by Ed Walsh SGN Contributing Writer While Seattle celebrates Pride this weekend, Mexico’s most popular gay beach destination, Puerto Vallarta, took to the streets just before the Memorial Day Weekend. Memorial Day is not a holiday in Mexico but the days around the holiday were selected with an eye to bringing more people to the tourist-dependent town during a traditionally slow time of year. Organizers estimate that over 7,000 people came out to cheer on Vallarta Pride’s 60 floats on Wednesday, May 24. For the first time in Vallarta Pride’s fiveyear history, the parade was attended by the city’s mayor and his wife and was celebrated with a block party. Vallarta Pride was celebrated for a week with various events through the Memorial Day Weekend.
Aside from Pride, one of the city’s most popular gay events is the White Party Puerto Vallarta (formerly Latin Fever), a circuit party geared toward gay men that is held every Thanksgiving weekend hosted in various venues throughout the city. Another gay-popular event is Carnival PV. It was started by the gay community years before the first Pride parade and is held on the traditional Mardi Gras day, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. For the uninitiated, Puerto Vallarta has a gay beach, gay neighborhood, gay hotels, a bounty of gay bars and nightclubs, and three gay-focused cruises. The city’s LGBT evolution first began in the early 1990s and is showing no signs of slowing down. Puerto Vallarta is in the center of Banderas Bay, on Mexico’s west coast, a little over six hours on connecting flights from SeaTac and about a 4.5-hour drive to Gua-

dalajara, Mexico’s second largest city. By the way, that drive time will be shortened to about 2.5 hours with the opening of a new highway between the two cities that is expected to open next year. Gay icon Elizabeth Taylor probably had more to do with Puerto Vallarta’s progression from a sleepy fishing village to tourist destination than any other person. She engaged in a scandalous affair with Richard Burton during the filming of Night of the Iguana in 1963. The international press flocked to Puerto Vallarta to capture every second of the couple’s romance while each was married to other people. Taylor wasn’t in the movie but stayed with Burton in Puerto Vallarta while the movie was filmed in nearby Mismaloya. Burton carried on with Taylor in a couple of homes on the hill overlooking the city’s landmark crown-topped church in the
center of downtown Puerto Vallarta. A socalled love bridge still joins the two homes, which allowed the couple to go back and forth without having to walk across the street. The gayest part of Puerto Vallarta barely existed in the early ’60s. It is Zona Romantica or the Romantic Zone, an area just south of downtown, just over the Cuale River. Some people also call it the South Side or Old Town, the latter being a misnomer since downtown is much older. Where to stay The luxurious LGBT resort, Casa Cupula, is one of the finest boutique hotels in Mexico. It includes the wonderful Taste Restaurant, a well-appointed gym, a pool and two hot tubs. Seattle Chamber Music Society’s 2017 Summer Festival Family Concert – The Emperor’s New Clothes Based on the Hans Christian Andersen tale, this fun filled, interactive concert is a perfect introduction for children ages 5-10. Two very busy musicians will demonstrate a whole range of percussive instruments on Saturday, July 23 at 11am. Prior to the concert there will be a free musical instrument “petting zoo” provided by Music Center of the Northwest. Seattle Chamber Music Society (SCMS) is pleased to present their 2017 Summer Festival. This year’s 12-concert series kicks off on Monday, July 3, and runs through Saturday, July 29. Each year the concert series is programmed by internationally renowned violinist, Grammy Award winner, and SCMS Artistic Director, James Ehnes, and takes place at the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall. The Summer Festival offers 12 unique concerts over four weeks with each concert featuring a free Pre-Concert Recital. Forty-six acclaimed musicians are featured, including internationally renowned soloists, principals with major US orchestras, and top prize-winners. Complete programming and artist roster can be found at: www.seattlechambermusic.org/concerts Highlight of SCMS’s 2017 Summer Festival include: • A “musical postcard” series featuring one country during each of the four weeks to deeply explore a specific countries musical history. On July 5, we will take a journey to Russia with music by Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Tchaikovsky. Bastille Day, July 14, explores the music of France with pieces by Debussy, Ravel, Bizet, and Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals. The third week visits the region known as Bohemia with selections by Janáček, Smetana, and Dvořák on July 21. And to wrap up our series at Benaroya Hall on July 28, we visit Vienna, including masterpieces by Schubert, Brahms, and Schoenberg, featuring his lush, Romantic work Verklärte Nacht. • Featured works for woodwinds, including Stravinsky’s L’histoire du Soldat Suite (7/3), Barber’s Summer Music (7/12), Kernis’ Trio in Red, and Brahms’ Clarinet Trio (7/28). • Focus on Sonatas, including Shostakovich’s Violin Sonata (7/5), Rebecca Clarke’s Viola Sonata (7/7), Prokofiev’s Cello Sonata (7/17), Beethoven’s “Kreutzer” Sonata (7/19), Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata (7/24), and Saint-Saëns’ Violin Sonata (7/26). • The world premiere of a new composition by Lisa Bielawa for Flute, Horn and Piano (7/10) commissioned by the SCMS
Commissioning Club, our eleventh commissioned work. • The return of violinists Karen Gomyo, Augustin Hadelich, and Erin Keefe; violists Yura Lee, Richard O’Neill, and Cynthia Phelps; pianists Inon Barnatan, George Li, and Joyce Yang; flutist Lorna McGhee; and clarinetists Anthony McGill and Ricardo Morales. • FREE Pre-Concert Recitals precede each concert. These 30-minute recitals feature Festival musicians in repertoire of their own choosing. This year’s performances include works by Kernis, Rachmaninov, Franck, Brahms, Dvořák, and more. • This year’s live Chamber Music in the Park performance features a String Quintet by Borodin and a Septet for Strings and Wind by Beethoven to conclude the 2017 Summer Festival on Saturday, July 29 at Volunteer Park. • All concerts are broadcast live in local Seattle parks with the Music Under the Stars program, including Delridge Playfield in West Seattle, Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill, Freeway Park in downtown Seattle, and Columbia Park in Columbia City. Chamber Music in the Park A free concert in Volunteer Park on Wednesday, July 27 at 7pm featuring Festival musicians including violinists James Ehnes, Benjamin Beilman, Erin Keefe, and Andrew Wan, violists Rebecca Albers and Beth Guterman Chu, and cellists Julie Albers and Raphael Bell. This event also offers free, family programming before the concert and a food truck will be on-site. Support for Chamber Music in the Park is provided by The Clowes Fund. Music Under the Stars Every concert is broadcast live into Seattle parks. Prior to each broadcast, a group of student musicians perform a short recital. This year’s parks include Delridge Park in West Seattle, Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill, Freeway Park in Downtown Seattle, and Columbia Park in Columbia City. Support for all these broadcasts is provided by Classical KING-FM 98.1 and Seattle Parks and Recreation. furnished to appeal to the finickiest traveler. The property is mostly gay men, but is gay, lesbian mixed and straight friendly. Breakfast at Taste is included. Piñata PV is the newest gay hotel in Puerto Vallarta. The modern chic hotel with retro and old world touches is on a quiet street in the heart of Zona Romantica, the gayest part of the city. The boutique property is clothing optional and for men only. The hotel is known for hosting parties and special events. Piñata PV has all the upscale furnishings of a W Hotel but with the friendly camaraderie you won’t find at a big box hotel. Hotel Mercurio is a great budget choice but gives you much more than you will find in a typical budget hotel. The rooms are very comfortable, clean but basic. The staff is wonderful and treats everyone like family. The hotel’s breakfast is first-rate, delicious and filling with a good selection of hot and cold dishes that are made-to-order. Its late afternoon early evening happy hour brings the party to the hotel every day. Go-go boys entertain during the taco happy hour on Wednesday and Sundays for “Beer, Boys and Burgers.” Mercurio is targeted toward gay men but lesbians and straight friends are very welcome. If you are considering the above three hotels, book through the recently established site, http://www.staygaypv.com/ for added perks and discounts. Villa David Bed and Breakfast is the only gay hotel in downtown Puerto Vallarta but it is a short walk to the Romantic Zone. The men’s hotel is set in a hacienda-style building with a courtyard and a small clothing-optional pool. It includes a madeto-order breakfast. Nightlife All of Puerto Vallarta’s gay bars except the stripper bar, Anthropology, are in the Zona Romantica neighborhood. (Anthropology is just over the Cuale River, which is the dividing line between downtown and Zona Romantica.) Like most of Latin America, the lounge-type bars are busy in the evenings, while the bigger discos are

busiest after 1am. There are no lesbian bars in the city but women are welcome in most venues, especially the dance bars. The nightlife scene is very changeable in Puerto Vallarta, but fortunately the city offers a couple of guides that you can check out online before you go or you can pick up a free copy once you get in town. The longtime establish gay guide, Gay Guide Vallarta (http://www.gayguidevallarta.com/), includes a free GPS map app that can guide you to a nightspot you want to check out. Gay PV Magazine (http://gaypv.mx/) includes a guide, party pictures and articles. A must-do for first timers is the Puerto Vallarta gay bar tour (http://gayvallartabarhopping.com/). It is run by the publisher of Gay PV Magazine. The hottest new bar is Mr. Flamingo,
a tiki-themed bar at the corner of Lazaro Cardenas and Ignacio Luis Vallarta, which is the city’s gay epicenter. The small triangular shaped open-air bar perfectly fits into the corner and is almost always packed with the crowd dancing to mostly American pop music. The upscale gay sauna, Spartacus, is kitty corner from Mr. Flamingo. Paco’s Ranch is just a couple of steps from Mr. Flamingo and is busiest after 1am. The club plays Mexican and American music and generally has a couple of drag shows nightly with the performers speaking mostly in Spanish. Mr. Flamingo has probably taken some of Paco’s customers away but Paco’s can fit a lot more people. CC Slaughters is across the street from Mr. Flamingo and is a modern building that can accommodate more people for dancing than Pacos. CC’s also has a separate lounge bar if you prefer a quieter space.
If you want to meet a very down to earth crowd, check out Frida’s, a five minute walk from Mr. Flamingo on Insurgentes and Venustiano Carranza. It is owned by Canadian ex-pat Tom Finley who makes everyone feel welcome. Frida’s restaurant serves up delicious comfort food specials every day and is a great place to eat on the cheap and always have company. The city’s two stripper bars are Anthropology and Wet Dreams. Anthropology is a little darker, making customers perhaps a little more likely to get down and dirty with the dancers. But be advised, that the strippers are very aggressive at trying to recruit you for a private show. Wet Dreams is known for a shower next to the bar where the performers dance under the shower. The city’s newest gay bar is StreetBar, which is co-owned by one of the owners of Palm Springs oldest gay bars by the same name. The bar is just a block up from the beach, in front of the landmark pier on Los Muertos Beach, in the heart of Zona Romantica. Blue Chairs (Calle Malecon #4) is most popular for its sunset shows on its multi-level open-air roof. Some nights feature drag shows, other nights strippers, and there is even a gay bingo night. Daylife The unofficially gay Blue Chairs beach is in front of the Blue Chairs Hotel. The beach includes the section of the beach with both the green and blue chairs. Puerto Vallarta has three gay cruises. Most go by the iconic Los Arcos, giant hollowed-out rock formations where you can snorkel and view colorful tropical fish. Diana’s Tours (http://www.dianastours. com/) is the oldest of the gay cruises and has a very loyal clientele. It is mostly gay men but is lesbian and straight friendly. The Wet and Wild cruise (http://www. pvsunsetpartycruise.com/) is marketed to gay men and is very sexually charged with go-go “lotion boys” on-board. The On Bay cruise (http://onbaytour.com/) has been running for about a year and like Wet and Wild, has go-go boys on-board.

Hop Valley Brewing Co. releases Reveal pale ale to support LGBTQ organizations EUGENE, OR – Hop Valley Brewing Co. has released Reveal pale ale brewed in collaboration with ambassadors from the LGBTQ communities in Oregon, Washington and California. Available on tap and in 12-ounce bottles throughout those states, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Reveal will support local and regional LGBTQ nonprofit organizations. “When we realized no brewery had created a beer like Reveal before, we knew we had to,” said Jonas Kungys, Hop Valley co-owner. “Beer brings people together and we want everyone to celebrate community and unity and putting love first.”
A portion of proceeds from the sale of Reveal beer and Reveal clothing will support LGBTQ-related nonprofits, including Pride Foundation in Oregon and Washington and the Queens of the Castro organization in San Francisco. A running tally of funds raised will be posted on Hop Valley’s Reveal website and will consist of a portion of proceeds from every case, keg and sale of Reveal clothing. “We’re thrilled to see a brewery like Hop Valley step up and support the LGBTQ community in such a fun and prominent way,” said Katelen Kellogg, communications and outreach manager for Pride Foundation.

“This is going to be a great approach for raising much-needed funds and Hop Valley’s efforts are going to help a lot of people.” The collaboration team included prominent bar owners, industry veterans and local community leaders from Seattle, Portland, Eugene and San Francisco. The team worked with Hop Valley’s brewers and marketing staff to create a recipe, a name and a packaging look for Reveal. In late May, the team gathered at Hop Valley’s commercial brewery in Eugene to put the finishing touches on the first batch. The titles below are just a small serving of the great and near-great among the avalanche of LGBTQ funnybooks that have appeared in the past year or two (complete with suggested soundtracks): Wuvable Oaf: Blood & Metal by Ed Luce Fantagraphics Okay, this hero is actually an action figure, albeit one you won’t find at Toys R Us anytime soon. The further, huggable adventures of Oaf Jadwiga, teddy bear maker and kitty daddy, aka Goteblud, fearsome and
furry wrestling champ (whose slam fests with the likes of Jim Bunny, Cock Rocker, and El Gato Inferno are featured regularly in Vice magazine).
