Celebrating 250 Years of American Enterprise
July is always a meaningful month. It is a time when we celebrate freedom, independence, opportunity and the American spirit that continues to shape our communities and country.
This year feels especially significant as the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary.
American businesses have been the foundation of our economy and the backbone of our communities. From familyowned companies to nonprofits and industry leaders, local organizations continue to create opportunities, provide services, support causes and strengthen the communities we call home.
For years, Strictly Business has had the privilege of sharing those stories. As our Lincoln publication celebrates 33 years this year, we are grateful for the relationships, partnerships and business successes we have seen through Nebraska, including the tremendous growth and entrepreneurial spirit we continue to see here in Omaha.
That is what business is really about.
It is not just advertising or a press release. It is not just sales. It is not just a logo, a storefront or a website. Business is people. It is families taking risks. It is entrepreneurs betting on themselves. It is employees showing up every
day. It is relationships built over time. It is trust earned one customer, one client, and one handshake at a time.
As America celebrates 250 years, we are reminded that local businesses have always been at the heart of this country’s strength. They create jobs, build communities, support nonprofits, sponsor youth programs, invest in local causes and keep dollars circulating right here at home.
At Strictly Business, we are honored to play a small part in that story.
Our mission has remained the same from the beginning: to help businesses be seen, known, and trusted. Through print, digital content, press releases, cover stories, Client Spotlights, social media, and online visibility, we continue to help our clients share their stories and connect with communities they serve.
To our advertisers, readers, clients and friends… thank you. Thank you for believing in local business. Thank you for supporting Strictly Business. Most importantly, thank you for supporting the entrepreneurs, organizations and professionals who make our communities stronger. Be sure to let a company know when you discovered them through Strictly Business.
Here’s to freedom. Here’s to local business. And here’s to the next chapter of growth, opportunity, and success for our communities.

Metropolitan Community College (MCC) has earned the 2026-2027 Military Friendly® Schools designation as a Gold Level School and Top Ten Military SpouseFriendly® School designation for creating meaningful education paths for militaryconnected students.

Founded in 2003, Military Friendly® is a ratings entity that measures an organization’s commitment, effort and success in creating sustainable and meaningful benefits that support veterans, service members and their families. Institutions earning the Military Friendly Schools® and Military Spouse Friendly® School designations were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. Over 3,200 organizations participated in the Military Friendly® survey. According to Military Friendly, a Gold Level School designation places MCC in the top 10% in the large community college category.
“Receiving these designations is an honor that reflects Metropolitan Community College’s ongoing commitment to our military-connected students and their families,” said Daniel Mohr, director of the MCC Veterans and Military Resource Center. “This recognition highlights the collective efforts of our staff and faculty to create safe and supportive environments where military-connected students can succeed.”
The College’s commitment is reflected in both military-connected student enrollment at MCC, as well as student outcomes. Since 2020, enrollment of military-connected students has risen by more than 35%. To receive the 2026-2027 Military Friendly® School designation, MCC survey response rate had to meet minimum thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment and loan default rates for all students, and, specifically, for student veterans.
The Veterans and Military Resource Center (VMRC) on the MCC South Omaha Campus is a welcoming space where military-connected students can connect, unwind and thrive. It serves as a resource hub for veterans, active duty, guard and reserve and their family members, connecting them with benefit navigators, on-site VA and veteran service organization representatives and more. It also provides access to educational and academic planning and tutoring, private study rooms, a computer lab, secure lockers, a quiet room, and complimentary beverages and snacks.
Mohr said creating the supportive environment for military-connected student success is a collective effort. The seven-member VMRC team was awarded the $50,000 MCC Think Tank Scholarship to obtain funding for veterans with employment gaps who do not have VA education benefits.
In addition to VMRC staff, Hayley Aniol, MCC director of Institutional Research, was a key partner in supporting the application process, along with team members of the Financial Aid office.
“I was passionate about supporting the application for the designations because it recognizes the incredible work the Veterans and Military Resource Center does to support our military community,” said Aniol, a former military-dependent. “I know firsthand how impactful maintaining connections to the military community can be to be successful in college and beyond. The VMRC ensures our military-connected students have that connection and support the moment they join MCC.”
With the 2026-2027 Military Friendly Schools® designation, MCC will be showcased with a school profile on MilitaryFriendly.com.
Military Friendly® is not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Defense or the federal government. Results are produced via a rules-based algorithm. The data-driven Military Friendly® lists and methodology can be found at militaryfriendly.com.

For many young people, a first job is more than a paycheck. It is a place to learn how to show up, solve problems, meet people and begin to see what is possible.

That is the idea behind Step-Up Omaha, the Empowerment Network initiative that kicked off its 2026 summer program on June 2. The program connects youth and young adults ages 14 to 21 with paid work experience, career exploration, internships and entrepreneurship opportunities. Since 2008, Step-Up has helped more than 9,000 young people gain workforce experience. This year, more than 1,800 youth applied and according to a report by PPRP Innovations, nearly 100% of employers anticipate participating in the program this year.
Step-Up also creates early pathways to business ownership and helps to develop and retain local talent. Through Transformation 2030, the Empowerment Network has set goals to support 2,000 annual youth jobs and 500 youth entrepreneurs.
Devaute Nunn, owner of Haven Express, is one example. Recently featured by KMTV-TV (Channel 3 News), Nunn joined Step-Up at age 14. His first placement was at a bank, an experience that helped him better understand what he wanted to build. Today, Haven Express includes a food truck and a brick-and-mortar restaurant downtown. Nunn is giving back by opening doors for the next generation of Step-Up participants. Other alumni have also become entrepreneurs or successfully entered the workforce in Omaha.
Local employers can play a direct role by hosting or sponsoring interns. Learn more at stepupomaha.com/employers.

First Interstate Bank was awarded the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence for Philanthropy.

At First Interstate, giving back isn’t a line item — it’s woven into how business is done. Through an innovative corporate philanthropy program, First Interstate donates a portion of Company profits, matches employees’ personal financial contributions and donates $10 for every hour team members volunteer at qualifying organizations. The Believe in Local grant campaign awards $1 million annually to 40 nonprofits across the 10-state footprint, and the yearly Volunteer Day mobilizes the entire bank for a single day of service.
Throughout 2025 in the Omaha metro, employees led 15 Volunteer Day projects serving 13 nonprofits, delivered more than 150 hours of financial literacy programming and gifted 14 local teachers $500 each through the Pay It Forward initiative to support classroom needs. From weekly financial education classes at MICAH House in Council Bluffs to funding musical instruments for Carter Lake Elementary, First Interstate shows up for the communities that count on them.
First Interstate was named a recipient of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce’s 2026 Business Excellence Award in Philanthropy. The Philanthropy category recognizes organizations, small and large, whose philosophy of giving back makes a significant impact on the Omaha metropolitan community’s health and well-being — honoring those who go above and beyond to foster a spirit of generosity and support.
“This recognition reflects the heart of who we are at First Interstate,” said Tim Legband, First Interstate’s Nebraska State President. “We believe a community bank has a responsibility to invest in the places it calls home — not just financially, but through the time, energy, and expertise of our people.”

Many business owners believe their biggest challenges are the economy, staffing, competition or lack of time.

According to Carter Krei, Business Coach with ExcelEdge ActionCOACH, the real obstacle is often something more controllable: the habits of the business owner.
“Your business today is largely a reflection of your habits,” says Krei. “The way you lead, prioritize, delegate, market and manage your time directly impacts your results.”
When growth stalls, many owners respond by working harder and longer. While this may create short-term gains, it often reinforces the bottlenecks that prevent sustainable growth. Krei believes the key is not doing more but doing different things.
Healthy, scalable businesses are characterized by strong profitability, effective systems, high-performing teams and reduced dependence on the owner for daily operations. Achieving this requires intentional changes in leadership habits and business processes.
To help local business owners identify opportunities for growth, ExcelEdge ActionCOACH is offering a limited number of complimentary 30-minute Business Strategy Sessions. Participants will receive a personalized assessment focused on increasing profits, strengthening their team and building systems that allow the business to operate more efficiently.
“Most business owners have untapped opportunities already inside their business,” says Krei. “Sometimes all it takes is a clear plan and an outside perspective to uncover them.”
To schedule a complimentary strategy session, visit goexceledge. actioncoach.com/omaha-coachs-calendars.

Kirsch started as a small, family-run operation and grew into a nationally recognized transportation brokerage and logistics partner. Throughout the years they have earned industry awards, national rankings, and formed long-term partnerships with some of the most respected companies in the country. Growth was never the goal by itself. Growth was the result of doing the job right, year after year, shipment after shipment, customer after customer.
Twenty-five years later a lot has changed in the logistics industry. Technology has changed. Markets have changed. Supply chains have been tested in ways no one expected. But the way Kirsch does business hasn’t changed nearly as much as the world has, and that’s something they’re proud of.
From the beginning, Kirsch was built to be relationship driven. What has always mattered most to them is being the company that answers the phone, finds a solution, and does what they say they will do. Shipper & carrier partners have confidence that Kirsch knows their freight, understands their challenges, and delivers solutions tailored to their unique needs and expectations. That culture-driven, small-team approach is still how Kirsch operates today. Great service in logistics doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from experienced people who care, communicate, and take responsibility when things get difficult — because in this industry, something always gets difficult.
The team behind Kirsch Transportation thanks you for being part of their first 25 years and looks forward to the road ahead.

As national conversations surrounding autism services continue to evolve, Behaven Kids remains committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care for children and families across Nebraska.

Recent national media coverage has highlighted two important discussions impacting the autism community: the growing influence of autistic self-advocates in shaping public understanding of autism and concerns surrounding fraud and billing abuse within portions of the ABA industry.
While these conversations bring valuable perspectives, they also underscore the importance of individualized care and ethical service delivery.
At Behaven Kids, they believe every child deserves support tailored to their unique strengths, challenges and goals. Modern Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy focuses on building communication, independence, emotional regulation and meaningful life skills while honoring each child’s individuality.
They also support transparency and accountability within healthcare. Families deserve access to high-quality, medically necessary services delivered responsibly and ethically. As providers and policymakers work to address concerns within the industry, it is critical that efforts to improve oversight do not unintentionally limit access to care for children who rely on these services.
With recent Medicaid reimbursement reductions impacting autism providers throughout Nebraska, Behaven Kids continues to advocate for sustainable solutions that protect both quality care and family access to services especially as one of the few locally headquartered providers.
Through collaboration, compassion and accountability, Behaven Kids remains dedicated to helping children and families thrive throughout our Southeastern Nebraska communities. For more information, please visit behavenkids.com.

The Nebraska Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement (CIRA) are convening the second Welcoming Workforce Summit on Thursday, July 23 at Holthus Convention Center in York. This summit is for Nebraska employers and organizations to learn and connect about today’s immigration landscape.
The event is sponsored by the Nebraska Alliance for Thriving Communities. The Alliance was established in 2024 and comprises more than 70 Nebraska organizations working to identify and effect change in state and federal policies to make Nebraska attractive to immigrants.
“Immigrants and refugees are essential to Nebraska’s workforce, economy, and communities. This summit will focus on real strategies to ensure Nebraska remains a place where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and thrive,” said CIRA Director of Community Engagement Khenda Mustafa.
At a time when changing immigration policy is impacting Nebraska’s economy and communities, the summit will create space for business leaders, organizations and policy makers to have conversation and identify practical solutions grounded in the broad support Nebraskans share for immigration policies that help families thrive and keep local systems strong.
Through panel discussions, workshops, and a resource fair, attendees will gain practical guidance on immigration law and employer rights and responsibilities while learning how to strengthen and support their workforce. An inaugural summit was convened in 2024 by CIRA and the NE Chamber.
The event is open to the public and registration is required, at bit.ly/4dIEUT4.

Annisa Visty THE SARPY COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Annisa Visty is the Vice President of Operations at The Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce

Tell us a little about your business. - To me, the Sarpy Chamber has always had the feel of a small-town organization while serving an entire county. It’s a place where businesses don’t just grow, they become engaged, connected and part of the community. We help businesses of all sizes build relationships through networking, education and opportunities that create long-term success.
How did you get started in the business? - I started working for the chamber in 2009 as the office manager and eventually transitioned into event management. Over the last 20 years, there aren’t many hats I haven’t worn at the Chamber. Those experiences have given me a unique perspective on both the organization and the community. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - As someone who is more introverted, building confidence in sales and learning how to engage others professionally was a challenge. I remember the first time someone told me I was a great salesperson—I was completely caught off guard. Over time, I realized sales built through genuine relationships and personal connections fit naturally with who I am.
What has been your most important achievement professionally?I left the chamber for about five years to pursue another opportunity, and while I loved that role and remain very involved there, being asked to come back to the Chamber was meaningful. It felt like validation of the work I had done and gave me a renewed sense of pride in helping the organization.
Tell us a little about your family. - Family is everything to me. I have two wonderful boys, Jaks and Trey. Jaks recently married my amazing daughter-in-law, Gracey, and just purchased their first home in Grand Island. Trey is finishing high school and getting ready to take on whatever comes next. I also have an incredible partner, Jason Tasler, who keeps me grounded. Through Jason, our family has grown even more with Madison, Kohlton, Jaslyn and her husband Cody, plus two beautiful grandbabies, Cameron and Kendra.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Spending time at our family cabin is my favorite way to recharge. It’s been in my dad’s family since the 1950s, and while it has evolved over the years, it still feels like home.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “It’s so much easier to choose happiness than it is to spend your days angry and mad at the world.”
What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - Ha! Probably my unnecessary amount of sports knowledge. Don’t ask me about Formula 1, but most other sports I can hold my own.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I love our local community foundations and all the amazing work they do, I try and get involved when I can to help them. I also love the guys at the American Legion Post 32 and helping support their fundraisers. I would also be in trouble with my other half if I didn’t mention his and by proxy my involvement in Mustache4Kids Omaha and the amazing work they do each year.
What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I read them every year.
If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - You can reach me at operations@sarpychamber.org.

Gisselle Garcia-Diaz FOREST LAWN FUNERAL HOME AND CEMETERY
Gisselle Garcia-Diaz is a Funeral Director at Forest Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery

How did you get started in the business? - Like many people, a life experience brought me to a career in funeral services. When I was in high school, my younger sister’s best friend took her life, she was like a little sister to me. That turned my life upside down and gave me a different perspective. It drew me into a rabbit hole, exploring different careers in this field. There were many things I know now that I would have not done then – in her services and appearance. Now, during the difficult time when families experience a loss, I am able to be there to guide them, ease the process and bring some type of comfort.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? My start in the funeral service industry began fresh out of high school, at 17 years old. I feel fortunate that someone gave me a chance to pursue this path at that age. I have worked in funeral homes since then. Being so young, and a Hispanic woman, has brought its own challenges, but I have never let that stop me. It just motivates me to continue to be the best I can be.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? - I am proud that I have been able to help as many families as I have. I do not expect them to thank me because they are going through so much. When they do, though, it makes me feel like I am making a difference and that what I am doing does matter. It continues to drive me to be that comfort and peace of mind for every family.
Tell us a little about your family. - My fiancé Alex and I will be getting married in November. We have a fur-baby, Ruger, a 7-year-old boxer that likes to be at the center of attention in our lives.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my fiancé Alex and our boxer, Ruger. We go on walks and fish together. Alex and I also love trying new food places and going on adventures!
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Resilient is the single word that best describes me. Coming from immigrant parents and being so young and career driven, I adapt well to situations and challenges – including recovering from thyroid cancer a few years ago.
What is your favorite local Omaha restaurant? - Pla Too Thai or Yoshitomo are two of our favorite places to go.
If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? - Readers can reach out through the main number at Forest Lawn, (402) 451-1000, or e-mail ggarciadiaz@forestlawnomaha.com.
Neil Riley METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Neil Riley is the Associate Dean of Math and Natural Sciences at Metropolitan Community College

Tell us a little about your business. - Metropolitan Community College provides students of any age with accessible, affordable opportunities to pursue their goals. As Associate Dean of Math and Natural Sciences, I work with faculty and staff in mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, general science and the new biotechnology programs. What I enjoy most about my role is helping faculty and staff have the tools, resources and support they need.
How did you get started in the business? - I originally set out to become a math teacher. Math did not always come easily to me, and I had to work hard to succeed, which helped me understand the challenges many students face. I enjoyed the structure of mathematics, but what I enjoyed most was working with students. Helping students build confidence and discover they could be successful in math was the most rewarding part. While my career has evolved into leadership roles in both K-12 and higher education, I still consider myself a math teacher.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? When I think about the impact of my work, I think about former students and colleagues and the paths they have taken. One of the most rewarding parts of education is hearing from former students and knowing I played a small role in their journey.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - One of the biggest turning points in my life was realizing that my impact in education could extend beyond the classroom. When I began my career, my goal was simple: I wanted to teach mathematics. I never envisioned pursuing leadership roles. Over time, opportunities to support teachers and students led me down a different path. I am grateful I was open to those opportunities because they ultimately led me to higher education, where I have been able to combine mathematics and educational leadership.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Travel and explore new places. While I enjoy traveling with friends, I have learned not to wait for the perfect schedule. If there is somewhere I want to go, I try to make it happen, even if that means traveling on my own. Sometimes you simply need to make the plans and go.
Who inspires you? - My parents have always been an inspiration. They emphasized the importance of education and hard work, and growing up, attending college was always an expectation for my siblings and me, even though neither of my parents attended college. Their belief in the value of education helped shape who I am. I have learned from many outstanding high school and college instructors whose passion for teaching and commitment to students inspired me.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - One of the most meaningful lessons I learned during my Educational Specialist program was the story of the starfish. In the story, starfish has washed up on a beach. As one person throws them back into the ocean, someone asks why they bother since there are so many and they could never save them all. The response is simple: as another starfish is thrown back into the water, “It mattered to that one.” That story has stayed with me. In education, it is easy to focus on numbers, but real impact happens one student, one colleague and one interaction.
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - I don’t spend much time thinking about how I will be remembered. I would rather focus on doing the right thing, supporting others and making a positive difference each day. If I can help students, faculty, staff and colleagues be successful, then I feel I have spent my time doing something worth doing.
If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so?You can contact me at nriley@mccneb.edu or visit mccneb.edu/Biotech.

It’s not every 17-year-old’s goal to work in the funeral services industry, but Gisselle Garcia-Diaz’s first job at a funeral home in high school paved the way for her career as a funeral director. In June, she joined the team at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Cemetery and Mausoleum and became the first English-Spanish bi-lingual funeral director at the organization.

“Families experiencing a loss are going through a tough time. Finding someone you feel comfortable with is important. It is rewarding to be that person,” she said. Her skills and experience as a funeral director are key to her ability to help bring clarity and truth during their time of loss and subsequent grief journey.
Her ability to speak Spanish is also a great source of support for families. Garcia-Diaz has responded to calls seeking a Spanish speaker to help a family to navigate their loss, and worked with foreign consulates to facilitate the process of repatriating remains.
Garcia-Diaz earned an associate’s degree in liberal arts with an emphasis in science from MCC in Omaha before completing her funeral director’s degree from the Des Moines Area Community College of Mortuary Science.

Community is at the heart of everything they do at United Cerebral Palsy of Nebraska. While resources and programs are important, the lasting impact often comes from the relationships built along the way.

Through their programs, families find more than support—they find connection. Parents share experiences, offer encouragement and learn from one another. Individuals build friendships, gain confidence and discover they are part of a community that understands and celebrates them. These moments create opportunities for families to make memories together, strengthen bonds, and feel a sense of belonging that can be difficult to find elsewhere.
The same spirit of connection extends to our annual Hit the Links, Drive Against Disabilities golf event. More than a day on the course, the event brings together golfers, sponsors, volunteers and supporters who believe in creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Every conversation, partnership and contribution helps build a stronger, more inclusive community—one where families know they are supported and never walking their journey alone.

Midlands Community Foundation raised $62,000 at its 2026 golf tournament at Oak Hills Country Club on Monday, May 19. The tournament was sold out with 36 teams participating.

In addition to supporting MCF’s grants program, a portion of the tournament proceeds benefits special nonprofit initiatives in Cass and Sarpy counties each year. This year the Cass County Fair and Sarpy County Fair were selected as recipients. Funds will support improvements to the fairgrounds and facilities. Through the generous contributions of tournament sponsors and participants, including Double Eagle Sponsor National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs (NASDVA), the beneficiary organizations are the Cass County Agricultural Society and the Sarpy County Agricultural Society; the organizers of the respective county fairs.
The winners of MCF’s Annual Golf Tournament were Andy Cox, Jason Pfenning, Abby Kurmel, and Bryce Havlovic golfing for CharterWest Bank.
“We deeply appreciate the tremendous support shown for our golf tournament,” said Diane Knicky. “That enthusiasm demonstrates the confidence our community places in MCF’s ability to strengthen local organizations, such as county fairs, that honor the traditions of Cass and Sarpy counties while encouraging growth and opportunities for young people. Summer break means school is out, but for working families, the need for childcare and support continues.
Each summer, Completely KIDS serves hundreds of youth through engaging summer programming that keeps KIDS connected, entertained and active. Among those offerings is Camp Hero, a specialized program designed for children who benefit from a more supportive and individualized environment.

Created for youth navigating life transitions with higher support needs, including many on the autism spectrum, Camp Hero provides a structured summer experience focused on emotional wellness, confidence building and connection.
Completely KIDS launched Camp Hero in summer 2023 with just 10 participants. Now entering its fourth summer, the program has expanded to serve up to 24 youth currently enrolled in Completely KIDS after-school programs.
What sets Camp Hero apart is its tailored approach. While traditional summer programs may operate with staff-to-student ratios of 1:15, Camp Hero maintains a 1:3 ratio, ensuring each child gets individualized attention. The program also incorporates movement and sensory breaks and includes daily skills-based mental health groups that help youth identify emotions and strengthen selfregulation skills.
“Camp Hero reflects our commitment to meeting youth where they are because one size does not fit all,” said Lulu Rangel, LICSW, LIMHP, Clinical Director at Completely KIDS. “By creating a smaller, more responsive environment, we help youth build confidence and develop skills that extend beyond the summer.”
Camp Hero is one example of how Completely KIDS adapts programming to meet the diverse needs of youth and families so more children can continue growing and thriving all summer long. For more information, visit completelykids.org.

The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology have released the first clinical practice guideline for cardiovascular-kidneymetabolic (CKM) syndrome—an interconnected group of conditions that significantly increase the risk of heart disease, kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes.

Nearly 90% of U.S. adults have at least one CKM risk factor, including excess weight, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, elevated blood sugar or reduced kidney function. The new guideline introduces a four-stage framework to help clinicians assess risk and intervene earlier.
Stage 1 includes individuals with overweight, obesity or prediabetes. Stage 2 adds metabolic risk factors such as hypertension, abnormal lipids or kidney disease. Stage 3 identifies those with early, often asymptomatic cardiovascular disease or high predicted risk, while Stage 4 includes people with diagnosed cardiovascular conditions such as heart attack, stroke or heart failure. The guideline emphasizes early screening, coordinated care and prevention.
Risk assessment tools like the PREVENT equations now incorporate kidney and metabolic health to better estimate long-term cardiovascular risk. It also highlights the importance of addressing social factors such as food insecurity and housing instability.
Treatment recommendations focus on lifestyle changes—healthy eating, physical activity, weight management and control of blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol—supported by medications and, when appropriate, metabolic or bariatric surgery. Newer therapies, including GLP-1-based medications and SGLT2 inhibitors, are recommended for select patients.
Ultimately, the guideline underscores that these conditions are deeply connected—and that early action can prevent serious complications and improve long-term health outcomes
To read the full practice guideline, visit newsroom.heart.org/news/ first-ever-guideline-on-cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic-syndromeissued.

Autism Action Partnership (AAP) is excited to announce the Guys Group (G2), a new community and social group for dads and caretakers with loved ones impacted by autism.

The Guys Group was created to provide a welcoming space for dads, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, husbands, and other male caregivers to connect with others who share similar experiences. While many support opportunities exist for parents and caregivers, there are limited options specifically designed for men navigating the unique joys and challenges of supporting an autistic loved one.
The Guys Group aims to foster meaningful connections and cultivate a supportive network for men navigating the autism journey alongside their loved ones.
“The concept for the Guys Group came from a few local autism dads, who want to create a community where their male peers can connect. Autism Action Partnership is honored to help facilitate this initiative and help bring their vision to life,” said AAP President Justin Dougherty.

Let me help you tell your story.
The group will host monthly social gatherings and provide opportunities to connect through an online community. Meeting locations will vary based on member interests and opportunities throughout the Omaha metro area. Gatherings will primarily take place in the evenings on the fourth Thursday of each month.

It’s a milestone moment for any young person: Walking out of the DMV with a piece of paper saying you’re now a certified driver.

On May 16, Avenue Scholars made many of these moments possible at their DMV Day event. Here, Scholars had the opportunity to visit the DMV to test for and obtain their driver’s license, learner’s permit or state ID – with all costs covered. The event was made possible through a grant from the AAA Auto Club Group (ACG) Foundation, which supported the filing costs of every Scholar seeking an ID, permit or license, and, for many, the cost of driver’s education courses.
“Transportation is truly a pillar of our program – being able to get yourself to and from work is crucial in the professional world,” said Lindsay Decker, CEO of Avenue Scholars.
For at least one Scholar who attended DMV Day, that was especially true. Aiden, a rising junior at Bellevue East High School who left the event with his license, hopes to be a CDL driver one day.
“It’s kind of the open road – that freedom, I’d say,” he said.

The SAC Foundation supports initiatives throughout eastern Nebraska and western Iowa with a focus on military, youth, education and community development. Its annual golf event serves as one of the Foundation’s premier fundraising efforts, bringing together community partners and businesses.
“The success of this event is a testament to what can happen when our community comes together around a shared purpose,” said Keli Wragge, Board Chair of the SAC Foundation. “We are deeply grateful to our sponsors, golfers, volunteers, and donors whose support made this our most impactful tournament to date and will help strengthen the lives of veterans in our communities.”

Donations of $250 or more will be recognized on Project Harmony’s Be Someone Wall, honoring those who invest in safer futures for children.

In a surprising development that experts insist is “completely normal,” children throughout southwest Iowa continue growing, learning, and relying on caring adults to help them succeed. To meet this ongoing community need, Firefly is calling on local residents to become volunteers, donors and advocates for children and families.

For 35 years, Firefly has worked alongside families to provide literacy support, developmental screenings, public health services and early childhood programs that help children enter school ready to learn. Today, the organization is inviting the community to play a direct role in that mission.
Whether you’re willing to stuff envelopes, assemble children’s literacy kits, read with young learners, sponsor a program or make a financial gift, every contribution helps create brighter futures for local children.
“Strong communities don’t happen by accident,” said Kimberly Kolakowski, Executive Director of Firefly. “They happen when neighbors step forward to support one another. Every volunteer hour and every donation helps ensure children and families have the resources they need to thrive.”
Community members interested in joining Firefly’s Glow Squad can learn more about volunteer opportunities and ways to give by contacting Firefly or visiting its website at firefly.kids.
Lifetime Stone Restoration has the experience, the equipment and the talent to restore any home or business to look like new.
In business since 2008, Lifetime Stone Restoration can diamond refinish floors, counter tops, showers and any other materials made of granite, marble, terrazzo, or limestone to make them look new again. They also fix chips, cracks and dullness found in stone.
When they clean ceramic tile and grout, they can change the color of the grout without removing it, giving your space a clean and refreshed look for half the cost of replacing tile or flooring. When restoring showers, they remove soap and mildew and re-caulk bases and corners.
Because they are not a franchise, they can change their process to best fit whatever project they are working on. More than a janitorial company, their work on stone is done using natural restoration processes, versing just applying a wax.
Here’s what customers are saying about Lifetime Stone Restoration:
“Don brought my 60-year-old marble entryway back to life. We never realized it could look so great. Don was so knowledgeable and professional. He certainly takes pride in his work and I would definitely recommend Lifetime Stone Restoration.” – Cindy
“Don did a wonderful job on my granite kitchen counter tops. He cleaned, polished, sealed and even restored an area by my sink that was in bad shape. Don’s a true professional and did exactly what he promised. He was on time for both the estimate and when he came to do the job. I highly recommend Lifetime Stone Restoration–thanks Don!” – Meg
“Don did a fabulous job cleaning and resealing the tile in our home. The color match on the new caulking in the kitchen is excellent and the precision he used was outstanding. He is very professional from the first time you speak to him through the bidding and completion of the job. He had an assistant the day he came to our home so was able to finish the job quicker than he’d promised. I highly recommend him for the job he did in our home!” – Deb
“Don did a GREAT job of making the ugly, unevenly colored grout in our entryway look better than new. We were spared the expense, mess and inconvenience of jack-hammering out the old tile because he made it look so good. Very professional, arrived promptly, was courteous and kind. Couldn't be happier with the results.” – Laura

Nearly 400 United Way of the Midlands (UWM) volunteers will come together, July 28 - 31, to support local students by assembling nearly 5,000 Shine Bright kits at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs.

As the community gets ready to start a new school year, thousands of students lack access to essential hygiene items like soap, shampoo and dental products – impacting their health, academics and confidence. Each Shine Bright kit contains full-size personal care products that help students feel prepared, confident and ready to learn.
Shine Bright is a partnership between UWM, Omaha and Council Bluffs Public Schools, Papillion La Vista Schools, JAG Nebraska and other area organizations. School counselors identify kindergarten, sixth- and ninth-grade students who would benefit from additional support and distribute the kits directly to them. Kits will also be provided to JAG Nebraska students across the state.
“For many families, rising costs can make it difficult to afford even basic personal care items,” said Shawna Forsberg, president and CEO, UWM. “One of UWM’s strengths is connecting people who want to help with opportunities to serve. Shine Bright is a great example of how we make it easy for people to give back.”
Shine Bright 2026 is possible thanks to sponsors Election Systems & Software, Fiserv, Google, Google Fiber, Liberty Packaging, Mid-America Center, Pella, T-Mobile, Wellabe, Werner and WoodmenLife – along with community partners and volunteers who all come together to make a difference. If you’d like to become a sponsor or volunteer for this year’s event, go to UnitedWayMidlands. org/ShineBright.

The American Red Cross has an urgent need for donors. Donors of all blood types are needed to keep a strong supply of lifesaving blood products on hospital shelves into the summer. As summer heat ramps up, so do people’s plans, which could lead to postponed appointments or less opportunities to give - an especially troubling scenario at a time where the Red Cross has experienced an alarming drop in scheduled donations in recent weeks.
To donate, simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-7332767) or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the Red Cross is to become a volunteer blood donor ambassador at Red Cross blood drives. Blood donor ambassadors help greet, check in and thank blood donors to ensure they have a positive donation experience. Volunteers can also serve as transportation specialists, playing a vital role in ensuring lifesaving blood products are delivered to nearby hospitals. For more information and to apply for either position, visit redcross.org/volunteertoday.

key is selecting an experience that employees will genuinely enjoy and participate in.
Summer is an especially popular time for company retreats. Warmer weather creates opportunities for outdoor activities and provides a natural setting for employees to relax and recharge. Summer retreats can also serve as a valuable mid-year reset, giving organizations a chance to celebrate accomplishments, evaluate progress and establish goals for the remainder of the year.

Getting to know your team is essential to the success of any company. Planning a company retreat can be an effective way to strengthen relationships, improve communication and build a stronger workplace culture. Whether it’s a day of team-building activities, a volunteer project or a relaxed outing, stepping away from the office allows employees to connect in ways they may not during the workday.

There are many venues and activities throughout Omaha that can accommodate teams of all sizes and interests. Building relationships outside of daily work responsibilities helps develop trust, strengthen teamwork and create a more positive company culture—all of which can contribute to employee performance, engagement and motivation.
Investing in retreats and team outings can have a direct impact on employee satisfaction, communication, productivity and leadership development. The most successful retreats are tailored to the needs and personalities of the group they serve. Some teams may enjoy volunteering with a local nonprofit, while others may prefer outdoor recreation, friendly competition or problem-solving activities. The
For companies navigating a particularly busy season, a retreat can offer employees a well-earned break while helping reduce stress and prevent burnout. Taking time to reconnect as a team can help employees return to work feeling refreshed, motivated and focused.
Many venues and event providers offer planning assistance to simplify the process. From catering and equipment rentals to activity coordination and meeting space, experienced event professionals can help organizations create a memorable experience while staying within budget. With so many options available throughout Omaha, businesses can easily find a retreat setting that aligns with their goals and company culture.
Whether employees are sharing a meal, participating in activities or simply spending time together outside the office, retreats create opportunities for meaningful connections. The coworker known for spreadsheets may turn out to be the team’s best golfer, while the quiet employee from another department becomes the star of a team challenge. These shared experiences help build stronger relationships that often carry back into the workplace.
A connected team is a stronger team. By investing in opportunities for employees to learn more about one another, businesses can foster trust, improve collaboration and create a workplace culture that supports long-term success.

It can be hard to let go of a home when you need a change; maybe you’ve lived in the same house for years, you’ve gotten to know your neighbors or the area feels safe and comfortable. Letting go of community and memories to come is difficult. Here is the good news: you can get all the changes you need without having to go through the hassle of moving or finding a new neighborhood.
Residential remodeling is a simpler, cheaper option than a move that can still bring enhanced comfort, functionality and even style to your home. From revamping old stone floors and countertops to updating plumbing or electricity flow to adding a whole new room, there’s so much that can be done to spice up what’s already there.
Residential remodel goes beyond updating your home’s appearance it is about creating a space that better fits a homeowner’s lifestyle and needs. Whether it is a kitchen renovation, bathroom update or

even a home addition, remodeling projects continue to be popular investments for homeowners across the Omaha area.
Look no further than businesses in Omaha; with years of experience both appreciating homes and enhancing them, they provide many options for whatever future you may be looking for.
One way to make a home feel new again is to remodel kitchen cabinets and countertops. Look no further than Cabinet IQ

There are a few specific popular styles for kitchen cabinets and countertops that Cabinet IQ has noticed in recent years. For instance, wood stains are back and popular again. A lot of remodelers and homeowners are going with Walnut and white oak; Cabinet IQ notes that they are timeless and can be matched with a painted cabinet as an accent.
Worried about any confusion throughout the process? The remodeling process at Cabinet IQ is comprehensive and designed to keep their customers informed every step of the way. They guide each client through a detailed 14-step process, ensuring they always know what is happening with their project—from the initial phone call through final completion.
Communication is at the heart of everything they do. They pride themselves on providing an exceptional customer experience through clear communication, attention to detail and a commitment to doing what’s right for their clients.
Cabinet IQ believes that listening is the most important part of the process. By understanding their clients’ needs, wants, and goals, Cabinet IQ can help guide them through every decision with confidence.
Whether it’s layout, design, product selections, or functionality, their team is there to provide expertise and support every step of the way. Their goal is to ensure no detail is overlooked and no stone is left unturned, resulting in a finished space that feels fresh and exceeds expectations.
This is the current transition can you make it longer: Home maintenance and restoration is just as important as renovation when updating a home to better fit a homeowner’s vision.
Yet remodeling is not always about replacing existing materials. In many cases, homeowners can achieve a dramatic transformation by restoring and maintaining the features they already love.

Home maintenance and restoration are essential parts of keeping a home beautiful, functional and aligned with a homeowner’s evolving style and needs. Investing in these services can extend the life of existing surfaces while creating a refreshed look that complements any renovation.
Lifetime Stone Restoration is a locally owned company that specializes in restoring stone surfaces and bringing back the natural beauty already built into a home. With modern equipment and professional expertise, the team
restores stone floors, countertops, tile, grout and showers that have become worn over time.
The company is especially known for its work on stone floors and countertops. Even newer homes can experience scratches or damage, while older homes often show years of wear. After restoration, many homeowners are surprised at how new their surfaces look again.
Your fl ooring and countertops can set the tone for your home. Lifetime Stone Restoration explains that restoring stone has several advantages over replacing it. It is often more affordable, takes less time and allows homeowners to enjoy their space sooner. In many cases surfaces can be used right after the work is completed.
Restoration also helps preserve original materials that may be hard or impossible to replace. Some stone is no longer extracted and certain patterns or installations are unique to their time period. Restoring them keeps that original character while refreshing the look.
For homeowners dealing with worn or damaged stone, Lifetime Stone Restoration offers a simple, cost-effective way to refresh a home without replacing what is already there.
Every remodeling project is made up of countless details, from selecting finishes and upgrading fixtures to preserving and restoring the features homeowners already love. Yet one of the most overlooked aspects of a renovation is what happens after the work is done.
Construction dust, residue and heavy foot traffic can leave even the most beautiful remodel feeling unfinished. By investing in professional cleaning services, homeowners can ensure their newly updated spaces are not only visually stunning but also comfortable, healthy and ready to be enjoyed.
That is where New Start Cleaning becomes an essential part of the remodeling process.
They offer many cleaning services including residential, commercial, move in / move out, deep clean, construction, post construction, one time, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and after event cleaning. With that being said, New Start Cleaning is here to help you upkeep your renovated home or help you after construction and new finishes.

“Professional cleaning is the final step that helps bring a remodeling project to life,” Coco Chairez, owner of New Start Cleaning said. “Even the best renovation can be overshadowed by construction dust, debris and residue left behind.”
Professional cleaning post-construction is not something to underestimate, it enables homeowners to enjoy their remodeling project and let it come to life.
“Hiring a professional cleaning team helps protect your investment, improves indoor air quality, and ensures your newly remodeled space looks its absolute best from day one,” Chairez said.
The professionals of the city are ecstatic to help your vision come to life, all without having to go through the hassle of moving and completely deconstructing your home. Working with local businesses as great as the ones featured will ensure a smooth remodeling process for you and your family. With companies that stick with you through design till completion, homeowners can feel confident knowing they have trusted experts by their side every step of the way.
Their experience, dedication and commitment to customer satisfaction help take the stress out of remodeling and turn exciting ideas into reality. With help from local Omaha professionals, homeowners like you can confidently bring your visions to life while creating spaces that fit with your everyday life.
The businesses featured here continue to help Omaha residents improve their homes and make them fall in love with their homes, all over again. For big houses and small houses, old homes and new homes, large budgets or small budgets, there are plenty of options for a successful residential remodel this summer.
With creativity, expertise and a passion for quality craftsmanship, Omaha’s remodeling community is ready to help homeowners create spaces they will love for years to come.

This month Strictly Business is happy shed light on one of its core values, community involvement. We believe in the importance of supporting our neighbors and giving back to our community. We are proud to have a space that highlights the hard work put in by Omaha’s nonprofit organizations.
Many nonprofits need the support of Omaha’s community. People rely on the programs provided by nonprofit organizations and those who support them. Think about donating to the organizations near you. Even unused items lying around your home such as old towels, children’s toys, and office items can make a big impact. While not everyone can donate financially, there is always something to give. Nonprofit organizations succeed most when supporters pull together and use their different skills to make the program possible. If you can’t donate financially consider volunteering your time and skills for local organizations. Most nonprofits need help with simple tasks such as helping with event activities, office support, tutoring, and more. There is such a wide variety of nonprofit organizations that everyone can find one that they’re passionate about and would like to give back to. We are thankful to include several nonprofits in our magazine, each with a unique mission and an inspiring story to tell. Whether you are passionate about supporting children, animals, women, seniors, minority communities, underserved individuals, or those in need of healthcare, food, and clothing, there is a nonprofit dedicated to that mission and would to welcome your support in whatever way you choose to give.
When you support a nonprofit, it impacts far beyond one individual or program. It plays a part in creating a stronger and healthier community. It also encourages others to get involved and be generous in their own way. Even small acts of giving can make a bigger difference than they seem. When many in the community commit to giving back in small ways, it creates a meaningful and lasting impact. Supporting a nonprofit doesn’t only benefit the organization and people

it serves, it also has a meaningful impact on you personally, in more ways than you’d expect.
At Strictly Business we believe that giving back matters in order to strengthen our community. We are proud to highlight these incredible nonprofi t organizations in our magazine. They are making a huge difference in our local community and helping Omaha to thrive. By sharing their missions, we hope it encourages you to reach out to your local nonprofit organizations and offer a helping hand. The smallest act of kindness can have a huge impact on those around you. It is truly special when the community comes together to support one another. Everyone has something to bring and we are stronger together. Read on to learn about the nonprofi t organizations near you.

Avenue Scholars connects Omaha youth to high-paying, high-demand careers that are vital to the city’s future.

Our program focuses on young people who are interested in careers outside of the traditional four-year college pathway. We work with students who, due to additional financial, academic, or personal challenges, could benefit from extra support during the important transition period from high school to career entry.
Our students, who we proudly call our Scholars, begin the program during their junior year. While in school, they receive two years of classroom instruction from a dedicated Career Coach aimed at helping them select a stable, rewarding career path and develop the professional skills necessary to pursue it.
After graduation, Scholars transition into our Career Services program where our Coaches work to help them secure a full-time job that pays a livable wage and offers benefits. We encourage Scholars to enter career fields that are in high demand in the Omaha area, including healthcare, the skilled trades, and transportation/ automotive, among others.
To connect with our program, email Director of Communications Blake Ursch at bursch@avescholars.org or call (402) 991-5395. For more information, visit avescholars.org.
For 35 years, Firefly has been a beacon of hope for children and families across southwest Iowa, helping ensure every child has the opportunity to grow, learn and thrive from the very beginning of life.

The earliest years of a child’s life shape everything that follows. During this critical time, families often face challenges related to health, development, education, housing, food security and other basic needs. When families receive support early, children are more likely to enter school ready to learn, develop healthy relationships and reach their full potential.
That is where Firefly steps in.
Through early childhood education, home visiting, public health services, family support programs and community partnerships, Firefly walks alongside families during some of life’s most important moments. We help parents build confidence, connect families to critical resources, support healthy child development and create pathways to opportunity.
The impact reaches far beyond the children and families we serve. Strong early childhood experiences contribute to healthier communities, stronger schools and a brighter future for generations to come. Every family is empowered, every child supported and every barrier removed creates lasting change.
At Firefly, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to shine and every family deserves someone in their corner. Our work is made possible by individuals, businesses, foundations, volunteers and community partners who believe that investing in children today creates a stronger tomorrow.
Together, we can ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive and every family has the support they need to succeed. More information can be found at firefly.kids.
