ZIMBABWE TO HOST HIGH-LEVEL GLOBAL SUMMIT ON MIGRATORY BIRDS OF PREY

Zimbabwe has secured the hosting rights for the prestigious Conference on the Conservation of Migratory Birds of Prey, scheduled to take place in November 2026. The announcement was made by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Zhemu Soda, following a Cabinet meeting that approved a report from the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife.

The international summit, formally known as the Meeting of Signatories to the Raptors, will bring together global conservationists, policymakers, and scientists to address the urgent needs of over 90 species of migratory raptors across Africa and Eurasia.

The species under the spotlight include some of the most iconic birds in the African sky, such as eagles, vultures, falcons, and owls. These birds play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, yet they face increasing threats from habitat loss, poisoning, and climate change during their long-distance seasonal flights. Zimbabwe’s selection as a host underscores its growing influence in international conservation diplomacy and its commitment to protecting the natural corridors that these avian travellers depend upon for survival.

The bid to host the conference was finalized following Zimbabwe’s participation in the 15th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Migratory Species held recently in Campo Grande, Brazil. During that session, the Zimbabwean delegation, led by Environment, Climate and Wildlife Minister Dr. Evelyn Ndlovu, championed the concept of increased ecological connectivity. This principle aligns with the nation’s ongoing efforts to manage transboundary wildlife corridors, ensuring that natural habitats remain linked across borders to support both environmental prosperity and the long-term survival of migratory species.

In addition to the avian focus, the convention in Brazil saw widespread support for the African Carnivores Initiative. This framework serves as the primary mechanism for managing large predators and was bolstered by the adoption of the Pantanal Declaration. This declaration emphasizes regional and international collaboration in the management of transboundary wildlife, a philosophy that Zimbabwe has long integrated into its conservation strategy.

Zimbabwe is hosting the 2026 Raptors Indaba, and will lead the global conversation on how to better protect these magnificent birds, ensuring that the flyways crossing the African continent remain safe for generations to come.
