The Kréyol Basketball Championship:

A Triumph for Caribbean Unity

In 2024, the Kréyol Basketball Championship (KBC) brought the Caribbean together in a spectacular showcase of athleticism, cultural pride, and regional collaboration. Organized by the NGO Caribbean Sport & Sustainable Development (CSSD) in partnership with Kréyol Sports International, the KBC has established itself as a premier platform for basketball in the Creole nations, celebrating the sport’s power to unite and inspire.

A Historic Finale in Dominica

The Grand Finale of the 2024 KBC took place in August at the Massacre Indoor

Facility in Dominica, and it was nothing short of a spectacle. Teams from Guadeloupe, Antigua, Saint Lucia, and Dominica battled for supremacy in a high-energy tournament that captivated fans and left a lasting impression.

Dominica’s own D-Tread Blazers made a strong showing, finishing in second place, while Antigua’s Wadadli Elite Stingerz claimed the championship title. Guadeloupe’s GGB secured third place, rounding out the podium in a competition that showcased the region’s finest basketball talent.

The games were played in front of

packed stands, with hundreds of fans cheering their teams under the vibrant backdrop of Creole music, dance, and cuisine. The tournament was more than a sporting event—it was a celebration of Caribbean culture, unity, and resilience.

Economic, Cultural, and Tourism Impact

The Grand Finale wasn’t just a celebration of basketball—it also provided valuable opportunities for Dominica. The arrival of three regional teams and their supporters brought increased activity to local businesses. Hotels and guesthouses enjoyed steady bookings, restaurants welcomed more patrons, and transportation services saw an uptick in demand.

Visitors were introduced to Dominica’s renowned Creole culture, sampling local cuisine and participating in the vibrant atmosphere surrounding the tournament. Many attendees also took the time to explore the island’s natural wonders, such as the Emerald Pool, Trafalgar Falls, and the Boiling Lake, creating lasting memories of their time in Dominica.

The fusion of sports and tourism presented a golden opportunity for Dominica to showcase its breathtaking landscapes. Adventure seekers engaged in hiking excursions, river tubing, and snorkeling in the pristine waters of Champagne Reef. These experiences positioned Dominica not only as a sports hub but also as a mustvisit destination for eco-tourism and

adventure tourism enthusiasts.

While the immediate impact was clear, the long-term benefits are equally promising. The exposure gained from hosting such a significant regional event has positioned Dominica as a welcoming destination for future international events. This blend of sports and tourism highlights the island’s ability to provide enriching experiences for visitors while fostering community pride and showcasing its unique cultural heritage.

The Road Ahead: KBC 2025

With the 2024 season a resounding success, plans for the 2025 edition of the KBC are already underway. The tournament is expanding to include 18 teams from 17 countries, divided into three regional conferences. Champions from each conference will advance to the Kréyol Basketball Kings Tournament in Le Gosier, Guadeloupe, where the “Champion of Champions” will be crowned.

This expansion is a testament to the KBC’s growing reputation as a platform for showcasing the Caribbean’s best basketball talent. It also underscores the tournament’s commitment to fostering regional collaboration and creating opportunities for athletes to shine on a global stage.

Beyond the Court: Basketball as a Catalyst for Change

The KBC’s impact extends far beyond basketball. Through initiatives like youth training camps, sustainability programs, and partnerships with local governments, the championship

aligns with the United Nations 2030 Agenda, promoting peace, education, and cultural understanding.

The KBC also emphasizes social responsibility. By integrating environmental consciousness and community engagement into its operations, the championship sets a standard for how sports can contribute to sustainable development.

A Legacy of Unity

The success of the 2024 Kréyol Basketball Championship is a reminder of what the Caribbean can achieve when united by a shared vision. As fans, players, and communities look forward to the 2025 season, the KBC continues to inspire, proving that basketball is more than a game—it’s a

movement.

Rising Star in Cricket

Journey to Inspire Young Women

Amiah Gilbert’s

Amiah Gilbert’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and an unyielding commitment to excellence in cricket. Her journey, which began in the small community of Penville, Dominica, has blossomed into a promising career that now includes her selection to the West Indies Women’s Under-19 squad for the 2025 U19 T20 World Cup in Malaysia, taking place from January 18 to February 2. The Da Next Level Sports Management and Recruiting Group, publishers of the Student Athlete Focus newsletter, extends heartfelt congratulations to Amiah and her teammates on this significant achievement and wishes them success in the upcoming World Cup.

Amiah’s love for cricket was ignited during her time at Penville Primary School. She fondly recalls how her father, who worked with the school team, encouraged her to play. With inspiration from her dad, brothers, and her late sports teacher, Tervary Sango, she quickly fell in love with the sport. By the age of nine, she had already distinguished herself as the Most Outstanding Fielder and Female Cricketer at a Kiddies Cricket Festival.

While attending Portsmouth Secondary School, Amiah faced the challenge of not having access to a female cricket

team. Nevertheless, the school stood firmly behind her, allowing her to seize opportunities at both the national and regional levels. Her determination to pursue cricket while excelling academically demonstrated her incredible resolve. The long days and late nights that followed training sessions were particularly demanding, but Amiah found ways to persevere.

Discipline and time management became crucial skills, helping her to maintain a balance between her studies and cricket. She credits her parents and teachers for their unwavering support. Her parents not only encouraged her

but also assisted her with assignments and SBAs, ensuring she never felt overwhelmed by her dual commitments. Teachers such as Emerline Anselm, Miss Bell, Ms. Victor, Ms. Wyke, and the Guidance Counselor played vital roles, offering encouragement and guidance. Additionally, the Dominica Cricket Association (DCA) became a cornerstone of her development, providing her with the resources and opportunities to thrive as an athlete.

Amiah’s cricketing career is filled with memorable milestones. Her first competitive match, playing for the Dream 11 Chaudiere Pool Diamonds,

saw her score 17 runs and take 2 wickets. This performance earned her a spot on Dominica’s national team. In 2023, at just 15 years old, she delivered a stellar performance at the Windward Islands competition in St. Lucia, securing a 5-wicket haul in one match, which led to her selection for both the senior and under-19 Windward teams. Her participation in the West Indies Cricket Camp in Antigua further honed her skills, with focused training on mental preparedness, team bonding, and technical improvements in batting and bowling.

Amiah’s achievements are not limited to the cricket field. Her academic performance is equally impressive. She excelled in her CXC exams, achieving six grade ones and four grade twos. She ranked 7th in the region in Sports and P.E., 1st in Dominica in Sports and P.O.B., and 3rd in Agriculture. Her success is a testament to the belief that with the right support system, young athletes can excel both on and off the field.

Currently enrolled at the Academix School of Learning and majoring in Business Studies, Amiah remains focused on her goals. She is preparing to represent Dominica at the Windward Islands competition this year and aims to retain her position on the Windward teams. Her journey, marked by hard work and resilience, serves as a powerful reminder to aspiring athletes to follow their dreams, no matter how challenging the path may seem.

Amiah attributes her success to the encouragement and

guidance of her parents, brothers, teachers, coaches, senior cricketers, and the DCA. Her advice to others is simple but profound: “Follow your dreams. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.” As she looks to the future, Amiah Gilbert stands as a beacon of inspiration, proving that with dedication, support, and perseverance, anything is possible.

Mervin Mingo

The Heartbeat of Dominica’s Beach Volleyball

At just nine years old, Mervin Mingo discovered his passion for volleyball, and today, he stands as one of Dominica’s shining stars in beach volleyball. From humble beginnings to earning accolades like “Best Libero” and leading his team to victory in the U21 Beach Volleyball Championship, Mingo’s journey is a testament to perseverance, determination, and unwavering focus. His story is proof that dreams are achievable, no matter where you start.

The Training Behind the Success

What does a typical training session look like for you?

Training starts with a 10-minute run, followed by stretching to prepare my body for the game. Then, we move into circuits that include squats, push-ups, weightlifting, and jumping jacks. These workouts build endurance, agility, and strength essential for beach volleyball.

What advice do you have for young players who want to train like a champion?

Start small and stay consistent. It’s about discipline and pushing yourself beyond limits. Fitness isn’t just about

the physical aspect; it’s about mental endurance, too. If you keep at it, you’ll see improvement.

Mastering the Art of Defense

You were awarded “Best Libero” in 2023. What makes a great defender?

The key to being a great defender is staying focused in the moment. You can’t dwell on past mistakes; instead, you have to channel your energy into the next play. Defense is all about anticipation, reaction time, and adaptability.

What’s your tip for aspiring liberos?

Train your mind to stay present. When the game gets tough, don’t let frustration take over. Instead, focus on the next ball and how you can improve with every play.

From Dreams to Reality

How did you overcome doubts and naysayers in your journey?

I’ve faced skepticism from people who didn’t believe I could make it in volleyball. But I never let that discourage me. When I said I wanted to represent my country, some people laughed. I used that as motivation to push myself even harder.

What’s your message to young athletes who face similar challenges?

Let doubts fuel your determination. If you truly believe in your goals, work

for them every day. Hard work and self-belief will take you further than you ever imagined.

Leadership On and Off the Court

You led your team in the U21 Beach Volleyball Championship. What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership is about inspiring and motivating others, especially in tough moments. Volleyball is a team sport, and momentum can shift quickly. When things aren’t going our way, I try to keep my teammates focused and positive.

What’s your best advice for young athletes who want to become leaders?

Lead by example. Your actions speak louder than words. Encourage your teammates, stay disciplined, and always give your best effort.

A Legacy of Support

Who has been your biggest inspiration in volleyball?

My primary school principal, Alven

Abraham, and volleyball professional Mannicka Charles. Mannicka saw my potential and encouraged me to take the sport seriously.

Why is it important to have mentors in sports?

Mentors push you to be your best. They guide you, support you, and help you navigate challenges. Surround yourself with people who believe in your dreams.

Achievements That Stand Out

What’s been your proudest moment in your career so far?

Winning the U21 Beach Volleyball Championship in St. Kitts. That victory secured our team a spot in the World Championships in Georgia in July 2025. It was an unforgettable experience.

What challenge would you give to young athletes?

Set your sights on something big. Work for it every day, and don’t be afraid to

dream beyond your limits.

The Road Ahead

What’s next for you in your volleyball career? I want to continue representing Dominica and inspire the next generation of athletes. My goal is to leave a lasting legacy and help volleyball grow in my country.

What legacy do you hope to leave?

I want young players to see that with hard work and dedication, they can achieve anything. Volleyball has given me so much, and I want to give back by helping the sport thrive in Dominica.

The Dual Challenge of Beach and Indoor Volleyball

Do you prefer beach volleyball or indoor volleyball?

I love both, but they each come with unique challenges. Beach volleyball is physically demanding with the sun, wind, and sand, while indoor volleyball requires different strategies and team dynamics.

How do you adapt to both formats? By being flexible and open to learning. The key is adjusting your technique and mindset based on the playing conditions.

Elevating Volleyball in Dominica

What can be done to help grow volleyball in Dominica?

Early team training and better preparation. When players train together consistently, they develop stronger connections, making execution during matches much smoother.

How can others contribute to growing the sport?

Whether as a player, coach, or supporter, find ways to uplift the game. Encourage young athletes, volunteer, and help create opportunities for more exposure.

Advice for Aspiring Athletes

What’s your secret to success?

Believe in yourself and have faith in God. Stay committed to your training, give it your all, and respect your

coaches—they want the best for you.

What final message do you have for young dreamers?

Trust the process, stay consistent, and never stop believing in your abilities. Hard work pays off, and dreams do come true.

Mervin Mingo continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration for volleyball in Dominica. His story proves that with resilience and dedication, anything is possible. So, what’s stopping you from chasing your dreams?

LEGACY OF

PERSEVERANCE: Celebrating the Strength of WE UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB

Since its inception in August 2017, WE United Football Club has been a beacon of hope, unity, and excellence within Dominican football. Founded by Miss Yvette Laurent, the club’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. What started as a vision to engage and uplift young footballers in Castle Bruce and surrounding areas has blossomed into a symbol of determination, community, and progress.

From the very first whistle in January 2018, WE United set out on a path of success that exceeded all expectations. Rising rapidly through the ranks to earn a coveted spot in the Dominica Football Association (DFA) Premier League, the club has demonstrated that with the right mix of passion, discipline, and teamwork, no goal is too lofty. Today, WE United stands tall, not just as a football team but as a source of inspiration to the wider Dominican sporting community.

The Power of Youth and Visionary Leadership

At the heart of WE United’s success is its unwavering commitment to youth development. With over 75% of the team under the age of 23, the club has proven that investing in young talent pays off in remarkable ways. The coaching staff, equipped with training from prestigious organizations like CONCACAF, ensures that each player receives top-notch guidance, both on and off the field. Players are molded not only to excel in the game but also to become exemplary individuals in their communities.

The success stories emerging from WE United speak volumes. Fabio Drigo, a shining example of the club’s dedication to youth, earned a football scholarship at Combine Academy in Nevada, USA. Drigo’s journey from representing Dominica’s Senior Men’s National Team as its youngest player to excelling academically and athletically abroad is a testament to WE United’s nurturing environment. Similarly, Keeyan Thomas, who joined the team in May 2024, has brought leadership, resilience, and a drive to succeed, elevating both the club’s performance and morale.

A Season to Remember

The 2024 season will forever be etched in WE United’s history as a year of triumph and growth. Competing in the DFA Premier League, the Valvoline WE United Premier Team secured an impressive second-place finish, a remarkable achievement that reflects the team’s grit, talent, and perseverance. Despite tough losses in

the finals of both the Premier League and the DFA President’s Cup to CCCUL Dublanc FC, the players exhibited a relentless hunger for success, proving their worth among Dominica’s football elites.

The success did not stop with the premier team. The club’s U20 Boys’ Team went undefeated to claim the DFA Men’s U20 League title, solidifying WE United’s reputation for developing young talent. This achievement represents more than just

a championship—it’s a testament to the strength of the club’s youth-focused philosophy and its enduring vision.

A Collective Effort

The incredible journey of WE United is not solely due to the talent on the field but also to the efforts of a committed executive team, visionary coaches, supportive sponsors, and the unwavering passion of the fans. Special thanks are extended to Auto Trade, agents of Valvoline, the club’s primary sponsor, whose continuous support

has been instrumental in the team’s rise. Local partners like ShyGuy Tours have also played an essential role in raising the club’s profile and engaging fans through innovative promotions.

Moreover, partnerships with organizations like Da Next Level Sports Management & Recruiting Group and DA Sports Vybes have opened new doors for WE United players, allowing them to develop on both personal and professional levels.

Looking Ahead with Gratitude and Determination.

As WE United Football Club prepares for the 2025 season, it does so with renewed energy, ready to continue its inspiring journey. The club’s motto, “Strength in Unity,” encapsulates its mission not only to win on the pitch but also to foster camaraderie, discipline, and personal growth among its players. This mission has been led by Clevon Vidal, who, as both President and Medic, has guided the team with remarkable dedication. Vidal’s dual role has given him a unique perspective on the physical and mental resilience of WE United’s players, and he remains incredibly proud of their collective achievements. “The 2024 season stands as a testament to our hard work and commitment. We overcame the challenges of 2023, fought our way to the top, and the future looks brighter than ever,” Vidal remarked.

In addition to Vidal’s leadership, Yvette Laurent’s vision and love for the club have been instrumental in shaping WE United. Her unwavering dedication from day one has inspired every player, staff member, and fan.

As WE United reflects on its journey, it expresses deep gratitude to all who have played a part in its success. To the fans who cheer from the sidelines, the sponsors who believe in the vision, and the well-wishers who support from near and far—thank you. The club acknowledges that every victory, every challenge, and every achievement is made possible by the power of unity and teamwork.

A Bright Future

As the WE United family looks ahead

to 2025, there is a sense of anticipation and excitement. The club’s future is filled with promise, with young talent eager to make its mark and seasoned leaders guiding the way. Each match, each training session, and each moment spent on the pitch brings the team one step closer to its goals. The story of WE United is far from over. It is a living testament to the power of perseverance, hard work, and unity. With the unwavering support of the Dominican football community, WE United will continue to rise, inspiring others to chase their dreams and play with heart.

As the season unfolds, WE United invites everyone to join in this journey— together, we can continue to write a story that shines as bright as the Dominican sun. Strength in Unity.

A Rising Star of Resilience and Unbreakable Spirit: The Journey of Treneese Hamilton

Inspiration and Early Influences from her earliest days, Treneese Hamilton was surrounded by individuals who recognized her potential and encouraged her to pursue greatness. Her parents and cousin, Joel Hamilton, who also served as her first coach, played pivotal roles in shaping her athletic journey. “They were the ones who pushed me to start Track and Field and helped me realize how far I could go if I remained dedicated to my training,” Treneese recalls. Witnessing others excel locally and abroad ignited her passion for sports, revealing the immense opportunities and freedom it offered.

Her active childhood saw her exploring various sports, starting with netball and branching into Track and Field, volleyball, and basketball. Among her mentors, Joel Hamilton stands out as the person who recognized her talent and worked tirelessly to bring it out. “He made sure I stayed focused and never wasted time,” she says, reflecting on her gratitude for his unwavering support.

Motivation and Mindset Challenges are inevitable in any journey, but Treneese’s motivation stems from her deep dedication to her sport. In difficult times, she leans on a mantra that has carried her through: “I am forever blessed and never stressed, and whatever is happening now is to put me to the test. What do I do with tests? I always pass.” This mindset reminds her that obstacles are temporary and

solvable.

Training Practices and Development Repetition and Visualization are key to Treneese’s success. She often breaks down her throw into phases, focusing on perfecting each step before integrating them seamlessly. Visualization plays a crucial role, as she imagines her ideal technique and feels the movement as she practices. These habits have become foundational to her growth as an athlete.

Leadership and Team Dynamics As a Leader, Treneese emphasizes respect and trust in her relationships with teammates and coaches. By treating everyone equally and maintaining open communication, she fosters a strong sense of camaraderie. “Everyone needs a listening ear, and I always make myself available to those who need it,” she explains, highlighting her commitment to building chemistry within her team.

Balancing Academics and Athletics Managing Academic and Athletic Commitments is no small feat. Treneese relies on meticulous time management, using a whiteboard calendar to track key dates for schoolwork, training, and meetings. “Without it, life would be ten times more chaotic,” she admits. Her disciplined approach ensures she stays on top of her responsibilities while pursuing excellence in both arenas.

Memorable Achievements Treneese’s journey is marked by significant milestones. In May 2024, she broke the NJCAA outdoor shot-put record and clinched national indoor and outdoor titles. Reflecting on her struggles the previous year, these accomplishments represent a powerful redemption. Her most fulfilling achievement, however, was breaking the 12-year Dominican national shot-put record, a goal she achieved just before her 21st birthday. “It was a dream come true,” she says, cherishing the moment as a testament to her dedication.

Personal Growth and Aspirations Athletics has profoundly shaped Treneese’s personal development. It has taught her patience, time management, and the value of connections. Her goals remain steadfast— to make a name for herself and become the best version of who she can be. Beyond sports, she aspires to enter the field of sports science, focusing on preventive care and rehabilitation for athletes.

Message to Young Athletes To the next generation of athletes, Treneese offers this wisdom: “Never forget where you came from. Remember your past to appreciate your present, and let that memory guide your future. The journey is just as beautiful as the destination.”

Overcoming Setbacks Setbacks, Treneese believes, are part of the process. Her faith and resilience help her stay focused on the bigger

picture. “God will not give me more than I can handle,” she says, choosing to view challenges as temporary hurdles on her path to success.

A Day in the Life Treneese’s daily routine reflects her commitment to excellence. Her mornings start early with classes, followed by intensive training sessions, tutoring, gym work, and late-night study sessions. This disciplined schedule demonstrates her ability to juggle multiple demands with precision and determination.

Training in Dominica and Abroad Before moving to the USA, Treneese’s training in Dominica was rigorous despite limited facilities. “The local resources helped me win regional competitions and become a rising star,” she shares. Competing on the international stage taught her that success is about determination and effort, not just reputation.

Cultural Adjustments and Support Systems Adjusting to life in the USA brought challenges, including adapting to a colder climate and a new training regimen. However, her preparation in Dominica, guided by her coach, eased the transition. Her support system, comprising family and the athletic community, remains a cornerstone of her perseverance and success.

Lessons from Coaches Treneese’s coaches have profoundly influenced her journey. Her local coach instilled discipline and dedication, while her coaches in the USA provided access to advanced facilities and resources. Words from her coach about her untapped potential continue to inspire her.

Future Aspirations Looking ahead, Treneese envisions a career in sports science, merging her love for athletics and science to support the next generation of athletes. Her journey exemplifies resilience, passion, and a commitment to growth, inspiring others to dream big and work hard.

Treneese Hamilton’s story is one of triumph, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in her ability to succeed. As she continues to break barriers and set new records, her journey serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for athletes across in Dominica.

Balancing Academics and Athletics

DHAMARIO CHALLENGER

In the picturesque Kalinago Territory of Dominica, Dhamario Challenger’s journey stands as a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and faith. Balancing the dual demands of academics and athletics, Challenger has carved out a path marked by excellence in both arenas. Here’s a closer look at his inspiring story.

Balancing Academics and Athletics

For Challenger, time management is the cornerstone of his success. “I try to manage my time well enough to spend enough time on the field as well as doing my schoolwork,” he explains. While he doesn’t rely on strict schedules, his mental discipline helps him keep track of his responsibilities, even when faced with the temptation to procrastinate. “It’s not every day I want to do work, but I still HAVE to do it—I don’t have a choice.”

Overcoming Challenges

One of the most significant hurdles Challenger faced was an injury in 2020 that sidelined him for six months.

“I learned that even though we may have our plans, God is the one in control,” he reflects. “Regardless of the circumstance, I think it all happened for the better.”

Biggest Accomplishments

Challenger’s achievements are impressive in both academics and athletics. In school, earning six Grade Ones and three Grade Twos was a proud moment. On the field, his selection for the Dominica Men’s National Senior Team remains a dream come true. “It’s something every young footballer dreams of,” he says.

Advice for Younger Athletes

For those who look up to him, Challenger emphasizes focus and discipline. “There are many distractions along the way, and it’s up to you to keep your head on straight. Put God at the center of your goal and let Him guide you.”

Mental Preparation for Big Games

Challenger’s pre-game rituals include studying the roles of his position and watching videos of professional players. “It helps me visualize the game better,” he shares. Music and casual games on his phone also help calm his nerves. Above all, he focuses on maintaining a positive mindset and

eliminating doubts.

The Role of Mentors

Challenger credits much of his success to his mentors. Coach Stanton Seraphine has been instrumental in his football development since first form, while his teachers at Castle Bruce Secondary School provided a strong academic foundation. Special mentions go to Mrs. Sanderson, Sir Rudy, and Mrs. K. Alfred for their guidance and support.

Growing Up in the Kalinago Territory

Growing up in Bataca, Kalinago Territory, played a pivotal role in shaping Challenger into the person he is today. “It allowed me to be hardworking and mentally focused,” he reflects. “Almost like I want to prove a point.”

Challenger credits his upbringing for instilling strong values and discipline. He had the opportunity to attend Lighthouse Christian Academy, a private school in his community. This early education provided him with a strong foundation and great values that continue to guide him.

Coming from a football-loving family that also places a strong emphasis on education has been another key factor in his success. “Having a family that supports both my academic and athletic pursuits has helped me maintain balance in these areas,” he shares.

This unwavering support has allowed Challenger to passionately play football while also striving for academic excellence. “Knowing my family is behind me gives me the confidence to fully commit to football and still work hard to maintain good grades,” he says.

Transition Between Schools

The transition from a private primary school to a public secondary school was pivotal. “Academically, I was lucky to get a good foundation,” he says. While initially shy, playing sports helped him forge new friendships and

boosted his confidence. The change also introduced him to new coaches and teammates, enhancing his development as an athlete.

Future Goals

Challenger’s aspirations are clear: to venture beyond Dominica through a football scholarship and to complete his degree in Agricultural Engineering at the Dominica State College. “I want to see how far football can take me,” he says with determination.

Handling Setbacks

Setbacks don’t deter Challenger; they fuel his drive. “Praying and asking God for guidance, and looking back at how far I’ve come, motivates me to keep pushing forward,” he says. Discipline and faith remain his guiding principles.

The Importance of Teamwork

For Challenger, teamwork is vital both on and off the field. “You can’t play a game with one man on the field,

and you can’t go through life without friends or teammates,” he remarks. This perspective shapes his approach to building relationships and fostering collaboration.

Challenger’s journey is a remarkable blend of hard work, faith, and perseverance. As he continues to excel academically and athletically, he serves as an inspiration to young athletes in Dominica and beyond. With his sights set on greater horizons, Dhamario Challenger is undoubtedly a name to watch in the years to come.

Stephan Pascal

A Journey to Excellence in Cricket

In the dynamic world of cricket, where talent meets strategy, Stephan Pascal stands out as a beacon of resilience, selfbelief, and dedication. A young cricketer with a tactical mind and an innate ability to thrive under pressure, Pascal has already etched his name as a promising talent in West Indies cricket. His journey, marked by determination and a passion for the game, offers valuable lessons for aspiring cricketers worldwide.

The Making of a Leader Leadership comes naturally to Pascal, whose charisma and communication skills have shaped his success as a cricket captain. Reflecting on the qualities essential for a leader, he emphasizes the importance of creating a family-like environment within the team. “As a captain, it’s important to ensure players feel supported. This boosts morale and helps bring out the best performances while keeping everyone happy,” he explains.

Pascal’s tenure as the captain of the West Indies U19 team was marked by his focus on tactics rather than transformational changes. “The team environment was already so good that my role became more about strategy. My preparation centered on understanding the game and making effective decisions,” he says.

Foundations of Success

Behind every great player is a strong support system, and for Pascal, his father has been the cornerstone of his cricketing journey. “My father taught me the importance of self-reliance, reminding me that I had to earn my place through hard work and performance,” he shares. This advice has shaped his exceptional work ethic and approach to the game.

While Pascal acknowledges the influence of various players and mentors, he takes pride in crafting his unique style. “I’ve largely shaped my approach on my own, incorporating elements I admire from others,” he notes.

Navigating Challenges and Building Strength

In the face of challenges, Pascal’s mantra is simple: encouragement and self-belief. “I always preach self-belief to my teammates. It’s the best way to stay motivated during tough games,” he says. His ability to perform under pressure has become his hallmark, a quality he describes as “a natural instinct that kicks in when the stakes are high.”

SPOTLIGHT ON EXCELLENCE

KENYA JOHN

Kenya John has emerged as a beacon of hope and determination in a world where sports often transcend boundaries and inspire greatness. Her journey, from a young girl inspired by her mother to a national athlete representing Dominica, is nothing short of extraordinary. Through netball and football, Kenya exemplifies the values of hard work, resilience, and an unyielding passion for success.

Kenya’s story begins at an early age, watching her mother’s netball games at the Dominica Grammar School. “My mother was the one who inspired me to pursue netball,” Kenya shares. “Watching her team work together seamlessly and observing her swift movements on the court ignited my passion for the sport.” This early exposure not only nurtured her love for netball but also instilled in her the drive to follow in her mother’s footsteps.

As a young national netball player, Kenya has honed several key skills to reach the pinnacle of competition. Mental toughness, she reveals, is the most challenging yet critical attribute. “Developing resilience and maintaining a positive mindset, even in challenging situations, are essential,” she explains. Her rigorous training regimen, coupled with an unwavering focus on mental and physical preparation, has been instrumental in her growth.

Her proudest moments are not just about personal accolades but the collective triumphs of her team. “When my team comes together, sets aside all worries, and fights as one to achieve victory, those moments inspire me the most,” she recalls. These experiences reinforce the power of teamwork and the magic of shared goals.

Kenya’s role as a national player shapes every aspect of her training. From intense physical workouts to skill drills and mental conditioning, her preparation is comprehensive. Before major competitions, she and her team focus on refining strategies, maintaining a balanced diet, and reviewing game footage to analyze both their strengths and the opponents’ tactics. Her advice to aspiring athletes is profound: “Embrace dedication, teamwork, resilience, and faith. Believe in yourself and trust in God for strength and

guidance. With these values, you can achieve your dreams.” Like any athlete, Kenya has faced her share of challenges. One of the most significant hurdles has been coping with losses. “I remind myself that each game is an opportunity to improve and play better than before,” she says. Viewing setbacks as steppingstones to success has helped her maintain resilience and motivation.

Kenya’s athletic journey extends beyond netball to football, a sport that captivated her at a young age. “My journey in football began in 2016 with Montclair United in New Jersey,” she recalls. Being part of the national U20 football team has enhanced her understanding of teamwork, discipline, and strategic thinking. These experiences have also shaped her approach to career development, instilling a commitment to continuous improvement and higher aspirations.

Kenya’s short-term goal is to win the U20 championship for her school, marking a significant milestone in her high school career. Long-term, she aims to play professional netball while pursuing a football career. “I plan to stay dedicated to training, refine my skills, and seize every opportunity to grow,” she asserts.

A typical day for Kenya begins at 6 am, balancing school, training, and family responsibilities. Despite her busy schedule, she remains committed to her education and athletics. “After training, I spend quality time with my family and focus on schoolwork,” she says. Her disciplined routine is a testament to her determination and time management skills.

Kenya’s journey is a powerful inspiration for young girls. Her message is clear: “Stay dedicated, embrace teamwork, and remain resilient. Never let anyone discourage you or make you feel less worthy of becoming a star. With faith, hard work, and perseverance, you can achieve your dreams.”

MOSIAH BONNEY

From the Heart: A Soccer Journey of Passion, Sacrifice, and Ambition

Soccer has always been more than a game to me; it’s a calling deeply rooted in my heart. Growing up, the sport surrounded me—from the stories my mother shared about my father’s skill to watching my older brother’s unwavering dedication. He not only inspired me with his passion but trained me and my younger brother, instilling the foundation of hard work and discipline. The moment I realized soccer was more than just a game came during a defining experience: my brother suffered a serious injury during a semifinal match for DGS. Despite being hospitalized, he pushed through, recovered in time, and played in the finals, leading his team to victory. Seeing his determination and the joy that followed cemented my commitment to approach the game with the same zeal.

Preparation and Mindset: Building the Foundation for Success

Success begins long before match day. My preparation starts in training, where I ensure I’m punctual, focused, and set the tone as team captain. Leading by example is key—I push myself in every drill and encourage my teammates to uphold high standards. Beyond training, I prioritize rest, hydration, and timely meals. On game day, I have a personal ritual: I rise early, take a refreshing shower, and tell myself, “Today is the day to prove them wrong.” This mental preparation sets the mood and sharpens my focus.

Learning from the Greats

Influence plays a significant role in shaping a player’s style, and for me, three legends have had a profound impact. Sergio Ramos’ fearless aggression inspires my defensive mindset, Virgil Van Dijk’s composure and leadership resonate with my role as captain, and his precision in decision-making guides my approach to the game. These players have helped me refine my skills and solidify my understanding of the sport.

Sacrifices and Growth

Every journey demands sacrifices. Personally, I’ve had to forgo social outings and parties to dedicate time to training. Professionally, I’ve adjusted aspects of my gameplay to align with team dynamics and improve overall performance. These sacrifices are a small price to pay for growth and success.

Being named to the All-Region 16 First Team was a milestone in my journey. It marked a step forward from last season’s recognition on the Second Team and reaffirmed my

aspirations. Achievements like this bolster my confidence and enhance my image as I work towards my ultimate goals.

Overcoming Challenges

Challenges are inevitable in sports. Injuries have tested me, sidelining me from the action I love. Yet, I’ve learned the importance of rehabilitation and staying mentally strong. My support system—true friends and family—has been instrumental in helping me overcome setbacks and return to the pitch stronger.

Balancing Academics and Athletics

As a student-athlete, managing time is crucial. I tackle my academic responsibilities early in the week, creating space to focus on training and matches. Sometimes, this means carrying my laptop and homework to away games, but discipline and time management ensure balance.

Dreaming Big and Giving Back

My goals are clear: to go pro and represent my country on the international stage. Achieving this requires consistent hard work, discipline, and the courage to take risks. I also see my role as a leader, setting high standards in training and fostering respect and camaraderie within the team. It’s

about more than performance—it’s about building a culture of excellence.

Advice for Aspiring Players

For young players aiming to reach collegiate or professional levels, my advice is simple: Be consistent, confident, and disciplined. Dedication extends beyond the pitch—it’s about how you train, carry yourself, and balance priorities. Surround yourself with people who support your dreams, and never lose sight of your goals.

The Role of Community and National Pride

Growing up in Cochrane, a community passionate about soccer, shaped my journey. From joining neighborhood games with older players to receiving encouragement from the elderly, my village’s unwavering support fueled my ambition. Representing Dominica at inter-school and national levels has been an honor. Competing for my country, especially as part of the senior team, has been a transformative experience. It has taught me the value of preparation, teamwork, and resilience.

Looking Ahead

Soccer is more than a sport—it’s a way of life that teaches discipline, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence. My journey has been shaped by family, community, and personal determination. To young players reading this, know that success is within your reach if you remain disciplined, work hard, and embrace the challenges along the way. Soccer isn’t just a game; it’s a platform to grow, inspire, and achieve greatness.

FROM DOMINICA TO THE HARDWOOD

KESEAN SHILLINGFORD

Towering at 7 feet tall, Kesean Shillingford commands attention the moment he steps onto the court. But beyond his imposing presence lies a story of humility, determination, and relentless drive. A young basketball talent from Dominica, Kesean’s journey is as inspiring as it is remarkable, a testament to the power of hard work and ambition.

Growing up in Dominica, basketball was more than just a game for Kesean—it was a way to connect with his community and find purpose.

“Basketball wasn’t just a sport; it was a way to bond and grow,” he shares.

While his extraordinary height was an undeniable asset, Kesean understood early on that success on the court required much more than physical gifts.

“Height alone doesn’t win games. It’s the hard work, the discipline, and the constant push to improve that make the difference,” he says.

As a post player, Kesean’s height has certainly given him an edge, but he has worked tirelessly to refine his skills and expand his game. “The game has

evolved,” he explains. “Big men are expected to shoot from outside now, so I’ve been putting in a lot of work on my shooting to become more versatile and stay competitive.”

Transitioning from the basketball courts of Dominica to the fast-paced world of college basketball in the United States was a challenge that Kesean embraced with open arms. As a freshman at Stonehill University, he reflects on the dramatic shift in intensity and competition. “The pace is faster, the players are stronger, and the level of training is on another level. It’s been an eye-opening experience that’s pushed me to grow both as an athlete and as a person,” he says.

Stonehill University proved to be the perfect fit for Kesean, who chose the school for its welcoming atmosphere and supportive community. Off the court, he is pursuing a major in finance, balancing the demands of athletics with academics. “The campus environment at Stonehill is incredible.

Kesean’s journey hasn’t been without its sacrifices. Being away from his family and homeland has been challenging, but it’s also been his greatest motivation. “My family has been my rock throughout this journey. Knowing that they’re supporting me and that I’m representing my island gives me strength,” he says. Dominica remains close to his heart, and Kesean dreams of giving back to his community by inspiring young athletes and creating opportunities for them to thrive. “Dominica is full of talent, but we lack resources. I want to change that,” he adds

Kesean’s immediate focus is on leading his college team to a conference championship, but his ultimate goal is to play in the NBA. “I dream of becoming a professional basketball player, not just for myself, but for my family and my island. I want to show that even a kid from a small island like Dominica can achieve greatness with hard work and perseverance,” he declares.

To young athletes in Dominica, Kesean offers this advice: “Never compare yourself to others. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday. Everyone’s journey is unique, so focus on your growth. Dream big, work hard, and trust the process. It all starts with believing in yourself.”

Kesean Shillingford’s story is a beacon of hope and inspiration, a powerful reminder that dreams are achievable with heart and purpose. From the courts of Dominica to the hardwood floors of Stonehill University, Kesean’s journey continues to inspire, proving that the path to greatness begins with a single step forward.

From Music to Sports:

The Inspirational Journery of

DUNSTAN “MAGGIE” PETERS

Dunstan “Maggie” Peters, a name synonymous with resilience and vision, has transformed the sports landscape in Dominica through sheer determination and an unyielding belief in the potential of youth. As the Director of 767 Sports Club, Peters has dedicated over a decade to nurturing talent and creating opportunities for young athletes. His journey from a musician in the WCK Band to a trailblazer in sports development is a testament to the power of passion and purpose.

“Around 2010, my son Dante’s involvement in football inspired me to get into sports,” Peters recalls. “I had been immersed in music for years, managing artists and organizing concerts. Music allowed me to travel and see the world, and I realized sports had the same potential—a medium for entertainment and global opportunities.”

However, Peters observed a decline in local sports development. “Nothing was really happening,” he lamented. “I saw the immense potential in our youth and felt compelled to step in and make a difference.”

While football dominated the Newtown community, Peters sought a different path. “I didn’t want to embarrass myself on the football field,” he laughs. “So, I turned to basketball, a sport I could grow into. That decision changed my life.”

He formed the Magnificos team, a humble start that eventually evolved into the 767 Sports Club. “People wanted to play for a team they could identify with,” Peters explained. “That’s when I restructured and launched 767 Sports Club, focusing on cultivating young talent and fostering a sense of belonging.”

Peters’ background in music shaped his unique approach to sports. “Athletes are performers, and the court or field is

their stage. My role was to give them the platform to shine,” he shared. Drawing inspiration from basketball tours like “And1,” Peters reimagined sports as a spectacle, blending competition with entertainment.

His innovative mindset led him to document games, create video content, and share it online. This strategy captured regional attention, opening doors for his athletes. A pivotal moment came when his players were invited to a combine in Saint Lucia attended by U.S. college scouts. “Our athletes were selected, and that was the start of something big,” Peters said.

Under Peters’ guidance, the 767 Sports Club achieved numerous milestones. The National Elite Training Program brought together top athletes for intensive camps, fostering rapid development. The club also competed in prestigious regional tournaments, such as the “Battle of the Fifties” in Saint Martin and the Invitational Tournament in St. Lucia.

“Traveling to these tournaments gave our players invaluable exposure and experience,” Peters noted. “But I also recognized the need to host our own events, both to showcase local talent and to boost Dominica’s economy.”

Driven by this vision, Peters launched the Kréyol Basketball Championship, an international tournament that brings teams to Dominica. “We can’t keep going to everyone else’s party. We

need to host our own,” he declared. The championship is more than a sporting event—it’s a celebration of culture, community, and economic development.

Peters’ efforts have helped numerous athletes secure scholarships, opening doors to higher education and professional opportunities. Among them are:

Football: Gylles Mitchel, Andrez Joseph, Romelcia Phillip, Alijah Titre, Fitz Jolly, Montell James, Nick Anthony, Delroy Parker, Usher George, Mosiah Bonnie, Jervan Mathew, Yveterson Exavier, Derwin Eusebe, Fabio Drigo

Basketball: Jacob Barry, Malik Laurent, Kesean Shillingford, Rene Williams, Verd Fontaine.

Peters’ philosophy is simple yet profound: “When preparation meets opportunity, success follows.” His collaborations with experts from the thriving French basketball scene exemplify his commitment to elevating local sports to international standards. “We’re tapping into their expertise to give our athletes the best possible foundation,” he explained.

Reflecting on his journey, Peters encourages young athletes to dream big and act boldly. “If you want to reach the next level, now is the time to prepare,” he urged. “The next level is here for you. Invest in your growth,

embrace the opportunities, and never stop dreaming. Together, we can achieve greatness.”

From his roots in music to his impactful work in sports, Dunstan “Maggie” Peters’ story is a powerful reminder that with vision, determination, and a heart for others, dreams can indeed become reality. His unwavering dedication has left an indelible mark on the youth and sports landscape of Dominica, making him a true mentor and inspiration.
