ABOUT THE COVER Every patient has a mountain to climb. K2 Holistic Health is there to help them reach the summit.
K2 Holistic Health is an integrated healthcare clinic built around a simple idea: helping people move better, feel better and live healthier lives.
nerve health. For those who feel fatigue, weight gain, or who just don’t feel like themselves anymore, K2 also works with an extensive list of peptides to help restore the body’s functioning.
The name K2 reflects two important aspects of health: kinetics (movement) and kinesthetics (the neurology behind movement). Rather than focusing only on symptoms, the team at K2 works to identify and address the underlying factors that are contributing to a patient’s condition.
Education is an important part of that process. The K2 team helps patients understand how nutrition, activity, injuries, aging, metabolic health and inflammation can influence the body. When appropriate, treatment plans may incorporate regenerative therapies, hormone optimization, peptide therapy and other approaches alongside rehabilitation and lifestyle changes. A particular key to correcting physiology is by understanding and explaining the process of systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, and mitochondrial dysfunction, that lead to many of our chronic illnesses.
Many traditional approaches to orthopedic pain, neuropathy and hormone imbalances, rely heavily on medications, injections or other treatments designed primarily to manage symptoms. While these treatments can have an important role in healthcare, K2 believes in restoring the body’s correct physiology by addressing the source of the mechanical and endocrine dysfunction. or by addressing That philosophy is why K2 brings medical care, physical therapy and chiropractic care together under one roof. Instead of operating as separate practices, the providers collaborate as one team to create individualized treatment plans based on each patient’s needs and goals. For patients struggling with orthopedic conditions, the focus may be restoring movement, improving strength and reducing pain. For those experiencing neuropathy, treatment may focus on improving function and sensation while addressing factors that can affect
Ultimately, K2’s goal is not simply to help patients feel better temporarily. It is to give them a healthcare team, a restorative plan, and the tools to pursue better health for the long term. Every patient has a mountain to climb. K2 Holistic Health is there to help them reach the summit. For more information or to schedule an visit k2holistichealth.com or call (402) 817-1999.

A recent $37 million federal investment is helping advance a planned $160 million USDA agricultural research facility at the University of NebraskaLincoln’s Innovation Campus, putting a spotlight on Lincoln and the Midwest’s growing role in the future of agriculture.
After a year of planning and construction, Metropolitan Community College Construction and Building Science students watched as the 1,200-plus-square-foot Craftsman bungalow they built over the past four quarters as it was moved to its permanent site at 2861 Ellison Ave. in Miller Park.

The online auction generated strong buyer interest and intense competition, with 18 registered bidders placing 113 bids before the property was ultimately sold. Competitive bidding triggered 36 auction extensions, extending the sale an additional 1 hour and 4 minutes beyond the originally scheduled closing time. The approximately 13.51-acre industrial site attracted attention because of its location, accessibility and existing infrastructure. A major feature of the property is approximately 10.84 acres of 8-inch poured concrete, providing substantial existing value for industrial users needing space for equipment, materials, trailers, containers, fleet operations or other commercial uses. BigIron Realty’s ability to market properties to a broad audience is supported by the BigIron platform, which has more than 850,000 registered bidders nationwide. That expansive buyer network helps create additional exposure, competition and opportunity for sellers. “Having 18 bidders compete through 113 bids and extend the auction 36 times shows what can happen when a property is properly marketed and buyers are given the opportunity to compete,” said BigIron Realty agent Shayne Zutavern. BigIron Realty markets agricultural, commercial, industrial and development properties using online auctions, private auctions, sealed bids and traditional listings. To discuss how BigIron can help your sell your property, contact Shayne Zutavern at (402) 770-1220.

BUSINESS NEWS 2026 Fall Parade of Homes Returns October 17-18 & Featuring 54 New Homes
The Peregrine Hotel, Gilded Feather and Perch Rooftop Give Downtown Omaha Two Distinct Ways to Dine, Drink and Stay Under One Roof
The Metro Omaha Builders Association (MOBA), in partnership with Build Omaha, will present the 2026 Fall Parade of Homes on October 17-18 and October 24-25, 2026, from Noon to 5 p.m. The free event will showcase 54 newly constructed homes across 42 developments throughout the Omaha metro area, with homes priced from $387,000 to $1.4 million.
Gilded Feather and Perch Rooftop replace The Peregrine’s previous restaurant and rooftop bar concepts. They give downtown Omaha two complementary venues inside the historic 1912 Saunders-Kennedy Building. Gilded Feather is polished, warm and food-forward, with seasonal menus and signature cocktails. Perch Rooftop brings a more social, energetic atmosphere with views of the downtown skyline.
The Fall Parade of Homes is one of the region’s most anticipated housing events, offering the public an opportunity to tour a wide range of new construction homes built by some of Omaha’s top builders. The event highlights current trends in architecture, design, technology and craftsmanship across a broad spectrum of price points.
Guests can build a whole evening without leaving the building. They can start with a drink and the chef’s charcuterie board at Perch, head downstairs for dinner at Gilded Feather, and return to the rooftop for a nightcap. Gilded Feather is also meant for everyday dining, not just special occasions. It offers Express Lunch (served in 10 minutes or less), Happy Hour Sunday through Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m., recurring events like Girl Dinner Thursdays, and a private dining room for business dinners and small celebrations.
This year’s Parade reflects the strength and diversity of Omaha’s homebuilding industry. With 54 homes featured across the metro, buyers can explore options that fit a variety of lifestyles, needs and budgets. New for 2026, attendees will have the opportunity to vote in multiple award categories, recognizing exceptional design, innovation and craftsmanship among participating builders.
The goal of the rebrand is to make Gilded Feather and Perch a true local destination: a neighborhood downtown restaurant and rooftop where Omaha diners feel welcome for a quick lunch, happy hour or a full night out. No overnight stay or special occasion is required.
The Fall Parade of Homes is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to download the Omaha Parade of Homes mobile app for driving directions, home details and interactive features.

BUSINESS NEWS Bloomsdale Excavating: A Reputation 80 Years in the Making
MCC Celebrated 35 Years of Tradition at Annual Intertribal Powwow
In heavy civil construction, anyone can move dirt. The difference is what happens when the schedule tightens, conditions change and the project gets difficult.
For 35 years, the Fort Omaha Intertribal Powwow has brought Native American cultural traditions, education and community connection to Metropolitan Community College’s Fort Omaha Campus. The annual event took place on Sept. 12 inside the MCC Center for Advanced and Emerging Technology on the Fort Omaha Campus.
That is where reputations are built. Bloomsdale Excavating has spent eight decades building theirs. It began in 1946 when Marvin Drury, a recently discharged veteran of World War II, started excavating gravel from southeast Missouri creeks with a farm tractor and a two-ton dump truck. From those humble beginnings, Bloomsdale has grown into a full-service heavy civil contractor performing excavation and grading, underground utilities, mining services, drilling and blasting, site concrete and demolition throughout the Midwest. Growth has expanded their reach and capabilities, but scale alone has never defined Bloomsdale. How they operate does. They believe a contractor should bring more to a project than equipment and manpower. Their job is to understand the project, communicate clearly, identify problems before they become expensive and deliver outcomes. Today, as a 100% employee-owned company, the responsibility for protecting that reputation belongs to all. Every project carries their name, and every employee-owner has a stake in what comes next. The equipment has changed. The projects have grown. The geography has expanded. But the standard remains the same:
The free, family-friendly event will featured traditional Native American dance, music, artistry, oral history and food, with participants representing tribes throughout Nebraska and the surrounding region, including the Omaha, Ponca, Santee Sioux and Winnebago. In a Time of Disconnection, Local Author Invites Readers to Remember—We Were Never Meant to Navigate Life Alone Author, speaker, and master connector, Rebecca (Becky) Phipps invites readers to dive into a story of love, resilience, loss and belonging in her debut memoir, Reflections on Life, Love, and Lessons Learned at the Pool, available on Amazon. “What if the most important lessons in life aren’t learned in a classroom—but at the edge of a community swimming pool?” asks Phipps – former high school teacher, corporate executive and non-profit director. Set against the backdrop of a small-town swimming pool, Reflections on Life, Love, and Lessons Learned at the Pool chronicles Becky’s (and the reader’s) journey from childhood adventures and first love to career transitions, family milestones, profound loss and personal growth. Through a collection of deeply personal and vulnerable stories, she explores how the people we meet, the communities we build and the moments we share shape the lives we ultimately live – and what we are remembered for once we’re gone. “This memoir documents the influences of family, music, friends, relationships, teachers, coaches and faith. Reading it will prompt you to consider your own experiences and help you to identify your strengths and challenges. Add this to your reading list; you won’t be disappointed!” Michael McKee, Entrepreneur & CEO, Empower Breakfast. The memoir’s themes of community, belonging, resilience, purpose and legacy resonate with readers of all ages and backgrounds, making it a timely and inspiring read in an increasingly disconnected world. Bankers Trust is proud to support the American Bankers Association’s #BanksNeverAskThat campaign. The initiative reminds consumers of 10 things banks will never ask you to do: Log in with a link via email; Help with an “investigation;” Move money to other accounts; Take urgent action by using scare tactics; Read back text codes on a phone call; Verify your online banking username or password over the phone or by text; Provide your full Social Security Number over the phone or by text; Provide your PIN number just to “verify who you are;” Click suspicious links or open unexpected attachments; Provide your account number, PIN, or address during a phone call or text initiated by the bank. “Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making it important for consumers to know the warning signs of fraud,” said Scott Leighton, Nebraska Market President at Bankers Trust. “Staying alert and taking time to verify unexpected communications can go a long way in protecting your financial information.” If you think you’ve been targeted by a scam, contact your bank immediately, review your recent transactions and update your online banking passwords. FotoFunSpot Brings Lil’ Sketchy to Inaugural UNL Engler Event in Kearney FotoFunSpot recently brought its Lil’ Sketchy experience to Kearney, Nebraska, for the inaugural event hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program. The attendee and family night at Yanney Heritage Park welcomed approximately 150 guests for an evening centered around community, entrepreneurship and a little unexpected fun. The idea started after the client spotted Lil’ Sketchy at another event and reached out to FotoFunSpot about creating a version specifically for Engler. Guests submitted a selfie at a FotoFun Station or through a QR code, selected a caricature style and then watched as their personalized portrait was drawn in front of them. Even when guests chose the same style, no two finished sketches were alike. Behind the scenes, FotoFunSpot customized the experience around the event’s attendance and timeframe, from the number of caricature options to guest flow. Each finished sketch was printed on custom 4x6 paper designed for the event. “Part of the fun is watching people realize the experience isn’t just taking a photo,” the FotoFunSpot team shared. “They get to watch their sketch take shape right in front of them. Before long, other people are gathered around watching too.” The Kearney event demonstrated how FotoFunSpot can tailor Lil’ Sketchy for conferences, universities, corporate events and other large gatherings. BUSINESS NEWS Trees for Nebraska Towns Invests in Greener South Omaha Campus
Two BBB Midwest Plains Businesses Named 2026 International Torch Award Recipients
Ten trees will soon take root at the Metropolitan Community College South Omaha Campus, creating new green space and opportunities for students and the community to learn about urban forestry, sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Two businesses in Better Business Bureau Midwest Plains’ service area — which spans Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota — have been named 2026 International Torch Award for Ethics recipients. This marks the third consecutive year the region has produced two international winners. To even compete for the recognition, businesses had to earn Torch Awards for Ethics at the local level. More than 130 businesses applied for the International Torch Awards this year and of that group, just four International Torch Awards were awarded across the country, split among four employee-size categories: 1-10, 11-99, 100-499 and 500+. BBB Midwest Plains’ 2026 International Torch Award recipients are: • 11-99 employees: Roxi & Co. (Sioux Falls, S.D.; BBB Accredited Business since 2017) — South Dakota’s first-ever International Torch Award recipient. • 100-499 employees: Core Bank (Omaha, Neb.; BBB Accredited Business since 2021) — the third consecutive year an Omaha-area Accredited Business has earned an International Torch Award. International winners were honored at the IABBB Trust Summit in Denver in mid-September and BBB Midwest Plains’ full slate of Torch Award winners were celebrated at the 2026 Torch Awards Luncheon on September 22 in Waterloo, Neb. Core Bank - Core Bank is a full-service, family-owned bank offering a comprehensive range of products and expertise — business banking, construction lending, wealth services, mortgage, and personal banking. Judges recognized Core Bank for pairing strong ethical leadership with a culture built on trust and unity, anchored by an employee reward program judges called a genuine source of cohesion. In 2025, the bank partnered with more than 60 local organizations and gave back over $130,000 to the community. Its people-first values were backed by substance: a welldocumented impact report, strong customer reviews reflecting dependable relationships, and consistently thoughtful application responses. Judges were especially struck by the bank’s community commitment — giving generously of its time, treasure, and talent, and encouraging employees to do the same. “Receiving the International Torch Award for Ethics is an incredible honor and a reflection of who we strive to be at Core Bank,” said John Sorrell, CEO of Core Bank. “Trust is at the heart of our business, and this recognition belongs to our entire team - the people who live our values every day through the way they serve our customers, support one another, and strengthen our communities.” Roxi & Co. - Roxi & Co. is a pet services company named for owner Telly’s late mother, who taught him to do the right thing even when it’s hard or inconvenient. That lesson shapes the company culture: judges praised Roxi & Co. for empowering employees to act on their values without layers of approval, and were moved by Telly’s decision during a product recall to proactively refund customers and personally absorb the cost rather than compromise on quality. Judges also highlighted a culture where employees are coached, heard and grown into leadership roles. The company’s community impact reinforces that reputation for heart and discipline: Roxi & Co. has donated 6,500 bags of pet food to rescues in need. “It isn’t a coincidence that this region has produced international winners in three consecutive years,” said Josh Planos, Vice President of Marketing & Communications for BBB Midwest Plains. “Core Bank and Roxi & Co. earned this recognition by building trust into a daily operational habit, and our communities are better for it. We are proud to see South Dakota and Omaha represented on the international stage.” Since 1996, the International Torch Awards have recognized businesses across North America that demonstrate outstanding dedication to upholding ethical business practices and promoting trust in the marketplace. For more information, please visit bbb.com.
PlantNebraska (formerly the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum) and the Nebraska Forest Service will provide the trees through the Trees for Nebraska Towns Initiative. The initiative supports projects that strengthen community forests through species diversity, thoughtful site selection and long-term stewardship. Nebraska’s community forests have faced ongoing challenges due to extreme weather, insects, disease and lack of tree diversity. Students in horticulture, environmental science and sustainability programs will be invited to participate in planting and monitoring the trees, gaining hands-on experience in urban forestry management. Educational signage and outreach events with partners such as the City of Omaha Parks and Recreation Department are also planned as the new plantings become established. The MCC Facilities Management team will oversee the trees’ long-term care, with maintenance protocols including annual inspections, soil-moisture monitoring and integrated pest management. PlantNebraska’s Trees for Nebraska Towns Initiative is funded by the Nebraska Environmental Trust and the USDA Forest Service through grants received by both PlantNebraska and the Nebraska Forest Service. For more information about MCC, visit mccneb.edu.
Building a Better Omaha Committee Launches Campaign to Support Omaha’s Public Safety and Parks Bond Questions The Building a Better Omaha Committee launched a citywide campaign urging Omaha voters to approve both General Obligation bond questions on the Nov. 3, 2026 ballot. The measures would provide new bonding authority for public facilities and park improvements, with City officials identifying a proposed joint Omaha Police and Fire headquarters and completion of the Tranquility Park redevelopment. The two questions would authorize up to $155 million for public facilities and up to $30 million for park and recreation improvements. City officials have said existing levy capacity is sufficient to repay the bonds, and no increase in the City of Omaha property tax levy is anticipated. The Public Facilities Bond Question, would authorize up to $155 million in General Obligation bonds for public facilities. The City has identified a proposed joint Police and Fire headquarters in the Crossroads development as the principal project associated with the authorization. The 275,000-squarefoot campus would bring key administrative and specialized Police and Fire functions together and accommodate about 300 personnel. It would not serve as a Police precinct or Fire station, and no police cruisers or fire apparatus would deploy from the site. The Parks Bond Question, would authorize up to $30 million in General Obligation bonds for park and recreation improvements. City officials have identified completion of the Tranquility Park redevelopment at 120th Street and West Maple Road as the principal intended use. The current plan calls for 16 synthetic-turf fields. Construction is underway on the first 12 fields, which are anticipated to open in summer 2027, with four additional fields anticipated to open in fall 2027. Learn more at BuildingABetterOmaha.com.

DOUG Doug Fitzgerald
LINCOLN COIN & BULLION Doug Fitzgerald is a Senior Trader at Lincoln Coin & Bullion. Tell us a little about your business. - I’ve always struggled with the question “What do you do?” because apparently, I’ve never believed in doing just one thing. My career has included radio, speaking, writing and entrepreneurship. Today, I’m a Senior Trader with Lincoln Coin & Bullion, my wife Tammie and I own Faux Glow Lincoln, and I continue to speak, emcee and work in media. I’m less interested in being busy and more interested in doing things that matter. How did you get started in the business? - I started in radio at 16 in Albion, Nebraska. That small-town radio station led to broadcasting, speaking, writing, ministry and entrepreneurship. As far as my passion for coins (gold & silver), I started collecting as a young kid and haven’t stopped. I love teaching and educating people about how vital it is to have gold and silver as part of your overall financial plan. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - I’ve been fortunate to host an award-winning nationally syndicated radio show, host a local radio show, build two multimillion-dollar businesses, write a book and speak around the country. But I’m proudest when someone tells me something I said or wrote helped them through a difficult season or gave them courage to take another shot at life. Accomplishments have a shelf life. Impact doesn’t. Tell us a little about your family. - My wife of 35 years, Tammie, and I have four adult children: Dylan and his wife, Hannah, and Sydney and her husband, Skyler. Then earlier this year came our granddaughter, Lainey. She changed the game. I help take care of her three days a week, and I wouldn’t trade those days for anything. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Honestly, right now. For most of my life, success meant building, growing and adding. Now I’m discovering there can be just as much power in subtracting. I’ve removed commitments that no longer fit the life I want. Instead of asking, “Can I do this?” I ask: “Is this truly worth a piece of my life?” What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I’ve accumulated a strange collection of life experiences. I’ve flown in an F/A-18 with the Blue Angels, bungee jumped over concrete with no net, raced a stock car, raced in a hot air balloon, and was one of the original people to test P90X with Tony Horton before appearing with him regularly on QVC. When life gives you an opportunity to do something memorable, you should probably say yes. Although the bungee-jumping-overconcrete in the early 1990’s decision suggests there should be limits to that philosophy. What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – ONESHOT. ONELIFE. We get one shot at this life. Don’t spend it living somebody else’s version of it. If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Encourager. If people walk away believing a little more in themselves and what’s possible, I’ve done something worthwhile. What is your favorite movie? - Top Gun: Maverick. So many leadership lessons in this movie! If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - Jesus. I’d love to hear Him tell the stories behind the stories I’ve spent my life reading. If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - Email doug@oneshotonelife.com.

Vision Maker Media Celebrates 50 Years of Educating Audiences Vision Maker Media is marking 50 years of bringing Indigenous stories to the screen with its 2026 Film Festival, “Everything is Connected.” All year, films funded by Vision Maker Media illuminate Native American heritage, identity, and community through in-person and online screenings. This month’s in-person spotlight is “Untold Valor,” screening at The Ross theater on October 12. This gripping drama honors the Native American Code Talkers of WWII, whose languages became unbreakable codes that helped secure Allied victory. Stick around for a Q&A with writer/director Ise White, lead actor Joe Garza, and Joe Martinez, grandson of the last surviving Comanche Code Talker. Get free tickets at theross.org. Online, three powerful films focus on identity, resilience, and the lasting impact of historical and contemporary systems on Native communities. “Braids,” “Crossing the Line,” and “Uncovering Boarding Schools: Stories of Resistance and Resilience” reveal how individuals and communities push back against forces that have tried to erase Native identity. Watch now at visionmakermedia.org/education. For younger viewers, October’s iNative Shorts for Kids tells stories about modes of transportation. Recovery Works: Building Stronger Women, Families, and Communities Every successful business leader understands the value of investing in potential. Whether developing employees, expanding services or strengthening operations, the goal is the same: create a positive return on investment. The same principle applies to recovery. When a woman enters treatment, the investment extends far beyond her individual journey. Recovery creates lasting benefits for families, employers and communities. Women who once struggled with substance use can secure employment, pursue education, maintain stable housing and become active contributors to society. The return on that investment can be seen in stronger families and brighter futures. Mothers reunite with their children. Families heal. Women regain financial independence and help meet workforce needs across our community. The positive impact reaches far beyond the individual, creating healthier families and stronger neighborhoods. At Santa Monica House, they witness these outcomes every day. They see women rebuild confidence, develop new skills and create lives filled with purpose. Many go on to mentor others, give back to their communities and serve as examples of resilience and determination. Recovery is more than overcoming addiction. It is about restoring potential, strengthening families and creating opportunities for long term success. When businesses, donors and community partners invest in recovery, they invest in stronger women, stronger families and stronger communities. Recovery works, and when women recover, everyone benefits. For more information, visit santamonicahouse.org.

NONPROFIT NEWS Birthday For All: YMCA of Greater Omaha Celebrates 160 Years of Bringing Communities Together The YMCA of Greater Omaha is celebrating 160 years of strengthening communities through Y160, a yearlong celebration honoring the people, stories and connections that have shaped the Y since 1866. As part of the celebration, the YMCA marked its birthday by giving back through Birthday For All, a charitable project that brought YMCA staff together to assemble more than 175 birthday cake kits for local food pantries across the five counties served by the YMCA in Nebraska and western Iowa. The kits included cake mix, frosting, a cake pan, soda and candles to help families create special birthday memories. “Celebrating 160 years is really a celebration of the people who have made the YMCA what it is today,” said Rebecca Deterding, YMCA of Greater Omaha President & CEO. “While the Y has evolved since 1866, our commitment to bringing people together and strengthening our communities has remained. Y160 gives us a chance to honor our history, celebrate our impact today and look toward the future.” Other Y160 initiatives include the 160 Faces of the Y social media campaign, highlighting 160 members, staff, volunteers and community members; 160 Impact Tours showcasing the Y’s work; and birthday celebrations at all 13 YMCA locations in October, including trivia, giveaways, festive décor and a free community week. The Y160 celebration reflects the YMCA’s 160-year legacy while looking ahead to the next generation of community impact. For more information, visit metroymca.org.

Each year, Completely KIDS serves more than 3,500 children and families throughout the Omaha community. For many of the children the organization serves, a donated holiday gift may be the only gift they receive this year. Individuals, families, businesses and community organizations can sponsor one child or as many children as they would like. Businesses and organizations looking to make an even bigger impact can also sponsor an entire grade or school! Sponsors are matched with children and receive their individual wish lists, making it easy to select a personal and meaningful gift. The recommended gift amount is $25–$30 per child. In addition to gift sponsors, Completely KIDS is seeking volunteers to help bring the holiday season to life. Volunteer opportunities include wrapping donated presents and helping staff holiday parties for children participating in Completely KIDS programs. The Holiday Gift Drive is an opportunity for the community to come together and ensure local children feel celebrated and cared for during the holiday season. During the 2026-27 school year, JAG Nebraska will serve 5,500 students through 90 programs across the state.
Established in 2023, the Nebraska Sports Council Endowment has a $1 million fundraising goal and has already received $224,000 in pledges. The endowment is intended to create a lasting financial resource that will help ensure Nebraska Sports Council programs remain accessible and continue serving Nebraskans for generations to come. For more than 40 years, the Nebraska Sports Council has promoted healthy and active lifestyles through events and programs that bring people together through sports and recreation. Today, its programs serve more than 30,000 Nebraskans each year through opportunities for competition, fitness and community connection. “An endowment allows us to think beyond the next event or next year,” said Dave Mlnarik, President of the Nebraska Sports Council. “It gives us an opportunity to build a stronger financial foundation so we can continue providing opportunities for Nebraskans to be active and engaged well into the future.” The Nebraska Sports Council Endowment provides individuals, families and businesses with an opportunity to make a lasting investment in the health and well-being of Nebraska communities. Contributions will help strengthen the organization’s ability to sustain and grow its programs for future generations. To learn more about the Nebraska Sports Council Endowment or how to contribute, visit NebraskaSportsCouncil.com.
A program of United Way of the Midlands (UWM), JAG Nebraska is a for-credit classroom elective for middle and high school that combines hands-on instruction, leadership development and employment experiences. “By creating strong connections between schools and employers, JAG helps students develop life skills, overcome challenges and prepare for success in college, the workplace and beyond – while also helping develop the talent and workforce pipeline Nebraska needs for the future,” said Shawna Forsberg, United Way of the Midlands president and CEO. JAG Nebraska is possible through strong public-private partnerships that include support from the State of Nebraska Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services, school districts, employers and private philanthropy. That collaboration and support from Governor Jim Pillen have helped JAG grow from just three school programs when it launched in 2019 to 90 programs today. Last year, JAG Nebraska achieved a 99% graduation rate, continuing to demonstrate strong outcomes for participating students. JAG’s progress, Nebraska’s commitment to its “Good Life, Great Careers” initiative and SHRM’s Education-to-Employment Pipeline (E2) initiative were highlighted in a proclamation signed by Governor Pillen at the Nebraska State Capitol on Thursday, August 27. “The JAG organization is having an incredible impact on the circumstances of young people and changing their perspectives,” said Governor Pillen. “This program is a game changer for Nebraska youth. We have one of the fastest-growing youth populations in the country, and through this program, we want to ensure every kid is exposed to these opportunities so that their circumstances and potential are off the charts.” Through an expanded partnership with the Nebraska Department of Labor (NDOL), JAG Nebraska is serving as a group apprenticeship sponsor. With this opportunity, students can move from career exploration in the classroom to real-world employment experiences, creating another pathway to develop skills, build employer connections and prepare for future careers. “JAG Nebraska continues to stand out across our national network — exceeding benchmarks while delivering high-quality programming and workforce readiness at an impressive scale,” said JAG National President and CEO Janelle Duray. “Through JAG’s national partnership with SHRM, the world’s largest professional association dedicated to human resources, we’re building on that success by connecting students more directly to the skills and opportunities employers value most.” Schools, employers and other partners interested in supporting students and strengthening education-to-employment pathways through apprenticeships, job shadows or other career experiences can learn more at JAGNebraska.org and SHRM.org/advocacy/ e2-initiative.

Help St. Monica’s Put the FUN in Recovery! At St. Monica’s Behavioral Health Services, recovery is about more than treatment. It is also about helping women rediscover joy, build healthy connections and learn what it means to have fun in recovery. For women living in residential treatment, finding new ways to spend free time can be an important part of building a life without substances. Whether it’s painting a canvas, putting together a puzzle, playing a board game with others or heading outside for a game of volleyball, these activities provide opportunities for creativity, connection and, most importantly, sober fun.
Proceeds from the gala will directly benefit the Midlands Community Foundation Fund. Through its grants and discretionary giving programs, MCF will support the needs of nonprofit organizations serving Sarpy and Cass counties in the areas of arts, community and economic development, education, health and human services. St. Monica’s is asking the community to help by donating new or gently used art supplies, games, lawn and outdoor activities, sports balls and equipment, puzzles, and arts and crafts supplies of all kinds. The spirit of togetherness continues Thursday, Nov. 5, at Outlook Enrichment’s Vision Beyond Sight Gala at A View West Shores in Waterloo, Nebraska. The evening will honor the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11 and America’s 250th with featured speaker Jeffrey Mittman’s firsthand account of loss, service and resilience.
Keeping hands and minds busy can provide a healthy outlet for stress while helping participants discover new hobbies and interests they can carry with them beyond treatment. Sometimes, something as simple as a deck of cards, a basketball or a box of art supplies can create an opportunity to laugh, connect and experience joy.
Mittman, president and CEO of Bosma Enterprises and presidential appointee to the U.S. AbilityOne Commission, is a retired U.S. Army master sergeant and decorated military veteran who lost his vision in the line of duty. He is a nationally recognized advocate for employment opportunities for people who are blind or have significant disabilities.

Autism Action Partnership Connects Omaha Employers with Autistic Talent October is national Disability Employment Awareness Month. Autism Action Partnership (AAP) and other organizations around the Omaha metro know and recognize the value and talent autistic individuals bring to the workforce. AAP’s Prosper Workforce Services (PWS) Program connects autistic job seekers with employment opportunities while partnering with companies that recognize talent that may otherwise go unnoticed, create opportunities for individuals to thrive and value the unique skills and perspectives each employee brings to the workplace. By helping companies tap into an often-untapped talent pool, PWS supports employers in filling workforce needs, strengthening their teams and benefiting from the diverse thinking, problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, reliability and other strengths autistic employees may bring to their roles. “Employment is more than putting someone in a job. It’s connecting the right person to the right opportunity and creating a place where both the employee and employer can both succeed,” said Tonya Fairgood, Program Manager of Prosper Workforce Services. Autistic employees can bring valuable strengths to the workplace, including attention to detail, reliability, dedication, focused expertise, problem-solving and unique perspectives. Prosper Workforce Services helps employers connect with qualified candidates whose skills align with their workforce needs. Eating Healthy Doesn’t Have to Break the Bank with the American Heart Association Rising food costs can make healthy eating feel out of reach. In fact, a 2024 American Heart Association and Research America poll found that about 60% of Americans say the cost of healthy food is their biggest barrier to better nutrition. “Food is deeply rooted in family and community, but as grocery prices rise, finding creative ways to stretch your budget while maintaining a nutritious diet is key,” said Amy Roberts, Community Impact Director for the American Heart Association. “Simple swaps, like homemade vinaigrettes instead of bottled dressings, frozen vegetables instead of fresh, or lentils instead of processed meat, can make a big difference without sacrificing flavor.” Here are a few budget-friendly, heart-healthy options: Choose affordable proteins
“United Way of the Midlands’ support will help change lives by giving participants the knowledge, skills and tools they need to take control of their finances, pursue entrepreneurship and build lasting economic security,” said Juan J. Montoya, Executive Director of LA FUENTE Business Center.

When preparing a home for resale, homeowners have plenty to consider. Remodeling can improve the appearance and functionality of a home, but deciding where to spend time and money is not always easy. A full renovation is not necessarily the answer. In many cases, smaller, strategic improvements can help a home feel more updated and well-maintained while making a stronger impression on potential buyers.
kitchen and bathroom.
Kitchens and bathrooms are often some of the first spaces homeowners consider, but there are plenty of other areas that can influence how a property is perceived. Fresh paint, updated lighting, well-maintained flooring, restored stone and tile, updated cabinetry and small repairs can all contribute to a home that feels move-in ready. For homeowners working with a limited budget, knowing which projects to prioritize can be especially important.
Along with what buyers look for, many trends are arising in the market to make a home feel more market-ready and competitive, which overall can make a home feel more like a home.
The goal is to make improvements that appeal to a broad range of buyers without putting more money into a project than the home can reasonably support. Overly personalized designs or major upgrades that do not fit the home may not provide the return homeowners are hoping for. Instead, focusing on cleanliness, maintenance, functionality and timeless updates can help a property stand out when it is time to go on the market. When it comes to remodeling for resale, there is no single project that will work for every home. The best place to start is by looking at the current condition of the property and determining which areas are most likely to affect a buyer’s first impression. From larger updates to simple cosmetic improvements, local professionals can help homeowners determine what is worth addressing before listing their home. Homeowners have plenty to consider when it comes time for remodeling or reselling. Edgewater Construction shares some insight into which projects are worthwhile for your home. When homeowners remodel with intentions of selling Edgewater Construction believes the projects that tend to make the biggest impact on buyer appeal and resale value are the #PrintProudDigitalSmart
“Prioritize replacing outdated hardware, installing new countertops and upgrading lighting,” said Kyle Smith, owner of Edgewater Construction. “Additionally, replacing worn flooring with hardwood or high-quality LVP and enhancing curb appeal with fresh landscaping provide the strongest return.”
“Buyers currently prioritize move-in ready, low-maintenance spaces,” said Smith. “Key trends include open-concept layouts that maximize flow, the integration of smart home technology and the use of modern; warm-neutral paint palettes that make homes feel brighter and more spacious. Beyond what is trending and what helps drive up value, there are still projects you should make a priority if you are planning to remodel, resell or both. If you do have a smaller budget Smith recommends focusing on cosmetic refreshes. “A full interior paint job in neutral tones offers the highest ROI,” said Smith. “Supplement this by replacing dated light fixtures with modern LEDs and completing a “honey-do” list of minor repairs, such as tightening hinges, fixing leaky faucets and replacing cracked outlet covers, to signal a well-maintained home.” Smith shares remodeling mistakes that homeowners should avoid is over-improving. Steering clear of niche design choices, bold colors and prioritizing aesthetic upgrades over essential maintenance is important for a proper remodel. If you need a professional assessment of your home’s specific needs, feel free to contact Edgewater Construction at 402-419-3208 or visit edgewaterconstruct.com. While proper maintenance is important, restoring your stone, tile or grout surfaces will help potential buyer interest for a couple of reasons according to Lifetime Stone Restoration.

RESELL REMODEL are not ones they need to worry about fixing or replacing once they move in. “If a potential buyer sees a dirty shower, cracked stone tiles on your floor or chipped granite counters, they know they will have added expenses if they buy the home,” said Don Mlnarik, owner and operator of Lifetime Stone Restoration. When selling your home restoration is DON MLNARIK better than replacement of surfaces. Restoration is cheaper than replacement. Refreshing a surface— whether a counter, shower or floor—will make the area look clean and possibly even new. “You could replace something for a lot more money and potential buyers might not like what you picked out and will want to tear it out and replace it themselves with either a product or color they like better,” said Mlnarik. Some of the main issues Mlnarik sees before homeowners list their house for sale are removing hard water deposits and re-polishing around their kitchen counter sink. “I also get called to clean tiled showers by removing mildew, soap and re-caulking around the base and corners,” said Mlnarik. “If they have stone floors they usually want these cleaned and possibly polished back up.” There are many things to keep in mind when reselling. Don’t let your stone be one of your worries. Please reach out to Lifetime Stone Restoration with any questions you may have, call at (402) 916-1700 or visit them at lifetimestone.com. For homeowners thinking about resale, the kitchen is one of the most important spaces to consider when deciding where to make improvements. Buyers pay close attention to the kitchen and an updated, functional space can help make a strong first impression while improving the home’s overall marketability. Cabinetry can play a major role in that impression. Outdated cabinets can make an otherwise well-maintained kitchen feel older, while new cabinetry can give the entire room a refreshed look. Cabinet IQ specializes in new cabinetry rather than refinishing or re-facing existing cabinets. For homeowners already planning a kitchen update, replacing the cabinetry provides an opportunity to rethink the space. However, preparing a kitchen for resale does not always require a complete remodel. Smaller changes can go a long way, especially when your existing kitchen layout already GREG ALLEN functions well. Replacing hardware, adding or updating lighting and installing new countertops can help modernize your space without changing everything. Homeowners who want new cabinetry while keeping costs under control can also consider a “pull-and-replace” approach. This removes the existing cabinets and installs new cabinetry while essentially using the same layout. Keeping plumbing, appliances and other major elements in their current locations can help reduce the project’s scope and overall cost. Ultimately, the goal when remodeling for resale is to make

From the bones to the beauty of your home, there are always improvements that can be made. The right remodeling company can help you identify these potential fixes that will increase your home’s value and the pull it has with buyers. Kitchens and bathrooms are by far one of the most looked at and, let’s be honest, criticized parts of homes. It needs to fit the families or individual lifestyle of the buyer. Do they need extra counter space, fridge space or a full pantry to store food and drinks? However, you can’t possibly determine what is a perfect space for the perfect buyer so landing somewhere in the middle, making common sense upgrades and renovations is the best way to go about and having the right remodeling partners makes sure you’re making the right upgrades for the right price. It’s important to remodel for the potential buyer and not for yourself. Yet, small improvements can make a noticeable difference. While in some cases a total renovation might be necessary, it’s not in all cases. Things like new fixtures, lighting, mirrors, counter tops, flooring, paint or hardware can refresh a room and give it an entirely new look. Those are the big renovations people think about, but the little details people overlook about are just as important to update. Taking the time to evaluate which projects are necessary and which updates may offer practical benefits can help homeowners make informed decisions throughout the process. By paying attention to both the visible details and the underlying condition of their property, homeowners can work toward creating a space that is well-maintained, comfortable and ready to welcome its next occupants. #PrintProudDigitalSmart

When most people think of health, they think of getting a mild cold in the wintertime. They think of going to the doctor and getting medicine to help you feel better. But health is not just a stuffy nose and a headache; it can span more parts of your life than you think. People need rehabilitation for injuries, treatment for problems with skin, eyes and muscles, and sometimes a way JEN HELMS to manage pain. Holistic health can mean different things to different people, but generally people agree that those who practice holistic health consider the person as a whole. These Omaha businesses take into account the many complex
moving parts of people when they provide their services. BODYBAR Pilates offers a full-body workout designed to build strength, improve mobility, increase flexibility, and develop better balance and body awareness. The BODYBAR Method is athletic, challenging, and dynamic, while still being adaptable to different fitness levels. Consistent Pilates practice can help individuals develop a stronger core, improve posture and alignment, increase muscular endurance, and support overall physical fitness. Beyond the physical benefits, Pilates also encourages mindfulness and a stronger connection between the body and how it moves. One of the biggest benefits of Pilates is that it teaches people to move more efficiently and with greater awareness. The strength, stability, balance, mobility, and coordination developed in class can translate directly into everyday life. Whether someone is lifting their kids, carrying groceries, sitting at a desk, climbing stairs, playing a sport, or simply getting through a busy day, having a stronger core and better body awareness can help them move with more confidence and control. At BODYBAR, they focus on purposeful movement that helps people build strength they can use both inside and outside the studio. Pilates can also help support individuals who experience everyday aches and discomfort by strengthening the muscles that help stabilize and support the body, while also improving mobility, posture, and movement patterns. A stronger core and better alignment can reduce unnecessary strain on the body and help individuals develop more efficient ways of moving. Pilates is also low-impact, making it an approachable form of exercise for many people. At BODYBAR, the goal is not to diagnose or treat pain, but to help people develop strength, mobility, and body awareness that can support healthier movement. Anyone experiencing persistent or significant pain should work with an appropriate healthcare professional to determine the cause and the best approach for their individual needs. “I think the biggest difference between traditional health and holistic health is the way we look at the individual as a whole. Traditional health can sometimes focus primarily on treating a specific symptom, condition, or physical issue, while a holistic approach looks at how different aspects of our health work together—including movement, strength, mobility, nutrition, stress, sleep, mindset, and overall wellbeing,” says Allie, Fitness Manager at BODYBAR. At BODYBAR, they believe movement is an important part of that bigger picture. Pilates isn’t just about how someone looks or how many calories they burn during a workout. It’s about building a stronger, more capable body, developing confidence in movement, and creating habits that support how someone feels and functions in

their everyday life. At K2 Holistic Health, they often find that some of the most important foundations of health are also the easiest to overlook: eating well, moving regularly, and challenging the body with resistance to maintain strength. These fundamentals affect how people function, how people age, and how well people’s bodies respond when something begins to go wrong. But K2 JASON HOWE also looks deeper. Rather than asking, “What symptom does this patient have?” they want to understand why their physiology has changed and what they can do to help restore healthier function.
holistic health is often overlooked despite the respect and care that comes with it. Holistic healthcare has its own benefits that rival those of traditional health. Holistic healthcare is well known to focus on overall well-being, personalized treatment plans for individual issues, and an emphasis on prevention rather than just treating symptoms. All of this leads to making daily changes, meaning individuals will have a healthier lifestyle and less problems they will need to deal with overall. When people are treated holistically by local Omaha professionals, the whole person is taken into consideration, and their needs can be met by finding the root cause and working with every part of the individual.
That philosophy extends throughout K2’s integrated approach to healthcare. For someone struggling with orthopedic issues like arthritis, the conversation doesn’t have to begin and end with repeated corticosteroid injections or surgery. Depending on the individual, Sarapin, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), or regenerative therapies may be worth discussing. With neuropathy patients, K2 looks beyond simply masking nerve symptoms like pain and numbness/tingling, to correcting the factors that led to the neuropathy in the first place. One of the most common things K2 hears from patients is, “I thought this was just what getting older felt like.” They’ve gradually become more tired. Their weight is harder to control. They don’t sleep as well. They hurt more. Their strength or mobility has declined. Because these changes happen slowly, people often accept them as inevitable consequences of aging. But aging and poor health aren’t synonymous. Systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, and mitochondrial dysfunction lead to significant metabolic compromise. This process is often the source of fatigue, decreased muscle mass, nutritional deficiencies, and poor sleep. Throw in hormonal imbalances as well, and the person will undoubtedly be missing out on their best life. Identifying those changes creates opportunities to intervene. This is where peptide therapy can help restore the correct physiological processes, and K2 is an expert nationally in this area, as they help people from coast to coast with their peptide management. At K2, they ask an additional question: What physiological processes contributed to this patient’s problem in the first place? K2 stands for Kinetics and Kinesthetics—how people move and the neurological processes involved in movement and physical function. Their goal is to help patients improve not only a diagnosis or symptom, but how they move, feel, and function. Every patient has a mountain to climb. K2 Holistic Health’s job is to understand the obstacles, bring together the right disciplines and therapies, and help guide them toward the summit of their health. Health encapsulates so many parts of life; while traditional health tends to take center stage with its focus on managing symptoms, #PrintProudDigitalSmart
