homes. It’s rewarding to see their positive health transformations and successes,” states Carole. MediCare pays for a variety of health care needs but is limited to the amount of home care people receive. This can be an issue for many. “We visit the home to offer help and solutions. We charge nothing. It’s a free service”, Doug added. Former resident, CeCe Wind said, “It was a wonderful experience when I stayed at Western Slope, and the care and compassion continues now that I am at home. I love that Doug checks on me.” Marshall Hospital has partnered with Western Slope to ensure Quality Health Care. “We ensure when patients are released from Marshall to Western Slope that we continue to follow the Plans of Care put into place and continue those plans when they return home,” Carole Mann continues, “Being able to wonderfully enrich and serve our community is what it’s all about.”

editor’s note

Shortly after graduating college, I lived and worked abroad in Sydney, Australia. I had been told time and time again that before settling into a career and serious relationship I should “see the world.” So trot around the globe I did—with three years’ worth of waitressing tips and two small suitcases, I set sail— first with friends to Europe and Asia then solo to the land down under. It was a time of uncertainty and many l o n e ly m o m e n t s — I literally didn’t know a soul my first day there—but also a period where I leapt unhesitatingly into so many firsts and new experiences. For those nine months abroad, I wasn’t afraid of the “what ifs” or caught up in making excuses of why I couldn’t “do this” or “do that.” And the result? Not only did I meet lifelong friends from cultures so vastly different than my own, (attempt to) learn how to surf, and take a stab at salsa dancing, but I became comfortable with being uncomfortable. With 2017 upon us, I can’t think of a better time to jump out of your comfort zone. It doesn’t need to be as audacious as traveling halfway around the world—all we ask is it’s something that scares, excites or intrigues you. Need some ideas? In this month’s feature, “Your 2017 To-Do List” Sharon Penny scoured the region and found over 30 local activities that’ll force you to shake up your routine— things that run the gamut from food challenges and cooking classes, to karaoke and indoor skydiving. Here at Style, we decided the new year would also be a perfect time to bring a new look to the magazine; think —Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. fresh fonts, bolder colors, different layouts and a department dedicated to all-things food and beverage, aptly titled Eat & Drink. We hope you dig it…and that it makes you want to dig into some of the dishes! Let me know what you think by emailing megan@ stylemg.com. Whatever hand you were dealt in 2016, remember that 2017 is a new beginning—an opportunity to wipe the slate clean—so fill it with love, laughter and perhaps a new hobby… and make it your Best. Year. Yet. — Megan

“

A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.”

Look your best for the New Year!

What is Asclera and how is it administered? Asclera is a chemical that’s used to treat small spider veins and larger ret icular veins under three millimeters in size. It is injected directly into the vein, which causes a small scar to form within the vessel and then total resolution of the treated vein. Sometimes there are immediate results; other times it takes a few weeks of healing to have final results. Taking a walk immediately after the injection treatment and wearing good compression garments for two to three days following the treatment is recommended. Why is fluoride important and how can I make sure my child gets enough?

Call for Your Free Consultation

The f luoride ion incorporates into the existing tooth structure and, in essence, makes the tooth stronger toward the effects of ac id, wh ich st ud ies show leads to decreased dental cav it ies. Dental fluorosis (discoloration or mottling of enamel) can occur if the amount of ingested fluoride exceeds recom mended va lues. E n a m e l f o r m at i o n o f permanent teeth occurs from about the time of birth until approximately five years of age. After tooth enamel is completely formed, dental f luorosis can not develop — even if excessive f luor ide is ingested. Since Folsom lacks fluoride in its water supply, pediatricians and pediatric dentists routinely prescribe fluoride supplementation in proper dosage according to age. If you choose not to supplement, a pea-sized fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash is recommended if your child is able to spit. El Dorado Hills resident Sophia Barden started twirling a baton when she was just four years old. For her mother, a onetime twirler herself, the sport gave her “wild child” an outlet.“She’s really spirited,” Cynthia Barden attests. “Twirling gave her focus.” Sophia, 15, is now a sophomore at Oak Ridge High School and was recently selected as one of only three people in the nation to compete in the World Baton Twirling Championships in Sweden. Last summer, she finished in ninth place at the event, and she is determined to do even better next time around. “It was inspiring

to see all the other women there, and what I could accomplish if I put myself to it,” she shares. Her parents have no idea where Sophia—who plays soccer, gets straight As, and keeps herself to a grueling training regimen, often practicing upwards of four hours a day after school, and even more on weekends—gets her drive. “I get physically tired, but I’ll never get tired of doing what I love,” she explains. Her secret to success is that she also makes time to be a normal teenager—watching movies on Netflix, reading and daydreaming about one day

Yet even if she does pursue a career in the military, she won’t forget the lessons from her twirling days. “Twirling teaches me how to win and how to lose, how to be a leader and how to be a follower. FOLSOM ZOO SPOTLIGHT Meet the Turkey Vultures

You may see turkey vultures—a bird that’s been protected in the U.S. since 1918—catching updraft winds as they “hunt from above” in the Folsom area. Also called buzzards, these remarkable animals can float on six-foot wings searching for prey below and have good vision and an excellent sense of smell. These feathered fowl are partners for life, taking care of up to three chicks for about 40 days; one parent stays with the little ones while the other hunts and brings home carrion (dead animals). Swing by the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary to say hello to these unique creatures.

Holiday Tree Recycling And Chipping

— Roberta Ratcliff

This free, CSD/Waste Connections-sponsored event takes place at the Community Park. Cash donations will be accepted and benefit the Community Supporting Youth Fund. To prepare your tree, remove everything from it including all ornaments, lights, ornament holders, nails and the stand. Trees that are “flocked” aren’t eligible for chipping. Discarded wreaths, garlands and greenery with metal, plastic, wire, lights or ornamentation aren’t considered green waste; place them in your trash cart.

Folsom Jazz Festival Folsom High School’s Music Program Director Curtis Gaesser had taken the school's musicians to perform in festivals around the state, but knew that with his group and resources he could host a local festival of equal caliber. “Folsom had the musicians and the community support, and Curtis had the ambition to get it started,” says Jon Augustine of the Folsom High School Music Boosters. The inaugural Folsom Jazz Festival in 1988 hosted eight bands; now it’s the largest school jazz festival in California—with 138 bands and choirs scheduled to perform across seven stages and two campuses on January 28. All parties involved benefit from the festival: The community gets the business of thousands of new customers staying in hotels, dining and shopping; and professional musicians have the opportunity to perform in front of huge crowds while receiving feedback from seasoned judges. As many music programs lose school funding, events like these—and the event sponsors—are crucial to their survival. “These sponsors stand out dramatically as businesses intent on keeping the arts and music alive,” Augustine says, “[which is] a crucial perception, particularly for parents who view music programs as lifelines for their kids.” —Samuel Mailey

Seth Couture

Canvases That Captivate by HEATHER L. BECKER

As long as he can remember, Seth Couture has always been able to draw. Using only pencil until adulthood, the El Dorado Hills-based artist went on to attend the San Diego Art Institute, where he was introduced to a world of new mediums, and studied color and design theory, as well as nude life drawing. Building upon his self-taught skills, he now paints stunning acrylic works with moody, atmospheric colors that focus on the beauty of the female form, as well as picturesque streetscapes of San Francisco’s rolling hills. Couture shows his work in select galleries, as well as online at vangoart.co and ugallery.com. When asked what he would’ve done differently upon looking back on his art career, he says: “I wish I wouldn't have quit so many times; [although], each time I came back, I had a new perspective...[and] I view this as growth.”

HLB: WHAT DOES YOUR FOCUS ON THE FEMALE FORM REPRESENT? S C: Because many collectors feel an emotional connection to the art on their walls, I want to avoid creating a character that can be unwelcome or even “creepy” (unless this is my intention). For these reasons, and because I paint with docile

32

emotions, a female subject often manifests in my work organically. Painting a dancer is an artist painting an artist; I like this duality. I have trouble explaining my art speaking on behalf of the female subject, because I have Asperger’s (a spectrum of autism), which is partly responsible for my repetition of these themes and the same

HLB: WHAT ELSE INSPIRES YOU? SC: I get inspired every day, arbitrarily and often unexpectedly. It only becomes artwork if I feel I can express that source of inspiration to others, which in my opinion is very limited. Why something inspires me is subconscious and unknown to me.

HLB: ANY WORDS OF WISDOM FOR ARTISTS JUST BEGINNING? SC: Art can be a simple conversation piece or it can evoke powerful emotion and attachment, trigger memories and nostalgia, or make a powerful statement. This can sometimes be a hit-or-miss process. If you want a powerful response from the viewer, your artwork must tell a story.

HLB: WILL SCULPTING BE IN YOUR FUTURE? SC: In my late thirties, I touched clay for the first time and can honestly say I was a master very quickly, with a short learning curve. I would really like to learn metalwork sculpting—focusing on abstract shapes inspired by animal bones and shells. I haven’t made much progress, because I need the funds to build the studio, but hopefully I can get started soon. sethcouture.com

Everlasting Love 5 Relationship Resolutions

Eliminate relationship-killing behavior patterns

Extramarital affairs and addictions may be among the most obvious relationship killers, but most failing marriages are slowly eroded by more subtle killers. Researcher and psychologist John Gottman identifies patterns of behavior he calls the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as predictors of early divorce. First is criticism, usually complaining about a partner’s personality or attributes; second, and most damaging, is contempt, which often comes in the form of statements from a position of

/stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemagfedh

superiority, pride and judgment; the third is chronic defensiveness, a form of self-protection in which one postures to ward off perceived attack; lastly is stonewalling, or emotionally withdrawing from interaction (ignoring your partner, or giving them the “silent treatment” is a classic form of this). Making significant changes to these behavior patterns can save failing relationships, and identifying them is the first step to change.

If your relationship has been navigating rough waters lately, don't fret. Follow the five tips below to ensure 2017 is nothing but smooth sailing.

entist ! vorite D Voted Fado Hills 8 Years ra in El Do

2

Take responsibility for yourself

3

Reach out to your partner

4

Don’t base your relationship on feelings

Set aside all the complaints you have about your spouse, and realize there’s nothing you can do to change them, for if complaining or nagging worked, they’d have changed already. Instead, focus your energy on changing yourself. Taking responsibility for your own thoughts, feelings and actions will help you grow, which in turn may positively affect the relationship by shifting negative attitudes, patterns of interaction, and guarding against resentments. Those who take responsibility only for themselves, instead of their partner, tend to have healthier relationships, regardless of their spouse.

Failing marriages are stuck in the status quo of negative interactions, failed expectations turned to resentments, and eventually withdrawing into disconnected, parallel lives. To reengage and combat marital isolation, be the first person to reach out. Do so without expectation, and your partner will respond the way you want them to. It may be difficult for them to drop their guard, trusting you won’t quickly return to old patterns, so be prepared to reach out until the trust is rebuilt.

Successful marriages aren’t based on feelings, but on hard work. The intense feelings of passion felt at the beginning of relationships tend to fade after a predictable year or two. This is normal. Healthy relationships transition to a more committed love, which isn't only hard work, but leads to a deeper, more stable partnership. Basing a romance on emotions causes instability, and confusing one’s current emotions with love, or lack thereof, prevents couples from developing the relationship skills they may otherwise acquire through difficult times together.

5

Get help

The most tragic thing I see is when couples wait too long to get help. Oftentimes one partner is so entrenched in bitterness and resentment, or has become so emotionally unavailable, that saving the marriage is extremely difficult. These couples are contrasted by the many successful ones who seek help as soon as they start to feel stuck, or want to deepen their intimacy with a “marriage tune-up.” If your marriage is beginning to struggle, get help ASAP!

Norcal Freedom for Paws Unleashing Hope for Animals

by MORGAN CÁSAREZ

In May 2016, Folsom-based realtor and animal enthusiast Susan Leu found herself deeply moved by a Facebook post about Conner, a dog at risk of being euthanized at the Stanislaus County Shelter. Without hesitation, Leu paid for two weeks of temporary boarding in the hope that it would buy the “lovely” animal enough time to be taken in by a qualified rescue organization. As a result, Conner was eventually rescued, and Susan and her husband Barry adopted another dog from the same shelter; still, she couldn’t help but wonder about all the other dogs in need. She quickly learned that rescue o rg a n i z a t i o n s a re b e t t e r a b l e to accept animals when muchneeded funds are pledged to help cover their basic needs, including spaying/neutering, vaccinations and transport from high-kill shelters to foster homes and rescue facilities. Shortly after her first successful rescue, Leu founded Norcal Freedom for Paws, an organization dedicated to raising emergency funds for shortterm boarding, transportation and medical services for animals facing euthanization. “I wish I could save them all. It breaks my heart to hear about these poor animals being dumped in these shelters to die alone,” Leu shares. “We need to get more of them out alive and reduce the number coming in. “ The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) reports that of the 7.6 million animals who enter shelters nationwide each year, nearly 3 million are Susan (human) with Abby euthanized, including 1.2 million dogs. “The biggest need I have now is for available funds. We don’t have the luxury of fund-raising once we get the shout-out for help,” Leu explains. “The dogs we deal with are literally hours from death, and if I don’t have funds available to offer to help, I don’t have the time to try to raise them. I really need money available at all times to be able to say yes when I’m asked to cover boarding, vet costs or transportation.” To date, Leu has personally funded the majority of the organization’s rescue efforts, but in order to continue serving at-risk animals, she needs greater community support in the form of

volunteers like Cindy Cope. “I’ve always been a dog lover, but you can only have so many,” Cope shares. “This organization has allowed me to help many [of them].” Barry, who assists Leu in the transport of rescued animals, adds: “I am very proud of my wife for starting this. She does this mostly on her own and could really use some help [and] volunteers...Donations are always needed. We also need fosters, because without committed fosters, we can’t save them. It’s really important to my wife, and I see and admire her passion about it.” norcalfreedomforpaws.com

Extreme Office Makeover Deep-Blue Dwelling

by KERRIE L. KELLY, ASID

TO ACCOMPLISH A SPACE LIKE THIS:

1

Fo c u s o n c o l o rcentric details like color blocking or accenting pieces with a b o l d n av y h u e . The attention to subtle detail will set your look apart from everyone else’s take on traditional navy.

During this Folsom home’s revamp, Kerrie Kelly Design Lab (KKDL) created a masculine study reflective of the professional couple living in the space .

Before and after photos courtesy of Brian Kellogg. Kerrie Kelly photo by Dante Fontana.

Mixing rustic textures with classic details, this deep-blue dwelling offers a sanctuary to someone who works from home or simply wants to hide away and read a good book. With a focus on personalized details like X-back shelving and rope-framed wall mirrors, the space is the epitome of casual elegance. DIY wainscoting provides an elegant touch and pairs well with understated accents like a clean color palette and simple accessories. With a tucked-away design, KKDL designed a home office full of sophisticated storage and plush seating. For the older professional, this master suite’s study offers a relaxing retreat full of books, artwork and gentlemanly accessories—a place where a professional can study, work or relax without ever stepping out of their home.

2

Set a masculine tone with a moody color palette and dark metallic features. A collection of vintage accessories and emphasis on wooden and organic elements can take a navy room from “gentle” to “gentleman” in no time.

3

Add dimension with furnishings and accent pieces of varied sizes and scale. Opting for a small grouping of side tables, as opposed to one large coffee table, is a great way to make a statement.

4

Add texture when possible. The juxtaposition of smooth surfaces and plush seating is perfect for a home office.

This beautiful study is reflective of the people in the home— complete with their favorite trinkets and accessories, hand-hewn materials and deep, saturated coloration throughout—and will be a haven for them as they navigate their careers, extracurricular activities, social events and family time.

Kerrie L. Kelly is an interior designer who has created several model homes in Northern California. See her latest set at Veranda at Empire Ranch by Elliott Homes in Folsom or online at kerriekelly.com.

Actually, I don’t wear glasses. I don't even wear contacts. It surprises some that I am an eye doctor yet have no eye problems. But I like to help people and from an early age, I always found ways to help and care for others. As a child, I would nurse my favorite stuffed Teddy back to good health, or I would heal my doll’s “broken leg”. Today, my focus is eyes. I love to help my patients see clearly so they can fully engage in their lives, the people that they care about and the things they love to do. What this looks like every day varies; some days, it means my patient gets his first pair of glasses and no longer struggles to see in the classroom. On occasion, it means monitoring the cataract that has started to cause vision loss in my patient. Some days, it means evaluating the health of my diabetic patient’s eyes to ensure they wont lose vision. I enjoy connecting with my patients, building relationships and meeting their individualized vision needs. I want my patients to look good and see better.

Shogun Hibachi Grill and Sushi

Japanese Food at its Finest by LORN RANDALL // photos by DANTE FONTANA

Merriam-Webster defines shogun as “one of a line of military governors ruling Japan until the revolution of 1867–68,” but contrary to the imagery provided by its classical definition, Shogun Hibachi Grill and Sushi is a very modern teppanyaki restaurant. From the colored LED lighting under the bar to the bubbling water feature, decorative tile flooring and architectural ceiling, diners are shielded from the sensat ion that they’re in a suburban Folsom strip mall. Featur ing three U-shaped hibachi presentation tables, fans of teppanyakistyle dining can get up close and personal as a personal chef deftly chops, slices, flips and flies your dinner over and above the grill and ultimately, onto your plate. I recommend calling ahead for reservations, as the website doesn’t provide information regarding show times. After being seated and ordering a cup of hot green tea, I was given an option of soups. True to its name, Clear Soup looks like a bowl of consommé with a few shaved mushrooms and sliced scallions. Though simple in visual composition, the rich, almost smoky flavor was unforgettably perfect umami. Fishology Poke Bar // Serving one of the latest cuisine crazes, poke (pronounced po-kay)—essentially a rice bowl topped with bite-sized

pieces of fresh, marinated raw fish and add-ons of your choice—Fishology Poke Bar is a fast, healthy way to crush your sushi cravings. Think of it as Chipotle, in the sense that you watch your creation come to life and dictate exactly what you want in your meal, but without the post-gluttony guilt. On my last visit to the airy, light-filled, stylish space, I ordered a regular-sized bowl with half brown rice and half spring salad as the base (wonton chips and sushi rice are also available); salmon, ahi tuna and tofu for my proteins; and, to top it off, crab salad, mango, green onions, edamame, jalapeños, cucumbers and seaweed salad, with a saucy combo of spicy mayo, sesame shoyu and garlic ponzu. After a bit of mixing and mashing, it was time to dive into the colorful concoction. The balance of textures, temperatures (warm rice, cool fish) and spicy-sweet-salty goodness had my taste buds swimming in delight. Fishology also serves cold-pressed juices from local favorite Liquidology and giant macaron ice cream sandwiches in a rainbow of flavors…in case you needed two more reasons to poke your head in. CURRIED FALAFEL WITH KALE SALAD Falafel are wonderful, deep-fried delights that I could pop like candy. However, I don’t own a deep fryer—but I do have an oven! These baked sensations—which acquired the moniker goldenballs during development—are a hit, with rich curry adding spiciness and a faux deep-fried hue. Tahini dressing, a falafel requisite, is imbued with the same sunshiny curry powder, as well as maple syrup, lending a caramel-like sweetness that melds beautifully with a simple salad of kale, carrots and cucumbers. Q&A WITH LOCAL COMPANIES

Describe your business.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

NorCal Cryotherapy offers advanced ice therapy for people looking to speed recovery, revitalize sore muscles, lose weight, rejuvenate beauty routines and revolutionize their lives.

I stumbled upon the events field in 2000 when I started organizing trade shows, conferences and corporate events, and very quickly grew to love it. I recently followed my dream and launched Blue Plaza Events, which provides event planning and management services.

Why is your staff the best in the business? Our staff is highly trained in their field; all have a fitness industry background—which enhances their knowledge of human anatomy— and all are driven to deliver the best customer service experience… each and every shift!

What life accomplishments are you most proud of? My family, which extends to my staff as well. This is truly a familybuilt and family-run business.

Where do you go when the going gets tough? I’m also the proud owner of fitRIDE Indoor Cycling Studio in El Dorado Hills, so when the going gets tough, I love to take a class, lose myself in the loud music, sweat and leave all my stress on the bike.

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience? My first real job was at a Hallmark store when I was 16. It was a small family-owned business, and I was able to gain tremendous insight into how a small business runs and how to be customer-service driven. I also learned that when people are counting on you, you need to get out of bed to work—even if you don’t feel like it!

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

Flexibility. Remaining active in my children's schools and sports is critical for all of us. We are all constantly working together and supporting one another, so we never miss the truly important stuff.

One of the reasons I started my business is so I can do more events in this community. I previously worked on a lot of high-tech events that took me to other cities, many of them out of state. I recently joined the Folsom Chamber of Commerce, as well as a few other local organizations, and I’m blown away by the deep sense of community here. I’ve always been passionate about community and volunteering; since my oldest daughter was born, my focus has been on advocating for children with disabilities.

Where do you and your family go locally to have fun?

What’s your biggest job perk?

Our family oasis is the pool at Serrano Country Club. We enjoy going there to relax, play with the kids and mingle with friends.

Having my own business has allowed me a lot of freedom to be able to juggle all of my passions—my business, the work I do in the community, and my family. It’s also allowed me to have more flexibility in choosing the events I manage, because it’s important to me that I’m passionate about the events I work on, and that I maintain high levels of customer service.

What’s your biggest job perk?

What’s your opinion of Style Magazine? I’m a huge fan of Style and devour it cover to cover each month.

And finally, customer service is…? Everything. Exceeding someone's expectations is goal number one.

Where do you and your family go locally to have fun?
We enjoy eating out (my girls love to eat!) and hiking the local trails, and we visit Sutter Street a lot. Anything with friends!

DO YOU KNOW THAT OUR EDITORIAL IS NOT PAID FOR, NOR CAN IT BE PURCHASED?

In fact, our Introducing and Eat & Drink section reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

Strike a Pose

Local Lumberjack Brings Sexy Back forearms are the size of salmon. He’s a bail bondsman! Yep, Josh could be a very intimidating dude…as long as he's not dressed up like a mermaid or lying across the hood of a vintage pickup in a pair of red polka dot boxer shorts. The burly former Oak Ridge High School student has become perhaps t h e u n l i ke l i e s t g l o b a l heartthrob ever, via a series Josh and his son Tyler of what are called “dudeoir” photos. You’ve probably seen them. If you haven’t, you must not be online. Photographer Tami Bears of Artistic Photography by Tami had the initial idea. She’d seen a photo shoot with a man that was a send-up of sexy “boudoir” images, and they made her laugh. “But I immediately thought I could put an extra comical spin on it by making it a redneck version, with a logger-type ‘manly man.’” Tami considered several guys, but none clicked. “I had almost given up when out of the blue Josh posted a selfie on Facebook, and the lightbulb lit up!” She and Josh were already friends. She kicked herself for not thinking of him sooner. As it turned out, it was a serendipitous moment, because unbeknownst to Tami, Josh—whose personality is as outsized as his physique—had been “wanting to do something goofy for a while.” Goofy like this? Um, actually, yeah. “I wanted to do something half-naked!” he laughs. Which explains the selfie Tami saw on Facebook: Josh in a pair of boxer shorts. Tami shared her idea. He loved it. “...the overalls, the ‘country bumpkin’ theme...I thought it was fun.” Neither she nor Josh had any plans for the photos, other than to share them with friends on Catch Tom on the Pat and Tom Morning Facebook “for a few laughs.” Show on New But what happened next is the stuff Country 105.1, email him at tnvmailey@ of social media legend. Within days, the gmail.com, or follow him on Twitter images had been shared over 50,000 @kncitom. times. Tami got a call from Cosmopolitan, which, along with other media like Good WHAT’S COMING NEXT MONTH? Morning America, had shared the pictures Don’t miss Style’s “Iconic Architecture: online. Soon, they were hearing from 8 Great Local people in France, Germany, Sweden and Homes.” Australia. “We were both shocked and completely in uncharted water.” A full-

time wedding photographer, Tami says, “I was using my breaks to try and talk to foreign media from bathroom stalls!” adding that it has been “both chaotic and fun—all rolled into one.” They’ve been hearing from regular people, too. Thousands of them. “We got so many messages saying how we made them feel better in their own skin, and they loved what we were doing,” Tami says. But there has been some negativity, too; in the first shoot, Tami included an American flag (“because Flag Day was coming up, and I'm a patriotic girl”), but its use offended some, which she says “broke my heart.” However, most feedback has been “overwhelmingly positive.” Since that initial shoot on Josh’s parents’ Shingle Springs property, there have been several more, including one at the ocean that was more or less a crazed mash-up of Baywatch and The Little Mermaid. Along the way, they’ve teamed up in real life, too. They’ve started dating. How many more can they do? Josh acknowledges the joke is probably close to running its course but says, “I don’t know; as long as people are laughing and asking to see more, we’ll keep doin’ ‘em.” And that seems to be their real motivation, especially Josh’s. Despite his lumberjack-on-a-Harley look, he has a gentle voice, a quick laugh and kind eyes. “We’re in some tough times,” he says. “People need to laugh. And if they can forget about their problems for a minute and have a laugh at my expense…? I’m all in.” Even if all he’s in are a pair of red polka dot boxer shorts.
