Welcome 3
Welcome Welcome to the 2026 autumn edition of St Wilfrid’s News. I’d like to begin by thanking you for your unwavering generosity and support during what remains a challenging time for the hospice sector. Every donation, every hour volunteered and every act of kindness helps us provide compassionate care for local people and their families when they need it most. You may have seen in the media that hospices across the UK, including ourselves, have been calling on the government to provide sustainable funding to ensure hospice care can continue to meet growing demand. At St Wilfrid’s, our running costs are over £10.5 million, and our grant from the government only covers around 16% of this. As a result, we are currently working with a deficit budget and rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community. In this edition, you can read more about the challenges facing hospices, as well as the incredible difference your support makes at St Wilfrid’s, enabling us to provide compassionate end-of-life care for local people. On a brighter note, it’s been another busy and inspiring spring and summer. Our annual Moonlight Walk saw more than 800 people come together in support of St Wilfrid’s, making it a truly memorable evening. My sincere thanks go to everyone who took part, volunteered or raised sponsorship. Inside, you’ll discover stories from across the Hospice and your community, celebrating the dedication of our volunteers, fundraisers and donors. You’ll also meet some members of our exceptional clinical team, whose compassion, expertise and commitment are at the heart of everything we do. Looking ahead, we have an exciting programme of events planned for the autumn and winter, and there are plenty of other ways you can support St Wilfrid’s. In the newsletter you’ll find information about Gifts in Wills, Regular Giving, our beautiful Memory Leaves and our charity shops. I hope you enjoy this edition.

Our care in action
Our care in action At St Wilfrid’s, our care begins by asking: “What do we need to know about you as a person to give you the best care possible?” This question ensures our support remains personal, whether we are managing complex symptoms on our Ward or providing specialist support to allow someone to remain at home. Inpatient Support: To meet growing demand, we redesigned our community services this year by launching a Rapid Response Team. The team delivers urgent assessments at home to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions. Over its first six months, the team received 156 referrals, who all avoided hospital admission this year. We also expanded our non-medical prescribers to support our patients with seven-day access to medication. When care at home is no longer possible, our 14-bed Ward provides specialist care. Ward admissions rose to 288 this year —including a 26% increase in admissions directly from hospitals. Our team responds quickly to this increase in demand, admitting 68% of patients within 48 hours of referral, with an average stay of eight days. Whether managing pain or helping a patient and his wife arrange their wedding on the Ward with local registrars, our focus remains on individualised care and dignity.
And our care extends beyond the bedside, with our Family Services Team helping a large number of families through emotional, psychological, social and spiritual support. Collaboration and Rehabilitation: Our Rehabilitation Team managed an average of 40 new referrals each month both in the Ward and out in the community. By strengthening links with local hospitals, they ensure smooth transitions for patients on discharge. The team also supports our new Rapid Response Team, completing the majority of equipment and manual handling reviews within 24 hours. Alongside weekly seated exercise and creative art rehab groups—the latter supported by the Chichester Art Society—we now host a bi-monthly Motor Neurone Disease (MND) drop-in event and a monthly multidisciplinary MND clinic. These services are enhanced by our complementary therapy volunteers and three new specialist seating chairs secured through donations.
Sustainability, Education, and Research: To ensure long-term stability, our medical team now collaborates with two other local hospices to provide shared consultant on-call cover across three inpatient sites. We also expanded our patient safety and quality team and have undertaken a project to update our patient record system. Education remains central to our mission. We provided placements for medical, nursing, paramedic, therapy, and social work students, alongside a training partnership with local paramedic services. In addition to our Advanced Communication Skills course, we launched new training focused on the needs of the LGBTQ+ community and on intimacy at the end of life.
None of the above would be possible without our supporters, whose generosity ensures we are able to provide the best care possible for local people at end of life. Every process improvement made, every new piece of invaluable equipment purchased, every time we’re able to prescribe medication to someone in pain, every small moment that matters – this is all because of you. 88 St Wilfrid s Hospice | Meet our team
Meet India, Lead Counsellor in the Hospice’s Family Services Team Can you tell me about you and your background – and how you came to be at St Wilfrid’s? I started training as a counsellor in 2017. I initially trained in Humanistic Counselling locally in Chichester, before I went to London to do additional training to work with children, families and couples. I used to work on local radio and fell in love with the charity during this time and fundraised by doing the Moonlight Walk and a sky dive. In 2020, while I was a student counsellor, I chose to do my voluntary placement at the Hospice due to my existing connection with St Wilfrid’s. Shortly after this, I was offered a permanent role as a counsellor a couple of days a week. I moved into the Lead Counsellor role two years ago. Can you give me an idea of a typical day/week as Lead Counsellor? I work part time and am predominantly based at the Hospice, on the Ward and in the Living Well Centre – but I go to people’s homes

in the community as well. The Family Services Team is quite small. There’s me and Kate who are employed counsellors; we have a full-time social worker and a part-time chaplain. We also have the support of wonderful volunteers including qualified counsellors, students and other experienced professionals who make up our team. When I am at the Hospice, I attend team meetings, working closely with our management, clinical experts and other agencies. I supervise the team and triage/ assess the referrals we get, but my primary focus is meeting with patients, their families, friends and carers, both pre- and post-bereavement. This is what I love. I enjoy being with people. It’s all about relationships and the connection. When you meet someone and connect with them, and see that they feel known, heard and understood and that they can trust you – that’s what I get the most from my role. What are the types of things that you help people with? Generally, people don’t tend to talk about death, and this can lead to insecurities, uncertainty and anxiety, which are some of the common emotions that we help with. People can feel frightened, they’re often grieving and can feel like they’ve lost their sense of purpose, their self-

worth. Someone facing end of life or loss can also have relationship struggles – and we’ll meet with them on a 1:1 basis or sometimes as a couple. Some may feel anger and frustration about what’s happening to them, which is very normal. We are there to listen and understand, to meet them as an individual – and share supporting guidance if they want us to. How do you cope with the emotion involved in such a role? Part of the way I cope is by acknowledging that it’s ok to feel emotional when someone dies or when someone shares their suffering with me. It’s sad because people and their lives matter to me, but it’s beautiful to connect with and support patients and their loved ones. The other way I cope is by making sure I have time when I’m not a counsellor – watching TV, travelling with my partner, being with my cats and family, listening to music, sea swimming with friends and horse riding. We also have great supervision and a supportive team here that understands this is part of the work we do. We share how we feel and support each other through our individual cases. Having this time together is fundamentally important for all of us. And even after an emotionally heavy day, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

10 St Wilfrid s Hospice | Hospice UK campaign
Hospice care for all, for now, forever Hospice UK is the national champion for hospices and represents a community of more than 200 hospices across the UK. Their mission is to ensure hospice care is there for all who need it, both today and in the future. Across the country, hospices care for about 310,000 people* living with life-limiting conditions or facing the end of life each year, and that number is expected to grow. Unfortunately, hospices are underfunded, undervalued and under more pressure than ever.
As part of Hospice UK’s ‘Dear Prime Minister’ campaign, and with pressures reaching breaking point, nurses and hospice leaders from across England gathered outside Parliament in April to call for urgent action on funding.
This national picture is reflected close to home. After several years of high Hospices, including St Wilfrid’s, provide inflation and rising costs, we have free-of-charge care, but unlike the started dipping into our savings, which NHS, the care provided is not fully will not be sustainable in the long state funded. More from our Community Supporters On the 12th May, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of our supporters to Croucher’s Potager Restaurant for a special update on our Hospice services. Guests heard from our Chief Executive, Lois, Dr Clarissa, and John, one of our dedicated Ward volunteers, each sharing insight into the care we provide and the difference it makes to patients and families every day. Along with some delicious canapés, the event allowed us to recognise the vital role our community plays in everything we do. Without all our incredible supporters, we simply wouldn’t be able to provide the specialist care our patients need. If you’d like information on how to get involved with future events like this, please contact Bryan, Christine or Bronte in our Fundraising Team on 01243 755184. We’d love to have you join us!
Further thanks
We would like to thank Croucher’s, Toddington Nurseries, and Ashes to Blooms for their generous support with this event.
A massive thank you to the very generous Rene and Ghislaine of Paris Healing Foundation for their continued support of our Complimentary Therapy Service. In April, the Foundation donated £20,000 towards patients and their loved ones continuing to have access to these calming therapy sessions. An amazing donation. Thank you very much!

The heritage of our Arundel Boutique Not only is our new boutique marking a different style of charity shop for St Wilfrid’s, the building itself is also rather special. No. 53 High Street is a Grade II listed building renowned as the original home of the West Sussex Gazette. The newspaper first launched on 1st June 1853, and was printed onsite. Following a devastating fire in March 1889 that damaged the printing machinery, the front office was rebuilt around 1899 in a nationally recognised Jacobean style. The West Sussex Gazette expanded and eventually moved its operations to Chichester in 1996. The old print rooms were initially converted into flats and a shopping arcade featuring entrances on both the High Street and Tarrant Street. In more recent times, 53 High Street has sat in the heart of Arundel’s famous antiques district – and today, it is the home of our new boutique shopping experience. We all feel immensely privileged to be in such a special building and look forward to welcoming you inside.

We can receive an extra 25% through Gift Aid Gift Aid is one of the simplest and easiest ways of giving to a charity. It is a scheme approved by HMRC, which allows us to claim an extra 25p for every £1 that we collect from the sale of goods you donate to our shops. For example: If you donate goods at one of our shops and they are sold for £20, these would actually be worth £25 to us if you sign up to Gift Aid – at no extra cost to you! To be eligible for Gift Aid you are required to be a UK taxpayer and must have paid enough tax to cover any Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in each tax year. So when you take your donations into one of our shops, ask to sign up to Gift Aid and help us make a difference to local people.

If you’d like a beautiful reminder of a loved-one, which you can visit anytime in St Wilfrid’s reception lounge, then why not consider a Memory Leaf? By dedicating a leaf with a personal message, you’ll also be helping other families receive hospice care in the future. Nature-inspired, we have three beautiful leaves to choose from:
Bronze Leaf £120 (or £10 per month) Silver Leaf £210 (or £17.50 per month) Gold Leaf £300 (or £25.00 per month) Each leaf remains on the tree for the first 13 months, after which you can choose to renew your dedication for a further 12 months. Could you leave a gift of 1% in your Will? Leaving a gift in your Will to St Wilfrid’s Hospice is one of the most powerful ways you can make a big difference to local people in need. In fact, 1 in 4 of our patients is cared for thanks to gifts left in Wills by kind people like you. A gift of 1% of your estate ensures your family and loved ones are fully provided for while enabling your local Hospice to fund vital end-of-life care for generations to come. Leaving a gift in your Will could also reduce your Inheritance Tax liability, meaning more of your money goes exactly where you want it to.* To find out more and to download your free Gifts in Wills Guide, please visit: stwh.co.uk/gifts-in-wills
