MIEKE VAN DEN HOOGEN HUIJGEN ART CAPITAL 2018
Her studies focused on the design of ceramics from 1987 to 1991 at the University of Maastricht. From February 1992 he founded his own studio in Elsloo and later moved to Nijmegen since 1997. During his studies at the University of Maastricht his interest is particularly focused on the ceramics and the expressive possibilities of the small fragment, where under the guidance of DesirĂŠ Tonnaer (Maastricht) and Piet Hermans (Venray) has examined their potential, especially in correlation with monumental objects. In her work, the female universe assumes a predominant role. In these sculptures we can recognize the search for a balance that is eloquently expressed in the combination of naturalistic elements and the abstraction of forms and emotions.

“What I want to express in my works is the asymmetric. This is why my sculptures are made of clay and the contents are expressed in fragmentary form. The image is not an empty vase, the body is not a shell. In this fragment I create something new, letting it reveal all its delicacy and fragility “.
In the Vessel Series Mieke truly realize an Unicum: made according to ancient Indian techniques, they are sometimes painted with the help of the airbrush and sometimes made with a silkscreen decoration. These works represent all the artist’s creative freedom and joy that experimented freely for the sake of creating new forms and color gradients.
