As Zimbabwe's tourism sector continues its remarkable resurgence, the spotlight is now firmly fixed on an event designed to solidify its future: The Safari Show 2025. Set to take place on November 29th at the picturesque Parklands Business Venue in Harare, this gathering is far more than a trade exhibition; it is Zimbabwe's ultimate networking event, driven by a singular, powerful ambition: To Improve Safaris in Zimbabwe.

Phillips’ goal is for the show to be a day of learning, a catalyst for real change. FREE TO BE WILD SANCTUARY REFLECTS ON A SUCCESSFUL YEAR Text by Martin Chemhere The year 2025 stands as a landmark period for Free to Be Wild, the Zimbabwean primate rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary, representing not only a significant leap in animal care capacity but also a profound expansion of its conservation education mission. Driven by the philosophy that a truly effective sanctuary must protect both the wild animals and the public’s perception of them, the organization’s achievements spanned from the classroom to the semi-wild habitat, reinforcing its commitment to its core policy of rescue, rehabilitation, and ultimate release. The sanctuary’s educational programs, in particular, delivered staggering results in the past year, reaching over 11,000 students across 150 schools in and around the Bulawayo region and even beyond. Through carefully designed classroom sessions and impactful on-site visits, children were fundamentally introduced to the critical importance of protecting Zimbabwe’s native wildlife heritage. Qualitatively, this led to a noticeable and encouraging shift in how students discussed conservation, moving swiftly from passive curiosity to active awareness, which manifested in the creation of community posters, thought-provoking essays, and the establishment of dedicated eco-clubs that continued their work long after the sanctuary’s team had departed.

The dedication to inclusive conservation practices was on of the most heartwarming developments of 2025. In collaboration with partners like Sign Language Interpreter and Dieren Park Amersfoort, Free to Be Wild became the first stakeholder in Zimbabwe to offer Conservation Educational Tours fully accessible in sign language for the Deaf community. These programs were entirely inclusive, with participants engaging directly with the animal care team and even joining in daily feeding routines. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the experience as their “first real connection” to wildlife conservation and expressing deep gratitude for the accessibility of the program. Looking forward, the sanctuary is already planning innovative new engagement activities for 2026, including the introduction of “Keeper for a Day” sessions, where students will shadow animal handlers, help prepare enrichment toys, and learn essential animal tracking skills, further cementing their practical involvement. The educational programs’ success naturally inspired several community members, including a number of teachers, to volunteer their time at the sanctuary, assisting with animal care, enclosure maintenance, and outreach logistics, leading to follow-up partnerships that resulted in new local conservation clubs raising awareness in their neighbourhoods.

The culmination of the year’s infrastructure projects was the opening of the newest semi-wild primate habitat. This expansive, more natural environment now houses a troop of chacma baboons, all at various stages of their rehabilitation journey. The new space is specifically designed to provide the freedom and ecological complexity they require to strengthen crucial troop bonds, develop essential foraging and survival skills, and increase their chances of eventual release back into the wild. Alongside this major development, the organization completed a purpose-built new enclosure for Willow and her unique surrogate family. Willow, who lives with a threelegged disability, acts as the stand-in mother to a surrogate troop made up of orphaned infants, providing them with the immediate care and nurturing they need after having their family and freedom ripped away.

Her new space features multi-level climbing systems, interactive enrichment zones, and a central shelter that allows her to nurture her babies in a calm, secure environment while maintaining vital visibility and communication with nearby baboon groups. Since moving into the new semi-wild habitat, the animal care team has already observed notable physical improvements in the primates—stronger muscle tone, reduced stress behaviours, and improved social cohesion—with many displaying confident, natural behaviours such as grooming, play-fighting, and cooperative foraging, all positive signs of their growing readiness for rewilding. Beyond primates, 2025 brought several major successes for other species, including the successful release of quite a number of animals back into the wild. This included five jackal pups that were raised and rehabilitated from a few days old into thriving, wild, and free jackals, and the dramatic rescue of a young zebra found trapped in a waterhole. Each individual story reflected the sanctuary’s unwavering commitment to giving every animal, no matter how dire their initial condition, a second chance at a wild life.

However, the year was not without significant challenges, including rising feed costs, limited transport resources, a severe dry spell that strained water supplies, and a devastating veld fire that cost the organization over $3,000 USD in stock feed that was lost to the flames. Through the dedication of the team, strategic partnerships, and consistent community donations, the sanctuary adapted by expanding its water catchment systems and sourcing sustainable local feed alternatives through a community upliftment project with local villages collecting natural seed pods for the animals.

With the completion of new enclosures, including upgraded educational facilities and a new quarantine area, the overall capacity of Free to Be Wild has increased by nearly 40%, allowing them to accommodate more rescues while improving living conditions for long-term residents. Founder Baye Pigors reflected on the year’s defining achievements, stating, “Our progress in 2025 wasn’t just about building bigger enclosures; it was about building a bigger community around conservation. Seeing the pure joy on the faces of the Deaf community members as they connected with a baboon for the first time showed us that conservation is for everyone, and accessibility is freedom, too.”

On the subject of the new primate habitats and the future of rehabilitation, she added, “The semi-wild habitat is more than an enclosure; it is a promise fulfilled. It is where we see true wildness return—the grooming, the foraging, the fighting—every natural behaviour that says, ‘I remember how to be wild,’ and it is the single most rewarding milestone we could have asked for this year.” Finally, in looking ahead and appreciating the vital role of partners, Pigors emphasized, “We’ve learned that resilience and collaboration are at the heart of sustainable conservation.

Archaeologists and historians are spotlighting the Matendere historical site in Zimbabwe’s Buhera district, revealing it as the most significant of six ancient stone structures scattered across the region. Positioned majestically atop granite hills, or kopjes, Matendere is a powerful testament to the skill and culture of its builders, sharing unmistakable architectural links with the World Heritage Site of Great Zimbabwe. The complex was constructed using the characteristic Zimbabwean dry-stone technique, a remarkable feat of engineering where precisely hewn granite blocks are stacked without the use of mortar. Surrounding the main citadel are the remains of a substantial ancient settlement. Researchers have identified the foundations of around 40 stone houses, including one circular structure with an impressive 10.4-meter diameter base built on thick stonework. This arrangement points to a large, organized community with a clear social hierarchy, characteristic of the Zimbabwe Culture that flourished between the 11th and 18th centuries AD. While the site remains only partially understood, current research suggests that its earliest foundations may date to the same period as Great Zimbabwe, with later additions and modifications made over time.
