Whether it’s taking the time to listen to how you take your tea, the soothing feeling of being able to take a bath with the help of the nurses on the ward, or the calm explanation of your medication from the doctor – at St Wilfrid’s Hospice, we deliver expert care and compassion for people in the last phase of their lives. Thanks to our supporters, we have helped those with life limiting and terminal illnesses to make the most of every day for over 35 years. Every year since we first opened our doors, the need for our care has increased and, today, we meet over 900 patients each year. It is only thanks to the generosity of people like you that any of this is possible. Thank you for considering leaving a legacy of compassion.

What a gift in your Will can do To make a difference to local lives, we need your help. As an independent local charity, we receive a small grant from the NHS to pay for some of our care costs, but the majority of the cost of running the Hospice is covered by the generosity of our supporters, shoppers and donors. Gifts left in Wills pay for 1 in 4 patients’ care. Whether big or small, these vital gifts mean we can provide expert care for people living with life limiting and terminal illnesses, while also offering guidance and support to their loved ones – now, and in the future.

The difference your gift could make to local lives Colin’s Story… “When my Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he was living abroad in Turkey. Receiving treatment there was very difficult; he would have to travel for hours, in pain, to get to the hospital. So, he decided to come home and St Wilfrid’s Hospice became involved in his care shortly after his return. Dad spent six weeks on the Hospice Ward. He felt safe there and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier. He also adored the garden, watching the birds and squirrels and spent every possible moment in the fresh air. The doctors would even come outside to see him rather than in his room!
All of the family were welcome, including my son, 6 year old Nizar and my nephew, 5 year old Patrick. Nothing was any trouble, we were even able to stay overnight and have our meals with Dad. For the family, it meant we could concentrate on spending precious time with him. My dear Dad died peacefully after being unconscious for three days surrounded by people that loved him. It was a horrible time but I dread to think what it would have been like without St Wilfrid’s care and we are all so grateful for their kindness and support.”

Why making a Will is so important Making a Will can help protect the people and causes you care most about, while ensuring everything you own (your estate) is dealt with in the way you choose.
Top reasons for making a Will include: Ensure dependent children and stepchildren are cared for Protect your partner if you’re unmarried Name someone to look after your pet Decide who will settle your affairs Record any wishes for your funeral plans Choose to support a charity in your Will Your Will is one of the most important legal documents you can make. If you die without making a Will, you have died ‘intestate’ and the law decides who inherits your estate.

Types of Gift A share of your estate (residuary gift) This is when you leave a percentage of your estate, after deducting any debts and costs. A cash sum (pecuniary gift) This is when you leave a set amount of money. A specific gift This is when you leave a particular item of value rather than money – for example, a house, painting, or item of jewellery. We recommend you speak with a solicitor or legal professional to make or amend your Will. 10

for your Will
Remembering St Wilfrid’s Hospice in your Will is easy to do. To make things simple, we have included some suggested wording below for two types of gifts. Residuary gift (a percentage of your estate) “I leave x percent of the residue of my real and personal estate to St Wilfrid’s Hospice, a charity registered in England and Wales (RN 281963) of Walton Lane, Chichester PO18 8QB for the general purposes of St Wilfrid’s Hospice and I declare that the receipt of its Treasurer or other proper officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge.” Pecuniary gift (a set amount) “I leave the sum of [in words] x pounds £x [in figures] to St Wilfrid’s Hospice, a charity registered in England and Wales (RN 281963) of Walton Lane, Chichester PO18 8QB for the general purposes of St Wilfrid’s Hospice and I declare that the receipt of its Treasurer or other proper officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge.” If you want to let us know you’ve left a gift to us, we’d love to hear from you. It helps us plan for the future and means we can thank you for your support. However, there is no need to tell us if you’d prefer not to.
