The Gayborhood How we are visually depicted not only shapes the way we are perceived, but also how we define ourselves. Following the repeal of DADT and DOMA, same-sex families are finally realizing their aspirations for equal footing in American culture. As Neil Patrick Harris introduces mainstream audiences to Hedwig and The Angry Inch and an openly Gay player has been drafted into the NFL, it’s hard not to buy into the fact that society is at a turning point. Progress has defined the LGBTQ landscape since I started photographing “The Gayborhood” at the start of 2011, a project portraying Gay Seattle. New to the city from the Midwest, through a roundabout set of circumstances I landed in the role of staff photographer for Seattle Gay News. I became intimately involved in the scene and for one year my livelihood consisted of drag shows, club culture, and meeting what seemed like a never-ending Pride procession of personalities. New to using a camera, I pretended to know what I was doing, taking advantage of the excuse: “It’s for the Gay News!” That first year I photographed nearly 200 events, mostly starring drag queens. Then, in 2012, state legislators recognized an opportunity, and the final push for marriage equality in Washington state presented itself. All a sudden, the colorful characters I’d been getting to know and love were organizing benefits, rallies and civil rights marches, and my schedule ramped up to about 350 LGBTQ events that year. However, for the official campaign to approve equality at the ballot, Washington United for Marriage, it made sense to ca-

sually shun the “stereotypical” drag scene imagery I was busy documenting in favor of the more everyday faces of neighbors, friends, family, co-workers, small business owners, and fellow churchgoers. I did my part to assist with mainstreaming its “Our love is the same as yours” message showing men and women who just happen to prefer holding hands with partners of the same sex, but whose daily lives don’t revolve around their sexuality. At the same time, I continued to visually represent what had first endeared this community to me: its diversity and fluidity of gender expression – unfiltered, raw, and in-your-face. It was inspiring to engage with the spirit and energy of movers and shakers who for decades have boldly celebrated their differences and demanded equal rights. 2013 was characterized by not quite as many shoots and events (but still plenty) and, happily, so many weddings! In 2014 my goal has been to begin balancing my “Gayborhood” coverage with visits into people’s homes and more personal spaces, and to more specifically focus on Seattle’s Transgender men and women. I hope this adds to the narrative by highlighting more of people’s outward differences and inward similarities. The images shared here are 29 of nearly 300 selects taken in those first two years, the first part in an ongoing series I look forward to one day publishing in book form.
