STATEMENT OF INTEREST

My interest has always been in relation tothe person and theirenvironment orsurroundings; what they handle and touch on a daily basis, and howthat environment is part ofwhothey are. In high school, I tookfouryearsof art and design classes, aswell asworked with potterytodevelop myskillswith my hands. Using my hands hasshown me howform can be madethrough different media. In addition tocreating pottery, I have learned that the appeal of an item isn't just about how it looksor appears, but rather how it functions, isergonomicallydesigned forthe user, and isthe right sizefor its intended purpose. In addition, I havechanged theway I think about designing through the understanding of how a concept evolvesfrom being a simpledrawing orsketch, into a finished tangible product. Instead of looking at design as an end goal, I nowthinkofdesign as an ongoing relationship between thedesigner and thecreated item from both the standpoint ofcreativity and practical use. I am still working this process into mydesignsthrough hand-built modelsofseat support togain insight into how I perceive mydesign for interiors.I am drawn tothefield of Interior Architecture as I believethat it is an area that fusestwospheresof influencetogether—imagination and creativity along with structural integrity/emotional response and the need forfunction within a space. My passion lies in exploring howvarioustypesof materials, different typesof lighting sources and howspace isorganized createexperiencesfor ourselvesthroughout thecourseofourdays. Myworkdemonstrates a melding oforganicform and architectural symmetry, often originating from an initial hand sketch todeveloping a three-dimensional model, which then turns intofurtherdigital exploration.I am eagerto improve mytechnical knowledge, particularly in the area ofdigital modelling and spatial development through the physical creation of models. I am confident that the InteriorArchitecture program atThe Universityof Houston will allow me to hone mydesign thinking aswell as mytechnical skillswhilecontinuing to utilise my handstocreate.
