Melia’s journey to Scandinavia
Melia had always wanted to study abroad, but with her rigorous schedule on the Smith College soccer team, she wasn’t sure if she could. After getting a concussion, she decided to use her junior year as a break from athletics—and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pursue her academic interests.
A full year with DIS Melia spent one whole year abroad: one semester at DIS Stockholm and one semester at DIS Copenhagen.
In Stockholm, Melia took courses like European Security Dilemmas, Swedish Politics and Society, Economics and Monetary Policy, and even Swedish Language and Culture. In Copenhagen, she enrolled in Counter-Terrorism and Intelligence, Health Economics, Danish Language and Culture, and more.

“ Coming from a small town in California, Stockholm is so different than anywhere I’ve ever lived. It has so many things you wouldn’t normally find in a city. That’s what’s really cool about it: you get a city vibe, but also nature is so accessible. Having the opportunity to explore the islands and the nature preserves is pretty amazing.”

Study Tours
Led by your faculty, Study Tours allow you to take your learning on the road—a signature part of the DIS experience included in your tuition. Study Tours take you into real-world settings where you apply what you learn outside the classroom.
You will travel with your classmates twice throughout the semester: one three-day Short Study Tour to a nearby destination and one week-long Long Study Tour to another European country.

In Danish, the word hygge means a feeling of coziness or comfort, and in Copenhagen, you can find a little bit of hygge everywhere. Hygge can be laying under the summer sun in a park, swimming in the canals, enjoying dinner with friends, or spending time with your housemates after a long day. Copenhageners make use of the many cozy spaces around the city—and so can you.

“Making friends here has been such a fun mix of intentional effort and happy accidents. I’ve definitely met people I want to stay in touch with—we already have summer plans! It’s been a while since I’ve had to make so many new connections in such a short time, but it’s been so refreshing to push myself a bit, step outside of what’s familiar, and open up to whoever crosses my path.”

Moving through the city
“What really gets me is how livable the city is. Public transport is super efficient, and because the city is relatively small, biking everywhere feels natural and freeing.
One of my favorite things is the relationship between the water and the land. You can feel Copenhagen’s deep history with fishing, sailing, and trade in the way the city is laid out. I live in Christianshavn, and I’m always by the water. My daily commute is actually one of the highlights of my day: going from the city, crossing a bridge, riding through a park, and then passing by another lake or canal—it never gets old.”

Europe as your classroom
Travel with your classmates and see your academics from a new perspective. Led by your Core Course faculty, Study Tours take you outside the classroom and across Europe—and there, you apply what you’ve learned in realworld settings. With academic and cultural activities, Study Tours enrich your understanding of the place around you. Together, you’ll travel on two Study Tours:
Short Study Tour
Early in your semester, you will spend five days entirely with your Core Course: two days in your host city (Copenhagen or Stockholm) and three days traveling to a nearby destination.
Long Study Tour
Later in the semester, you and your Core Course will travel for a full week to another European country, applying academic concepts in a new cultural context.

Within our Academic Programs, we offer 60+ Core Courses—a key part of the DIS experience. Your Core Course will be your primary course for the semester and will likely be between 3-6 credits.

You’ll travel on Study Tour twice with this class: one Short Study Tour to a nearby destination and one Long Study Tour to another European country.
