When Brian Kruse moved from the funeral industry to public service as the Douglas County Election Commissioner, little did he suspect that ten years later, he would return to it. Now, as the new executive director of Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Cemetery and Mausoleum, Kruse finds himself at one of the area’s oldest cemeteries that continues to stay in touch with the needs of the community.
“The positions I’ve held throughout my career allow me to meet people where they are and understand what’s important to them,” Kruse said. “At Forest Lawn, I am part of an entire team who shares a commitment to the people and families we serve.”
This commitment to serving the needs of area families has been at the heart of Forest Lawn since its beginning when it was established in 1885, early in Omaha’s history. It became the final resting place to families that built the city – from all backgrounds and all walks of life.
Today, Forest Lawn includes its nationally recognized cemetery, along with a funeral home and modern mausoleum, on the same campus. It allows them to provide all the options people are looking for in one place.

Visitors are welcome to stop at the funeral home and meet one of the funeral directors and family service counselors who are happy to visit with folks and offer a tour.
Kruse, who earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science before attending the mortuary program at the Kansas City Kansas Community College, finds himself in an ideal spot at Forest Lawn.
“Forest Lawn has been around for over 140 years. My role here allows me to combine my love of history with my commitment to serving people,” Kruse said. “It’s a special place that celebrates past history and at the same time makes us part of the future.”

The FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Nebraska Championship brought together 22 qualifying teams and 125 students throughout the state (ages 12-18) to the Metropolitan Community College (MCC) Center for Advanced and Emerging Technology on the Fort Omaha Campus for a day of team-based robotics competition. FTC events like the Nebraska Championship put STEM learning on display in a sports-like format, with student designed and controlled robots maneuvering a playing field in timed, headto-head competitions.


Community leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, nonprofits and residents will gather May 8 for the 19th annual Rebuilding the Village Conference at the Hilton Omaha, an event focused on strengthening communities through collaboration, innovation and economic empowerment. Hosted by the Empowerment Network, the conference brings together individuals and organizations to build stronger neighborhoods and economic opportunity. The event serves as a national convening for leaders committed to creating thriving communities.

In addition to direct competition, teams were judged for their technical design, engineering, programming, documentation, communication and professionalism. Astra Machina, an Omaha Creighton Prep team, emerged as the 2026 FTC Nebraska Champion. Rebel Robotics from Norfolk, won the Inspire Award, described as the top honor of FTC competition by the organization.
Both teams will represent Nebraska at the FIRST Championship in Houston April 29-May 2, a world competition that features more than 19,000 students from 60-plus countries. Both teams qualified for the FIRST Championship last year.
“By serving as the state’s FTC program delivery organization, MCC is ensuring students statewide have meaningful access to STEM experiences that connect directly to workforce needs and strengthen Nebraska’s long-term talent pipeline,” said Tammy Green, MCC executive director of Statewide Workforce Education Initiatives.
“Robotics education isn’t just building robots — it’s building Nebraska’s future workforce by igniting creativity, coding skills, and career pathways for every student,” Green said. “At MCC, we believe access to high-quality STEM opportunities should not depend on a student’s zip code. From rural to urban communities across Nebraska, expanding robotics programming means expanding access to engineering, design, programming and advanced manufacturing pathways that lead to real careers.”

Two students will see their artwork travel aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) Mission 21, coordinated by Metropolitan Community College (MCC).
Westview High School senior Ayreonna Toney-Primes and Swanson Elementary School fourth grade student Bhavya Bhooma designed the winning mission patches, which will take flight this summer alongside a low-gravity experiment created by a team of three MCC students.

Students attending MCC, along with students in grades K-12 across the four counties MCC serves (Douglas, Dodge, Sarpy and Washington) submitted 581 designs for consideration. The inclusion of a patch design competition for the SSEP is to provide a STEAM learning opportunity for communities with schools selected to participate in Mission 21. Kally Malcom-Bjorklund, MCC associate dean of Creative Arts and Design, highlighted the role of the arts aiding in understanding complex topics.
The mission is made possible through a partnership with the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education and ISS commercial services provider Rhodium Scientific.

Based on the number of weekly notarized petitions EPIC Option has received to date, projections indicate that the goal of 160,000 signatures by July 1, 2026, shall not be met.
As a result, volunteer signature collection for the 2026 ballot initiative has paused. This decision does not end EPIC Option; it marks a reset and a stronger path forward with the launch of EPIC Option 3.0. EPIC Option 3.0 remains fully committed to eliminating Nebraska’s property, income, and inheritance taxes.

The third time is a charm. The EPIC Option 3.0 team is regrouping for a restart for 2028. Because no ballot initiative has successfully gathered enough signatures using only volunteers since 1966, the EPIC Option 3.0 team will be using paid circulators.
Our immediate goal is to raise $1.86 million to pay circulators to collect 160,000 signatures. If just 8,000 Nebraskans donate $250, Nebraska’s Second House will raise $2 million dollars. This is a small investment compared to the annual tax burden that will be eliminated.
Together, Nebraskans can make EPIC Option 3.0 a reality.

In conjunction with Manufacturing Day at the Capitol, the collaborators announced a partnership with Nebraska State Chamber Foundation, the state’s six community colleges, and the Department of Labor, to deliver modular, employer-based training to students or workers to earn Level 1 Manufacturing Certifications.

The program establishes a stackable entry-level Nebraska Manufacturing Alliance Credential that verifies manufacturing skills and creates a consistent industry-recognized standard. It establishes community colleges as registered apprenticeship hubs in addition to elping developing curriculum for the credential, hire instructional designers, instructors, and coaches; helps purchase equipment and support student success.In addition to taking the courses tuition-free, students receive stipends for participating in them. The credential can be completed in 6-8 weeks by attending one class per week. Additionally, students can go on to earn Level 2 or 3 manufacturing certificates.
Students participating can be youth or high-school-aged learners, adults studying for their GED, or high school graduates and industry professionals wanting to “upskill.” Upskilling can earn workers higher wages and promotion.
Funding for the $7 million project is from the state’s Workforce Development Program Cash Fund.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced professionally has been stepping back into the workforce while balancing life at home with four kids. I think many parents can relate to that feeling of wondering if you still “have it” after time away, while also trying to manage school schedules, sick days, and the everyday unpredictability of family life.
Tell us a little about your family. - I am a mom to four beautiful children. They are my pride and joy and it’s been extremely enjoyable to build our little life. They keep me grounded, humble and laughing daily.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Anything outside; walking, hiking, swimming, or laying in a hammock with a good book. Everything is better outdoors. Sunshine and fresh air reset everything for me.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I can carry an alarming number of grocery bags in one trip. It’s a badge of honor at this point.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Take the next right step.” You don’t have to have everything figured out—you just have to keep moving forward.
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - One word seems unrealistic. How about joy-filled and resilient.
If you had a theme song, what would it be? - Oh that one is tough. I think I would pick ‘Baby Steps’ by Olivia Dean. It’s about steady growth and giving yourself grace while you build something meaningful. That really reflects how I approach both my career and motherhood.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? - The ability to freeze time—just for a little while. I’d use it to soak up moments with my kids and maybe get a few extra things checked off my to-do list.
Which talent would you most like to have? - The ability to function at full capacity on five hours of sleep without anyone being able to tell.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - If I could choose any other profession, I would probably pursue something in the field of psychology or mental health. What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - Being laid off from a previous job. It was unexpected, but it pushed me to reassess my goals and look for new opportunities. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I enjoy spending time outdoors. Fishing, hiking, camping, and taking my son to the different parks around town.

I almost attained my private pilots license, but it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for at the time. Instead I learned how to fly powered paragliders as that’s closer to my childhood dream of jumping off retaining walls with bed sheets.
Who inspires you? - My coworkers inspire me. As a team, we’ve faced and solved many challenges over the years while providing the best possible service. Seeing how everyone steps up, supports each other, and stays focused on solutions motivates me to bring that same level of effort and accountability.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - My favorite quote is from Leonardo Da Vinci, “Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - If I could choose another profession, I would be a meteorologist. I like how data and patterns are used to predict and respond to changing conditions. Very similar to what I do in IT— identifying issues early and adapting as new information comes in.
What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - Harry Potter series and look forward to sharing them with my son.

- I always feel the biggest challenge is engaging others in your excitement, whether that is a mission, a program, a product, etc. As a coach, I do that every day.
What has been your most important achievement professionally?
- In 2016, I had an opportunity to help the Jewish Community Center restructure and redesign their fitness center. Another achievement was the first annual Omaha ActionNATION Conference. It was so rewarding to see the faces in the crowd.
Tell us a little about your family. - My husband and I grew up in IA, and are forever Hawkeye fans, but we’ve been in Omaha for 25 years. We have 4 kids, our oldest is in college, and the youngest is in 1st grade, and then we have 2 dogs.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?
- When my kids came along, I wanted life to be different. I wanted to pour into my community and support my family financially, but I also wanted to spend as much time as I could being a mom.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I have coaching certifications in health & wellness, nutrition, life, and business. I am a certified personal trainer, group exercise instructor, Vinyasa yoga instructor, and a biomechanics certification.
Who inspires you? - My parents. They managed to have a kid in high school, stay married for going on 47 years, raise 3 kids, and my dad is a business owner.
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Genuine. In this day and age, it’s often hard to see the real person through the social media show. I try to show up as me all the time. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with? - I am currently the VP of the board for the Millard Business Association and I’m on the advisory committee for Heartland Hope Mission.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - One of my most meaningful professional achievements was recently graduating from the Nebraska State Chamber’s Leadership Nebraska program. It was an incredibly rewarding and impactful experience.
Tell us a little about your family. - My husband, Benjamin, and I have two daughters, Cate (10) and Claire (5), along with our black pug, Ferguson.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - My ideal day off is spent with my family at one of the Disney parks. There’s nothing better than a day immersed in that experience together. Also, there are few things better than a Disney churro.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Anything worth doing is worth doing well.”
If you had a theme song, what would it be? - Theme song is probably “Invisible String” by Taylor Swift. For more of an entrance song, I think it would be “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers. I tend to like music that’s reflective.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - If I were to choose another profession, it would likely be in the performing arts, specifically arts advocacy or management. I have a deep appreciation for both visual and performing arts. High quality arts experiences are incredibly important to me because they inspire, connect, and bring communities together.
If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? - I’d choose Melinda French Gates. She’s demonstrated thoughtful, value driven leadership while navigating global impact work and raising children in an increasingly complex world. Tell us a little about your business. - I’m a professional brand and lifestyle photographer, helping entrepreneurs and small businesses showcase their story through authentic, polished imagery. From headshots to full brand sessions, I create photos that not only look beautiful but also work strategically across websites, social media, and marketing materials. When I’m not working with business clients, I love helping families and couples capture milestone memories. My goal is to make clients feel confident, celebrate their personality, and connect with their audience.
How did you get started in the business? - I’ve been shooting professionally for over 10 years. I niched into commercial/brand photography after years of working closely with executives and business owners, helping them present them professionally. I realized I could combine my eye for detail, love of storytelling and passion for helping people feel confident in front of the camera, and that’s how my photography business was born.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - The biggest challenge I face is that many people don’t feel comfortable in front of the camera. Most clients haven’t had professional photos taken, and if they have, the experience wasn’t what they hoped. It can feel intimidating and awkward. I’ve made it my specialty to guide them through the process, helping them feel relaxed, confident, and authentic. This is what I’m known for…turning what can feel awkward into an empowering and enjoyable experience that produces images clients truly love.
What has been your most important achievement professionally?
- My most important professional achievement has been taking the leap to quit my day job and pursue photography full-time. It gave me the freedom to fully focus on helping clients tell their stories. It’s also allowed me to be more present in the community, meet incredible people, and celebrate their milestones through photography. On top of that, being voted a Top 5 Best Photographer in Lincoln’s Choice Awards two years in a row has been an incredible honor and a reminder that this leap was the right decision.
Tell us a little about your family. - I am a wife and mom with two toddlers, two adult step-kiddos and one angel baby. My family and my faith are the most important things in my life.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?
- One of the biggest turning points in my life happened in my 20s when I was given an unexpected opportunity to support the founder and CEO of a financial firm in Kansas City. Working closely with a successful businessman and entrepreneur gave me a front-row seat to how a company grows and operates. I learned so much from that experience, and it truly changed the trajectory of my life and career.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Done is better than perfect.” It’s a simple reminder that progress matters more than perfection. That mindset has helped me take chances, keep moving forward, and grow both personally and professionally.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? - Time travel. So many time periods I would go back to. I don’t think I’d go forward though.

How did you get started in the business? - Banking has always intrigued me. While I was in college, I happened to see a sign at my local branch that they were hiring. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - I had the rare opportunity to help grow a bank in a new market. This allowed me to contribute across nearly every area, from operations and strategic planning to building processes, developing high performing teams in both retail and treasury management.
Tell us a little about your family. - I’m outnumbered at home, but I love being the only female and wouldn’t change it for the world. My husband, Jared and I do our best to keep up with the fun created by our boys, Cole (5), Cooper (2), and our dog, Chip.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?When I got married and started a family, I realized just how important balance truly is. My identity shifted, from being immersed in work and philanthropic commitments to prioritizing family. At first, finding that balance was challenging, but with the support of my family and friends, I discovered that I don’t have to choose one path over another.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - On my days off, I focus on recharging, whether that’s a quick round of golf, a good audiobook, or catching up with a friend. A little reset helps me return with fresh energy and perspective.

After decades of steady leadership and commitment, Lincoln Federal Savings Bank announces the retirement of two longstanding board members: Rich Bredenkamp and J. Michael Rierden. Together, they represent more than 100 years of combined experience in banking, law, and community development.

Rich Bredenkamp’s banking career spans 54 years, including 35 years with Lincoln Federal. Serving as Senior Vice President of Administration and later as a member of the Board of Directors, Rich was a trusted leader through decades of growth and change.
A graduate of Kearney State College (now the University of Nebraska at Kearney), Rich built his career on a simple belief: banking is about people.
“We come in every day and the people that we take care of give you an education every day,” he reflected.
Known for his loyalty, work ethic, and technical skill, Rich valued the relationships he built with employees and customers alike. He often credited his mentor Jerry Maddox for teaching him the fundamentals of the banking business.
His advice for the next generation is straightforward: “Stick to the knitting. The business is basic. Stick to the basics and continue to provide service and support. The big picture takes care of itself.”

J. Michael Rierden served on Lincoln Federal’s Board for 53 years, including time as Chairman. A graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Law, Mike built a distinguished career as a real estate attorney specializing in contracts, deeds, title work, estate planning, and land use planning.
His experience translated naturally to one of the Bank’s unique specialties - lot sales and land development. With his great expertise in title examinations and land history, Mike provided thoughtful guidance that supported positive growth and community development.
Throughout his legal career, he worked closely with planning committees, city councils and county boards to ensure projects were well-planned and beneficial to the communities they served. He takes great pride in knowing that the decisions he played a part in helped our banking communities grow into the cities they are today.
His advice for the next generation:

On Feb. 14 at the Holland Performing Arts Center’s Scott Hall, Hero’s Encore graduated its inaugural cohort of 10 Veterans and First Responders before more than 150 attendees. The event was presented by WoodmenLife, with executive sponsorship from Bellevue University and Corwin Toyota of Bellevue, and co-hosted with Omaha Performing Arts.

The organization operates a structured, nine-month, performancebased development platform that moves participants from foundational instruction to public stage performance. The first cohort produced seven original songs and concluded with a live graduation event.
Graduates transition into the Encore Artist Development Program, where they serve as peer instructors and community performers, extending impact beyond the initial cohort.
In 2026, Hero’s Encore will operate two cohorts of 20 participants, with a goal of serving 40 Heroes annually. The direct program investment is approximately $1,250 per Hero, fully underwritten through corporate and community partnerships so there is no cost to participating Heroes.

Hearts United for Animals (HUA), a Smithsonian Award–winning, state-ofthe-art no-kill shelter and sanctuary, continues its mission of relieving the suffering of domestic animals through rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption.

Over the years, HUA has rescued more than 28,000 dogs from puppy mills, provided low-cost spay and neuter services for over 25,000 pets, and placed thousands of cats and dogs into loving homes across the country. The organization also provides temporary housing for pets of families fleeing domestic violence and offers its Proud Pets Program, which provides free veterinary care for the beloved pets of previously homeless veterans.
HUA responded to an urgent situation involving dozens of indoor cats abandoned at a carwash in Nebraska City following a severe hoarding case. The frightened cats, unfamiliar with the outdoors, were at serious risk.
Despite no additional space, HUA caregivers quickly stepped in to safely capture and care for the animals. Two cats gave birth after arriving at the shelter, and all have since received full veterinary care. Today, the cats and kittens are healthy, safe, and many have already been adopted into loving homes.

The Great Plains Black History Museum is proud to announce its 50th Anniversary Luncheon Celebration and Hall of Fame Recognition, a landmark event honoring five decades of preserving, uplifting, and sharing Black history across the region.

Set for Friday, June 19, from noon to 2 p.m. at The Venue, 2120 N. 30th Street, the celebration will bring together community members, supporters, and history-makers for an afternoon of reflection, recognition, and inspiration. As part of the Museum’s 50th Anniversary, the GPBHM Hall of Fame Ceremony will recognize 50 extraordinary leaders whose vision, courage, and contributions helped shape the cultural, civic, and historical landscape of the Great Plains. “This anniversary celebration is a moment to pause and recognize the people whose leadership, sacrifice, talent, and service helped shape the story of our communities,” said Pastor Portia Cavitt, Great Plains Black History Board President. “The Hall of Fame recognition is a tribute to those whose legacies deserve to be remembered, celebrated, and carried forward.”

Midlands Community Foundation (MCF) is pleased to announce that 102 of the 190 charitable funds under its non-profit umbrella took advantage of MCF’s Matching Charitable Program. The program, sponsored by MCF, raised more than $1.68 million from Giving Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025, through Jan. 5, 2026, with $637,219 qualifying for matching funds from MCF.

Under the Matching Charitable Program, MCF provided matching funds for NEW contributions made to existing and newly created Affiliated General, Designated, Donor Advised, Field of Interest and Scholarship Funds. Matching donations were made on a dollar-fordollar basis up to a limit of $5,000 per individual donor, and subject to a maximum of $100,000 of matching dollars being available for all Funds. Because more than $100,000 was contributed to all Funds, the matching dollars were pro-rated among such donors based on the total contributions made.
“Every year, the Match Program serves as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we collaborate,” said Diane Knicky, MCF Executive Director. “We’re proud to make this opportunity available to our more than 190 charitable funds, and we’re continually inspired by what they’re able to achieve through it. Young people can come into businesses that display a Safe Place sign in their window (think: QuikTrip and the YMCA), receive food and drink, and wait for a volunteer from a Safe Place agency partner to connect them with professional help or a place to stay until their situation is resolved.
As a Safe Place representative for the Omaha metro, YES brings youth in crisis to their own safe place in the Housing Program. There, young people can find warm meals, hot showers, and supportive case managers to help them work through crises. Meanwhile, they tirelessly work to make Omaha a safer community by recruiting more Safe Place sites and ensuring existing locations have proper signage and training.

Alejandra Wells, founder of Hiya, has been selected to present at the 2026 iCAN Summit, hosted by the International Children’s Advisory Network (iCAN), an international nonprofit that empowers youth to share their voices in healthcare, research, and innovation. Wednesday, April 1, marks the start of Child Abuse Awareness Month. Child abuse does not discriminate. It spans all racial, gender, socioeconomic and demographic boundaries. In 2025, Project Harmony provided services to over 8,000 children within the community through their response and prevention programs. Of these cases, 52% were sexual abuse, 15% neglect, 11% physical abuse and 6% witness to violence.
Over 17,000 pinwheels are spinning all across the Metro Area throughout the month of April as part of Project Harmony’s Pinwheels for Prevention® campaign to raise awareness of this life-threatening issue. Completely KIDS on March 18 marked a major milestone with the groundbreaking of the new Henry Davis Center and the reimagined Cindy Leiferman Nature Explore Classroom.

Held at 2448 St. Mary’s Avenue, the invitation-only ceremony brought together donors, volunteers, community partners, and city leaders to commemorate the organization’s next phase of growth.
The Henry Davis Center will feature eight early childhood classrooms serving children ages 5 and under, expanding access to high-quality early learning. The top floor of the facility will also include dedicated spaces for group and individual therapy, introducing additional evidence-based modalities such as music therapy and play therapy.
The reimagined Cindy Leiferman Nature Explore Classroom will enhance the existing outdoor learning environment, updating dedicated spaces for exploration, creativity, and hands-on discovery.
This expansion will increase Completely KIDS’ total annual services from just over 40,000 in 2025 to more than 50,000, equipping families with education and mental health tools for generational success. Through innovative, evidence-based programming and community building, the organization aims to create lasting change for Omaha KIDS and families.

According to the American Heart Association, 9 in 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of the hospital die, and more than half don’t receive bystander CPR. CPR can double or triple a person’s chance of survival. To help improve cardiac arrest outcomes in Omaha, Chad and Jisella Brough of CQuence Health Group, will chair the 2026 Greater Omaha Heart and Stroke Walk.

Heart Walk is the largest communityfacing initiative of the American Heart Association. Through fundraising, community education and corporate engagement, Heart Walk aims to make CPR education and training more accessible, fund vital research and drive equitable health for all. Under the Broughs’ leadership, top executives in Omaha will work to recruit other organizations to join the local Heart Walk campaign and help build a community of lifesavers.
According to the Heart Association’s 2024 CPR Perceptions Survey, 39% of people—or approximately 103 million U.S. adults—now feel “extremely confident” or “very confident” they could correctly perform CPR, up from 33% in 2021. That’s roughly 17.7 million more adults who are highly confident in their ability to conduct CPR, yet 61% still lack high confidence to act in a cardiac emergency.

“Everything is Connected” is the guiding theme of Vision Maker Media’s yearlong film festival, capturing what has defined Indigenous storytelling for generations: the enduring relationships between land, sky, environment, and people. Keep Nebraska Beautiful (KNB) was delighted to attend their national organization, Keep America Beautiful’s annual KAB Summit in New Orleans, Louisiana on Feb. 25 through the 28 for days of learning, networking, and being inspired by the work being done across the nation in communities large and small. This annual gathering brings together over 500 affiliates from across the country to share ideas, undergo training, and celebrate achievements in community sustainability.
During the conference, KNB participated in affiliate training sessions designed to strengthen their programs and operations. They also had the opportunity to speak with fellow affiliates and hear their stories as well as build relationships of mutual support. Autism Action Partnership will host a celebration of World Autism Day on April 4, 2026, from noon to 2 p.m. at Omaha’s Gene Leahy Mall at The RiverFront. The celebration is free and open to the public.

Cops and Bobbers, a beloved summertime tradition where the Omaha Police Officers Association Foundation partners with the Omaha Police Northeast Precinct, will return on Sunday, July 12. The annual event invites youth ages 8 to 15 to spend an afternoon fishing at Benson Lagoon, creating meaningful opportunities for connection between young people and local law enforcement.

More than just a day of fishing, Cops and Bobbers is designed to strengthen community bonds in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Omaha Police Officers spend one on one time with participating children teaching fishing basics, sharing stories, answering questions, and simply enjoying unstructured time outdoors. These small moments of encouragement and conversation often become the foundation for trust and understanding that lasts far beyond the event itself.
Organizers expect to welcome approximately 150 children this summer. Each participant will receive a fishing pole, tackle box, bait, bobbers, weights, hooks, a water bottle, and outdoor essentials such as sunscreen and bug spray. A meal will also be provided. At the end of the afternoon, every child will head home with new gear, new memories, and a strengthened connection to their community.

No More Empty Pots recently participated in the Bellevue EmPOWER Youth Summit, where CEO Talia McGill led a breakout session designed to help teens navigate life’s pressures while staying grounded in their goals and values.

McGill’s session, “Finding Your Balance: Goals, Growth, and Showing Up for Yourself & Others,” focused on helping students explore balance, self-advocacy, and peer support while reflecting on the expectations they face in school, friendships, and daily life. The interactive presentation encouraged participants to move away from perfectionism and instead focus on personal growth and self-awareness.
Throughout the session, teens engaged in guided discussions, movement-based activities, and real-life scenarios that allowed them to practice speaking up for themselves, identifying their personal motivations, and learning how to support friends who may be experiencing challenges.
Participants also explored how understanding their values and long-term goals can help them make healthier decisions in school, relationships, and everyday life.
The breakout session aligned with the summit’s mission to empower young people with practical tools they can apply immediately as they grow into confident leaders within their communities.

Child Saving Institute (CSI) and Project Harmony are partnering this April for Child Abuse Awareness Month through the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign, calling attention to the urgent need for child abuse prevention in Nebraska and Iowa.

Nationally, one in ten children will be abused before turning 18. This reality is reflected locally, making awareness, education and prevention essential.
Mandy Suing, community engagement coordinator at Project Harmony, said that collaboration strengthens prevention efforts.
“Partnering with CSI during Child Abuse Awareness Month amplifies the message that protecting children takes all of us,” Suing said. “When organizations stand together, we create more opportunities to educate the public, empower families and encourage conversations that can ultimately prevent abuse before it happens.”

Businesses across eastern Nebraska are preparing for the 2026 Lincoln and Omaha Corporate Games, with companies continuing to register teams for the fall programs that promote workplace wellness, friendly competition, and community engagement.

Hosted by the Nebraska Sports Council, the Corporate Games provide organizations an opportunity to bring employees together outside of the workplace through a wide range of recreational and competitive events. NeighborGood announced it has received $35,000 from Google to significantly upgrade its technology infrastructure. This vital funding will support Phase 1 of NeighborGood’s technology plan, ensuring the organization can meet the dramatically increasing demand for services and better connect Sarpy County residents with essential digital resources. Lily Haven continues to build meaningful partnerships across the community as Executive Director Sarina Thoendel meets with local businesses and organizations to raise awareness and strengthen support for survivors of human trafficking.

Through a series of presentations and conversations with business leaders, Thoendel is helping organizations better understand the realities of trafficking while encouraging companies to become part of the solution. These discussions focus on separating common myths from reality, recognizing how trafficking can impact communities, and identifying practical ways businesses can support prevention, awareness, and survivor recovery.
The outreach effort also provides an opportunity to share Lily Haven’s progress toward opening a safe residential home for teen girls who have experienced trafficking. The future home will offer a supportive, trauma-informed environment where residents can rebuild stability through education, life-skills development, and long-term support.

This month, Avenue Scholars will welcome nearly 400 Omaha high school students to its innovative career development program. Every spring, the Omaha nonprofit hosts a New Scholar Celebration to admit its newest cohort of Scholars.

Currently high school sophomores, these students will officially begin the program in the fall of their junior year. As part of the program, these new Scholars will begin receiving training and education in the classroom from dedicated Career Coaches embedded at their high schools. These Coaches, who also provide support and resources outside the classroom, will work closely with Scholars for the remainder of their time in high school, helping them develop a clear and actionable long-term career plan.
After graduation, Scholars transition into Avenue Scholars’ Career Services program, which provides them with additional support as they pursue their chosen career pathway. The program ultimately aims to guide Scholars into sustainable, high-demand careers that provide a living wage and benefits.

The questions we ask shape our community stories, and those stories shape our community’s success. For the last 30 years, Nebraska Community Foundation has been working to change the questions we ask about our hometowns.

Over the past five years, NCF has surveyed more than 4,000 high school-age students in 43 Greater Nebraska school districts. Here are a few highlights: Three-fourths reported no negative stigma with returning to or staying in the area they live now. 76% feel connected to their hometown. 59% said they are somewhat or extremely likely to live in the area they live now as an adult. When asked to rank qualities of their ideal community, safety, good schools, and proximity to family consistently top the list.
One of the most powerful questions we can ask young people is, “How do you want to play a role in your hometown?”
For many young Nebraskans, NCF’s Hometown Internships are helping provide an answer. Nebraska Community Foundation launched the program in 2019 to create an experience that brings young adults back home to see their communities through a different lens.
NCF has expanded and refined the program’s curriculum. Interns now participate in Operation Discovery, an educational component that encourages them to explore strategies grounded in mapping community assets and leading important conversations.
These experiences are having meaningful impacts on both the young adults and their local mentors, helping strengthen relationships, improve community narrative, and encourage investment of time, talent, and treasure in hometowns. Young adults are not just discovering their communities—they are learning that they may want to come home someday. Some have already found jobs, joined local organizations and purchased homes.
