NORTH SEA TEXAS Opens December 7 Pim (Jelle Florizoone) isn’t happy. Lonely and introverted, the teen feels neglected by his gadabout single mother, Yvette (Eva van der Gucht), while also harboring a secret crush on his slightly older next-door neighbor, Gino (Mathias Vergels). Circumstances evolve, relationships change, and soon Pim realizes he must be open about his feelings no matter the cost, unsure whether doing so will alienate him further from him mom and ruin any chance for a future with his outgoing and athletic friend. But that’s part of growing up, and if the young boy is go-
ing to live an honest life and have the future he dreams about, the truth must come out – and, sometime soon, so must he. I can’t say I’m quite as taken with the Belgian import North Sea Texas as so many others seem to be. After watching it during last spring’s Seattle International Film Festival, I felt no need to write in-depth about it one way or the other, the only notes I took singling out Florizoone for an impassioned, gently magnetic performance. But the movie itself? As handsomely produced as it was, as nicely understated as Bavo Defurne’s direction proved to be, I couldn’t help but feel like I’d watched this film before, the final product delivering little, if anything, I hadn’t already seen numerous times. many of my thoughts and feelings toward it remain unchanged. Defurne, working from a script he co-wrote with Yves Verbraeken and adapted from André Sollie’s novel, does handle the proceedings with a delicately dexterous touch, never overplaying the inherent melodrama of the piece and allowing Pim’s journey to more often than not eloquently speak for itself. Additionally, the film has a visual aesthetic that’s colorfully intoxicating, director of photography Anton Mertens delivering images that feel lived-in and suitably rusticated. A STELLAR PERFORMANCE Then there is Florizoone. As stated, he is the end-all, be-all of this film, and much like Quvenzhané Wallis (who I realize is almost a decade his junior) in Beasts of the Southern Wild he cuts a magnetic and emotionally complex swath virtually impossible to resist. There are layers to his performance that are oftentimes surprising, and for much of the narrative I was never quite sure what he was going to do or say next, making his ultimate destination a somewhat startling

doling out puerile platitudes. It wastes the majority of its talented female supporting cast – especially Thurman – in thankless roles well beneath their respective talent levels, and for each time it manages to get something right there are countless more where it runs pointlessly in circles desperately searching for a reason to exist. At the same time, the movie somewhat shockingly goes down pretty easy and isn’t as difficult a sit as that description of the script might imply. Butler is at his roguishly charming best as George, while Biel walks through the film with a quiet confidence I found moderately entrancing. The scenes between father and son have kick to them, an emotional heft the remainder of the movie sadly lacks, and while the ultimate solution to our hero’s problem is as clichéd as they come, there’s something about the way that Muccino delivers this syrupy pap that didn’t cause me to gag. There are laughs to be found, a couple tears that potentially could be shed, and moments of warmth and heart that break through the melodramatic tedium, all of which helped make the movie palatable. This is not to say that Playing for Keeps scores. It misses the net by a wide margin, going over the goal post and sailing into the crowd. This is one instance where a talented cast and a strong director are let down by a screenplay whose inherent shortcomings they just can’t compensate for. The movie earns a red card for wasting its oodles of potential, and it’s easy to see why distributor FilmDistrict is releasing it into theaters with little fanfare and almost nonexistent backing.

What he isn’t prepared for are the advances made on him by the team members’ parents. One kid’s wealthy dad, Carl (Dennis Quaid), looks at him and sees dollar signs, using the former professional athlete to schmooze business clients. Others, like single moms Denise (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Barb (Judy Greer), look at George and see a cure for their bedroom loneliness – George a bit unprepared for, but not unreceptive to, this sudden carnal attention. But it’s Lewis he wants to impress and Stacy he longs to get close to, and if he’s ever going to do one, let alone both, of those things he’s going to have to finally grow up and become the mature adult he’s always refused to be. Playing for Keeps has all the potential in the world. It features an outstanding cast of character actors (including the unmentioned Uma Thurman, Iqbal Theba, and James Tupper) and a solid director in Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness, The Last Kiss). The behind-the-scenes crew includes crackerjack cinematographer Peter Menzies (Die Hard With a Vengeance, The Incredible Hulk), production designer Daniel T. Dorrance (The Paperboy), and veteran composer Andrea Guerra (Letters to Juliet, Nine), while the scenario itself is ripe with dramatic and comedic possibility bordering on the infinite. So what’s the problem? The issue is that Robbie Fox’s (So I Married an Axe Murderer) screenplay runs rampant with cliché and never meets a melodramatic plot point it doesn’t want to slovenly embrace. It isn’t interested in going into the complicated emotional nuances continually hinted at throughout, instead contenting itself with
one filled with internal nuances and emotional truisms. Yet my reservations remain. The subplot concerning Yvette is a little ham-fisted and obvious, and if Defurne does ever ratchet up the melodrama it is directly related to the moments and scenes involving her. I also couldn’t help but wish that Gino had been fleshed out more, and as good as Vergels is in the part (he’s close to wonderful), as a character he frustratingly maintains a onedimensionality that drove me nuts. I do get why international and domestic festival audiences have fallen in love with the film. There are numerous superlatives that can be thrown the picture’s way, and in the end the climactic dramatics do hit home in a way that is potent and pure. I just can’t help but feel like with a little more effort – maybe an additional rewrite – Defurne and company could have avoided many of the inherent clichés of the story and gone on to craft something magical. As it is, North Sea Texas isn’t without its merits. I just don’t know if there are enough of them to make up for its more obvious shortcomings.

Maybe even go the donor insemination route. Or … you could just get naked and stick it in. Gayby, an acclaimed indie film from writer/director Jonathan Lisecki (recently nominated for Best First Screenplay by the esteemed Spirit Awards), now available on DVD, is the story of two besties, Jenn and Matt (real-life friends Jenn Harris and Matthew Wilkas), who decide to fulfill a lifelong promise to have a kid … by having sex together. Here, the two stars talk about how they differ from – and resemble – their onscreen personas, and how a Gay man can (believe it or not) conceive a child the “natural” way.

IT’S ABOUT FAMILY Jenn: The film is very much about the family that we create. We have our biological family and then we grow up and move to big cities, or we move away from our family of origin and we build our own little family with our friends, coworkers, and neighbors. We get to choose who we want in our family when we get older. We have the gift of choice. Just like I chose Matt, and Matt chose me. He’s definitely my Gay husband. Matthew: The definition of family isn’t exclusive to just blood relatives. It’s really beyond that. I am not very close to my family, and I moved to N.Y. and I had to create my own family, essentially. That’s what the film is about. LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT Jenn: We met during our freshman orientation at Boston University, and it was literally and completely love at first sight. I don’t mean love like, “Oh my God, I want to marry that guy” – it was like, “You’re coming with me.” He’s just one of those soul-mate people who knows you. We go together really well – he’s very much my brother. So I can’t even think of him having sex. It totally creeps me out. But neither of us really can. We get grossed out. Matthew: Yeah, we’re never going to have sex. I have as much fun as my character does and I work hard like she does, but it’s obviously high comedy – I’m not walking around falling into bushes. I was also a spinning instructor for years, and that is my motorbike. Matthew: We’re both really neurotic. I think we both share that quality, so I don’t think Jenn is the only neurotic one in this

ADMISSION Every smarty-pants Lesbian we know loves Tina Fey, even though she plays for the other team. And when Admission, her latest film, opens next spring, that audience will get the added bonus of actual Lesbian Lily Tomlin as a co-star. The story revolves around Fey as a college admissions director who both falls for Paul Rudd and learns that the baby she gave up for adoption might well be a maladjusted genius applying for admission to her school. It’s always good news when Tomlin decides to do a film, but it’s always just as interesting to see how Fey carries a movie she didn’t write. The star didn’t call her book Bossypants for no reason: As former head writer for Saturday Night Live, screenwriter of Mean Girls, and creator of 30 Rock, she is, more often than not, seemingly in charge of her own destiny. But she’s had pretty good luck so far, appearing comfortably at home in the come-

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer SCROOGE: THE MUSICAL SEATTLE MUSICAL THEATRE Through December 9 Scrooge: The Musical, now playing at Seattle Musical Theatre, is a sweet and completely unchallenging musical version of A Christmas Carol. Leslie Bricusse wrote the entire thing – book, music, and lyrics – and he hews to the story, to the letter. Still, this sort of fare seems exactly what people want to see this time of year, if we are to judge by the packed theaters offering A Christmas Carol. (ACT’s version is in its 37th year!) The production at SMT is a creditable one, with a strong performance by J. Stegar Thompson as Scrooge, though it’s a bit on the kitschy side. The style that director Steven Fogell seems to prefer is a bit stagey – a “let’s all run to the front of the stage, set ourselves, and then start a song” style. But there are some strong singers in the cast, particularly Kate Sumpter and Rebecca Maiten as the Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present, respectively, and adorable little trouper Kitana Turnbull as Tiny Tim. And though you likely know the story all too well, by the end even this most predictable of musicals might cause a moist eye or two. The songs render the subject nicely, including “Happiness” and “The Milk of Human Kindness,” reminding us that we can and should treat each other better. SCROOGE LIVES A scene where Scrooge forgives every
debt owed him led to “what if” ruminations: What if U.S. banks, holding hundreds of thousands of underwater mortgages, practiced debt forgiveness for Christmas this year? Wouldn’t that instantly change millions of lives for the better? What if practicing debt forgiveness re-levels the economic inequities of our current society? It was an unexpected mental detour. The set, also designed by Fogell, is a nicely bleak grey, black, and white town square, which allows the cast to stand out in lovely costumes by DodiRose Zooropa. The choreography by Joanna Hardie is suitably sweet. Spooky lighting by Richard Schaefer and spooky sound by Kevin Heard rounded out the technical support. An important, and sometimes missing of late, ingredient to the atmosphere – a strongly performing small orchestra – is led by music director Josh Anderson. The wind section was note-perfect and the sounds melded very professionally. The production is totally family-friendly, allowing for the youngest tykes able to sit still for a longish first act (roughly 75 minutes). There’s no swearing and a couple of chaste stage kisses are as adult as it gets. If you like your Christmas Carol musicalized, this is the version for you. A Christmas Carol for musical theater fans
Inspecting Carol still has a lot of laughs, which is great. It’s a remount of an original piece first created in 1991, when the Rep was more of a true repertory company. Daniel Sullivan and those resident cast members created a mashup of a farce by Nikolai Gogol, The Inspector General,

with a down-at-the-mouth theater company doing their annual Christmas Carol to boost their budget into the black. The play has a lot of inside theater jokes, which can be fun, but as hard as this talented cast works, and however much director Jerry Manning wants it to succeed, it’s probably time to think about retiring this work. It would help if the audience were better informed as to when it takes place, since the play has Stephen Hando hauling around a huge anachronistic “laptop” and other older technology is employed. The fact that the play is set in 1991 isn’t even noted in the program. The economics of theater are still the same or even more uncertain today – and this 1991 theater is failing to make budget, as managing director Kevin (Burton Curtis) informs artistic director Zorah (Gretchen Krich). It’s losing subscribers and even its annual $30,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts is in jeopardy. Zorah, meanwhile, is in the midst of a four-day rehearsal process. (Really? Who rehearses just four days on a show that is essential to keeping the theater going the rest of the year?) Hando’s character, Wayne, is a forlorn would-be actor who thinks he scheduled an audition just by sending in a postcard. When Zorah and Kevin get a letter that says an NEA observer is coming to evaluate the fate of their grant, they decide that Wayne is that observer, only incognito. It helps explain why he is such a bad actor, they decide. To encourage/bribe him into giving them a good report, they cast him – in the tiniest role they can. But they also allow him to weigh in on their artistic vision, thinking they have to go along with whatever he suggests. Krich’s character makes a big to-do over how she has worked to diversify the theater
by bringing in an African American (Walter, played by Reginald André Jackson). In 1991, that might have registered as funny, but in 2012, it just seems sad. Veteran cast members include Ian Bell as Larry, a kibitzing Scrooge who wants to rewrite the play into some kind of humanitarian crusade; Chris Ensweiler as Phil, who has the hots for the director and fakes a back injury for sympathy; Peggy Gannon as MJ, the competent stage manager turned less-competent actor by vacancy; and Kimberly King and Michael Winters playing a loving acting couple who genially do whatever is called for. NOT-SO-TINY TIM Hank Fialkow and Nathaniel Kelderman alternate as the Tiny Tim-like character who has grown too big to carry and is now a cheeky tween. And Kathy Hsieh has a very brief moment as the real NEA observer, who shows up just in time to see the trainwreck of the dress rehearsal. To repeat, the cast is full of talent and watching them is fun. Each does what their role calls for, though some of what is called for becomes odder as the play goes on. MJ, unaccountably, is unable to stop laughing through the entire dress; Walter has learned zero lines in the previous days of rehearsal and stands mute, unable even to improvise. One has to suppose that this is what passes for farce. If you’re looking for Christmas Lite, this is for you. A big year for Frank Ocean climaxed December 5 with six Grammy Award nominations, including nods for Album and Record of the Year (artist and producer), Best New Artist, Best Urban Contemporary Album, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. The R&B breakout star, who earlier this year admitted to an affair with another man, opened his tour at The Showbox Market this summer. Ocean’s Channel Orange will battle The Black Keys’ El Camino, Mumford & Sons’ Babel, fun.’s Some Nights, and Jack White’s Blunderbuss in the Album category. “Thinkin Bout You” by Ocean goes up against The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy,” fun.’s “We Are Young” (featuring Janelle Monae), Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” (featuring Kimbra), Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” in the Record field. His competitors for Best New Artist are fun., The Lumineers, Hunter Hayes, and Alabama Shakes. There were big names missing from the Grammy nominees list, including Madonna, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, and Nicki Minaj. The biggest disappointment from an otherwise impressive roster of nominations was a Song of the Year nod
for Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” which also earned her kudos for Best Pop Solo Performance. Newer acts with tremendous buzz, such as Lana Del Rey, Ellie Goulding, Emeli Sande, and Gary Clark Jr., were completely shut out of the 81 categories. The 55th Annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast February 10.
THE MAC IS BACK Legendary pop-rock band Fleetwood Mac will celebrate the 35th anniversary of their pinnacle work, Rumours, with a reissue of the album and a nationwide tour in 2013. The re-release of Rumours, which has sold more than 40 million copies to date, is said to include studio and live tracks that have never been featured on any of the group’s previous recordings. Fleetwood Mac will perform May 20 at the Tacoma Dome. Tickets, priced between $58.59 and $164.10, go on sale December 17 at all Ticketmaster locations. Stevie Nicks (who interviewed with Seattle Gay News last year), Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie have committed to all dates of the 34-city U.S. tour. Bayreuth in Blu-ray A Ring cycle from 1992 gets a marvelous video update
by Rod Parke SGN A&E Writer WAGNER: DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN BAYREUTH FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA Kultur Video Back in the early ’90s, a group of friends and I rented LaserDiscs (the predecessor of DVDs) from Scarecrow Video to watch Wagner’s Ring cycle of four operas. It was a production at Bayreuth by Harry Kupfer, conducted by Daniel Barenboim. The cast
was uniformly excellent for the period, and there was much buzz about the extensive use of lasers to create lighting effects. (I later saw the same team of Kupfer/Barenboim, minus the lasers, live in Berlin when all ten of Wagner’s mature operas were presented at the Staatsoper.) But those discs were far from high-definition as we know it today, and the laser beams in particular did not come across well at all. But the re-release of that same 1992 Ring production, updated to true HD video and sound, sheds an entirely new light on this show. These Blu-ray discs, seen and heard

on a state-of-the-art home theater system, allow one to see at last what all the fuss was about. In Das Rheingold in particular, sheets of slime-green laser light cover the floor of the whole stage, thus hiding holes and stairways in and under that floor. Thus, when a singer pops his/her head up through the sheet of light, it does indeed look like something emerging from water – effective visual magic as the Rheinmaidens tease Alberich.
Somehow the exaggerated motions seemed more natural and integrated in Jerusalem’s acting. The one place where it fit perfectly was in the portrayal of Mime by Graham Clark, who almost always overacts, no matter what role he’s singing. He made Mime a tour de force, lacking any depth but irresistibly fun to watch.
MUSIC, SINGING EXCELLENT Overall, the production has much to recommend it. The sound of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra (mainly members of the Vienna Philharmonic) is glorious, even if it does lack the ultimate dynamic range of, say, the Valencia Ring Blu-rays. The singing is generally outstanding, with top praises to John Tomlinson as Wotan, Siegfried Jerusalem in his prime as Siegfried, and vocally spectacular Philip Kang as Hagen. Indeed, the forging scene in Siegfried is the best overall that I have ever seen or heard. Anne Evans as Brünnhilde is more than adequate but lacks the power in the middle range to be truly effective. She visibly prepares for almost every high note, often taking a breath just before hitting it. Visually, the highlight was the second act of Siegfried with the most interesting set and a decent dragon, even if the camera was too close in to give a real sense of its total effect. Otherwise, the sets tended to dark metal and black stone – grim, and a little boring. Lasers were used effectively in Gotterdämmerung and whenever the Rhein River returned. The biggest drawback of this video is the acting. Perhaps the audience in the Festspielhaus was far enough away to lessen the effect, but to us watching the hi-def video, it was so overdone that it provoked laughter.
TOO MANY GIMMICKS Modern “concept” Rings almost always have some elements that don’t seem to make sense. Here were the Norms in a forest of TV antennas, dressed like Death in Bergman’s The Seventh Seal complete with white-face makeup. At first they seemed to be nuns in black habits, counting beads on the “rope of destiny”! Kupfer is not above changing the story, despite what the libretto says. (In Berlin he changed the ending of Lohengrin so Eva’s brother never returns and the swan is dead and bloody.) Here, the glory of the music that closes the four-night Ring cycle is totally robbed of any exaltation by modern-dress members of a cocktail party carrying onto the stage many TV sets, which they watch with blasé expressions as they drink their champagne. If there is any meaning to Brünnhilde’s immolation, they certainly don’t get it. The other main drawback, to my tastes, is the complete lack of any sense of what it’s like to actually attend a live Ring cycle. These performances were apparently not filmed live. You never see or hear the audience or the conductor. There are no curtain calls. I’ve been to many Rings; it’s always a big occasion. Most more recent Ring videos (such as at Valencia and the Met Opera) are recorded live and convey an added excitement as a direct result. I missed that here.
