Louisville Country Club

Manager’s Message

Dear Member,

May is truly a spectacular time of year in Louisville! We are so excited for all of the events at the club this summer and as a reminder, the pool will be open on Friday, May 15 for our soft opening weekend, which is just a couple weeks away. Don’t forget to sign-up for Mother’s Day brunch on May 10, and our Memorial Day Pool Party will be on Sunday, May 24. One of the club’s best events of the year is The Party On The Green, which will be held on Saturday, June 6 on our new Event Lawn, so please call the front desk for your reservations.

We had a tremendous ribbon cutting weekend at the end of April to showcase our project’s new outdoor spaces. the Italian Wine Dinner on Friday, April 24 was a huge hit in the River Room with 46 members seated at one long table enjoying a family-style dinner. On Saturday, April 25, the club honored both Scott Sedgwick and Ric Kehres for dedicating over 25 years of service at LCC. The weather was ideal as Chef Michael served his incredible BBQ for over 300 people. It was certainly a weekend to remember at the club.

I would like to remind everyone of a few things as the club gets busier before the summer season begins. Please park large pick-up trucks and large SUVs in the lower lot to allow room for other members to drive through the upper lot; and please drive slowly throughout the lots as well. The age requirement for using the fitness room and locker rooms is16 years and older, so please remind your children. Additionally, now that we have opened the new event lawn area, please make sure that children are not wandering over to the 18th hole, green, and bunkers for their safety – thank you!

We hope you enjoy this wonderful time of year in and around the club, and please don’t ever hesitate to ask for something that will make your member experience just a little better than the day before because if we can do it – it will be done.

Here’s to another phenomenal season at LCC!

Cheers,

2026 LCC

GOLF NEWS

Between the Tees - Golf facts and stories we bet you didn’t know

Vol. 3 - The

PGA Championship

The PGA Championship is a tournament that the city of Louisville knows pretty well, seeing as Valhalla has hosted it twice in the past 12 years. While this tournament is often overlooked, it is not short on facts and stories to make it interesting still. For instance, when the tournament first started in 1916, it was a match play event and remained that way until it was changed to the standard 72-hole stroke play format in 1957. It would normally have a 36-hole qualifier, and the top 32 would compete in a single-elimination bracket that would last 5 days and could require the winners to play over 120 holes of golf in a single week. Thankfully, now the winners only have to play 72-holes of golf to raise the iconic Wanamaker Trophy, which weighs 27 pounds. Another interesting thing about the PGA Championship is it claims both the youngest and oldest major winners in PGA Tour history. In 1922, Gene Sarazen won at the age of 20 at Oakmont Country Club, and at 50 years old, Phil Mickelson won at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island.

Maybe the most important thing about the PGA Championship is that it is organized by the PGA of America, not the Tour. This affords 20 hard-working golf professionals the chance to play in the event. The best a PGA Member has ever finished in the event is T-11th, one by Tommy Aycock in 1974, and another by Lonnie Nielson in 1986. We look forward to a beautiful May to continue this already great golf season.

How important are your strings?

Tennis equipment and technology have improved drastically in the last 30 years. Some of us remember playing with a wooden tennis racquet, white tennis balls and Tretorn canvas tennis shoes. (Man, do I feel old!)

The racquets in the old days were strung with gut or basic nylon strings, and it was very hard to generate spin and/or speed on the ball. I believe that the biggest difference in modern tennis technology’s development is the strings. Today, there are strings for every level and style of player. It is important for all tennis players to identify what kind of player you are and what kind of strings you need to put in your racquet to reach your highest potential. Below is a basic explanation of what’s available to take your game and shot production to the next level!

Natural Gut - Made from animal intestine, traditionally preferred by touring pros, very expensive, great tension maintenance, lively response, easy on the arm, and decent durability.

Multifilament - Made to mimic the construction of natural gut with numerous fibers wound together, easy on the arm so great for tennis elbow, below average tension maintenance and durability, good power and great feel.

Synthetic Gut - The jack-of-all trades, typically less expensive than multifilament, good power and feel but not quite as much as multifilament, good durability, not as soft and playable as multi but easier on the arm than polyester.

Polyester (Monofilament) - What most pros use these days, one solid piece of string material, great durability, low power and feel, less resilient than other types of string so much harder on the arm, good spin potential and control for players with a very fast swing speed, poor tension maintenance. It’s usually recommended to string polyester about 10% lower than other types of string due to its lack of resiliency.

If you get a chance, please stop by the Pro Shop and ask us about what kind of string and what tension your racquet needs to be strung at. You will be amazed what a difference the type of string can make in your game!

See you on the courts, Magnus
