Si tratta dell’incipit di East Coker, il secondo dei Quattro Quartetti di T.S. Eliot. La frase riprende il motto presente sullo stendardo di Maria Stuarda — En ma fin est mon commencement — traducendolo e invertendolo: In my beginning is my end. Eliot colloca questa espressione all’inizio di East Coker, intrecciandola con un celebre frammento di Eraclito, il frammento LXX: L’inizio e la fine sono uno. Sull’altalena, la frase è incisa in due parti, orientate in direzioni opposte, corrispondenti ai due sensi del suo movimento: avanti e indietro. En ma fin est mon commencement was the motto on Mary Stuart’s banner, which Eliot takes up, translates, and reverses (In my beginning is my end) at the start of this Second Quartet, connecting it to a fragment by Heraclitus (Fragment LXX) which states: The beginning and the end are one. The phrase is engraved in two parts, facing opposite directions, corresponding to the two directions in which the swing moves: forward and backward.

Sono parole pronunciate da una celebre atleta dopo un esercizio fallito, in cui tutti si aspettavano che riuscisse. Una riflessione sul fallimento, ma anche sull’accettazione. La frase è incisa in due punti, ai due angoli della seduta, quasi a segnare una soglia simbolica, un confine da attraversare. Engraved on the bronze seat of a swing are the words Solitude / Multitude that are engraved in opposite directions, echoing the back-and-forth motion of the swing.
